Bucs Will Draft No Earlier Than No. 12 In 2017

Joe has been performing mathematics on the NFL Draft this morning while listening to Bucs Uncensored.
What a life Joe has!
Eleven teams have worse records than the Bucs.
So without crunching every possible strength-of-schedule tiebreaker, it’s possible a loss Sunday and an 8-8 Bucs finish could land them with the 12th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
However, a Bucs victory would leave them with a 9-7 record and only 12 teams are guaranteed to have a better record. So in theory, (again without the wacky tiebreakers) the Bucs could be selecting as low as No. 20 overall.
Likely, of course, the Bucs will draft somewhere in between No. 12 and No. 20.
Joe absolutely is not rooting against the Bucs on Sunday just to help the draft position. When the ball kicks off, Joe is all-in on a Bucs victory.
Wherever the Bucs select (No. 18?), general manager Jason Licht will have serious work on his hands. The Bucs have holes and the fan base feels urgency (healthy urgency) after an encouraging season.
Hopefully, the newest young Buccaneer won’t need to be brainwashed.

In the past, I’ve been in on the losing for draft position camp, so this isn’t just a platitude that I’m throwing out just to do it. I’m all in for a win as well, even though it will mean a lower draft pick. I think that what will do more to get the team and the fan base jacked up earlier in the season next year will be a win to end the season on and a winning record to look back at while we’re awaiting the 2017 kickoff. We’ve seen that Licht can find plenty of value with later picks, so I’m not concerned about him needing to have access to no-brainers picks necessarily. I trust our scouting department to find us a gem in the middle of the first, and maybe even the second rounds.

You know how we talk about complimentary football? We need a complimentary offseason from everyone in our front office. This offseason is Jason lichts prime time Sunday night game so to speak. We have a lot of promise but a lot of holes still need to be filled. You want to change a losing culture? Get the field general more weapons via draft and a smart free agency period.

I think that our lack of offensive tools finally caught up with us the last few games. Hats off to Koetter for doing what I think was a truly masterful job at squeezing blood out of our turnip of an offense. Outside of Evans, who everyone knew we were going to, we have truly no one for Jameis to throw to. Add to that the running game doing nothing for us. Somehow, Jameis was still able to get Evans the ball regularly and even found a way to get Brate the ball regularly in some very tight windows.
It all caught up to us the past two weeks. Our roster isn’t going to improve during this week, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they struggle again this week. I think it shows that we finally have a coach that can coach players up but there comes a point where you just need the horses. You need to have some talent. You put enough on tape and the defenses will figure it out. There comes a point where you need to have guys that can just line up and be better than the guy across from them.

We need picks at so many positions its entirely possible a top player at his position will still be available at pick 17 for example.
We will also address some of our needs in FA…..so that will give us some direction in the draft.
I’d like to see a WR, TE & Olineman for offense.
And a DT, D, S for defense…..perhaps even another CB.

Please Jason Licht take the fullback from Temple in 5-6th round. He can block and open holes. The ground game will be much improved. This kid knows his role and does the job.

All I’ll say is this a few weeks ago coach K commented that “Fameis needs better football players to play with”. I don’t kbow y’all trnslated that statement but to my ear that sounded like they plan to aquire some more firepower.

No more playoff chatter? I forgot it’s December and we went from Contender to Pretender. So let’s focus on the draft and who get fired. Maybe the creative Jason Licht will trade a 1st and 2nd round pick to move up to draft a Center. lol this is too funny, rebuild, rebuild, rebuild, how long does it takes to build a team? It seems like the Yucs have been rebuilding for the past 10 seasons.

Back to back Grand Slams by Licht? I had no idea Joe. Man you’d think we’d have a playoff team with 8/8 big time draft picks. What’s holding us back or is it that maybe he’s hitting single and doubles. Joe do you hope the Bucs win and go 9-7 and draft 20 or lose go 8-8 and draft 15th?

@I know why – Evidently you don’t know how grand slams work. They necessarily consist of singles and double that are brought in by a home run….. So, yes, that’s exactly what Joe is saying. He’s hit on 8 very solid players. Not all are super stars, but they’re pretty good and they’ll get better.

As I’ve asked about in other articles. ..would it be a good deal to trade Martin and pick up a descent 2nd pick so that the bucs may be able to get a DL.WR..OL….looks like J Rodgers is a great replacement for Martin with a little better speed

I think there could probably be a good chance that Martin could be a draft day trade. I doubt that they would take him off of the roster without a quality back on the roster. Rodgers is good, but he’s one injury away from leaving us with nobody.

Patrick In Va, I was waiting until December (when the lights goes out). And the Falcons have been drafting better than any team in the NFC South. Their draft put our so-call grand slam to shame. Our 2015 grand slam Jameis Winston, Donovan Smith, Ali Marpet, Kwon Alexander. The Falcons 2015 draft Vic Beasley, Jalen Collins, Tevin Coleman, Justin Hardy, Grady Jarrett.

@Lakeland – I fail to see your point. Since that draft we’re 3-1 against the Falcons in head to head matchups. Also, you seem to subscribe to the idea that a lot of Bucs fans do where just because someone else did well that means that we can’t have done well also. They got good return on their drafted players. Good job guys. So did we. Our #1 pick was a pro bowler in his rookie season. Theirs was invisible. Our second round picks paved the way for the second leading rusher in the league. Kwon was on his way to being the defensive rookie of the year had it not been for the suspension.
What is it exactly that you’re arguing?

It seems like (since Gruden) we have finally found a coach that is continuously learning how to take care of business. That’s what I believe and this is a good, young, developing football team. We continue to have nice drafts and I have a feeling we’re going to try to make a big bang in the free agency/trade market this year so all the haters just shut up and be excited about kicking the crap outta the kitty cats on Sunday and about what next year will be like.

There will be plenty of premium wide receivers in free agency. I can easily see us getting one of those, then drafting a playmaker like Dede Westbrook in the 2nd or 3rd round.

i see alot of mock drafts and they see car and NO saints getting fourette and cook on the first round

People want to trade DM22, nobody is trading for him and if so, it will be late round, we kept our only tradable piece on the roster playing backup quarterback. I’m a huge DM fan, but another younger back would be helpful, needs to be a three down back that makes CS34 expendable. Lot of holes on the team, but interior offense and defensive lineman

Point I will make is..Remember bucs had a all new defensive staff in 016 and really didn’t play well until about the eight week I watched every game and I know personlly that our defense cost us at least 3 wins 8 and 3 is11 wins Atlanta had both defensive and offensive staffs in place from 015

WHO the Bucs draft could largely depend on who they SIGN in FREE AGENCY.
If they land Alshon Jeffrey and Stephon Gilmore they won’t be using their #1 pick on a WR or CB and could draft “the best available player” such as Fournette or Cook (if they drop that far … which I doubt as both are top 10 talents) imo.
Personally I think the guys the Bucs will consider for their 1st round pick are ALL WR’s and DB’s (CB or S) such as:
Mike Williams, WR
Corey Davis, WR
John Ross, WR
CB (There are TONS of good corners in this draft … maybe the strongest corner back draft I’ve ever seen)
Jabril Peppers, S/LB
Jamaal Adams, S
Malik Hooker, S
If the team misses on a #2 WR in free agency I expect them to draft a wideout with their #1 pick … unless both Mike Williams and Corey Davis are off the board, at which point I think they’d draft a safety … I see them drafting a CB in the second or 3rd round.
I’d honestly be pretty surprised if they don’t draft a WR, CB and S in the first 4 rounds … unless they hit a home run in free agency.
The perfect off-season to me would be to see the team sign Jeffrey and Gilmore in free agency along with an inexpensive S, LB and DT and then use their #1 pick on Fournette or Cook, their 2nd round pick on Center Pat Elflein and their 3rd round pick on Tight End Jake Butt while using their last four picks on “the best available player”.
However, what I think will happen is that they will end up drafting a WR in the 1st round, a CB in the 2nd round and probably a LB, DT, S, TE and C with their final 5 picks.
I really, really wish they would have traded Mike Glennon for a pick at the trade deadline this year … losing him for nothing was just non-sensical in my opinion.
Regardless I do expect 11 wins and a playoff berth out of the Bucs next year.
