October 31st, 2016
A whole lot to discuss in what may have been the ugliest game by the Bucs since they got slapped around by the Steelers at home in 2010.
Worst of Jameis?
Last week Joe wrote how a drive near the end of the first half was likely the best career drive of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
Well, if last week was so good, then the second half of yesterday’s game may have been his worst.
Jameis, in the second half, had a grand total of six completions on seven possessions. Good grief, those are Bobby Douglass numbers!
After the Broncos game, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter groused how he thought “We were past this” with Jameis’ turnovers. Joe followed up that statement by asking if Jameis had regressed and Koetter shot back, “No.”
Well, we have all seen Jameis this year and we have all seen Jameis last year. You tell Joe: Has Jameis regressed? Save for a few drives the past three games, and the season-opener, it sure looks that way.
Joe sees on this here site from commenters, and on Twitter, that Roberto Aguayo will cost Koetter his job. Nonsense. But what could cost Koetter his job after the 2017 season is Jameis. The sole reason Koetter is the head coach is because of how he developed Jameis last year. If Jameis regresses, guess who takes the hit? Hint: It ain’t Jay Hayes.
Bucs need more than one tackle.
Joe has long-been a Gerald McCoy defender. Still is. Just check the free archives for proof. Joe strongly believes GMC, for reasons unknown, has been raked over the coals too harshly by irrational fans, which Joe has labeled “The Rabble.”
But GMC did nothing to silence his critics yesterday and everything to inflame them. He racked up one tackle and one quarterback hit through nearly five quarters and 80 plays. This just invites the crazies to come out of the wordwork.
Of course, GMC was limited in a practice with a calf injury last week, so who knows just how hobbled he is?
Hey, Joe spanked Lavonte David for dropping a goose egg in Arizona. So to be fair and consistent, Joe has to wag a finger at GMC for being almost invisible yesterday. The Bucs need more production from him (and no, Joe doesn’t give a damn what his salary is and frankly it’s a non-issue). Joe is certain even GMC would admit this.
That doesn’t mean GMC didn’t make a difference. When he sat out yesterday, specifically in the second half, DaVonte Lambert and Akeem Spence played at tackle and Oakland savaged the Bucs interior with their run game. Spence? He got completely worked over and owned. Absolutely blown off the line play after play.
That simply did not happen when GMC was in there.
It’s to the point with no pass rush that defensive coordinator Mike Smith should try more exotics. Every person collecting a check from the Bucs believes GMC is the best defensive lineman on the team and, honestly, there is zero logical argument against this notion. So when the pass rush is getting no heat, try something different. Move GMC around. Have him run some crazy stunts. Something, anything to spring him free.
Against a good offense like the Raiders, the Bucs need more from GMC than one tackle and one quarterback hit. Joe is pretty sure GMC would agree.
Injuries
So now it appears the Bucs are down to their fourth- and fifth-string running backs with Jacquizz Rodgers having a bum ankle. Koetter said after the game, while he didn’t offer specifics, it didn’t look good.
Hard to believe a running back who couldn’t finish the game with a bum wheel will be ready to rock and roll in three days.
The injury to Russell Shepard scared Joe. While he returned, Shepard sure appeared to have his life lit up.
If Shepard cannot play Thursday, who starts? Cecil Shorts or Freddie Martino and his Band of Renown? Man, talk about scraping the barrel. Nah, nope. Didn’t need a receiver last offseason, nah. Nothing to see here. Move along…
Offensive line took step back.
While the offensive line made serious headway lately, yesterday it let down Jameis. He had to do a lot more shifty scrambling than in the previous two games. It was not a five-star performance by the big uglies, that’s for sure.
Tidbits
* Yesterday was a depressing loss but not devastating. Bucs are still undefeated in the division.
* Just a reminder: Bucs are 3-16 at home since Greg Schiano wsa fired and have won but 17 games since Chucky was jettisoned. Shouldn’t Wikileaks or the Russians be tapping into Bucs e-mails to get to the bottom of this scandal? Where is Julian Assange when you need him?
* Bucs MLB Kwon Alexander had a few mis-tackles yesterday but he still led the Bucs with 14, a tackle for a loss and a pass defended.
* Yeah, yeah, yeah, small sample size: But in just a handful of runs, Antone Smith has shown Joe more as a runner than Charles Sims. As a runner, not a pass-catcher.
* Three of the top four Bucs tacklers yesterday were defensive backs. That’s always a bad sign.
* Odd: The Raiders had five quarterbacks hits; the Bucs three.
* The Bucs had seven second half and overtime possessions total. Five ended in punts. Of the five, only one was not a three-and-out and that drive lasted five plays. No wonder the defense was gassed near the end.

Joe cannot imagine what it is like to year after year shell out hundreds (thousands?) of dollars and game after game go home with your tail between your legs. What an atrocious home record. … Maybe Joe is overthinking things, but last year, Jameis would get just so PO’ed and angry after a loss he was almost shaking involuntarily he wanted to lash out so badly. This year, especially of late, it’s almost as if he is depressed, almost like the losing is getting to him. Joe hopes that is a very wrong vibe he’s getting. Worst thing to happen would be the losing cancer in the locker room infects Jameis. … Remember Bucs fans, you have to fill up the lower bowl Thursday night to prevent CBS-TV and the NFL Network from showing Dixie Chicks jerseys on TV.

How? If he is so Great then trade him pick up a Good DT and a WR to stretch the field. Because McCoy is A GOOD DT no doubt but not at Great DT or SuperStar…Greats step up and change Games. McCoy does not.

D-line was dreadful, small LB’s were ineffective. We got muscled in the drenches on both sides!! Jameis is not an accurate passer. He looked better in a suit throwing at buckets at the ProBowl…..

That Steelers game was tough but Batch threw for under 200 yards and they didn’t commit 23 penalties and still beat the Bucs. Please Joe don’t put down our only 10 win season in over a decade.

Wow this game shook me to the core…I must admit on here that I’m losing confidence in #3. How can anyone truly say that he has improved since his first game. Yes I think he lost us the game to a point. The play calling leaves ALOT to be desired. Far as the defense, mind numbing. Why are we not pressing at the line? They need to figure out what type of D they wanna play… Pass defending that’s good against the run or is it a Run defense that will gamble on pass defence… Please BUCS get right!!!!

As always , Bucs look different in the first half than second half, JW was off, really off the second half , but also he doesn’t have anyone to throw too , I wish we would trade for 2 WR , they are more sure things than draft picks , t smith , and say b Marshall , prob would take 2 third day picks , to get them , better than using a 2nd and 3rd on a kicker that u know can’t kick

Only Bucs fans give up on their team at 3-4. Get real, Joe. We almost beat an elite offense team. The score of this game was not a blowout and we can rebound this Thursday. We do not have the skill yet to where we should have won this. We are not that good.

Spences quote about 6 and 7 man 0 lines and double doubles inside and sometimes on the outside was telling.and they also picked almost every blitz we tried.
Here’s my take,we need to do the same thing with our offense.Give Jameis more time and less receivers to worry about.We have to see if this will allow
Jameis to settle in and lead his receivers properly.He needs to bring the ball down to the numbers more.

To start off im not a believer in what ifs, just not worth the energy to make yourself crazy about, we do that alot here though to try to stop the spewing negativity on here, which is like a bad cold once you get it-it lingers….But……..WHAT IF…..lol…… we win that game……would we be talking about a decent close game with things to work on or still this crippling non belief in this team right now, and i’ll admit i think the same sometimes. To compete with a top team and offense was the plus, the laydown and not be creative or make adjustments was the bad. we need to be Mentally stronger

^^These are the three main culprits of that embarrassing loss yesterday.
The defense was awful down the stretch but it would have looked much different had we taken the opportunities Oakland was giving us and put the game away in the first half.
Going into the half with three timeouts was an abomination. Dirk started the collapse and deserves most of the blame. That’s what Dirk decides to give the poor fans who showed up for that s**t? Tail between your legs bulls**t!!! He should be ashamed and never open his mouth again about the fan’s support. He should donate money to the Battered Bucs’ Fan Association of Tampa Bay.
Winston needs to figure out what the hell he’s doing out there or we’re going to have a question mark at QB again.
After two wins over bad teams, guys stepped up and you thought the depth wasn’t all that bad. None of this guys stepped up yesterday and we don’t have enough picks or FA money to plug all these holes.
Raiders are a good team. They are much, much better than our Bucs and yesterday shows you just how long this team has to go. It’s depressing.

I’m dumbfounded that after Raheem, Schiano, Lovie and now Koetter, and we’re still talking about finding a pass rush. After watching RedZone Channel and seeing nearly every team able to apply at least some pressure on QBs, I just can’t believe that our guys can’t even get close.
You’d think that every once in a while, a Raider would have missed a block and we would have gotten some pressure by accident.
I mean, h&ll, send the house on blitzes. We can’t cover anyway.

GMC is the best d lineman on this team? Like that’s anything to brag about. Yea you have to wag a finger at him for being non existent his entire career. You can’t make that kind of money and only make a few impact plays a game, leave it to a Joe too throw out the injury excuse for someone who is injured every freaking year. How many coaches do we have to go through before we realize the defensive players we have are garbage and that includes GMC. How much is Detroit missing SUH? Is a team game and one player doesn’t make a defense. McCoy sucks. He’s not a real mvp caliber player, just another guy drafted high that made a couple probowls but I guess that’s how media judges if someone is good or not. He’s just another average player if he was more the defense would be better

keeping vjax, resigning martin, counting on murphy, bell, hump and the rest of the insurance salesmen at receiver HUGE mistakes by Licht. I WAS a licht guy. I like his drafts for the most part with the exception of the kicker and the vh3 pick will not work out long term. the young blood plays much harder and has TEN times the heart of the old guard led by smiling ice cream man and lvd. Resigning Dotson was another huge mistake. Dotson has been horrible and easily could have been upgraded during the off season. Banks, Glennon and Verner should have been moved as well.

Excellent recap Joe, thanks. Agree with Bob in Valrico that Akeem Spence’s observation was right on target: Bucs DLine and blitzes didn’t have a prayer the way the Raiders were blocking. Of course, if you keep 7 blocking, that only leaves 3 for the QB to throw to. But when 2 of those 3 are Cooper and Crabtree that’s not too bad. Bucs simply had no answer for the Raiders scheme.

What’s even more disturbing about Spence’s comment, regarding the Raiders committing to 6 and 7 man protections? That means the back SEVEN of Tampa’s defense had to cover THREE or FOUR eligible receivers. So unless my math is off, Tampa had the ability to take away both Crabtree and Cooper with…THREE OR FOUR defenders left to cover the remaining 2 or 3 receivers, again, depending on whether the pass protection called for 6 or 7 blockers. 513 yards, plus another 71 taken away by penalty. Pathetic. And once again, the slant monster bit the Bucs corners in the a$$. Is it in their contracts, that they get paid by the percentage of the time they spend 13 yards off the line of scrimmage? If you go back over the past several years, these posts haven’t changed. Whether it be 2010 or 2016, the music is still the same. We want this team to be competitive, we wait for several months every year hoping for a good football team, we express our disappointment to the point where we don’t even bother before seasons end. We hear the same crap from those who we root for every Sunday…”They wanted it more”, “We have to do better”, “We have to change the culture”, “The other team gets paid too”, blah, blah, blah. I love the Bucs. Still have the Topps football card that captured their first win over the Saints. I wear my torn 2004 training camp T-shirt every Sunday, and watch them. Hoping that particular game will be the one, where it all comes together. All that being said, rooting for a team that has won 17 HOME games since 2009…is too much to take. It’s one thing to lose, it’s another to play so poorly, that we fans have to wonder what’s going on behind closed doors. OTA’s, mini camp, training camp…and this is the byproduct of all that??? See ya Thursday, fellow Bucs fans. Is says a lot when we’re just hoping for an 8-8 record, like has the same meaning as a playoff berth. Just sad…

No Dline pressure.. Now don’t forget that the Raiders have a great Oline but dang 3 minutes to pass Also don’t blame the DBs no one can cover those two WRs for that long…
No pressure on the Defense and Horrible passes by the QB were the down falls of this game…
We need a DLINE that will get in there and want to knock the crap out of the QB.. But we need the LEADER to step up and Demand it

We need our Veterans to stand up and Close the Coaches door and DEMAND IT..

Really dis sainted that GMC can be aid like a QB, but have little to no impact on the outcome of the game, nor does he elevate the play of others around him.
Just sad to see the same old tune each year. We need a roster overhaul.

@atrain….you blame dirk because he tucked his tail in the last 2 minutes of the game….he was playing for OT…..vs del rio playing to win….del rio went for it twice on 4th down….1 of which caused a penalty by jude, the other was on the final play of the game….del rio played to win….had dirk gone for it on the last 2 positions we may have gotten into fg range….we may have gotten a PI…something…at least try and put your team in position to win….he didn’t….GO BUCS!!!!

I’ve lost total faith in the head coach. The way he gave up on the last drive in the fourth quarter just put the nail in his coffin for me. Starting at the 25 with less than 2 minutes to go and either 2-3 timeouts left and you have zero confidence in your “franchise” qb? That’s giving up in my eyes. I seriously sat there quietly shaking my head as all of my raider friends laughed. I used to get angry and throw the tv remote but this season, after each depressing lose, I’ve just sat there depressed and angry. Sadly, its going to be the start of week 9 and I’ve just checked out of this season. And please people, spare me the “we’re only 3-4 and can still take the division.” Bucs have shown zero on the field to think that way.

Now I will comment: everyone is the blame except Coach K & Coach Smitty, GMC is not the problem here, no defensive end is the problem here! Last year a loss of the magnitude (and there were a few) and LOVIE would taking the hit big time. Let’s face it people (you too TMAXCON) this defence ain’t fooling nobody to be honest it’s looking a little rag tag! It’s time for this team (coaches mainly) to get their stuff together! @bighog…I agree….it seems people want to bash Winston & GMC but don’t want to blame licht dirk and smitty…..second game of the year dirk tucked his tail and quit on his team….smitty and his defense has shown no improvement even though he’s working with more talent and licht f’ed up big time by trading and selecting a kicker, grabbing 1 de and no wr’s in the draft….but everyone claimed this staff was an immediate upgrade over the last staff….no one wanted dirk as a hc because of what we’re witnessing now….there was a reason why smitty’s phone didn’t ring until dirk was on the other line….your right @bighog…the conspiracy has been exposed….and so has dirk, licht and smitty….GO BUCS!!!!

@tmanxcon….lol…dirk has been embarrassed yet again….dirk and his buddy smitty are giving the previous staff a run for their money…..so is a 6-10 record under dirk some how better than a 6-10 record under lovie?….even though dirk has better talent….what’s the difference between 4quarters and a single dollar?….GO BUCS!!!!

A-Train, your amazing. Two weeks ago the Bucs were playing the 17th ranked offensive line. This was the 1st ranked Raiders O line. If you read the article which spells the physical difference between G Mac in and out of the game, youll get it. You want to replace 93 with a better DT? Please name one. There are only a couple, at best. You see everyone ELSE in the nfl knows what an asset 93 is. And his $$ is only an issue, if you are paying him. There is plenty of salary cap room.
Without 93 in the game we will set our Line back 2 years. We are finally at a point where the talent around McCoy is getting better. Now..on to GAME THEORY: Raiders are no.8 rushing team, getting 5-6 yards a clip on their runs. You can’t pin your ears back, you have to play the run too. Bucs for the last two years excel at this. Our problem is not 93, its having a pair of good bookends to rush that QB. THAT is where the pass rush comes from. Old Bucs, it was Rice, not SAPP. Look at current dominant Defense like Minnesota and Denver. Pressure from…..where?? The EDGE! Not the DT! The DT shoots the gap, causing a double team, freeing up an edge rusher to get to the QB! 93 is only one of a small handful of players who can shoot that gap as fast as he does.

I’m all about writing truth. I’, all about facts being stated everywhere. But I’m going to say what I’ve been saying forever… Tampa has the most most depressed and negative fan base in the ENTIRE country. (I move and travel A LOT for work and pay attention). Whether fans want to belive it or not…. this HAS AN EFFECT ON THE TEAM. ALL THE NEGATIVE COLUMNS, NEGATIVE COMMENTS, LACK OF SUPPORT TRULY effects the palyers. It’s the extra 2%. You don’t think it’ss true??? Look at what Koetter said last week about the fans in Tampa. That is a guy who has coached in quite a few spots around the league and has seen up close the different types of ffans there are in various cities… he was basically saying that Buc fans are horrible, to the point where he felt he literally needed to say something.
I was at the game yesterday. I flew in from Los Angeles just to see my team. When the Bucs had the ball late in the game with a chance to win… I could literally hear the Raider fans shouting for their defense more than I could hear the Bucs fans shouting for their offense. Sickening. It makes me ashamed at times to be from a city such as this. I watched as Buc players on the sideline waived their hands up to get the fans to get loud when the Raiders had the ball in OT. I swear it actually got quieter. I could hear Carr changing signals at the line on a 4th down play in overtime – a play that if the Raiders failed on would have given the Bucs the ball near midfield. Are you f-ing kidding me. The reason the Bucs lose so much at home is because Tampa fans are the worst, demoralize the team, and have become a true advantage for their opponents. Tampa fans are getting exactly what they deserve.

Licht is a smuck and never would be allowed to enter or sniff a draft room. He will never ever be a GM in the nfl or college ever…so why should we in tampa to continue. He is a buffoon and a mockery to the NFL FO circles

Since we all have our pitchforks out. Why don’t we call out our safeties? Conte got beat over the top several times in the game and I’m pretty sure we had to switch to man coverage on the outside because we couldn’t trust our safeties. Yes, everyone had bad games but our safety play has by far been the worst part of this team. Jameis and McCoy are the foundation of this team so we can cry all we want about their performance but we cant milk a turnip. So let’s start calling for some change that’s actually reasonable

Tony…I concur, because I’ve been at that stadium hearing fans of opposing teams get louder than ours and it is TRULY sickening.
We DO have the WORST fans in the NFL. Period.

I travel from TN for at least one home game a year for the past seven years and I have never witnessed a win in that stadium. Sunday was my last trip until this home game thing gets better. Every road game I have been to in that same period of time, we have won. Fans came out but the team didn’t.

@TONY…I disagree….in the mid late 90’s early 2000’s we had one of the best home field advantages….it was hot and loud….that’s because we were winning….it too damn hot to be out there watching this type of football….combined with the constant turn over in coaches and executives letting good players walk out the door….don’t blame the fans….it aint our fault the product sucks…..a stadium full of drunk passionate fans doesn’t produce wins….a team full of hungry, passionate, mentally strong and smart players produces wins…..GO BUCS!!!!
