Making The Case For McDougald
January 28th, 2017Last year there was a clear pattern when Bucs fans took to griping.
If Bucs fans weren’t throwing hissy fits over the offensive line, they were throwing rocks at Bucs safeties. In particular, Chris Conte became a favorite target of these Bucs fans.
One Bucs safety who didn’t quite get as much criticism, for good reason, is Bradley McDougald. Possibly soon to be a free agent, Bucs beat guy Woody Cummings suggests it would be smart for AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to keep McDougald, despite what the PFF tribe may think of him. Cummings typed this for Florida Football Insider.,
It’s clear from their evaluation that PFF focused solely on McDougald’s pass defense, which is fine, but it left out the fact that McDougald ranked second among Bucs defenders in tackles this year with 91.
That suggests a couple of things: First, McDougald was probably a little more active in the run game than the Bucs wanted him to be, which is an indication the front seven didn’t do quite as well a job in that area as needed.
Second, it shows just how good a run defender he has become, which means that in addition to being able to play free, which he does rather well, McDougald can also play strong safety, which could be McDougald’s role going forward with the Bucs.
Joe does his best to ignore the PFF tribe’s rankings on any player on a quiet, calm Saturday afternoon.
Joe doesn’t think McDougald is bad at all. Keith Tandy is under contract and he really seemed to have turned the corner late in the season after Conte got hurt. McDougald would be a nice piece of the puzzle to keep, and not an expensive piece either.

I say bring him back. Would be nice to have all our starters back from last year. With that said, we can still upgrade at both safety spots
January 28th, 2017 at 1:48 pm
I agree with keeping him.
January 28th, 2017 at 2:21 pm
Tandy and McDougald are decent enough players as not to have to draft a higher round pick on the Saftey position. Sure, they could be upgraded, but I’d rather see RB, WR, DL, OL with our first 4 draft picks. In no particular order. I think we could get the best value for our picks if we go DL, WR, RB, OL in that order. I might even skip the OL and draft another DL in the 4th. Licht could be able to find another Pamphile in rounds 5 or 6.
January 28th, 2017 at 2:39 pm
I think if we have value then upgrade. If not, oh well. Don’t reach and don’t trade up. And not Jabrill in Rd 1.
January 28th, 2017 at 2:58 pm
Yea I’m comfortable with the Tandy Man and Bradley in the safety spots. On defense we need DT n DE n SLB… Imho. I’m hoping Ryan Smith is the one being groomed to be Grimes replacement in 18 giving him some time this year out there. Elliot could also be in the mix. Upgrade the line. Get Poe AND Campbell/Addison in here… Minor tweak to the roster and BOOM.
January 28th, 2017 at 3:05 pm
Why does every1 want another LBer? Don’t u remember we drafted a lolb LAST YEAR? Lolb in a 43 defense is VERY devalued. Whenever a offense comes out with 3 or 4 WRs our defense goes into nickel and the Lolb comes off the field. So it’s not really a big deal.
January 28th, 2017 at 3:23 pm
There’s no reason on earth not to upgrade the safety position. He’s an OK player in a passing league his run defense doesn’t mean squat
January 28th, 2017 at 3:30 pm
This shouldn’t even be a question..you don’t get rid of a player that plays and makes good plays..and he’s gotten so good this year..bring back the starters we had last year and just get some weapons for Jameis..
January 28th, 2017 at 3:57 pm
Mike Evans GOAT
Uh, maybe I smoke too much, or old man time is catching up to me… Who did we draft last year at LB? I totally don’t remember. Anyway, D. Smith won’t be back, I don’t think so anyway. Listen I DON’T CARE how snaps a certain player is out there. What I DO CARE about is that player a MONSTER.
I love the fact that we became a pass first defense as the second half played out. But when you have that run package in WE NEED a SLB… How is that a big mystery for you. So yea who is this LB we got last year again
January 28th, 2017 at 4:04 pm
I say we keep him. With that being said if there is the chance to upgrade the safety position Im all for it.
January 28th, 2017 at 4:08 pm
Devante bond is the epitome of a run stopping lber. He had a redshirt year this year. Your passive aggressiveness makes u look stupid when ur wrong doesn’t it?
January 28th, 2017 at 4:19 pm
Not trying to be anything but someone who’s looking for info on our team. My bad, not trying to be a a$s.
I forgot about Bond. That’s all.
You are one of the few posters I like that i like to read. Not trying to eat with homie.
With that being said… If all the top offensive prospects are off the board and somehow Barnett is there, would you pick him. I would. Let em learn from Ayers. Monster in the making.
January 28th, 2017 at 4:21 pm
Not trying to war with you homie^^^
Edit button please JOE

All good
January 28th, 2017 at 4:41 pm
No to barnnet my current feeling is to trade back to the late 1st and take a DT. I like Cooper Kupp in the 2nd and use some of the picks we got in the trade back to move up and take Mixon mid to late 2nd
January 28th, 2017 at 5:05 pm
All for bringing back McDougald, at the right price of course. However, not willing to hand McDougald the starter’s job unless he earns it. Right now on the roster at Safety we have Tandy and … oh ya, no one else. Unless of course you include Isaiah Johnson, rookie from SC who’s on the practice squad. When you only have ONE guy on the active roster who plays a position (like Safety) that calls for TWO guys, then you have what’s known as A HOLE (2-1=1?). Bucs not only need to re-sign McDougald, they also need to (1) sign another FA Safety, and (2) draft a Safety. Too many holes … too little depth.
January 28th, 2017 at 5:10 pm
Kupp in the 2nd is a little steep, depending on what he runs at the combine. Mixon in the 2nd is too steep for this draft class of running backs. I really think mixon could still be on the board in the 4th, and if not him perine, Gallman, clement or a few other options may be.
January 28th, 2017 at 5:13 pm
Kareem hunt ain’t no puppy. Lol
January 28th, 2017 at 5:15 pm
Mohiska, of agree that Kupp in the second is steep, but he will definitely be gone by the time we pick in the third round. A trade up would probably be needed to get him in the third, if he’s there. Kupp is my guy!
January 28th, 2017 at 5:16 pm
@ ^^^^
I’m sure the patriots or the packers would love to see Mixon on the board late 2nd. And Kupp is gonna run a 4.4 he may sneak into the mid 2nd. Plus he’s exactly what we need, a speedy we with HANDS

@ mojiska
Mixon is the 2nd best rb in this class behind cook and in front of fournette (because he can’t catch) so I think steeling him in the late 2nd would be great

“Joe doesn’t think McDougald is bad at all”
Yea – but is he good? Good enough to start? I’d say from watching him the last 3 years the answer to that is – not really. If Tandy can pick up where he left off end of 2016 and maintain that level – that he’s solid as a starter. McDougald? Not so much. Time for an upgrade at safety. Resign McDougald to a back-up level contract and bring him back to compete – but Licht needs to find more talent at Safety whether in FA or the draft.
Of course landing Eric Berry is the dream scenario but the chances of that are very very low…
There are 3 highly rated safeties slated to go in the top 20 in this year’s draft. If a FA is not signed, and the right player falls to us at 19, then a talented safety in the 1st round HAS to be a consideration.

HE11 no to peppers if that’s who ur referring to
January 28th, 2017 at 6:21 pm
Cooper Kupp man. Get that kid.
January 28th, 2017 at 6:43 pm
I checked in on the senior bowl a couple times. I feel y’all with the call for Cooper. I like Reynolds
January 28th, 2017 at 6:48 pm
Hard hitter…pointed that out before. Only has upside
January 28th, 2017 at 6:53 pm
1. OJ Howard
2. Donte Foreman
3. Carlos Watkins
January 28th, 2017 at 7:29 pm
Peppers=Barron. No thanks.
January 28th, 2017 at 7:35 pm
^Peppers is a better athlete than Barron.
January 28th, 2017 at 7:40 pm
Pepper< Barron. At least Barron has some ball skills
January 28th, 2017 at 7:51 pm
@rrsrq the reviews of Watkins from practice at the senior bowl weren’t great. We should probably pass on a guy who knows his future is being decided on and doesn’t show up.
January 28th, 2017 at 8:17 pm
Sign Stephen Gilmore, Eric Berry, Calais Campbell, Kenny Stills, and Desean Jackson.
Cut Doug Martin, Goader Cherilius, and Evan Smith.
Draft BPA, and don’t hesitate to treads back if afforded the opportunity and a guy we like isn’t there.
January 28th, 2017 at 8:39 pm
@WhatdaBUCisthis
Josh Reynolds and Zay Jones impressed me today. I would take one of them over Cooper Kupp or Taywan Taylor in round 2
January 28th, 2017 at 8:59 pm
Peppers will play Saftey until a team realizes he’s better at Linebacker.
January 28th, 2017 at 10:23 pm
I am against John Ross from what I saw in the three games I watched him. Of Course I obviously am not an expert but I think his speed blinds some people. Dynamic is not measurable. He doesn’t seem to be that.
January 28th, 2017 at 10:25 pm
These chicks at the XGames snowboarding are………….well……….they are all kinda cute.

Just got done watching the Senior Bowl and the only two that stood out from everyone else that I could imagine playing for the Bucs are Zay Jones ECU and Josh Reynolds T A&M… Playmakers… Just a fan, so I’m trusting in Licht… I’m excited about our team because we finally have a GM and coach that can put it all together… Go Bucs!
January 29th, 2017 at 6:20 am
Too many people act like a player has to be superstar, a nation-wide household name, but the reality is that rarely happens. Look at the Seahawks and Patriots, for example. They have plenty of big names and others few other than their fans have heard of. McDougald and Tandy are both keepers, and frankly, Conte has been inconcistent but he can still provide some depth.
