Mystery Of 2010 Bucs

January 31st, 2017

NFL Network’s Deion Sanders talks with former Bucs RB LeGarrette Blount Monday at Super Bowl Opening Night.

It was one of the strangest periods in Bucs history and to this day it remains shrouded in mystery.

Led by Raheem Morris — who graciously gave Joe a bunch of time Monday night to talk about the Bucs, which Joe will share in the coming days — the 2010 Bucs won 10 games and missed out on the playoffs in a wild card tiebreaker to the eventual Super Bowl champion Packers.

The Bucs have yet to win 10 games in a season since.

Eight members of that team were Pro Bowl alternates or better before, during or after their Bucs playing days. That does not include 2005 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Cadillac Williams, or 2016 NFL leader in rushing touchdowns, LeGarratte Blount. Ronde Barber likely will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame some day.

Yet after leaving Tampa the following season at 4-2 heading to London, the team completely imploded. In short time, Rah was launched and the dominoes began to fall. The team was blown up.

What the hell happened?

Last night at “Super Bowl Opening Night” at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Joe got a quick question in with Blount, now with the Belicheats. Joe asked Blount what happened to that Bucs team? Blount is equally confused.

“I couldn’t tell you,” Blount told Joe. “I ain’t the coach, so I don’t know. I didn’t see nothing [in the locker room that caused chaos]. We will never know.”

Boy, ain’t that the truth.

We will likely never know why that team imploded as it did. Joe, and Bucs fans in general, have educated guesses, but until someone goes on the record, that is all we can do: guess.

…or I don’t know you could have just asked Raheem Morris when you sat down to interview him
Dude, Joe already wrote Raheem’s stuff is forthcoming. This is Blount’s reaction. You are moments from a visit to the cooler until after the draft. –Joe

  2. Couch Fan Says:

The team didnt implode. It was never good to begin with. If you had eyes you should of been able to see that. The team played awful for 3 quarters every single game, only to pull off a tiny comeback the last quarter but only winning against the worst teams in the league. The 10-6 record was just a mirage of the team playing a lot of bad teams that year. It was the first winning season in a long time so fans desperately hoped it meant something, but if you really watched, that team was horrid.

  3. 813bucboi Says:

    ^^^^^…LOLOLOL….@JOE aint f’ing around today!!!….LOLOLOL

my guess is that team and staff were just too young…they thought they could just turn it on when ever they wanted to….but everything happens for a reason….I feel like all sides are happy….blount going for his second ring, rah going for his first, we finally have the qb we’ve been searching for since doug Williams and we’re headed in the right direction…..BUCS WILL BE IN THE BIG GAME NEXT YEAR….GO BUCS!!!!

  4. Bobby M. Says:

I believe London was where Talib broke curfew, then cussed Raheem out in the hotel lobby….and the team did nothing. That was the beginning of the end. Nobody took Raheem serious, he was in over his head, it was obvious the team quit on him.

  5. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Man is it true Kyle Shanahan’s book bag was stolen with Sunday’s gamelan inside???

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

Bobby M. is the closer to the truth, with the roster that the rockstar put together, it was a huge party from 2010 to 2011!!!! and the local media did not care until the losing started to happen!!!! Its no big secret!!!! and The Bucs are still paying for those mistakes that they let get out of control ( drug martin )!!!!

I know that blunt would not know!!! Was he to self medicated from the duffle bags that jeremey stevens and kellen winslow full of stuff that they would bring to team hotels (allegedly)!!!!!!!

The only way someone does not know that was local is that they did not want to know!!!!!!! Don’t ask questions that you don’t want answers for!!!!!!

  7. DallasBuc Says:

Joe- it was just a suggestion why are you so sensitive about it? How am I supposed to know what you asked Morris since you haven’t published it yet? What written or unwritten rule did I break to get the cooler threats going again?

  8. Chris Says:

NOS, I think I’m coming around to Dalvin. And I might want to make a trade to do it.

  9. Chris Says:

I think he’s better than Elliott, but I don’t think he’ll make it past #8 pock

  10. Ndog Says:

According to Dallas the 2010 Bucs falling apart was all Licht’s fault.

  11. DallasBuc Says:

Ndog- Licht is responsible for enough of his own failures so there’s no need to attribute more than he is already accountable for. I would be happy to detail it all for you again if you’d like!

  12. GhostofSchiano Says:

Hey JOE what about the irony? The week 13 match up in 2010????? We host the Falcons, making a comeback, and the nail gets hit on the coffin with a BRENT GRIMES Interception. THE IRONY. Had we won that game…who knows.

  13. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    @ nosbos
Where did u hear that about the game plan. lol I hope it’s true. I would love to continue to RING CHECK the fail clowns when their heads get to big

  14. Waterboy Says:

Young team with not many veterans with an off-season interrupted by the holdout lead to a disappointing season the following year and Morris getting fired.

Schiano came in drafted Doug and started giving him the ball 25 times a game and wouldn’t allow Blount to run the ball much and show up his draft pick which eventually led to Blount being released.

    Everything in a nutshell.

  15. Joeypoppems Says:

I haven’t looked into the whole backpack thing, but I work with a Falcons fan and he was pretty heated about it lol

  16. Lord Cornelius Says:

Key to the 2010? Having one of the easiest schedules. We played the NFC West which was terrible that year; along with a terrible Panthers team twice; and a few other joke teams. Even the 6 win / 7 win teams like the Rams & Seahawks were worse than the 6 win Panthers of last year (who were in the SB the year before) or the 7 win Saints of last year (who still had a top offense while the Rams/Seahawks weren’t top anything).

Seriously look at these wins (many of which were by a small margin as is the NFL)

    vs Browns (5-11)
    @ Panthers (2-14)
    @ Bengals (4-12)
    vs Rams (7-9)
    @ Cardinals (5-11)
    vs Panthers (2-14)
    @ 49ers (6-10)
    @ Redskins (6-10)
    vs Seahawks (7-9)
    vs Saints (11-5)

  17. LakeLandBuc Says:

The downfall started during that 48-3 whipping by the 49ers. The team flat out quit that game and they never recovered. They did beat the Saints the following week, but it was their last win.

  18. Kevin Says:

agree with couch…..tthe team was never good and what was more confusing is how they won ten games the year before.

I would actually like to see Blount back in Tampa along with Jeremy Zuttah. Both free agents

  19. The bucfan 88 Says:

Looking back on that 2010 season I even though they went 10-6 I fill like this years 9-7 team is light years better than that team if u want an example of what that 10-6 team would look like look at Detroit this year that’s the same team that 10-6 team had an easy schedule the only team we beat was new orlands thats all 9 of those teams had pic in the top 10 with Carolina picking no 1 to me that 10-6 team needs to stop getting all this praise if any of u don’t agree with me look up the records of cle,cin,st.louis,az,SF49,wash & Seattle they all had losing records

  20. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Some idiot at work today said he heard on the radio that the patriots were trading for Ezekiel Elliot. I laughed at him and looked it up but found nothing on the subject. Lol

  21. Lord Cornelius Says:

Bucfan 88 – or Miami of this last year. That team beat no one worthwhile on their way to a great record

  22. The bucfan 88 Says:

@lord cornelius I bet money if we had a time machine & swapped this 9-7 team with that 10-6 team they would have not only made the wild card they would have destroyed all the competition in front of them I bet they would have probably won there 2nd super bowl

  23. Buc1987 Says:

    Cheatin’ Patriots.

  24. Artemis Rand Says:

“Man, your a fake ass John Randle!”

-Keyshawn Johnson, on the fragile bravado of the Raheem Morris era Bucs

  25. ShutTheBucUp Says:

I’d have to agree with most of the sentiment here. The schedule was easy and I’m sure a lot of teams took the Bucs pretty lightly coming off of their dumpster fire of a 2009 season. The team tasted a little adversity in 2011 and collapsed.

  26. Waterboy Says:

I agree that it wasn’t a tough schedule but I also remember Gruden having some fairly easy schedules in the years where he won the division after the 1 super bowl season. I haven’t looked back at the other 2 seasons where they won the division but in 2005 this was the teams they beat. They split with Carolina and won the division in a tie breaker.

    Minnesota (9-7)
    Buffalo (5-11)
    Green Bay (4-12)
    Detroit (5-11)
    Miami (9-7)
    Washinton (10-6)
    Atlanta (8-8)
    NO (3-13)
    Carolina (11-5)
    Atlanta (8-8)
    NO (3-13)

  27. Joe Says:

-Keyshawn Johnson, on the fragile bravado of the Raheem Morris era Bucs

Nope. Key said that about the Bengals in 2002.

  28. caradoc Says:

He sounds like Sgt. Schultz. “I see nothing–NOTHING!”

  29. caradoc Says:

I wasn’t just an easy schedule. IIRC pretty much every team with a decent QB had their QB out injured when they played us that year.

  30. Buc4Lyfe79 Says:

    @Joe
The record CLEARLY shows the 2010 Bucs did NOT miss the playoffs because of losing a tie-breaker with the Packers, the NFl TOOK IT FROM THEM in the form of a TD that their “officials” took away from K2 in the detroit game that season. Rewind the tape to before the 2010 season began, and you will find the packers front office on the record stating how 2009, was the biggest single season loss in team revenue since they were in existance…Follow the money Joe. The NFL is legally listed as “entertainment, which gives them a full legal ride to fix the outcome of their games. 2010 Bucs were ROBBED.

  31. Joeypoppems Says:

    quite the conspiracy theory lol

  32. Lord Cornelius Says:

Lol I dunno man. The only team we beat that was any good was the Saints; and they lost their wildcard game to the 7-9 Seahawks.

The Packers and Rodgers were on a mission from God that year in the playoffs; and had way more notable wins in the regular season including 4 playoff teams:
    10-6 Eagles
    11-5 Jets
    10-6 Giants
    11-5 Bears

  33. Pickgrin Says:

2010 was all smoke and mirrors. Raheem’s Bucs could only beat teams with a losing record and used up 10 years worth of “luck” in one season – in the form of every imaginable way to receive favorable bounces and calls in beating those bad teams.

And I’m quite sure the contents of Sgt Winslow’s notorious briefcase had no bearing on the following year’s implosion….

  34. vortexx66 Says:

Dallasbuc, don’t go away mad just go away. Dude your a troll.
I rarely make comments, but enjoy this corner of the web. Shuffle off…

  35. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

GOAT its true. Just Google Kyle Shanahan that’s the first topic that will show up. Apparently a reporter picked up the wrong bag,30 minutes later it was returned to its rightful owner. That’s a lot time to retrieve info from a device man.

  36. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And Chris he about to take the league by storm. Been a lil minute since we last seen that type of speed from the RB position. Can’t wait bro.

  37. Chris Says:

Yeah I watched more video. Hes a weapon. He may even go top 5

  38. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Chris…glad to have you join the NOSBOS crowd. I’ve been on board for awhile.

Dalvin can not only take it to the house…he can catch the ball. Can you even imagine a LB trying to cover Dalvin out of the backfield?

  39. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

See Chris when I come here and say he’s special it doesn’t carry much weight I’m nobody. But when VH3 says the same thing it adds some validation to me making the same statement. This ain’t homerism bro. I want and need him the exact same way I wanted and needed Jameis WINSton bro. Why, because I felt he was special. I’m not here saying take every Seminole. Just this Seminole.

  40. duthsty rhothdes Says:

DallasBuc knows whats up licht is a bafoon and mismanaged this team’s personnel its crazy… bucs OL and DL where championships are won is adressed as an after thought, DB & K where licht goes instead of OL to protext jameis…and sign doug martin when whole town talkn about his problem, CMON….

  41. Rod Munch Says:

“the 2010 Bucs won 10 games and missed out on the playoffs in a wild card tiebreaker ”

You forgot to say they actually should have won 11 games but the refs called one of the biggest BS penalties in Bucs history (not close to the biggest, see 99 NFC Championship game) when they bogusly claimed Winslow committed offensive PI in the endzone in what should have been a game winning TD. The NFL later sent the Bucs a letter saying sorry, not sorry, we blew the call but hey the Packers got into the playoffs and isn’t that what is really important…

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Lord Cornelius nailed it. It was a very easy schedule. I mean, just look at the records of the teams we beat.

Random outright sucked, and Blount is lying or forgetful. We all knew about Talib in London. He didn’t? Come to think of it, there were rumors about Blount back then too. Spread by big puppy if I remember right.

Although I wanted to keep him.

  43. LakeLandBuc Says:

Dalvin Cook is a special player and the best RB in the draft. But will he be available at 19, will Jason Licht trade up for him? This is what CBS Sports Dane Brugler had to say about him………………..And in what projects as a loaded 2017 running back class, Cook is the cream of the crop and the best prospect at his position. LSU’s Leonard Fournette is a physical freak and Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey has outstanding run instincts, but Cook is the complete package with the athletic profile and mental makeup to be an impact performer in the NFL.
When evaluating the running back position, there are two main criteria that translates to the NFL: can you navigate, and can you create? And Cook is above average in both areas. He has excellent patience to allow his blockers to do their job and then times his burst to maximize each run. If defenses give him a crease, he has the vision to find openings and athletic gifts to explode through them, making it look easy due to his feet, balance and spatial awareness.

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    “Random” = Raheem

    tablet issues

  45. SB Says:

Guys……..Any of you that know me know that I was probably the only “Gator” on this site that was defending Winston and ok with drafting him even though I started out in the ‘trade down’ club. I LOVE Cook, if he were a Gator I would prolly be beating the drum harder but the reality is he Won’t be there when we draft. I think he is good enough that the Combine will put him in the top 10 easily. This team can’t afford to give up draft picks to move up the board right now. I would love to see Cook in Pewter and Red but it just can’t happen.

  46. DallasBuc Says:

Vortexx- go ahead and make me
Been here a whole lot longer than you and just about everyone else and will be here long after you. So why don’t you go ahead and make me?

  47. SB Says:

Wow…I never knew you were such a tough guy Dallas.

  48. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Nice words Lakeland. I just have a hunch that 19 spot won’t matter as much others think.

  49. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Jbf keeps saying he won’t be there, but each week gose by he falls lower and lower in the mocks. Do they mean anything no. I’m just paying attention is all. Last year this time the mocks were saying Vernon Hargreaves and didn’t really change at anytime over the summer. This year I see mocks saying various things when it comes to our selection at 19. To me that’s telling.

  50. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I appreciate You posting that Lakeland. You didn’t have to but you did that’s cool of you bro. I have one question for you tho. With the words that that individual spoke about Dalvin would that not be enough to be worth moving up for in your opinion bro???

  51. SB Says:

Nos my brother. Hope all is well with you. Don’t fool yourself by looking at mock drafts in January. As I stated before, after the Combine he will be a lock at top 10. This team can’t afford to trade into the say……..8 spot to lock up Cook. That takes too much. Maybe he gets into some trouble between now and then and drops then we can make a move. Outside of that I just don’t see it.

  52. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    NOSBOS

Sadly Walter Football has the Stinkin’ Panthers taking Dalvin at 8th. That’s a move of ten spots. I love Dalvin but he needs to drop some more…I do not see us trading into the top ten where it would get really expensive in terms of draft picks.

I hope you’re right and Dalvin falls to us…keeping my fingers crossed…Walter has us taking Taco Charlton at 19 a nice player for sure but man after all the DE’s we have drafted in the first round with NOTHING to show for them….and the DL needs some help but we are desperate at RB and WR. When Jaquizz Rodgers is your #1 back heading into the off season….scary. At least we have ME13 at WR…pick up Desean Jackson and then we can go for that RB early. I’m tired of the “dunkaneers” concept…ME13 and Brate are enough height…give me some freaking speed and separation.

In my wildest dreams we get both Dalvin and Samuels…Those are the two most explosive players in the draft although I still believe McCaffrey has ability.

I want an offense that can EXPLODE! I’m with Dirk we need some chunk plays…both Dalvin and Samuels can provide large chunks of yardage.

  53. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

We’ll see how it all shakes down draft night Big bro.

  54. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

All I know is this GM is a Maverick. If he wants a guy he go gets a guy. Unapologetic to anyone about what it took do so. We can come here all we want and talk about the importance of draft picks I’m sure he feels the same. But for a once every five or so year guy. Trust me he liable to make a move. He wanted Roberto so he did what it took to secure Roberto. So some can continue on the importance of picks train all they want. This dude is known for bucking traditional wisdom.

  55. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Calais Campbell,Stills(reason being Pete I think he’ll accept the role of #2 somewhat better than DJ. Not that I would be opposed to DJ. Whatever it takes for DC after that you can do what you please with the rest of those picks. This D was the best in the league for a five or six week stretch. Main need for that side is to be healty. This team ain’t full of holes like people like to say round here.

  56. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I’m not against it but he used a second round pick on a kicker. But y’all actually believe it would be beyond the pale for him to move for the purpose of Dalvin??? Really???

  57. LakeLandBuc Says:

Nole..I would move up to draft Dalvin Cook. We moved up to draft a Kicker, why not move up to draft a franchise RB.

  58. LargoBuc Says:

Dalvin is an absolute game changer! Something this offense is in dire need of!

  59. SB Says:

    speaking of RBs………….or FB/ RBs….
    Anyone remember this guy?

  60. JAB83 Says:

For the Record. We lost he lost they lost everyone lost. Thats Sports!!!

Loosing equals change. Winning equals tweaks.

  61. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

That was a bad @$$ man.

  62. DCBUCSFAN Says:

I have seen so many idiotic posts regarding the 2010 Bucs’ record. That 2010 team took care of the teams they were supposed to, and should have also beaten the Lions that year had it not been for a B/S PI call on Winslow. That team played with heart and confidence. Your beloved 2016 9-7 Bucs would wished they had the heart of that 2010 team. This current team controlled their own destiny in December and pissed their pants in the worst way! Had that team made it to the playoffs, no doubt they would have taken it to the house. The downfall of the team was the owners failure to fortify the team (players and coaches) with some experience to balance out that youth.

  63. tnew Says:

Manchester United…The article that I’m still waiting for someone to really do the research on. This is a clip from the Wik page regarding the Glazers ownership of the Soccer team..

On 16 November 2010, it was revealed that the Glazers were to pay off the remaining £220 million contained within the PIK loans by 22 November 2010.[56] The loans were by then accruing interest at a rate of 16.25%, as the club’s overall debt had exceeded its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) by more than five times.

All you have to do is read that to understand what was going on with the Bucs.. I remember going to games with my family during that time and felt like everything was done on the cheap. They are flush with Man U now and the Bucs should feel some love this way now. I know businesses are run “independently” from one another. But I also know that you can lean one out if another requires funds.

  64. tnew Says:

My point is, after the 2010 season, they should have invested to keep the momentum moving forward with the team. Their free agency moves were to resign Quincy Black and Davin Joseph.. not horrible and to acquire Micheal Koenen. This is also why after Raheem’s firing the best they could find was Schiano.

They best thing to say is, I’m glad we don’t have to live through the past 8 years as Bucs fans again

  65. Buc1987 Says:

Say we had to move up to 8, to get Dalvin. What do you think the Bucs have to give up for a jump like that? This years first and next years first? Or will it take more?

    Anyone can answer this.

  66. JAB83 Says:

It will take and act of JL to trade up.

If indeed JW#3 is the real deal. We wont be needing to move up. In fact we just need to draft best player for our needs in our spots. HOPEFULLY. Some team will want to trade a few picks to us and we can scoop some late round talent.

All this talk about moving up is just that… NO WAY WE MOVE UP THIS YEAR…

If anything we trade down to aquire more picks/prospects…. BET???

  67. JAB83 Says:

Besides that…. Say what you want about the Muscle Hamster…. I don’t think he is done BY ANY MEANS… Dude proved way to much just to be hung high and dry like IN THE PAST WITH CERTAIN PLAYERS LEAGUE WIDE….

All this stuff surrounding DM is fuel for a fire that is clearly burning in him to excel. He messed up. BIG FREAKING DEAL. We have people in house to resolve those issues now.

And if you wanna some good odds on a bounce back year from a guy that finished runner up to the best back in NFL history just two seasons ago. I would bet on DM because if nothing else. This is his pattern, All Pro to All Nothing etc…

But one thing we can say for sure about DM… We now know why and he shall forever be know as THE MUSCLE HAMSTER… As much as he hated it he could not suppress his inner beast.

  68. LakeLandBuc Says:

    Buc1987…I wouldn’t give up more than a 1st and 3rd.

  69. Trevor Says:

    Joe,
it all unraveled on the London trip and your bud “BIG DOG” has all the scoop but wont say it on the air. there was an incident and no one involved is saying anything.
please break the story to the public

  70. The Buc Realist Says:

    @trevor

The Rah/Dom frat party started way before that!!!!! The fight that broke out in london after Talib and some other miss curfew then Tabib did not like getting yelled out by the coaches and then a brawl started in the team hotel!!!! It was a big incident, but control and discipline was long gone before then!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  71. Joeypoppems Says:

    @JAB83

So if his pattern is all pro to all nothing like you said it is (and I agree) why would you want that out of a starter? Wouldnt you want a consitantly good player? Injuries and now this rehab stint wont let Doug Martin be consistant
