Jameis Fails To Step Up… Again
December 24th, 2016There is no doubt in Joe’s eyes that America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, will be the best quarterback in Bucs history and may just lead this team to the Promised Land, if only by his sheer will power alone.
But Jameis is not there yet. Once again, Jameis showed that while he is a good quarterback, it is fairly obvious he is but 22-years old and, had he not come out in the NFL draft early, would still be a starter at Florida State.
Jameis threw for 277 yards and a pair of touchdowns. A nice game, yes, but unfortunately facing future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees, Jameis had to go toe-to-toe with the pride of Purdue, and Jameis was not up to the task.
Simply put, Jameis summed up the game perfectly.
“I had two turnovers and the other guy had none,” Jameis said.
The other guy is Brees.
And, yes, that was the difference in the game.
Jameis’ first interception came after Josh Huff’s bonehead play on the kick to open the third quarter.
Two plays later from his own end zone, it appeared Jameis threw into double-coverage. To be fair, Mike Evans, running down the left sideline, was squeezed short on his route. Seconds later, Saints touchdown. New Orleans 20, Tampa Bay 7.
In the fourth, the Bucs had the ball deep in Saints territory when it sure looked like Jameis forced a ball to Russell Shepard. Jairus Byrd, reading the play like a book, raced across the field from the right side and picked Jameis, Byrd’s second of the day.
So Jameis’ picks at least cost the Bucs a touchdown and maybe more. Perhaps 10 points… or more.
Joe is a believer in America and will continue to be so. But Joe has to call it like he sees it and today, once again in a big game, Jameis comes up short.
And so did the Bucs.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:37 pm
Jameis did not step up when he had too because of the poor defensive play. Koetter did not call a very good game in the first half. Mike smith defense stunk again….
December 24th, 2016 at 8:37 pm
The season is over, been a fun ride. Too many games we should have won that we didn’t. We aren’t there yet. We might not even be this competitive next season.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:37 pm
It’s unfair to compare Jameis to Brees, Brees has more weapons at his disposal right now and most importantly the years of experienxe. I thought the offense did enough today, It’s the defense that let us down in my book.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:38 pm
How Jameis goes, so too does this team. 2 losses, 2 poor games for pedestrian-looking QB.
Nothing looks franchise to me. Drop the America thing. Sounds like you’re referring to the Cowboys.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:43 pm
yep…thanks Joe, and I’m out. No talk about the injured tackles, no talk about starting a RB we picked up off the street, no talk about only having 1 legitimate NFL WR….No, it’s Jameis’ fault.
Yep, call me when Ira writes something..or call me when you split.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:43 pm
On that 3rd INT to Shepherd I’m not sure why they ran a play with only 2 WR’s running routes. They both were double covered on that play.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:45 pm
When you play Brees in the dome, you usually have to score. Alot. No way did I expect the defense to shut down Brees twice in three weeks. Jameis has so much to work on this spring. And Licht has alot of moves to make.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:46 pm
The turnover battle is oh so critical. Odd if if the Bucs had the one originally called and Jameis has not thrown one the picks, could be difference. But alas. But those of you saying Jameis sucks should have your head examined. He’s in his second year and on his way to 4,000 yards. He’s got some growing to do, and definitely needs to learn from this game again. As for Koetter. He’s doing fine except he needs to give up the play calling. Too many times he’s done dumb things that even a novice sees sitting from the sideline. This isn’t major stuff to change…it is tweaks. Those of you whining so much about Koetter and Jameis don’t get it.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:47 pm
can we swap saints draft with ours
sheldon rankins
michael thomas
vonn bell
we would have been in the playoffs this year and these guys are future pro bowlers and 10 year stud starters
we have toast vh3
no where spense
yippy a
like kobe said beginning of the year these 3 will not be in the league or starting in 3 years
we will give forrest licht for free
December 24th, 2016 at 8:49 pm
Next season
December 24th, 2016 at 8:49 pm
no way with two picks did the offense do enough.0 for 2 on deep passes hurt our
offensive momentum. Not sure why the first attempt wasn’t thrown on second down.No big deal if you get an incomplete,it still 3rd and two a very makeable down.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:50 pm
stfu kobe you don’t know nearly as much as you think you know. And pretty sure you love it when the Bucs lose because you get too much enjoyment from talking crap and about the team you’re supposedly a fan of.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:52 pm
Go back and read my previous comments. I called the outcome and how it would happen. Jameis would have lousy protection and Brees would dominate the Bucs. Bucs still do not have a consistent pass rush and the o line sans Marley and Phamphile, when playing guard, is hot garbage. Need a new Center and RT at the very least this offseason. Draft DL, OL and WR for JW.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:53 pm
Another game where Jameis shows that he is not a FRANCHISE QB. We need a smarter player in that position, sorry, he is dumb. More picks and bad throws again…over and over again. Please also stop with the Mike Davis is a great coach talk…really? Great defense today huh…we got torched. Here we go 3 losses in a row.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:55 pm
Jameis needs to improve but the team is not good enough to make a playoff run.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:56 pm
Jorge, who is Mike Davis?
December 24th, 2016 at 8:57 pm
Gimme a $&$&Inc break. HE’s 22 YEARS OLD. Waaaaaaayyy to early to say anything about J-miss not beating a franchise WB. Jesus. Calm the eff down.
December 24th, 2016 at 8:59 pm
J-miss. Heh. Has that been said before? So true if I do say so myself.
December 24th, 2016 at 9:00 pm
jason gump is not a real gm and he can not build a team. he is the casey philips of nfl gms.
he should move his desk from the gm office to the marketing dept
draft vh3 because he wears tampa logos on his shoes at the combines?
drafts yippy a because he is from jameis former college fsu?
cooking the licht way?
buy some nasty tasting licht ale?
ooooh how cute. he is a salesman not a gm
he is the white george foreman
December 24th, 2016 at 9:00 pm
but at least we will no worse 8and 8 and quite possibly 9-7.
December 24th, 2016 at 9:06 pm
Am I the only one who thinks the team as a whole (who had a good playoff shot) seemed like they wanted it less than the team already ruled out?
December 24th, 2016 at 9:06 pm
Didn’t see many of those pure effort plays today
December 24th, 2016 at 9:11 pm
Please stop blaming jameis jameis and drew breeze number are the same we can’t keep no one healthy jameis kept us in the game our defense couldn’t get us the ball back with the game on the line
December 24th, 2016 at 9:11 pm
Lot of hate for a guy who should be a rookie next season but already has 50TDs and over 8000 yards under his belt. He’s not ready to put the team on his back for a playoff run (and the team is not there yet either) but no 22 year old QB in the league that I can recall has been. These are the developmental years for JW and he’s well ahead of schedule. Patience, patience, patience. Oh, and get he man some blocking and extra weapons.
December 24th, 2016 at 9:15 pm
That ^
December 24th, 2016 at 9:19 pm
I’ll take a 2nd year Jameis Winston over a 2nd year Drew Brees any day. A lot of you may not but I remember the San Diego days.
December 24th, 2016 at 9:28 pm
Where does Dirk come into this conversations?
December 24th, 2016 at 9:28 pm
The bottom line is that Winston is just not an accurate passer. I love everything else about him. But his total lack of accuracy will be what keeps him from leading this team to any championships. Just calling it as I see it. He never connects on long passes. Everytime he throws longer than 30 or 40 yards, it is a given that it will be overthrown. Then on the short routes he tries to get our reveivers ribs broken with is high passes. I do not think that he can learn or mature into being an accurate QB. We are stuck with what we have.
December 24th, 2016 at 9:35 pm
It seemed like we had no running game. I hope we draft a new RB.
December 24th, 2016 at 9:51 pm
Winston is the type of player I would dream of having in my team. Winston uplifted this mediocre team into playoff team. Atractive to FA. McCoy might have 5 pro bowl but he has never accomplished what Winston has done/for this team
December 24th, 2016 at 9:56 pm
@ rayjay1122
You said it perfectly……Jameis die alota great things……..but accuracy isn’t one of them
He hasn’t corrected his high ball throws. ….and then God forbids if he goes deep……deep balls suck for Jameis
So Bucs fans…..this is our QB
an Over Exicited, High Baller, Deep Sucks QB………..
December 24th, 2016 at 10:00 pm
This loss seems similar to the last loss at Dallas. Ugly
December 24th, 2016 at 10:20 pm
If Jameis could finish out the season strong against Carolina next week it would at least ease the mind of some of the disbelievers out there for the offseason…….if not, this “J – Miss” thing could get infectious!
December 24th, 2016 at 10:38 pm
America’s quarterback??? I love you Joe but in 3 more seasons Jameis will be hanging with Josh Freeman. Franchise that. Call it not stepping up, not answering the bell on the big stage, or just plain battle wore. He’s an awesome guy but not OUR salvation. Time will prove this. Surround him with all the talent you want. The NFL calls for accuracy, a good long ball and stepping up in times of need. Dirk will be gone too. It’s the Buc’s life
December 24th, 2016 at 10:39 pm
I started to just not even read this mess becayse I didn’t want to endure the trashing of Jameis.
Weird though Brees had how many interceptions and points the last time they played the Bucs?
And I think they gained valuable players, while offense lost 3+.
I am not going to entertain this 8-8 is an improvement, whatever…
Blame Jameis and build Kwon up to drop him later…
December 24th, 2016 at 10:42 pm
Sorry, typo, I meant Mike Smith.
December 24th, 2016 at 10:47 pm
I agree Bucs Ace!
A lot of people here must not know football very well when they make comments like Jameis sucks, Jameis won’t win us championships.
He is a 22 year old.kid with tremendous energy. Once he learns to control his excitement and learns to play within the game he will be a fantastic QB.
Jameis due to his high energy has the tendency to throw deeper then necessary to.his wide outs. Once he calms it down you will see his accuracy improve.
Also, someone needs to talk with Jameis about having him scramble some. Last year he scrambled alot compared to this year and especially the past 8 games or so.
I can’t count how many times I have seen Jameis throw for an in completion or whatever and he only had to put his head down and get the yardage easily.
Or he could have gotten alot more then that.
December 24th, 2016 at 10:48 pm
Man you guys are a bunch of negative naysayers. Do you think with this collection of offensive players that without Winston we would have won 8 games your dreaming. His passes don’t always find the mark, but a lot of it has to do with protection, and lack of talent at receiver. A good running game makes all QBs look good, just ask Zac Prescott. So i know everybody is down on Winston but as far as im concerned he’s far exceeded a 2nd year 22 year old QBs ability to run a nfl team.
December 24th, 2016 at 10:59 pm
Does anyone remember the PRO BOWL last year Jameis was firing shots all across the field, oh but wait…he had RECEIVERS…duuuh!!!
REAL knows REAL and this fan base is UNREAL 8 for 8, without a running game and 1 receiver and 1 TE…
Oh, wait…basically his whole offense was handicapped and we , were still in it. And defense did not stop DREW Brees!
It is so easy to play from the comfort of your own mind!
December 24th, 2016 at 11:03 pm
Just compare Jameis stats to Brees fo the game and I think most fans would be impressed except for one thing: 2 INTs. Jameis was 23-of-35 for 277 yds with 2 TDs. Brees was 23-of-34 for 299 yds … almost the same. Bucs got 23 1st downs; Saints got 25 … again, about the same. Bucs had 58 plays (28:24 TOP) while the Saints had 67 plays (31:36 TOP) … difference coming as result of the 2 INTs I would guess. Saints rushed more (31 runs for 123 yds) to 21 runs for 89 yds for the Bucs … but the average per rush is close to the same. Penaltis were the same (7) for both teams. Losing the turnover battle cost us, plain simple. But my impression was that although Jameis does tend to be inaccurate at times, its more about the play-calling, the lack of weapons, and excessive pressure at times. Jameis had TWO (2) years of college ball before coming to the Bucs, and is now finishing up his 2nd year here. 22 years old folks. Most of the players wholl be drafted this year will be just getting out of college at that age. He`s building experience and hopefully were getting him better protection and mre weapons to work with. We`re making progress. The sky really isn`t falling … yet.
December 24th, 2016 at 11:08 pm
Cue the Jameis apologists excuses
Not sure how you can defend the inaccuracy and 22 turnovers. Yes he made a state school relevant again. But as a pro he is wildly inconsistent. Off season priority has to be to fix Winston and upgrade the talent on offense
December 24th, 2016 at 11:48 pm
BCoburn you def are not the only one that thought that. It looked like the Bucs did not WANT to go to the playoffs. They would rather go home early. Now all we have is a meaningless game next week. Let’s see how many show up. Not many I bet.
December 24th, 2016 at 11:54 pm
Josh Freeman after 2nd season= slam dunk franchise QB. Winston after 2nd season…….put it this way if he goes 25 TD and 20 Ints. He’ll be released after 2017.
December 25th, 2016 at 12:02 am
22 yo and learrns how to, has better protectionon and has more weapons or LEARNS HOW TO THROW A FUKIN FOOTBALL. There is not a QB in football right now. That throws a worse deep ball than Winston.
December 25th, 2016 at 12:37 am
@nole4jaboo- you can’t compare throws in the pro bowl to throws in the regular season. In the pro bowl they don’t game plan or even blitz
Dude has a lot to improve upon to be anything other than an average qb
December 25th, 2016 at 12:47 am
Jameis did not play well, but come on now. Look who he had to play with. With Brate out, winston had to turn to brandon myers! This offense can not reach it’s full potential when we have receivers on the field who should not be in the NFL running routes.
Yes, winston must do better when adversity strikes and he still must make plays with whoever is on the field, i will hold Winston accountable for his role in this. I just can’t look past who the QB is throwing to. Tom Brady might be able to win some games with some bum WRs, but winston is no where near that caliber of QB. We must surround our young QB with talent. He can not and should not be expected to carry any entire offense on his own talent alone. He needs a better o line, and he needs some more people to throw to. This offense is a mess. Licht needs to fix it.
December 25th, 2016 at 1:09 am
I will probably still be posting on this sight when Jameis make the haters
eat up all their negative crap!
I truly don’ t believe you are a Bucs fan or are you just a Jameis hater
Sad for you, but Jameis is the franchise QB whether you like it or not!
Thank you DEFENSERULES🤗
December 25th, 2016 at 1:19 am
Shoot Jameis should just play all 22 positions, he is going to get blamed for everything anyway!
Is this about the playoff?
, I think that was your expectations some of us fans just wanted an improvement and we got it!
GO BUCS!!!
December 25th, 2016 at 3:38 pm
*************************
JAMEIS WINSTON has a HIGHER CAREER COMPLETION PERCENTAGE than:
JOHN ELWAY
DAN MARINO
ELI MANNING
THINK ABOUT THAT! The kid is still just 22 years old, was thrown to the dogs as a 21 year old rookie and asked to be the Savior rather than a “game manager” ala Roethlisberger, Dak, etc., and hasn’t even approached his “prime” which is still probably 6 years away and yet he already has a higher career completion percentage as a true gunslinger than the above three first ballot HOF’ers who just happened to combine to win EIGHT Conference Titles and FOUR SuperBowls!
*************************
If I was starting a team right now to compete for the next 15 years, I would take Jameiis with the #1 overall pick and not think twice.
December 25th, 2016 at 4:16 pm
BTW, I just checked and Jameis’ completion percentage is higher this year, in a year when his line has been horrible and his receivers injured, than Aaron Rodgers was last year in a year that A-Rod threw 31 TD’s and just 8 picks.
READ THE ABOVE AGAIN … it is mind-blowing and PROOF that no one should be ripping on Jameis’ accuracy … should he work on it, sure, but it’s BETTER this year that Rodgers was last year which is astounding!
December 26th, 2016 at 12:17 pm
NFLNut, it’s no mystery why some of these guys bash Jamies. Would they’ve run Elway, Brees, Manning, or Favre out of town after their first two years? I don’t think so. Check out their first two seasons starting. Jameis far exceeds them. But, you know…..
December 26th, 2016 at 2:09 pm
Gilhealy … I thin you’re right. These Jameis bashers seem to be to be the same type of people who would have never given Warren Moon a shot to play QB, who would root for Cam Newton to get injured and Derek Anderson to replace him if they Panthers fans … you know, just plain racists … sad.
December 26th, 2016 at 8:14 pm
Some of you guys post such over the top negativity it’s hilarious. An entire season sucks because of one play.
We started the 2nd half with a chance to grab momentum and were in the game.
Then the bonehead of bonehead plays….#3 compounds it with the stupid int and the D gives up a TD before the 2nd half was really underway.
That was a huge momentum changer on the road against a peoed Drew Brees.
And so riddle me this. How many games does an NFL team think they can win on the road against a division rival if they start the second half trailing by just 6 one score and get to receive the kick.
The game was lost on the play that totally turned the game around to start the half
Were there other shortcomings…absolutely…but again the Bucs basically were out of the game with one play to start the second half. It’s the NFL you simply cannot give a team with a talent like Brees a free seven to start the second half in their stadium.
December 27th, 2016 at 12:48 am
BTW … did anyone WATCH the Cowboys v Lions game tonight?
Lions season was on the line (if they won, they were in the playoffs as the #6 seed at worst … now if they lose next week and the Skins win, they are out) and MP candidate Matt Stafford was quarterbacking them … AND THEY GOT MURDERED and Stafford looked HORRIBLE!
Matt Stafford was an MVP candidate until just a couple hours ago and he’s a veteran and he played far, far worse than Jameis, as a 22 year old pup, played against those same Cowboys the week before … and the Bucs as a team played a whole lot better than the Lions did … who could still make the playoffs if they either beat the Packers or if the Skins lose to the Giants.
So … to all you fake fans, Jameis bashers and the like … wise up. The Bucs are a team on the rise, better than the Lions (who may make the playoffs over them this year) and I’d take our QB for the next 10+ years over Stafford 100% of the time and that’s saying a lot!
December 27th, 2016 at 12:50 am
BTW … does anyone here watch Steelers games? I do and Jameis reminds me sooooo much of Ben Roethlisberger it isn’t even funny … and Ben is a future first ballot HOF’er, 3-time AFC champ and has 2 rings.
Last night Ben looked like a carbon copy of Jameis … but with better receivers.
To me Jameis floor is Big Ben and his ceiling is that he will be a Roethlisberger/Peyton Manning combo and one of the greatest QB’s to ever play the game by the time he retires.
