“We Should Have Taken That Penalty”
November 4th, 2016After further review, Dirk Koetter has had an attitude change on his gift-giving ways.
Yes, Joe was alarmed big-time when Koetter declined a 15-yard penalty personal foul after an incompletion and opted to have Falcons kicker Matt Bryant boot a 41-yard field goal midway through the first half last night. If Koetter accepted the call, the Falcons would have had 3rd-and-22 from the Bucs’ 38 yard line.
It was a wacky decision by the head coach that appeared to be a no-confidence-in-my-defense move, and a terrible decision for a team trying to build a winning culture.
Koetter stood firmly behind his decision after the blowout loss, but this afternoon he changed his mind upon further review.
“That’s a bad decision by me,” Koetter said.
The head coach elaborated to say the decision was no reflection of his trust in the defense, just the wrong decision.

i appreciate his candor that being said we are seeing bad in game decisions weekly it seems. my confidence is starting to weaken in Dirk and I am about done with Licht… This WR RB fiasco could have and should have been prevented. No way they should have gambled on both vjax and martin staying healthy just stupid, stupid moves.

Admittedly…that defense scares me too. Bad decision in theory…but he no doubt pictured 7 vs 3 was the better part of valor.

Wait…flip that 🙂

Can we let the coach learn how to be a head coach in the NFL? After all, it’s a lot different when all the decisions are yours and not someone else’s. You can take risks when your job is not on the line. That’s not the position he is in and so I would expect some conservative decisions as well. Give him time to learn to be the head coach. Everyone seems to want perfection NOW! Not going to happen.

If the answer was totally honest, I think he was still mad that the Center got blown up on the QB sneak and JW3 fumbled on 3rd down!!! Then just saw the Defense getting gassed and said just take the field goal and get the offense back out to rest the D and get back some of the time of possession!!!!
November 4th, 2016 at 5:32 pm
He did not take the penalty because we really never had them face 4th downs. The Falcons could make huge plays seemingly at will because Matty Ice had all day in the pocket and our DB’s are not on the same level as the Falcon WR’s. 3 points were better to give up than a very likely 7 if we give their offense another down. So, considering the mismatch between their offense and our defense, it was the smart choice. Sad but true.

How about the fact you’re stupidly didn’t use your timeouts before halftime and tried to force a blocked punt? Like I get not throwing the ball with 15 seconds left in the half, going to halftime – but why in the world wouldn’t you want to force them to punt and go for the block or a big return? That’s just pure cowardness.
November 4th, 2016 at 5:36 pm
was no reflection of his trust in the defense,
—————
I for one was thinking the same thing. I’m positive I was not alone. We didn’t have 1 punt all game. Zero, cinch, sziltch. 3rd&22 would have been no different.
November 4th, 2016 at 5:41 pm
Derek Carr picked up a 3&17 with his legs. HIS LEGS!!!! W in the actual F.

It seems like he isnt getting or wanting anybodys help. Where is the oc monken and others he is talking to
Koetter cant make decisions and adjustments on the fly
The most important part of koetters inconsistant decision making is the fevelopment and coaching of jameis winston
Can you actually believe he is not also wavering and teaching indecision cconcerning jameis development
The guy repeatedly says headscratching statements andthen admits it was incorrect…now when it comes to jameis development, koetter is everything correct
There are few games recently that it wasnt the same jameis of the last 4 years. Hesitation, indecision, double clutching, and the arm motion isnt smooth
As you guys know i dont like koetter as a coach. He NEVER had succes developing a young qb. Matt ryan was already a proven player at atl and the only chamce he had to develop a young qb was the failed gabbert in Jacksonville
We need another offensive coordinator with many years in experience next to help jameis

Speaking of penalties, I think that Kevin Pamphile was the only Buc O-Lineman not to be penalized. Is that correct? There was an earlier article about “swagger” among the O-Line. If by “swagger” you mean a flagrant disregard for the consequences of penalties, then the linemen have plenty of that.
November 4th, 2016 at 5:59 pm
@Rod Munch – 100% – I was screaming for them to call a timeout and force a punt. His game management is approaching Lovie levels.
November 4th, 2016 at 6:02 pm
@ATLBucsFan – These are simple decisions that 99% of FANS know the correct choice to make, yet our head COACH needs more time to “learn to be the head coach.” Give me a break. Lowered expectations all around today I see.
November 4th, 2016 at 6:03 pm
I repeat, you don’t get better at a job you were mediocre at when you did it at a lower level. Sinking in yet Buc fans that you have a moron running your team?
November 4th, 2016 at 6:37 pm
Atleast he can admit his mistakes, hopefully he can correct them.
Lovie would have just stonewalled the press and whispered simple as that over and over.
November 4th, 2016 at 6:57 pm
Man at that point I would have not taken that flag! The defense looked like pooh butt butt.
November 4th, 2016 at 6:58 pm
I don’t know why but I saw a big td on that next play if we took the penalty hahaha
November 4th, 2016 at 7:20 pm
I really dont mind that decision. Koetter thnks it is wrong now, but at the time i felt like the defense getting off the field was important. And if koetter actually trusts this defense then he is an idiot.
November 4th, 2016 at 7:49 pm
It made no difference for a team that was severely outmatched, outplayed and outwitted.
November 4th, 2016 at 8:26 pm
I’m going to keep it real simple;
In the words of the immortal ASJ,
The Bucs took a huge S?!@! On the fans last night.
November 4th, 2016 at 8:31 pm
you guys are something else
koetter the dumb clown is trying to save face to all the nfl, college and highschool level coaches and coordinators of his stupidity…and you guys agree that his original lamebrain decision was ok?
koetter and licht
dumb and dumber
November 4th, 2016 at 10:00 pm
All of you who supported the decision can eat crow.
November 4th, 2016 at 10:34 pm
“I for one was thinking the same thing. I’m positive I was not alone. We didn’t have 1 punt all game. Zero, cinch, sziltch. 3rd&22 would have been no different.”
——–
You definitely were not alone. I still believe it was the right decision based off of what I’ve seen from our defense.
November 4th, 2016 at 11:57 pm
Nah…rookie coach screwing up when your team is getting slaughtered. It’s not like he called a “Statue of Liberty” and thrown an much easier pick.
November 5th, 2016 at 3:41 am
Actually I think it was a fine decision.
FG attempt would put ATL up by 6. One TD and the Bucs are in the lead.
On the other hand, accept the penalty, and then your putrid D lets Ryan convert, keep the drive alive and score a TD – then its ATL up 10.
Was the correct call considering the defense sucks. Koetter knew what he is doing.
There is a dumb narrative that Koetter should make certain moves which “show confidence” in his defense or offense or whatever.
WRONG.
Koetter’s job is to win football games, and he should make the decision that maximises the chances of winning, even if they seem to send a message that he lacks confidence in the D.
I mean, of COURSE he lacks confidence in the D. I lack confidence in the D. Every D*MN fan at rayjay lacked confidence in the D. You’d have to be an idiot to have confdience in the D. Don’t blame Koetter for seeing the TRUTH.
November 5th, 2016 at 8:28 am
If Koetter chose to decline and Atlanta scored a td, or even convertrd a first down, the media would never let him hear the end of it.
November 5th, 2016 at 10:08 am
@ RealityCheck – You can’t know what it is like to be in his position. From arms length a decision might be obvious but all we can do is speculate about why a decision was made at the moment. People learn through experience. I’m willing to let him learn.
November 5th, 2016 at 10:12 am
8 games to play with 6 games to win to show improvement over the last REGIME!! GO BUCS GO COLIN. STEP/UP AMERICA. DON’T BOO…VOTE!!
November 5th, 2016 at 2:24 pm
Don’t like the call but agree with it. I also appreciate the accountability. But raise your hand if you think the Bucs defense could have stopped anther third down attempt.
