Angry With Mike Evans

November 15th, 2016
Has pointed takes on Mike Evans.

Has pointed takes on Mike Evans.

The moment he decided to sit out the National Anthem on Veterans Day Weekend to protest democracy at work, Bucs stud wideout Mike Evans had to know he was setting himself up for loads of grief that may never be undone.

“The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620, provided plenty of it.

The Dean of Tampa Bay sports radio wasted little time in unloading on Evans yesterday. Duemig believes Evans’ decision was a selfish stunt, putting himself not only above the team but inviting disharmony and friction in the locker room, just when it appears the team may have turned a corner after a convincing win over the Bears.

You can hear Duemig’s monologue in full below, audio courtesy of Joe’s good friends at WDAE-AM 620.

As for Evans, Joe was somewhat sympathetic to his point of view. He has every right to voice it. But Joe cannot get past the timing of Evans’ protest and is hoping he simply didn’t fully appreciate or understand the ramifications of the time and place.

After learning Evans wrote on Instagram that he didn’t vote in last week’s presidential election, the very bedrock of our nation, his “protest” has zero substance in Joe’s eyes and is nothing more than a misguided stunt. If Evans really thought Donald Trump was so vile, why didn’t he do the easiest thing in the world to try to prevent his election and vote for someone, anyone, but Trump? Instead Evans chose to watch from the sidelines, and now he is upset with the result and disrupting the Bucs? Sorry, doesn’t fly for Joe. Pretty weaksauce, actually.

Joe will just quote Peter King of NBC Sports and theMMQB.com from yesterday, himself a strident supporter of Hillary Clinton.

I don’t want to hear you bitching about Trump if you’re 18 or older and didn’t vote. You had a chance to be heard. You didn’t use that chance. If, like Kaepernick, you want to protest social injustice, fine. But I’m not listening to a word you say about Trump if you didn’t vote.

[CAUTION: Joe welcomes spirited debate and robust discussion. You are more than welcome if not encouraged to critique WDAE-AM 620 on-air personalities if you so choose. However, if you have to resort to name-calling, if you have to use a derogatory adjective before a person’s name, if your grandmother would wince the way you describe an on-air personality, Joe promises: You. Will. Be. Banned. There will be no exceptions. Do not test Joe on this. So if any WDAE-AM 620 on-air personality enrages you or angers you in such a way you cannot control yourself, just understand Joe has provided ample warning. If you must go there, tread carefully. You are welcome. — Joe]

Keep playing ball like you have this year and you can sleep during the anthem for all I care

  2. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Personally tho, I agree with his opinion, but not his action.

HOWEVER, he is not me and I dont give a rats ass what he does and neither should you.

You guys are about as dogmatic and “force people to live the way you expect them to” as most Christians are,

    Get off your high horses.

When you acheived enlightenment and became the perfect human then come back here and start talking crap abt Evans

  3. Tampa Tony Says:

Why do we villainize anyone who does something that is unpopular? Abolishing salvery and the civil rights movement weren’t popular at the time either.

Shocked that a 620am personality is so easily offended by what random internet posters say. Thank god for the Bucs podcast on this site or I’d have nothing to listen to

  4. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

agreed with overall message of big dog but him advocating violence against mike evans was way over the top, he is 23 and will grow and make more mature educated choices as he grows and educates him more on the US and also the candidates he did not vote for, as of now he is just an ignorant snowflake who is crying over an election that ultimately will not impact him except maybe pay less taxes and he did not take place in it, so in 2 or 4 years go out and vote and sit on the bench or take a knee if he decides

  5. Clint Says:

Meh, King is wrong. Not voting is better than voting Killary

  6. Avejoe Says:

I agree with Mike, but honestly if you didn’t vote, then you don’t get to bitch about the outcome.

  7. mark2001 Says:

Since you talked about “selfishness” Steve, wasn’t your drunk driving a pretty selfish act as well? Not throwing stones from my glass house, but maybe you shouldn’t either.

  8. Pittbucfan Says:

Another misguided 20-something. That’s all. God I’ve seen a ton of them on the news out protesting and most don’t have a clue why they are protesting. Mike, in my opinion, is in the same category. Except hes is quite talented and plays for our Bucs. Just a case of too many sheep guided by a biased media. It’ll all be ok.

  9. mark2001 Says:

Joe…agree that if you don’t vote, you have little room to criticize. I think he had every right to do what he did, but if he talks about the problems that will be coming because Trump was elected and he didn’t vote, he put the cart before the horse and dilutes his message, as we used to say in Rural Illinois.

  10. Clodhopper Says:

Turned the corner after a bears win? We haven’t turned a corner in 6 years!!

  11. James Walker Says:

Evans may be a hypocrite, but he still has the right to not vote, not stand, and the constitutional right to be a d-bag.

  12. Clodhopper Says:

I LOVE watching lefties complain about people being offended. From that side that offended by EVERYTHING. I think you’re so easily offended, you’re offended by people being offended. Bunch of hypocritical babies screaming for a beanky and a bottle. You people get offended by pronouns but spitting on the military is no biggie? You don’t even realize that very thing is why trump won.

  13. lightningbuc Says:

The “he has a right to do it” crap is getting old. No one is claiming he broke the law. We have a lot of rights. I have the “right” to call your wife horrible, vile things, but it doesn’t mean I should. Just because you have a right doesn’t make it right. It’s called human decency.

  14. DallasBuc Says:

More over the top outrage by the whiny little btchs with all their delicate sensibilities. If you don’t want to protest Trump by sitting out the British, I mean American, national anthem then don’t. Why is the civil action of a single individual who decides to express his opinion in a manor that in no way deprives another of any of their own rights considered so offensive? Get over yourselves and your weak minded opinions.
I support Mike Evans. I support his right to express his opinions openly and I support his courage to speak out in the face of certain backlash.

  15. JMN Says:

@Clint If he was so discontent with Trump, I mean enough to disrespect the national anthem, the least he should have done was go out and vote for Hillary. Voting is the least selfish way to protest a candidate and he didn’t even do that! I do like Evans, but I feel he didn’t think this one out and is just a misguided millennial that bought into the media propaganda against Trump.

  16. Eric Says:

So Big Dawg Mad So What!!!!

People need to make a decision do u want ur rights protected or trampled on!!!! Anyone who says I’m not supporting the team blah blah blah was probably not going to the games anyway!! Go Bucs and Mike Evans this is what living in the Greatest Country on Earth is all about going against the grain grt a lot of people bitching but it don’t cost you ur freedom or your life!! USA!!

  17. Chucklehead & The Slumpbusters Says:

Just a bunch of the standard fallout. I dont agree with him either, but nothing I can do about it besides bitch, so I move on.

Have a 2 td, 150 yard game this week and the noise wont be so loud.

Kaps problem is that he surprised everyone with his stunt (not related but also ineffective) and when he got his chance, he played like raw sewage.

By the way, I always kind of thought that Kap did this knowing that the front office wouldnt fire a guy due to his production with a huge social issue like this hanging over the organization.

  18. K_bassuka Says:

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Evans or any citizen of this great nation from excersicing their 1st ammendment right, anyone that has an issue with a citizen speaking their minds should go to a communist country I’m e you will live happily there. Saying “you didn’t vote, you shouldn’t complain about the result” it’s even wort I mean last I checked voting it’s optional. I’m sure many Americans didn’t vote for work, medical, or other reasons, aren’t they allow to express their worries?

Last but not least, how about stop using veterans as the basis of your argument. Not all of us veterans have the same views as you and do not need you to come to save us.

  19. tmaxcon Says:

If you don’t bother to take the time to vote you give up the right for your opinion to be taken seriously. Voting is a privilege and responsibility not a chore.

  20. mark2001 Says:

JM…thanks for the morning humor. You know NOTHING about Trump other than what the “biased media” has told you, though you think the media that helped build our great nation is biased and choose to believe your journalistic lightweights and some fly by night hacks. And you talk about “media propaganda”? LOL.

  21. JMN Says:

@ mark2001….Not sure what you are laughing at? This entire election I believed the main stream media was completely against Trump. I was just stating that Evans bought into it.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How can he be so passionate about his feelings about Trump and not vote against him?
    43% of eligible voters didn’t vote so Evans & Kaepernick aren’t alone….
To me, that group of people are the ones t hat disrespect our Vets who fought and died to preserve the right.
Mike is simply still immature….you just can’t give some very young people millions of dollars and expect them to act wisely.
You don’t see any players on the bubble sitting during the anthem only the multi-millionaires.

  23. Figures Says:

If the glazers tell him he better stand then he should do what he’s told. How many of us can show up at work and clock in and then use company time for some protest we want? So tired of hearing “it’s his right”.

Not when it’s on company time.

How bout you supporters show up at work and start talking about “it’s my right” and see if you don’t get fired.

Do what you want outside of work but when you clock in you do what you’re paid to do and that’s it.

  24. 911bucs Says:

    Lightning,
I happen to agree with you on this, you can preach all you want wheather it’s someone’s right to sit during the national anthem or have their freedom of speech, that’s great and all but at some point it goes back to positive ethics and morals of an individual. Look at the 49ers vs cards game kapernick was booed by the majority of the stadium when he went in the game. I think people are fed up with guys disrespect. Why aren’t people pissed at the current POTUS for oppression and civil injustice, instead of a guy that’s not even in office yet?

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Evans not voting invalidates his protest. I was fine with it until I learned he didn’t even vote.

  26. Mitch Says:

I disagree with the attitude that most are taking towards athletes who are exercising their right to express themselves in a non-violent protest. These demonstrations are being treated with similar attitudes that the civil rights leaders went through 45 years ago. It is crazy how easy we the people forget our own history. I was too young. However does anyone remember when the director of the FBI called Dr. Martin Luther King the biggest liar in the world? That was front page news back then. In context to today’s world this is essentially history repeating itself. I believe These actions are necessary because of the national stage football players perform on. In reality, however, kneeling during the anthem is nothing but one symptom of a much bigger infection in our beloved country.

  27. DallasBuc Says:

Figures- it would never stand up as constitutional for a private business to force it’s employees to stand for the national anthem or any other song unless they were hired to stand during songs. Let’s not start making stuff up so you can justify lecturing others on how they choose to express their patriotism. That is a slippery slope.

  28. Bucsfanman Says:

His and Kap’s protest ring hollow. You have no voice if you don’t vote. It really is that simple.
I’m disappointed but I’m not going to crucify the guy for it.
To the 43% who didn’t vote:
You cannot have a voice if you do not vote. In our system, it is one of the few ways that we are active participants. VOTE! If you don’t, keep your mouth shut!!!

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Here’s the deal…he does have the right to protest. Standing up is how things change. Refusing to sit in the back of a bus lead to change.

This protest accomplishes nothing. It’s not even original. However, I was fine with Evans protesting the results of the election, assuming he himself cast a vote.

The fact that he did not vote puts a nail in that coffin so far as I am concerned. What he SHOULD be doing is making public statements about how he didn’t vote and his lack of voting made a difference in a negative way.

Either way though, he has a right to protest. That doesn’t mean there will not be consequences from doing it.

  30. Bryan Says:

Have not listened to Big Dog in years. My least favorite host on 620 by far. This is a man who constantly feigns outrage. He is Tampa’s own white Stephen A. Yet one more reason to turn him off. All other 620 shows are worth listening to, I just cannot stomach the man.

  31. Brandon Says:

Just like I predicted, he didn’t even vote.

    I agree, and I’m a political socialist/activist, @clodhopper. I bet I’ve been a devoted Bucs fan longer than you! 🙂

  33. Bucsfanman Says:

@Bonzai- You’re right, he still has the right to protest. In THIS context, however, it means absolutely NOTHING!
C’mon Mike! Get in the game baby!

  34. Serge Says:

If Mike was an undrafted back up rookie bringing controversy to a work place effecting his coworkers and employers profits he would have been released, but because he is a super star he gets away with it. Simple as that.

  35. Clodhopper Says:

    ORL

I bet my turds smell better than yours. So what. Who cares? Whats your point?

  36. Jack Airey Says:

Mike Evans going to his knee for any reason during the national anthem is disrespecting our country and his team mates. From my perspective as an Army veteran he has committed an act of treason. Buc’s management needs to deal with this embarrassment to their franchise sooner than later.

  37. Rrsrq Says:

So Trump now chief advisor is a Steve Bannon (the voice of racism) and you all still mad at Mike Evans. Really, so what are the real issues when we esteem a flag over decency.

  38. Serge Says:

Koetter hinted during his press conference how Winston feels about veterans while standing next to him during national anthem. I wonder if Evans lack of targets was really him being double covered or Winston’s progressions started with Brate as a number 1.

  39. 1gr8Bucfan Says:

As a veteran myself (22 years U.S. Air Force) I don’t have a problem with what ME did. He has that right, and I served and made sacrifices so that he could have that right. To me it’s about responsibilities. If you want to effect change then it is your responsibility to cast your vote and let your voice be heard.

  40. Eric Says:

Jack Airey thanks for you Service Sir I really mean that but Treason Sir he has the right sir what he did was not illegal!!

  41. DallasBuc Says:

Jack Airey- thank you for your service to this country. With all due respect you do not know what you are talking about. Treason is a serious crime, exercising your first amendment right to freely express your opinions is perhaps the most patriotic thing you can can do as a citizen of this already great country. Afterall, it was the first of all declared rights in the bill of rights of our constitution. That is not a mistake.
Maybe you should take a minute to look up what treason means. What you are suggesting is the kind of thing that happens in Moscow, Pyongyang, Tehran & Islamabad, not Tampa Bay. Get a grip and thanks again for your service.

  42. Eric Says:

1gr8bucfan thanks for Service as well Sir!!!

  43. BKNYfootballhead Says:

Every protest somehow is the equivalent of “spitting” or “pi$$ing” on soldiers? Please, such a tired sensational argument. Veterans aplenty disagree, and comment regularly on this website.
At least Big Dog will call ME13 an “idiot”, unlike Joe who will only call him a “good guy” and be “sympathetic” to his protest. Yet, Joe had plenty beef with Kaepernick, enough to assault his character on numerous occasions. Why such a discrepancy? Are you afraid you’ll lose your locker room interviews with ME13 for being a clear peddler of Trump support, Joe? You sure seem to have a hard spot and open distaste for dissent for all, but you sure make patty cake with Evans’ protest.

  45. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Get ready for the Evans / Dotson bout! Round 1, ding ding ding!

  46. BKNYfootballhead Says:

    Jack Airey calling sitting treason?

I feel terrible for all the stadium staff and network operators preoccupied with their jobs and unable to stand attention. God forbid someone needs to take a dump before kickoff.

  47. Chris Says:

The one thing I will say, and mainstream media doesn’t form my opinion is I could not consciously vote for a man that mocks a person with a disability. As a father of someone disabled , it was an outright slap in my face and my sons. Furthermore, I don’t really give a spit of any of you Billy bad arses mock me for it. He won, I won’t protest , but I won’t like him either and I have zero respect for the guy. Oh and I was on Evans side, but like a lot of the other lazy, wins millienials, he didn’t vote, so his protest is moot.

  48. Chris Says:

    Winy not wins

  49. Chris Says:

    Whiny , yeesh

  50. Aubpierce Says:

I hope Mike is ready to face the consequences. Like many 20 year old’s today they have been influenced by liberal professors and never here the other sides views. When I was in college we heard the rest of the story from Paul Harvey.

  51. BuccaneEric75 Says:

orlbucfan, you’re a socialist? Stalin would be proud.

  52. Kobe Faker Says:

Kobe is forward thing and a visionary while most here only think about now and the present

    Damn this regurgitation is boring

If we are going to talk about me13, lets converse about whats going to happen to him and the bucs in this near future

Me13 said he will sit for the next 4 years of trumps presidency. If that is his stance, the glazers must trade him. They will lose bucsfan, militaru and corporate support.

Evans has 2 more years till max contract. We should trade him this offseason for value

    Evans for dhop

Joes start a me13 trade possibilty thread

Glazers want evans out and they will lose tremendous support if they give evans a big contract

  53. Clodhopper Says:

    @Orl

“You wouldn’t know a true lefty socialist even if one of us bit you in your worthless behind.”

Well you’re right about one thing. You lefties are a bunch of ass chewers. Debating you is like playing chess with a pigeon.

  54. Rrsrq Says:

Not voting does not mean you don’t have the right to express your opinion. Unfortunately, certain groups in this country advocate voter suppression, voter apathy and even denial of the right to vote (ex-felons who have served their time), they all have the right to protest within the context of the law

  55. Greg Says:

News flash! The greatness of America is based on what we put into it not what we get out of it. Im so sorry this country has been so hard on Evans and Kapernick… yes that was sarcasm.

  56. Matthew Says:

61 year old man who never served his country but has the audacity to take offense for those who did; spare me. Tough talking radio host never had the intestinal fortitude to actually serve his country but has no problem lambasting another man’s right in a free society, is the epitome of cowardice.

I’ve posted this before, I don’t care about Mike Evans sitting, I’m a veteran, get over it. Regardless of his cause (I’d feel the same way if he was sitting if Hillary won) It literally harms none of you in any meaningful or tangible way. I served to protect a way of life, not a symbol, not a flag, not a anthem but a country that prides itself on allowing free thinking individuals to express themselves however they see fit as long as its not hurting one of their fellow citizens.

If Mike Evan’s quite act of sitting offends your precious sensibilities, maybe you can retreat to that “safe space” you love to chide other people about needing when they claim they are offended.

    Go Bucs. STM since 86

  57. Matthew Says:

    *quiet
    dang phone!

  58. DallasBuc Says:

    Well said Matthew

  59. ATrain Says:

What does the National Anthem have to do with TRUMP

If Evans doesn’t like the elections go match with the others ..

    Voice his opinion

Its about REPECTING a NATION that has fought for its FREEDOM.. IT cost a lot of LIVES for this FREEDOM

That is why it is WRONG for EVANS to kneel

  60. LakeLandBuc Says:

What is wrong with protesting a Sexual Predator, Tax Cheat, Draft Dodger, Womanizer, 4 Time Bankruptee, 2 Time Divorcee, Someone who mock the Handicap.

  61. martinii Says:

Many of us who served have diverse opinions regarding the actions of Evans. We must never forget the time tested axiom that states in effect, “I may not agree with what you say sir, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” To maintain the integrity of the First Ammendment we must all remember that all of our opinions and the right to express them are guaranteed. Also we must remember a non-voter is included in our First Amendment protections and is often as powerful expression as a vote. You do not lose your freedom of expression in this country if you don’t vote.

  62. D-Rome Says:

I thought Steve was spot on with his correlation between millennials and the “everyone gets a trophy” mindset. The harsh reality that many (not all) millennials are ill-equipped to deal with losing and not getting their way. I read that 10 percent of millennials voted. There are an estimated 70 million millennials. You guys do the math. That left (according to the statistics so far) an estimated 116,651,236 people out there to decide the election. The voting population is estimated to be 231,556,622 and 53.4% (186,651,236) of the people voted.

Out of the total voting population an estimated seven million millennials voted and you can be sure some voted for Trump, some voted for Gary Johnson, and some voted for Harambe.

In short, 90% of the millennials pretty much expected mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, and the older adults to decide the fate of the country for them. This is not so dissimilar to how many of them were raised. I don’t care if Mike Evans sits during the anthem but his reasoning is all wrong. Voting is the process this country uses to decide elections and it’s been that way for over 200 years. His protest has zero chance to change anything. There will not be a discussion started on the ways Trump can be prevented from taking the White House. He will be inaugurated on January 20, 2017 unless he dies.

For the record, I voted 3rd party.

  63. D-Rome Says:

Errr…umm….I mis-typed a few numbers up there with total voters in 2016 but my point is that a very small percentage of the millennial population bothered to vote.

  64. bucsfaninchina Says:

    Matthew ftw

  65. chargedcbh Says:

I am often amazed how people see things from only 1 point of view. I don’t like Trump, I don’t like Clinton, I personally think government will not work as long as there is billion of dollars running through it. This country has Freedom’s, the military fights on our behalf to maintain these freedom’s. It’s amazing that when someone exercises this freedom’s it is criticized. Or people say, that this isn’t the platform, he should’ve done it another way. You can’t tell someone how to express themselves. Yes I have family and friends that served, they have died for these Freedom’s. So I guess we have freedom as long as long as you do it a certain way. Freedom of speech but watch what you say!

  66. Rob W Says:

I am just very disappointed that Mike did note vote, and then did not stand. So sad to see one of our players acting like this.

  67. Bucsfanman Says:

    @martinii-
“You do not lose your freedom of expression in this country if you don’t vote”

No question. However, the protest has no real meaning if you didn’t exercise your right to vote in this instance considering it is against a presidential candidate. It rings hollow. I don’t take issue with it, it just doesn’t mean anything.

  68. Big HogHaynes Says:

I can’t keep telling people that you can’t tell this man what and how and when to do his thing, he didn’t vote that’s his choice, and Trump was not overwhelming voted into office, as a black man, my people have survived a lot of America’s BS, and still to this day you get an idiot like Duemig to try and tell another man what he should do…….slavery has been abolished so do you and keep your nose out of others lives! I had two older brothers that served in the armed forces both deployed around the world, neither one came home and told me that I should join the ARMED FORCES! Here we are Duemig talking about what it will do to a mediocre team and the disrespect of a flag and a National RACIST ANTHEM, when we try take away the rights of the people………we are headed for trouble as a NATION!

  69. BuccaneEric75 Says:

BigHog, just because the full song that the Anthem was taken from has a verse about slaves in it doesn’t make it racist, and the fact the that verse didn’t make it in the Anthem tells you all that you need to know. I detest the fact that there were ever slaves and serfs, but that’s the world we had. Slavery has been in effect since the dawn of man, all over the world. Most people today view it as a flaw in America. It was, but it was also a flaw across the whole world. That doesn’t make it right, but it doesn’t make it just about the U.S. It doesn’t tell the whole story of human history.

  70. MadMax Says:

Glad to be done with him. You dont see any Cowboys disrespecting the anthem.

  71. unbelievable Says:

Pretty funny that Joe says writing a derogatory word before someone’s name isn’t allowed, considering who he voted, for and the Internet drudge he links to daily as “news”… 😂😂

As for Evans, if you didn’t vote, you don’t get to b!tch about it. He did lose his whole base for his argument. Especially when you’re registered in states like Florida or Texas. He’s 23, he will learn.

  72. salish_seamonster Says:

I support Evans, I support free speech, and Drumpf is not my president and never will be.

  73. Pickgrin Says:

    Matthew Says:
“I served to protect a way of life, not a symbol, not a flag, not a anthem but a country that prides itself on allowing free thinking individuals to express themselves however they see fit as long as its not hurting one of their fellow citizens.”

    Nicely stated Matthew.

Viewing Evans’ seemingly misguided “protest” as a FU to military personnel is ridiculous. The guy above claiming ‘treason’ for not standing while the Star Spangled Banner is being performed just exemplifies the point of how ridiculous that mindframe can become – as do those who want Evans fired/released immediately.

  74. grafikdetail Says:

geesh! just stop whining about this crap and get back to football…

  75. Dlavid Says:

Big Dog is spot on !! You can not refuse to vote and ignore your most precious right to be heard and then sit in protest ! HYPOCRITE ! Grow up Evans ! Smarten up ! The racist card never goes out of style !

  76. "That guy" Says:

Dallasbu, it is also the business owners right to fire an employee he does not want working for him.

  77. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

As a professional Football player, you check your politics at the door. You don’t bring it to your workplace. You can do what you want in your personal and social life, but once you are in the locker room and the field, you leave your politics outside. Koetter needed to make this clear. No political protest of any kind should be allowed on the field. Disciplinary action for those who violate this. The team, locker room, and field are all part of their employment.

  78. IdahoBucsfan Says:

I believe what Mike did was a completely selfish and thoughtless act, but I am totally satisfied with his apology!
