Zay Jones At No. 8

January 31st, 2017
zay jones

Ranking suggests WR Zay Jones on draft board when Bucs pick.

Joe is getting more geeked by the day.

Initially, with the Bucs picking at No. 19, Joe thought there would be no way to fill one of the Bucs’ two greatest holes — wide receiver or running back — at that slot.

The two best running backs, barring Leonard Fournette and Dalvin Cook walking into the Indiana Convention Center during March’s combine with a joint in their left hand and a bottle of Jack Daniels their right, should be off the board at No. 19.

Wide receiver? It also seems a stretch that Corey Davis and/or Mike Williams, arguably the top two receivers in the draft, will be available at No. 19.

East Carolina receiver Zay Jones blew up the Senior Bowl with crazy catches and showed an ability to get separation in tight coverage. Word is that Jones was turning heads all week in practice.

Well, if one is to believe the musings of Chris Burke of SI.com, there is no question Jones will be available at No. 19 and maybe, just maybe, he’ll be there when the Bucs pick in the second round at No. 50.

Burke has Jones (158 catches last year alone) listed as the No. 8 receiver in the draft.

If this is the case, perhaps Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht could trade back, acquire an extra pick or two, and still get Jones and provide #WeaponsForWinston.

In a perfect world this is what happens!

  2. Off the Cuff Says:

If the Bucs manage to snag a safety and defensive tackle in free agency, then the draft can be all about #weaponsforwinston

  3. LakeLandBuc Says:

Zay Jones should be a 3rd round pick.

  4. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

I know that we need WRs and a RB. I know drafting a stud at #19 for Jameis would make for great game watching…. that is until the defense got on the field.

We need another STUD at DE at #19, IMO. Not going to find a DE of good value in FA, definitely NOT. Shoot, Gholston is going to make a killing in FA and he is not a stud. A serviceable WR in FA? Yes. A good RB in later rounds in the draft? Yes.

I realize a Dalvin Cook or a Cory Davis would be a very sexy pick and great fun to watch on Sundays, but then Matt Ryan, or Rogers or Brady would get on the field and tear up our defense. Please use #19 on our Dline!

  5. Mike S Says:

I like KD Cannon WR out of Baylor in later rounds he’s a baller. First round I say see how the draft falls to us to decide best player available that also fills a need.

  6. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

OtC , I’m with ya ‘cept the whole safety deal. If it’s not a TOP flight safety… Berry. To me that’s reaching this year, well a lil anyway. This year’s DRAFT will be one where we as BUCS fan will be in full blown suspense. This is THE MOST important offseason in our history.
Far as Jones, I’d rather have Reynolds… To me the key to our success will be adding NFL tested speed in Stills or Jackson. I do want Pryor but don’t think the Browns will let him go.
Nos Bos…. IF we were to sign A.P. and somehow both C. Davis and D. Cook… Who would you take then?

  7. macabee Says:

    LakeLandBuc,

According to NFLDraftScout/Matt Miller, Zay Jones is still a 3rd round pick. The problem with Burke’s analysis is of the top ten WRs only Cooper Kupp and Amara Darboh accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl. NFLDraftScout’s data was updated on the 29th following the Senior Bowl.

  8. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Harry…I was just saying the same thing over on BUCS Nation. Yes Winston’s weapons will do nothing if there on the sidelines. DE is what I want at 19
    Barnett
    Harris
Taco…. NEED more Tanks in the trenches, MONSTERS in the middle., GORILLAS IN THE MIST.
More than anything we need Poe in the middle, that or resign Will and move him inside…
    Winston’s need weapons yes
    Kwon does too

  9. USFBUC Says:

I like the idea of trading back if we can still get one of the Dlinemen we need and going for TE, WR, S, RB in later rounds. Personally I like Charleton, Leggett, Mixon, Jones, Jackson. There are a few other linemen on both sides that look like good value in the second and third rounds.

  10. Joeypoppems Says:

Personally, my order for round 2 WR is Josh Reynolds, Cooper Kupp, Zay Jones, and Taywan Taylor in that order. I was more impressed by Reynolds and Kupp than Zay. I also think Zay Jones and Taywan Taylor will slip into round 3 so who knows, maybe Licht will trade back into the 2nd again and we get 2 receivers. Its a possibility.

  11. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Initially, with the Bucs picking at No. 19, Joe thought there would be no way to fill one of the Bucs’ two greatest holes — wide receiver or running back — at that slot.” Obviously I’m missing something Joe … I thought this draft was fairly deep in RBs. WRs are a little thin at the top of the draft, but there seem to be several (Zay Jones being one) who could help us later in the draft.

@WhatdaBUCisthis … “This is THE MOST important offseason in our history.” We’re on exactly the same page … we’ve got a solid foundation, yet we’ve got a number of holes (on both offense & defense) that have to be addressed if we’re to make a playoff push this year and next year especially. Unfortunately FA looks to be a bit thin in our primary areas of need this year, and yet the possibility is there to pick up several starters and primary rotational players in key positions. Jackson or Stills would be quality FA additions I think, but not excited about A.P … would rather draft a RB with our 1st or 2nd pick.

  12. LakeLandBuc Says:

I would not spend a 1st round pick on a WR in this draft. This draft has a lot of good receivers. I would take Cooper Kupp in the 2nd round. Zay Jones in the 3rd if he’s still available when we pick. And KD Cannon in the 4th or 5th ( it depends on his combine showing).

  13. Joeypoppems Says:

And I agree with WhatdaBUC and Harry. Defense at #19 makes the most sense to me. I would prefer another CB over a DE but would be fine with either. We have a lot of questions at DE that need answers but if Smith Jones and Gholston are all back we have depth. Who do we have at CB after Grimes is a FA? Ryan Smith? No thanks…

  14. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @WhatdaBuc,

    “Barnett
    Harris
Taco…. NEED more Tanks in the trenches, MONSTERS in the middle., GORILLAS IN THE MIST.”

    Exactly!!

  15. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Yeah theres no way we should reach for a guy in round 1 just because he had a goog week at the seniorbowl.

  16. LakeLandBuc Says:

Ricky Seals-Jones is a big 6’5 WR from Texas A&M, similar to Mike Evans in height and speed. But the knock on him is his history of struggling with injuries. We can probably get him in the 6th or 7th round, Mike Evans really likes him.

  17. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Joey, so your saying CB, I like that, but who. I haven’t heard any of you guys name one this offseason yet. I think Ryan will be groomed by Grimes keeping Elliot and Jude for depth/nickel. But is there a Marcus Peters type CB in the draft that could be had at 19.
I’d be fine if there is one. But the line in the sand has to be drawn…

  18. Mike S Says:

I like Eddie Jackson out of Alabama in 2nd or 3rd he was a former CB plays S now could play the nickel and comes down physically in the box on run plays. Has a lot of versatility. Maybe a marlon Humphrey or teez tabor fall to us at 19. Although I don’t like taking a corner in first round.

  19. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

WhatA you mean out of Stills and Jackson???

  20. Bradinator Says:

I suspect we are going to get a WR or 2 in FA. I think we end up keeping Gholston, Jac Smith comes back, N. Spence completely healthy. We did have some trouble stopping the run so maybe DT or a run busting Safety. Wouldn’t surprise me if we went CB again given our draft position and the talent likely available. If Jabril Peppers is there, I think we’d take him. It’s weird to see us at 19. Really opens things up. Right tackle was an issue, but this is not a good draft for O-line. Myabe Ryan Ramszyk from Wisconsin?

  21. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Yes Nos Bos. Either one would work, though I prefer Stills
    Lol answer my question though

  22. USFBUC Says:

That first pick will be a CB or dlineman unless Howard, Davis/Williams, or Fournette/Cook fall to that spot.

  24. Bucsfanman Says:

There’s a lot that can happen between now and the draft that will probably change the strategy. First and foremost, weapons. We have to get Jameis some weapons. Second, I like the idea of addressing the trenches on both sides.
Barring a drop, I don’t see Cook making it to us at #19, and frankly, I’m not a huge fan of drafting RB in the 1st round. I think we can get value later. There will be some good RBs in later rounds.
@USF-I see why you were defending Mixon yesterday. I’m not opposed to drafting a guy like that, but I don’t have to like him as a person. I think he will be there in later rounds.

  25. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

That we need someone who knows the NFL speed, and space already to help Evans guide whom ever we draft to be our #2
Btw I do hate that line of thinking.. because we have “player A” we don’t need another one. We all do it, to fit our line of thinking. Top teams don’t think like that

  26. USFBUC Says:

@bucfanman If I had my choice I would only go after guys with clean records but the team isn’t in that position yet. I would rather the team go after Latavious Murray in FA so we can use our draft picks for things like CB, S, DLine, Oline.

    Draft
    • Charles Harris DE – Missouri – 6-3 | 255 (1st )
    • Cameron Sutton CB – Tennessee – 5-11 | 186 (2nd) <-
    • Dawuane Smoot DE – Illinois – 6-3 | 255 (2nd)
    • Jalen Reeves-Maybin – DB/LB Tennessee – 6-0 | 224 (4th)

Cameron Sutton is very solid corner/special teams ace.
If he drops do some injury concerns. He would be a nice pickup

  33. Joeypoppems Says:

    @WhatdaBUC

There are a bunch of very talented CBs in this draft. Both Florida CBs (Quincy Wilson and Jalen “Teez” Tabor) Tre’davious White, Marlon Humphrey. Quincy Wilson especially tho. He will be a very good CB. Better than VH3 imo.

  34. Bucsfanman Says:

Why Murray over retaining Martin? Don’t get me wrong, Murray’s a decent back. I’m just curious. I do like the idea of filling certain spots with FAs over draftees. It will be an interesting off-season considering the amount of needs we have.
The records are irrelevant to me. This country is practically founded on giving second chances. I think it boils down to personal preferences in certain instances. I’m not a GM, so really in the end, it doesn’t matter. And, you’re right in that we’re not in a position yet to dictate those aspects. We need football players.

  42. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Man picking at #19 is starting to feel like we’re in no man’s land…we’re real tweeners…not high enough to get Dalvin or Mike Williams…but not so low as to totally give up.

I gotta say though if we don’t get Dalvin…I am ready to give up 19 and see if we can’t add some more picks. If the right trade down deal comes up I won’t be unhappy if Licht can turn #19 into more picks.

BTW is it only me? I hate to play the race card but why doesn’t Christian McCaffery’s name ever come up here. Because white men can’t jump? LOL

Cris Collingsworth loves to tell the story of how he was the only white guy in the finals of his 100 yard dash at the Florida High school championships. Collinsworth also chuckles when he talks about shocking the black DB’s with his speed when he reached the Bengals.

McCaffery has all the tools and has put up impressive numbers. Shouldn’t his name come up just as much as Mixon’s?

  43. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Nosbos

He asked me if there which CBs I like and I answered. Please read the conversation before posting. Thank You.

  44. Joeypoppems Says:

Ignore the “if there” in my previous comment.

  45. LakeLandBuc Says:

I’m thinking we might pick Florida State FB ” Freddie Stevenson” in the 6th round. We need a versatile FB like Stevenson, who can run, catch and run-block and pass-block. Christian McCaffery should be a low 1st or high 2nd round pick. If we pass on him at 19 he won’t be available again, unless we trade up. Will Jason Licht take him at 19 remains to be seen. But I like him as a player, I would draft him. Joe Mixon is a different story, he will fall to the 4-5 rounds.

  46. Tom Edrington Says:

Zay is our all-time leading receiver for East Carolina and I would think with a team named the Buccaneers, they should have a Pirate on the roster…….

  47. Guzzie Says:

Stpetebuc….main reason McCaffery doesn’t come up is he’s listed at 200, not exactly workhorse lead back weight, he’s considered an offensive weapon in the Reggie Bush mold, he’s going to help any team that drafts him, but durability is a concern, he is 6’1, he can add weight, if he hits the combine at 210, he will get a lot more consideration to be a lead back, he’s viewed as a high end rotation back, not going to get the short yardage goal line work, Mixon is 6’1 227

  48. orlbucfan Says:

Collingsworth has always held his nose at the mere mention of the Bucs. Ironic as he graduated from Astronaut HS in Titusville and was a Gator standout. He figures Central Florida can’t handle a great NFL team. A-hole. He squirmed quite a few times on the tube when Tampa Bay decisively won the SB. This off-season will be interesting in a fun way for Bucs fans. 🙂

Tevin Coleman rush for 2,036 yards during his final season at Indiana U, he even caught 25 passes out of the backfield. He have 4.39 speed, good vision, good hands and a good blocker. And the scouts had a 1st round grade on him, but he slipped to the Falcons in the 3rd round. You really cant predict these GM’s.

  58. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I’m of the belief that if we are prolific in the backfield the WR opposite ME doesn’t have to be a top ten guy. He just needs to be able to win one on ones seeing is how having that type of balanced fire power would create one on ones for he and Brate working the middle of the field.

  62. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Nosbos

And for the record, the reason I keep saying there are a bunch of talented players at multiple positions is because it is true. This draft class is deep at a lot of the key positions the Bucs need to address (except OL). I’m going to do my homework when I get home from work and study the middle rounds graded defensive players. If I can find a few that I think will be great additions to this defense then that will open my mind to Dalvin Cook at #19 (The only players I would trade up for is 1 of the top 2 safeties).

If anyone has any suggestions of DBs and DL players that could be there in round 3 or later feel free to let me know.

  63. Kevin Says:

We need a stud….not flash in the pan.

  64. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

If we dont have to trade anything away, then I wouldn’t be outraged by the pick. Still think that we could find better value later in the draft, but It wouldnt be the absolute worst pick.

But you’re dead wrong about Joe Mixon. He runs between the tackles as good or better than any other running back in this draft class.

  65. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

I believe Marcus Maye, Free Safety with the Florida Gators will be a good selection in the 3rd or 4th round. He missed the last 4 games of last season with a injury. But he is a very good FS, he should be around in the 3rd or 4th.

  67. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

“If this is the case, perhaps Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht could trade back, acquire an extra pick or two, and still get Jones and provide #WeaponsForWinston.”….

I would be all for this if the players joe listed above are gone instead of reaching for a player….one player that I know that can help/improve our defense from day 1 would be LB-JARRAD DAVIS….daryl smith provided zero to little production on the field…his major contribution come off the field and in the classroom with kwon and LVD….

adding Jarrad Davis would fortify our linebacker unit and give us that speed and strength to keep containment….great in coverage….great rushing the passer…think another kwon but bigger(6’2/240)….plus we would get an extra pick or 2 as joe suggested and continue building depth and/or provide more weapons for Winston….GO BUCS!!!!

  72. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

  73. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Pretty sure kevin was talking about Zay Jones there guy…

And havent we already established that numbers in College arent that important? As Poppems has mentioned several times now, Donnel Pumphery’s numbers blow every other Rb out the water. He has roughly 2K more yards from scrimmage thab DC. That means he should be the first back off the board right????

  74. LakeLandBuc Says:

If Alabama OLB/DE Tim Williams falls to us at 19, I wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger. He’s probably the best “pure pass rusher” in the draft.

  75. Joeypoppems Says:

    @LakeLandBuc

Yea man the Gators had a lot of studs on their defense. When I was watching games of Quincy Wilson and when I watched Dalvin Cook vs Florida it was hard to not watch Caleb Brantley.

I havent watched anything yet, but off the top of my head if we go:

    1) Dalvin Cook
    2) Caleb Brantley
    3) Zay Jones
    4) Eddie Jackson
    5) Jeremy Sprinkle

That is sounding pretty good to me. I just have to watch more guys.

  76. LakeLandBuc Says:

    Joeypoppems…that’s a good solid draft.

  77. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Assuming free agency goes swimmingly for us, my dream draft would be somethibg close to this.

    1. O.J. Howard.
    2. T.J. Watt
    3. Dede Westbrook/ Curtis Samuel/ Joe Mixon
    4. Samaje Perine
    5. Josh Reynolds
    6. Donnel Pumphrey/ Tarik Cohen.

  78. Joeypoppems Says:

Josh Reynolds in the 5th? I hope that happens lol

  79. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

You’re right its definitely a stretch for him to fall that far. But ive seen some negative reviews on his size and that he struggles against press coverage. I think he will go sooner but a man can dream.

  80. Joeypoppems Says:

Yea his weight and struggles against press coverage are linked together. If he adds some muscle he will obviously get bigger and stronger, which will help against press coverage. Apparently he is aiming for 200 lbs (he weighed at 189) idk if he can hit that before the combine but if he gets any bigger it will only help his stock.

Man what a value he would be in round 5 tho lol. Makes me hope he loses weight lol

  81. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Listening to everyone want to sign T Pryor did not get me very excited – I was maybe more into DeSean Jackson, but just bc the choices are a little limited. Then I noticed the stats on Taylor Gabriel. While with CLE in 2015 he caught 28 passes out of 48 targeted for a 8.6 yards/catch. This year – with a real QB and having Julio Jones to spread the D, Gabriel caught 35 of 50 targets for 16.5 y/c.

Pryor, again with no QB and no talent to open things up caught 77 of 140 targets for 13 y/c and over 1000 yards, PLUS his 40 time of 4.38 is almost exactly what DeSean Jackson’s is of 4.35.

OK, I am officially in the camp os signing Pryor. My gosh, put him next to Evans and having Jameis throw to him would be sick. Then we just need a RB in round 2 or 3.

  82. Joeypoppems Says:

You just have to hope Pryor doesn’t get the franchise tag from Cleveland. I am curious how much he thinks he is worth lol.

@ harry in costa rica, A whole lot of people on here would love to sign Pryor. The issue with that is Cleveland has the most cap room in the league, and they’ve expressed that they really want to keep him. He has also said he wants to stay in Cleveland. So our chamces of signing him, wiyhout Grossly over paying for him, are extremely slim.

  84. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    @Harry
I’ve been saying that bout Pryor all along. Outbid the Browns if they don’t franchise him. Pay him whatever… Realistically lol. Sign Stills and you have added NFL elite speed. Grab Murray/A.P.
    Now we set.
    Big dreams? Not really
    OJ Howard falls to us
    Winston’s weapons

  85. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Don’t know him personally. But if any of the stories about his fire to win are true. We NEED him. Does Evans sign off on him… He’s got some insight. Cleveland might offer more, but we can offer a chance to grow and WIN now
    Winston
    Evans
    Pryor

  86. Joeypoppems Says:

I mean…. If he had such a passion and desire to win then why on Earth would he want to stay in Cleveland? I’m not saying he doesn’t have that mentality, just kinda funny lol

  87. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    @Joey,
THAT is a very good point. NO franchise in the NFL is as incompetent as CLE. And, they still don’t have a QB (kind of important if you are a WR, lol), AND even with all the draft choices, this maybe the worst year for QBs in the draft.

    @WhatdaBUC,
Adding Stills with Pryor… that would just be too much to hope for, lol. OMG we would be a different team!

It will be very interesting to see who we can pry away from their team in FA. ATL did a friggin amazing job grabbing Sanu in FA and Gabriel as a cast off from CLE – WHERE WERE YOU LICHT?!?!?!

  88. 813bucboi Says:

no doubt I would love pryor on this team but we cant over pay….not with the contracts of m.evans, k.pamphile, w.gholston, a.spence coming up and other FA’s we plan to sign….I doubt I want him tho, but only at the right price….GO BUCS!!!

  89. 813bucboi Says:

@harry…good point…atl also got alex mack via trade which has taken their offense to another level….they made moves that produced immediate impact…we don’t need splashy names but we do need guys that can come in, be counted on week in and week out and produce….

    Bennie Logan
    Kenny Stills
    Mario Addison
    Pierre Garcon
    Ron Leary

these guys plus the draft would put us in the BIG GAME next year…GO BUCS!!!

  90. Dirks Great GranPappy Says:

Funny how Nole calls every who says there is other talent in the draft a hater yet he hates on every single player and person who is not named dalvin. Talk about a true hater. Sheesh

  91. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

@pappy you’re a straight savage bro lol. And yeah, you’ll get used to the hypocrisy.

  92. USFBUC Says:

@bucfanman I like Murray because he is a bigger back, with proven success in the NFL, and he still has a few years left in him. He along with Martin and Rodgers on new contracts would give us some competition. Sims would be a casualty in my plan but we should be able to get Martin and Rodgers signed to reasonable contracts. Murray would probably have the largest contract of the three so he would hopefully pan out as the best of the bunch. Martin can clearly be a good back when he is not injured or distracted and Rodgers would give us really solid depth.

This would give us the ability to address other positions in the draft.

  93. USFBUC Says:

@WhatdaBUCisthis oh I don’t need saints on the roster just if I had my choice between similar players I would go with the one with a clean background because of how the NFL is cracking down on players now. The best ability is availability.

  94. USFBUC Says:

@Joeypoppems Pryor is rumored to looking for around 10m per year

  95. Joeypoppems Says:

    @USFBUC

Really? 10m? That is higher than I was expecting. I was thinking around 8m seeing how Alshon Jeffery’s market value is a little over 11m and Desean Jackson is in the ballpark of 7m. I guess I would rather give him 10m than AP lol

  96. USFBUC Says:

That’s just what I read or saw on a Browns blog or something. His value to teams could be lower than that but I think he stays in Cleveland anyhow.

  97. Joeypoppems Says:

    yea i agree

  98. USFBUC Says:

@whatthebucisthis thank you for the shout out, I try to stay reasonable.

  99. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

    Pryor must be a BUC
10 milli is ALOT but, that speed and desire make it worth it to me. We have the money, he’s young is my point. Not a bridge player but someone who can grow and be a intricate part of the offense. Along with Stills
Realtalk though @USF. we all lose it from time to time
I called for GMC AND LVD earlier this year. Didn’t like the effort I was seeing AT THAT TIME. I’m doing much better now lol

  100. USFBUC Says:

lol I do agree with your sentiment that this is a very important off season for us. Need a FA like last year and a draft like 2015.

  101. WhatdaBUCisthis Says:

Got a funny feeling this years draft will truly be a crapshoot if we don’t address the skill position in FA to start off. Sign Leary for the right side. Hope Sweezy can come back. If we can TRULY solidify them then we can concentrate on trench warfare come draft time.
I’m on some by any means necessary sh!t sign Poe for the D-line. Signing Pryor and Stills with the addition of Leary is something I would look at and say… OK the team is hear to compete. Hell trade up for Cook for the big homie Nos Bos
    Realtalk
    Let’s do this

  102. Joeypoppems Says:

You had me until you said trade up lol
