Irked By Jameis? Blame NFLPA

Stands up for America.
Bill Polian went off this afternoon. And he had the back of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
Polian, who knows something about developing quarterbacks — he drafted and oversaw the development of Jim Kelly, Kerry Collins (before he wigged out) and Peyton Manning — had Jameis in mind when he went off on a beautiful rant this afternoon on BSPN about the current labor agreement between the NFLPA and the NFL.
Some Bucs fans grumble while nursing their cold beer that Jameis is too inconsistent, and perhaps has regressed from his promising rookie season, despite what Dirk Koetter says in public.
Polian, in so many words, said blame the NFLPA.
“[The NFLPA] doesn’t address the development of younger players, which we badly need,” Polian said. The rules of the NFLPA pact “absolutely in the offseason are wrong. The fact that we cannot take a young quarterback like Jameis Winston and have his coach be with him from March 1 on is just ludicrous.”
This subject came up during a discussion on why a number of young offensive linemen and quarterbacks are struggling.
Polian and other vocal critics, such as Pat Kirwan, blame the labor agreement because it limits the amount of practice time and practices with pads, thus limiting the teaching necessary for effective learning.

Someone needs to go off on the refs for not protecting our players. Jameis got hit in the head at least 3x not to mention Evans getting speared.

Yo if I was Koetter I would have flipped a lid and went all Bobby knight on the refs last night. Enough to get ejected from the game. Bring some attention to the fact that we get screwed all the time. Plus getting ejected usually fires the team up.

neither the owners or unions need a crying towel. It’s a billion dollar business that both parties benefit greatly from. Both the nfl and union have made a lot of mistakes and both the union and owners have embarrassed themselves on several different issues. To say that is all they got of the deal is asinine and short sighted… glad your not my attorney.

That may be true, but how do you account for Derek Carr, Dak Prescott, and the other young QBs that are not struggling with these problems Jameis has?
Glennon looked interesting last night. He was spreading the ball around and not locked on one WR. I know, it was garbage time. I would like to see Glennon play one game with a full week of practice if Jameis is injured. Just to see what the differences in the two are in running the offense. Also, MG8 needs more film for his free agency next year.

Don’t fall for it. If you’ve been around long enough, you’ve seen Glennon come in briefly and look good, then stink it up the rest of the time.
And if you are thinking about starting him…don’t. When you realize he sucks…and you will…you would have destroyed the chemistry of the team.
Stick with Winston. He’ll work out his kinks.

That is what the defense was giving up in a prevent defense during a 2 minute drill. It worked for us and we got in the end zone. Not to mention he was firing the ball accurately all over the place even with pressure. Preseason is meaningless when you are playing in a newly installed 1/2 offense playing with 3’s and 4’s.
I’m not saying Glennon is better than Jameis or the long term answer for our woes. I would just like to see what he can do if with a full week to prepare if Jameis is injured. If anything it might help Jameis to see what someone else does.

Each one of the QBs who are doing good isn’t carrying the team on their shoulders like Jameis is. They each have decent (or great) OLines for protection and they each have decent running game to support them and take the pressure off. Look at the difference between Mariota last year vs this year. The big difference? A better OLine and a much better running game. Some guy named Demarcus Murray racking up over 750 yds in 8 games, with another named Derrick Henry tacking on over 200 more. Pretty much the same with Dak Prescott … some RB named Ezekiel Eliott running for him piling up 800 yds in 7 games. Both of those by the way are averaging 31 passes a game. Compare that with Jameis: passing over 38 times a game and his RBs don’t have nearly the yardage of those others.

Mariota benefits a lot from having Demarco Murray and Travis Henry in the backfield. Teams are forced to commit to stopping the run. I rarely see them in situations that require them to pick up more than 6 yds on 3rd downs.

Those are fair points. But, in context to the NFLPA argument by Polian I don’t think more time with coaches would make a difference. If your team is predicated on the run and you can’t run… You will struggle.

To me, Jameis showed that superstar/franchise QB potential many times last night.
A few of the plays/throws/improvisations he made in that game were truly elite-level stuff.
I think he will grow into the consistent QB we need to be successful.

I disagree with you on that and I’ll give you an example of why. Remember Jameis going out and hiring a trainer this off-season to work with him on his footwork and release? Those are things that he should be allowed to work with the coaching staff on in the off-season and not have to go out and get a consultant to work with him on. Fortunately he had the discipline and drive to do it other young QB’s may not.

This is one of many things that are adding to the slop we see. The NFL is not what it used to be. Between the horrible officials, the rules that no one can interrupt, and the lack of ability to hone your skills and work with your team it is no wonder the ratings are dropping. The sport is becoming unbearable and unwatchable. They might as well sell advertisements on the official’s uniforms. We see them more than we see action. Hell, they can allow reality TV celebrities be officials…they love the air time.
It is time for a change….and by change, they need to consider reverting back to some of the old rules.

Yeah, I see your point. Bortles did the same thing and he blames his bad mechanics on how he is playing this year. This mechanics issue is something all of the QBs do in the offseason. Most have personal coaches for it. In fact, Bortles is using his personal coach and not the Jags coaches.
I see your point with nuances of the offense and such though.

Take out the Arizona game this year and Winton has 16 TDs and 5 INTs in 7 games and is hitting about 60% of his passes.
Since the Denver game he has 9 TDs and 1 INT and again is hitting around 60% of his passes – and that’s with only one legitimate NFL level player at WR/TE.
For those that think Winston is a problem, you should really spend your Sundays playing dress up with your daughters, this football thing isn’t for you.

I can’t believe you could watch that game last night and think Jameis is even close to the problem on this team. The D is a complete train wreck. Ryan and Jones were literally toying with them in the 3rd quarter. He only optimism I have is Jameis, Evans and Kwon.

Also just a reminder to the Winston bashers – he’s STILL the youngest starting QB in the NFL. He’s younger than Prescott and Mariota and never played full time football until last year.
Winston is a great, franchise, quarterback. If you haven’t figured that out by now the problem is with you – not him.

Dark has the best oline in the league. Second most of his passes are wi 10yards. Finally Zelenograd Elliot which again comeback to the oline. Believe it or not Dak has a worse completion percentage last week than the bust Winston.
Derek Carr and the raiders had the same struggles last year. “Last year we learned how to compete this year we learned how to win.”
Mariota again has a strong oline, 2 strong running backs and he sinks and dunks all game long.
Winston has a center that is hurt every other series. A rt that take every 4 play off and a lt that is shaky at best. A 5th and 6th string RB and the same at WR and TE.
Seriously if you can’t see that you should watch soccer

Even though the rest of the season might at this time be a wash, I think it’s time we bring in a street free agent at WR (Hartline, Colston, white, Cooper). I know I’ve heard it said, that they’re on the street for a reason, but at this point, what could it possibly hurt?

I think last year created the idea that MM is not a guy who throws down field. It appears that the perception is Winston throws down field, MM throws check downs. The fact is M.M. has a higher avg yds per attempt avg than Winston. He also has more 20+ plays than Winston by 8.
Another point is this, MM last year played in a scheme that incorporated more spread concepts than this year. Spread offenses by design throw short passes. They aren’t dink and dunk as you’ve stated. They are short routes designed to stretch the field versus long routes that seek to push vertically up field. If Winston throws a 5-10 yd route because of the design of the scheme, He is dinking and dunking. MM, on the other hand, isn’t when he throws those same routes because the scheme is that. Nevertheless, MM is this year throwing for a higher yds per completion avg and has more 20+ yds completions than JW. The difference between last year and this year for MM is because of scheme. He seems to be adjusting just fine.
Last, MM is a QB who doesn’t have issues with accuracy, nor is he limited by arm strength. At this point, JW couldn’t be effective in a dink and dunk offense.
He is not accurate enough for it. The fact that MM is throwing down the field and can throw short is a huge advantage when comparing the two. That said, I take JW every day and twice on Sundays.

Derek Carr is in his 3rd year, JW his 2nd. The difference is significant enough that we should think of them in dog years not a calendar year. The difference between a 10 yr and an 11 yr vet isn’t much but it’s huge in the first few years.
JW was a unanimously agreed upon better, more prepared, bigger, safer etc. etc. prospect than Carr. He still is.
The idea of this year’s QB’s playing at a higher level than JW so ipso facto JW is suffering some malady or maladies isn’t accurate. Even though the job is the same, QB, the situations as to where these guys find themselves is not. Would this conversation even be had if JW had 2 NFL quality receivers or DM was having a year similar to last year. The other thing is that other “successful” young QB’s may not be asked to do much. Most aren’t. JW is not ready to carry a team yet. But he’s being judged by fans as if he were. He will be soon.
Dak is winning and that’s what people see. Same for Wentz. Who’s the QB in LA? It’s not the #1 pick in the Draft. Denver Broncos, super bowl champs, aren’t starting their 2016 draft pick. Two of the highest rated players coming into the league aren’t starting and they’re playing behind 5,6,7 rounders. Dak is a 4th rounderer. Point is the league agreed upon who’s more talented and better by the way they drafted. But that’s not the way to find who is having success today. So it must be more like the team their playing for and what is being asked of them than just who’s more talented.
You point out the play of the success of 2 young QB’s but fail to mention the lack of success by the other ones. More to the point, you mention guys that are on teams that are winning and assume that the QB is doing great. Carr is playing great football, Dak is not. Dak is below avg today, he’ll be very good in time, and they’re winning so he looks better than JW who is playing better, asked to do way more with less.

Good point. If you eliminate YAC, Winston is 2nd in the league and MM is 10th.
Their total yards is close but Titans receivers gained more yards after the catch.
Attempts by JW far exceed MM, so that tilts the numbers to MM.

i disagree with duke, jameis is accurate on short patterns,but its not what koetter does and schemes well.
tenn mularky is a good offensive mind and developed matt ryan before koetter in atl. he schemes mm to easy completions with good schemes and routes. they have very good route runners, they gave up on dgb because he cant run routes. mm benefits alot this year from the successful run game. mm can do playaction all day
this development and design of the team is all caused by jon robinson who is a genius. he was our top guy in player personnel at tampa last v2 years

I don’t understand the blind love for Winston. How anyone can say he is accurate is beyond me. Everyone except for the real homers can see the truth. Saying Winston is accurate is just like Trump saying his best asset is his temperament….
Please don’t come with the Pro bowl nomination excuse either because he was the just the first guy not to turn it down. He might have thrown for 4000 but 2000 was in garbage time due to getting blown out and abandoning the run game. Even if the defense played lights out, we still can’t score enough points to win. Glennon needs to play or we will be picking in the top 5 this year. Write it down people!

How about simplifying it all?
After free agency and draft, have a date where all is open for whatever a team wants.
40 hour work week. Teams can do it however they want. Lots of pads, less pads, lots of class room, film, etc… however they want. The players can change teams in free agency if they don’t like how one team does it.
Get rid of all the stupid restrictions. It’s killing the game fundamentals.

Winston stinks open your eyes. Every QB has Superstar potential when they throw a nice TD. To bad the game is 60 min. But when they come out of the half and throw for 35 yards in the 3rd quarter. As the opponent punches in score after score. Thats no star thats the franchise leader in TD passes Josh Freeman.

Hey suggest that we try a faster cadence to get Jameis in rhythm and it keeps the defenses off balance and like on the first drive it leads to Touchdowns not field goals as seen by the exiting of Mike Evans….. Somebody has to Step Up!!!! There’s plenty of promise on the “Team” but we continue to make ourselves one Dimesional
