Gil Brandt: No Interest In Glennon

The proud Mike Glennon Mob is as ludicrous as the other radical Bucs fan groups fueled by media and blinded by pewter and red love.
Think the Kenny Bell Mob, the Russell Shepard Flock, the Doug Martin Apologists and the exploding Will Gholston Gang.
All have the same thing in common: overvaluing players just because they wear the uniform, give pretty quotes, and/or have secured a place in the hearts of fans who misguidedly think loyalty wins championships.
Take Shepard and Bell; various media outlets (not Joe) were pimping these guys as breakthrough receiving talents the past two years — without a tangible reason why.
Then there’s the Martin fanboys. They ignore that Martin has been injured three of the past four seasons, is coming off a bad year running the football, has a drug problem and will miss the first three games of 2017. These apologists scream that he’s a must-keep on the Bucs roster and blame the offensive line.
Gholston? He’s a part-time player who doesn’t deserve the free-agency loot he’s inevitably seeking, a stud run-stuffer in a passing league and a QB-strong division.
That brings Joe back to Glennon, who admirably explained to JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman all about how he’s going to test the free agency market in March.
Two weeks ago, big-name media types weeks Twittered about how Glennon could command $13 million+ per season on the market. But that Glennon chatter has gone awfully quiet, as expected. (Joe assumes Glennon’s agent went on vacation.)
On Wednesday, former Cowboys personnel chief and legendary scouting guru Gil Brandt penned a deep look at options for eight quarterback-needy NFL teams. Glennon’s name didn’t show up in the story.
No surprise.
In March, Joe hopes Glennon quickly realizes his best chance of playing meaningful football for a good team is in Tampa, where the starting quarterback likes to sacrifice his body.
Glennon re-signing for good backup money would be a win for all.

I say resign him to a 5yr deal worth 6mil per or with 14 guaranteed.we get a great backup,he gets a superbowl ring or 2 before the contact expires and could end up playing for a good team for a change.

Brandt’s article is pretty weak. He basically just likes Romo and Garoppolo andnin the other cases says the teams should draft from one of the weakest QB draft classes in a while or keep their current QB they are unhappy with. The truth is that Glennon could easily replace a few current starters and the team would see little to no drop off.
For our purposes I would love to keep Glennon on a backup QB salary because he is probably one of the better backups in the league.

I don’t personally believe Glennon is going to succeed anywhere as a starter. That said, we’re talking about media heads here, not actual teams.
If reporters were actually held accountable for what they say, we could believe them, but that isn’t the case. They can easily ‘quote “team sources” at random and no one questions them.
I think there will be interest in Glennon. I think he’s going to get at most $6 million per year. More would be surprising. Probably less.
I still maintain that Glennon will remain a Buccaneer.

It only takes one team, just one, to offer Glennon bottom-tier starter money ($8 million a year) and he’s gone. Period. There’s a good chance that happens because this is a QB league and a lot of teams don’t have one.

Glennon has grown stale sitting on the bench. Looking more like a career backup. Nothing to be ashamed of about that. Oh that’s right he ran out of bounds short of a first down once. The play that shook JBF haters to this day.

That article starts off by saying how the draft is around the corner and teams are looking towards it already.
Obviously they didn’t talk about Glennon, they barely talked about any Free Agents, there is mention of trading for Romo or Garapollo. The rest is all draft talk.

Joe you forgot to include the oline apologists who refuse to acknowledge how our run blocking deteriorated from the previous season. Its been a long time since ive seen so many plays with running backs get hit in the backfield. maybe it was because of predictable play calling or too many formations with the 6th olineman but still. I dont get how you cant see how much worse we got at run blocking this year. Last year we were one of of the best run blocking onlines in football and didnt come close to meeting that level this year. And this has nothing to do with Doug Martin. I think we should cut him.

Hope you are right and I suspect you are. At the moment IMHO MG8 would be far better served to remain with the Bucs. Hard to imagine #3 playing 3 years, 48 straight games without missing one.
If MG8 came in for a few games and saved a season for us..THEN..he could go all Brock Osweiler. Even though he’d be a backup here we probably represent his best chance at eventually getting a starting gig.

OK accept your point somewhat although Quizz didn’t fare that badly.
But the question is how much did it hurt us to only 80% of an Oline. We had NO RT….if the RT is a swinging gate what does that do to the rest of the line.
I like Gosder personally and appreciate him beating his body up another year but the poor dude is done…stick a fork in him. I’m hoping Dot’s horrid year is mostly due to injuries but he obviously didn’t play in ’16 like he did ’14…but he needed Gosder to bail him out in 15 and last year Gosder just wasn’t up to the task.
IF we had a stud RT this OLine would look formidable. Yeah Hawley is not top shelf but I think Marpet and Pamphile could help cover his deficiencies and if we draft an RB like Foreman…best blocking back of all prospects…that too could help protect the franchise…gotta keep #3 healthy!

Yea I dont even think we need major changes to our oline. For the most part they are young and I like the pieces they have. I would like an upgrade at center but there isnt much at that position in free agency or the draft this year. We are also most likely stuck with one more year of demar dotson. I think the oline is capable of getting better at run blocking and that they just under performed at that are this year.

There is zero incentive for him to re-sign in Tpa. If he can get a deal in Buffalo, NYJ’s, Houston, Cleveland (would have to think long and hard on that one). He wants an opportunity to compete for a starting gig. There is nothing wrong with that.

At least 1 team will offer Glennon $7-$8M per year with an opportunity to compete for the starting job. He’s likely to get more than 1 offer in that range or better. The Bucs shouldn’t and won’t be willing to pay more than $3-$4M for even a high quality back-up. So IMO the chances of Glennon coming back are very low.

Funny Joe is making fun of apologists and mobs when they were the biggest culprits in hyping up Kenny Bell and Shepard. Not sure who you are referencing, but Joe was never hyping Bell and Shepard as quality NFL receivers.–Joe

I’m not a Glennon fanboy but for people questioning his play outside of yards for the season his rookie performance was statistically similar to that of Winston. He was almost a carbon copy of Andy Daltons, Matt Ryan, RG3, Russel Wilson, Big Bens rookie seasons as well. Other QBs that outperformed him in only yards as a rookie are Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, and Cam Newton. I’ll post a link to my source if the site lets me.

According to SI these are the best rookie QB performances of all time. You have to add in Glennons average stats to compare them because most of the guys on this list played more games but the numbers don’t lie, unless you bend the numbers and compare him to seasoned NFL veterans which some have done to down play Glennons ability.
We likely won’t ever know if he could have been a starter because he has fallen into that backup label. I would be fine with him as our backup for a good price but don’t bash the guy without looking at his stats against his peers.

Why don’t we just do what the Patriots do and draft a QB every few years. They are always contenders and they don’t seem to mind not having a veteran at that spot. If it’s ok for them to go young with the backup, why not us?

Ok , currently the Browns are not slated to pick a qb high in the draft. Joe, you mean to tell me that Cleveland wouldn’t at least be interested in a guy who threw 18 tds as a rookie with a hot garbage team vs the collection of bucket p..as that they have at QB? 4 Cleveland qbs threw 15 tds passes last year. Why would anyone give the Patriots a kings ransom for Garropolo,another Patriot flavor of the month who’s only started a few games? ( Matt Cassell)

Im curious as to why Joe would even want Glennon to stay. His whole career, Joe has been trying to get rid of him. Bashed him endlessly. Disrespected him and his stats (which btw are very similiar to Winstons even though he started on much worse teams with worse coaches) every chance he got. Now the Joes are reading between lines and advocating for Glennon to stay LMAO. To funny. Take the money Mike and go fulfill your dream to start somewhere. Wish nothing but the best for you. Only losers would choose to be a backup instead of trying to be the best. No chance that happens.

Gil Brandt has always simply ignored the Bucs, as in he doesn’t do any Buccaneer homework when he makes opinions. When the Bucs were headed to the Super Bowl he said the Raiders were going to win because no one could prepare for their offense in one week. It’s like he didn’t even know Gruden was the coach, and they faced a version of the offense in practice every day that season. He also seemed to know nothing about the Bucs defense which was having an all-time historic season also.
I know that is a long time ago, but I am unaware of him ever saying anything positive or negative regarding the Bucs. It is like the team doesn’t exist. Like most of the media, he follows the big market teams, a few historic exceptions like Green Bay and Pittsburgh, and tha’s pretty much it.
Brandt is on SiriusXM NFL Radio four days a week or so. He even hosted Dirk Koetter on his show with Alex Marvez on most Friday nights during the season and spent time with Koetter when the Bucs were in Dallas. He knows all about the Bucs.–Joe

Yup, the backup job would be win-win for all. What I been saying, still do. Glennon is well-suited for that role, and has no business starting for any team. He may be in the top 64 QBs in the world, but he’s not in the top 32, and never will be. Any team he starts for will still be looking for their franchise guy. Glennon has had 18 games to show upside as a starter; he didn’t pull a Dak. He doesn’t have it. He pulled a Glennon. He couldn’t unseat McCown. Yeah, he didn’t have the same team Dak had, but he had a chance to show he’s a leader, a playmaker, a gamechanger….a factor. And he didn’t. I expect he can come off the bench and NOT LOSE games. Can he win games? In 18 shots, his team won 5, and only one of those was due to his particular effort. Sign him up. Make a perrenial millionaire. Just not ridiculously rich in QB terms. We could use him here for sure.

Shepard is excellent on special teams and is a key figure in the locker room. However, if he was so good as a wide receiver, how come the Bucs are in the market for wide receivers this offseason? Yes, plural.
Shepard barely caught half of his targeted passes. Let’t not get carried away that he is a blossoming Lynn Swann.

@Buc1987 – then there is no reason to trash the player, his stats speak for themselves. Anyone who trashes a guy who had a similar start to his career as some HoFers and current starting QBs is just dumb, stretching stats to fit their argument, a homer for another QB, or has some other position that invalidates their argument. The stats from his rookie season are the only thing we have to actually evaluate him as a player since nobody here is a pro scout.

“Glennon played on bad team.” Is there any chance a big part of the “bad teams” was poor QB play???? You guys seriously must not have been watching this guy back when he was starting. The offense was dreadful in no small part because the QB was bad. Winston had one other player, ME, last year and a bunch of UPS drivers out there trying play receiver and Winston made it work. Glennon was incapable of elevating the team. Go back and actually watch all of his games again. You are lying to yourself if you think this guy is good enough to be a starter…..anywhere.
