Cherilus Was Hurt
December 19th, 2016Updated: 4:58 p.m.: Perhaps it was broken pride, but that’s just Joe typing.
Dirk Koetter says Gosder Cherilus was, in fact, injured.
After not sleeping last night and re-watching the Bucs game, Joe finally caught up on various postgame audio. On the Buccaneers Radio Network, Koetter said turnstile/fire hydrant right tackle Cherilus was hurt when the Bucs needed him most.
“We were having some pressure issues. Gosder Cherilus suffered a little bit of an injury there early in the fourth quarter. He tried to gut it out but we were getting some pressure,” Koetter said.
Yes, Cherilus was bad last week and before this fourth-quarter injury, but Joe would be out of line to not share Koetter’s mention. Joe hasn’t seen a Cherilus injury reported anywhere else.
No excuses, but a little perspective on why the Bucs turned to Division-II undrafted rookie Leonard Wester out of Missouri Western late in the fourth quarter.
UPDATE: Koetter says in his media conference call that the Cherilus injury is a groin.

Let wester play

Yea what his excuse for the previous 7 quarters?
December 19th, 2016 at 12:44 pm
Injury is a valid excuse only when it pertains to Gerald.

Gosder wasn’t great at any point in the game, but there was a huge drop off in the fourth quarter. He was straight up man handled for 6 straight plays. An injury could explain that. But im not convinced that even a healthy gosder could have stopped Irving. Both because Gosder sucks, and Irving is a damn good pass rusher.

Earth to the rest of the Bucs planet whatever.

I hate to say it but I think you move Pamphile to RT and bring Evan Smith in at LG.
December 19th, 2016 at 1:40 pm
Whether or not he was hurt, he pretty much single handedly blew up our offense for 3 series straight before getting taken out in the middle of the 4th series. He should have been taken out sooner, ESPECIALLY if he was hurt. But I don’t believe that. I think he’s too old to finish out games.

Him playing hurt, Hurt us!
December 19th, 2016 at 1:45 pm
Hurt or not, he put out some humiliating film for the league to watch. I actually feel bad for him, he played so poorly.

This gif pretty much sums up the O-line as a whole last night. Not just Cherilus. But he got pretty friggen wrecked too.

You might be onto something.

YEAH THAT PLAY WAS BRUTAL
December 19th, 2016 at 2:48 pm
Gosder Cherilus is finished as an NFL level player, starter or backup
December 19th, 2016 at 2:55 pm
Gosh Your Sureless.

Having Irving’s foot up his backside must qualify as an injury.
December 19th, 2016 at 4:31 pm
When playing injured hurts the team more than not playing it’s time to come out. Next man up.
December 19th, 2016 at 4:48 pm
I believe that. He’s never been that bad before. He’s been a solid backup but he looked downright immobile suddenly.
December 19th, 2016 at 6:17 pm
Wes, that gif certainly shows that it wasnt just gosder struggling. All 4 d lineman had a meeting at the QB. None of our o lineman held a block. Ali marpet is seen flying across the screen as he got man handled too. D Smith is getting plowed back as usual right into jameis’ back, and hawley is spinning around trying to figure out the DT went. Pathetic display of blocking.
But im sure the one joe will continue to claim the o line is the best ever and it is all winston and Martin’s fault for the break down.
December 19th, 2016 at 6:26 pm
Leave it up to the national media to hype a 6 point win at home. Should we just crown them champions now or later? Yes, I am a sore loser!

I duno much about O-line but I think we really just need 2 more pieces and we’ll be OK.
RT is easily #1 need on that line though. I think we can all agree on that.
I’m not as worried about the interior of the line although we need to get better at C.
I like our guards for the long term between Pamphile, Marpet, Benecoch, and Gottschalk. Gottschalk played well before getting hurt
December 19th, 2016 at 6:54 pm
@Lord-
Gottschalk did play well, in fact I would like to see more of him and see if he can really hold his own as center. That could eliminate 1 need. Also interested to see if Marpet would slide over to C or not. Maybe Evan Smith sticks around as a backup, but he is not starter material.
Tackle is definitely the biggest need though. Either upgrade the RT, or get a premier LT and move D. Smith over to the right side. Keep Dotson around as a backup, plus Benenoch being developed.
Cherilus looked like a little boy out there against men.

Lookayear, Cherilus is done. Stick a fork in;em!! His best yrs are far behind him. Give him a barbeque grill and put him out to pasture. Next year, Lets bring some country beef up in here who wants to hit and block, I was as you were too …very impressed with the cowboys linemen on O and D.
December 19th, 2016 at 9:49 pm
Shouldn’t we spend some money on better OL ?? God they are bad.

Irving was plucked off someones practice squad Good Job Jason L
December 20th, 2016 at 12:13 am
Cameron Jordan made Cherilus look bad last week. Jordan is a good ball player. David Irving going into this game, had 10 tackles and one sack in 12 games. THAT is what Cherilus couldn’t block. I’ll debate the Joe’s any time any wear that this offensive line has underperformed this year.

I guess calling it a groin injury is the professional coach speak way of saying he got kicked in the nuts.
