Becht: More Blitzing, Please

A veteran of 12 NFL seasons as a bruising tight end, Anthony Becht of the Buccaneers Radio Network was asked to assess the state of the team today.
Speaking on WDAE-AM 620, Becht, said he likes what Dirk Koetter has delivered as a playcaller.
While Becht said he’s found himself yearning for more aggression, he said Koetter playing it more conservative at times is evidence of big-picture thinking and wearing a head-coaching hat with a depleted roster.
On the defensive side, Becht has a simple request for defensive coordinator Mike Smith: “more blitzing.”
Derek Carr was Exhibit A of a QB being too comfortable — too often — against the Bucs this season, Becht said. Against the Falcons, it was a Daryl Smith blitz that led to Gerald McCoy’s sack-strip.
Joe agrees with Becht. The Bucs invested heavily in man-coverage cornerbacks. Put them to the test with opposing quarterbacks under pressure more often. Joe suspects things might improve. Plus, without any kind of consistent four-man pass rush, the Bucs have little chance of winning games.

I absolutely agree with more blitzing. Given our challenges getting a rush from the DL it’s time to turn Smitty loose.
Let him have some fun designing the most exotic blitzes in the league. Think outside the box in terms of where and how many blitzers attack. We have nothing to lose it’s time to gamble. Rush six and even seven at times….take the chance we’ve got nothing left to lose and we might discover something thta will be useful next year even if we get a DL rush.

we are perfectly capable of giving up huge plays without blitzing. i see no added risk in sending a few more guys at the QB.

this team tackles but it doesn’t hit anyone. we live with the memories of Lynch, Brooks, Barber, Sapp, Rice, Quarles, hell Alstott bring the wood. This team has no lumberjacks.

Why for the love of pearl can’t we press at the line on D. If the corner gets beat at least the safety will know where to go. Damn actually run the 3-4 for a whole game. TRY everything coach!!!!!!!!!

Run defense
Great at stopping the run. Marginal in pass mode
Pass defense
Great at getting deflections n picks. Marginal in run mode

Agree with Joe on the points about letting our little guys playing a bit more man press freeing up LVD and Kwon to do their thing.
But apparently Becht missed where our safeties got burnt in pass coverage TWICE by a rookie TE running the seam. An all too common occurrence this year.

Agreed. This d line is terrible at getting even remotely close to any good/decent pocket passers. Daryl Smith blitz leading to GMC sack, strip. Jude-Adjei blitz on Kaepernick forcing fumble. The only way they can get some kind of pressure on the QB is by bringing the blitz and for some reason thats not happening.

in fairness to the defensive playcaller at One Buc Place, we have seen our elite LBs screwing up in coverage almost weekly and our safeties are, without exaggeration, among the league’s worst. With those 2 things in mind, it might be hard to convince yourself that a good QB can’t find his slot guy or TE even if your CBs lock down both WRs and your blitzer doesn’t get picked up

Off topic, but yeesh, I see why the ratings are down in the NFL. Only 12 of 32 teams are above .500 at the halfway mark. Mediocrity is rampant in the NFL.

Pick6 is right, they are giving up plays anyway, why not try and press the QB. We can move rotate josh robinson or verner to on of the safety sports to add better coverage skills. come on man, there has to be ways to scheme some blitz pressures!

I been saying this since last year we can’t blitz with our corner play. Lb’s can’t cover, D-line can’t rush. No defensive coach can win with this collective. Could McCoy play better with a better cast? Sure! Can David do the same? Yes! But I guarantee, neither of those guys will become a leader on a new team. These guys threw 2 coaching staffs under the bus and now people are starting to see it’s the players who suck.

The Bucs have none.
Lavonte David is barely average this season, and Kwon Alexander looks out of control when he’s not flailing around in the wrong run gap, getting blocked into the defensive backfield or confused in his passing assignments.
This defense is every bit as sorry as Lovie Smith’s was.
In fact, this team looks exactly like last years…with less offense and no running game to speak of…
I am very, very disappointed.

@Cobraboy I for one know that the LBs, S, CBs are not elite. However offenses seem to move the ball regardless. So why not amp up the the number of blitzes?
