Would Bears part ways?
You know the Bucs need a wide receiver; Joe knows the Bucs need a wide receiver.
So too does Jared Dubin of CBS Sports. In a column about what each NFL team needs to acquire at Tuesday’s trade deadline, Dubin is not beating around the bush at who the Bucs should both target and land.
That would be Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery.
The only reliable target Jameis Winston currently has is Mike Evans. The Bucs love themselves some tall wide receivers that can go up top, and Jeffery certainly fits that framework. He could easily slide in across from Evans and replace Vincent Jackson, giving Jameis two young, talented receivers to grow with over the rest of his career. It would be hell for opposing cornerbacks to deal with the physicality those two bring to the table. As a bonus, the Bucs’ tiny cornerback group would get used to working against mammoth-sized wideouts in practice.
The only thing that would give Joe pause on Jeffery is last year he missed a lot of games, though this year he has answered the bell for every Bears game.
Joe isn’t worried about his low yardage totals the past two years because he was hurt last year and look who he has throwing to him.
When bratty Jay Cutler was healthy, Jeffery racked up solid numbers.
Joe can’t see why the Bears would give up on Jeffery, but then again, he is a free agent after the season. Unless he is tagged again, there is always that danger he bolts for nothing.
Would Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht be intrigued enough to pull a trigger on a trade for Jeffery?

The Alshon Jeffery trade could happen but the oft-injured WR is making 14.59mil on the franchise tag for 2016 and will require a long term contract for that number or more. Ian Rapoport appearing on Wednesday’s edition of Up to the Minute Live, reported that there are no Jeffery trade talks between the Bears and Philadelphia Eagles.
He further explained that it’s “essentially unprecedented” to trade a franchise player because the new team cannot sign the tagged star prior to the start of free agency. In which case, the selling team can’t expect to receive more than a mid-round draft pick in return for a half-season rental. Since the Bears will likely be awarded a mid-round pick in the compensatory process should Jeffery seek greener pastures in free agency, there’s little incentive for a trade.
The 2017 draft has 20 WRs rated from the 1st round to the 4th round. The likes of Mike Williams/Clemson, Corey Davis/Western Michigan, Isaiah Ford/V-Tech, Cooper Kupp/E. Washington and perhaps Mike Evans favorite, Josh Reynolds/Texas A&M are there.
It’s JMO, but I would prefer another Mike Evans from the draft that can bond and grow with him and Jameis Winston. Personally, I would hold my fire and make WR a high pick in the draft. However, I’m a Buc fan and I will support any decision they make. Go Bucs!

All depends on what it would take. We are not 1 player away from contending in the Super Bowl. If they did get an upgrade at WR now, that would free up a draft pic.

Rumor has it they are willing to move a pick and verner or banks. One problem would be not being able to extend Jeffery since he is under franchise tag tho.

Alshon is already playing this year under the franchise tag, so he can’t be tagged next year, however, it also makes it difficult to trade a tagged player during season.

Plus I think he is the kind of wr we need opposite Mike. Burners are nice but they aren’t going to take double coverage away from Mike so we would still end up having only 1 receiver who could for sure move the chains. We need someone that can catch contested balls besides Mike and are also an above average route runner. We can pick up a speedy wr in draft and let him challenge humphries for time in the slot.

The whole reason to make a trade is to make your team better, so the answer to the question is YES, this would make the BUCS a better team so long as you are NOT trading equal or better value players. Personally, would love to see this WR combo lining up together.

I would rather wait till the offseason then just draft a WR and get a older sure catching free agent!!! The draft pick the Bucs will have control over on a rookie wage, and the veteran free agent is there to teach and be ready if the draft pick is not ready day 1!!!
If you trade now, you will give up the same resources ( draft picks and resigning for big money) and the only advantage is that you would have him for 7 games this year in which he will be just trying to learn the offense!!!! and also will not know all the audibles which just make the offense look worse!!!!!!

Glennon Mob (and proud) card carrying member here, but a Glennon + Vermer or late 2017 pick for Alshon would probably be a good move for both teams. The Bears have a need at QB (and I think Glennon has a legit shot to win the job over Hoyer or Cutler), and with VH3’s development Verner might get a chance to play a bigger role on the Bears.

Mike Glennon and Verner have very little value. Banks is probably worth a 6th round pick. None of them good enough to start for the Bucs.
What in God’s name makes any of you think any of these guys is equal value to a legit #1 wide reciever? Duh!

Not sure why anyone thinks any team wants banks, verner or glennon. Please stop. They DON’T. Teams at the bottom like the bears and brown only want one thing… draft picks. So what would you give for Jefferies? I guess you wouldn’t give more than a 4 but if we win sunday maybe we get a little jazzed up and up it to a 3rd rounder. That’s a lot though for a guy who wants a new contract and is a free agent in a few months. I’m sure the bears just sit tight bc i doubt they let him walk for a 4th rounder. We did with talib but part of thet was he was a head case and we weren’t going to offer him a serious contract in the off season

we have the money but not really at that position. Alshon is going to want a big contract next off season and then you are going to want to pay Evans big money the following year. Best to keep the pick and maybe get torrey smith which is a cheaper contract you can cut anytime.

This would be one of the reasons NOT to trade a draft pick to move up for a kicker, said it then too. Take him in the 3rd, he would have been there. There were pretty good receivers available with that 4th rnd pick they traded. Of course not alshon jeffrey good but not many are. Now theyre gona have to mortgage the future. Cmonnnnnn Licht. Sorry but Kobe Faker has more trade value than Glennon has. No gm will trade anything for a bad backup who has not done anything in nearly three years.. Especially when said bad backup has zero upside or future with the exception of selling insurance with Murphy and Bell

Hell No. Stay the course. Roll with what you got and/or bring in affordable upgrade options if WR talent upgrade is needed for the rest of this year.
Draft a stud receiver prospect next year in the 1st or 2nd round and his pay will be 20% of what Alshon Jeffery will cost over the next 4 years.

The bears could lock him up to a long term contract BEFORE they trade him to us. Then they would get a better pick and if they front load the new contract then we still have the $ for Evans and Winston when they need new deals

It seems pretty implausible, but a straight up Glennon for Jeffery trade on a rest of the year rental for both sides would be something to definitely consider if the Bears have decided they are ready to let Jeffery walk next year. We can afford his salary for this year and next if need be but definitely can’t tie up that kind of $ at the receiver spot long term when Evans will be seeking similar compensation after next year.

Strong consideration if Bucs win on Sunday. If they do and Jeffrey would want to play for a contender and Bucs could get him for a player and a 5th rounder or rounder it’s worth it even if it’s only for 7 or 8 games.
Consider it a short term investment. Jeffrey hasn’t proved he’s worthy of his contract so if he wants to resign with Tampa next year at far less money, great, if not and he wants to test the free agent market and another team wants him for big money, fine let him walk but having him on the team short term gives Winston a faster version of Vincent Jackson with better hands who can get behind a defense.
He doesn’t have to be an expert on the offense, he can run deep patterns and sideline routes and will get single coverage.
The only question is will the Bears trade him for a low round pick.

I’m for standing pat. We will have the money and draft picks next year to address our WR position…..(should and could have done it this year).

If the bucs win sunday they need to go get a WR now, torrey smith is also out there and probably in the price range, good thing we grabbed a K in round 2 instead of a WR and then reached again for a safety from nowhere U, Licht start scouting the powerhouse SEC programs and grab legit big time players that WILL help the bucs instead of projects from NC STATE SHORE U or the UCLA benchwarmer…..and that crappy kicker…licht the bucs need NFL safeties

Bucs will not trade for Jeffery. It goes against Jason Licht’s philosophy of “building through the draft” to trade for a guy that would cost us depth and a pick and a fat contract next year along with all the other fat contracts we are going to have to sign with all our good young guys. Shep/Shorts the rest of the year, WR in 1 or 2.

Rashad Greene didn’t see the field last night, not even his usual punt return duties. I have to believe he’s on the trading block. Would come much cheaper than a Hopkins or Jeffery, like a 5th or 6th rounder. Though Hopkins would be a dream come true, he will want top 5 wr money (he is worth it, him and jameis have chemistry, but we have a lot of guys to take care of first).

There is such a small chance that ANY trade happens. It’s not like Alshon can just waltz in and play 100% of the snaps right away. He would have an entire new system to learn, timing to get on the same page, etc. Factor that in with his contract situation and it seems very unlikely.

A Jeffries / Evans duo should be sick! A lot of things to weigh in the balance, most of which has been mentioned. However, if our Bucs mess around and remain in playoff contention, they need to consider making a move. This guy is a proven NFL caliber WR and we’d only blow our 2nd round draft pick. Heck, maybe that’s the answer: give them our 2nd since we waste that pick annually. The Bears wouldn’t turn down a 2nd, would they? As a Buc, however, He’d probably take the obligatory 6 weeks to learn the playbook.?!

Tmax, everything in there except seeing the field is YOUR opinion, one the coaches and GM seem to not share. I’m not saying Mike is the second coming of Peyton Manning, but when your (Bears) backup QB (Hoyer) outplays your “franchise QB” (Cutler) before suffering a broken arm, and your (Bears) current backup is Barkley…they may place a higher value on Glennon than some JBF posters?

we should make the trade….even if the wr has to take time to learn the play book, the main objective is to not have teams double evans….with the right wr teams will still have to respect both sides of the field limiting the times they double evans…..a simple decoy…that will only last 4-6 weeks….by then he should know the play book well enough, just in time for the playoff push….GO BUCS!!!!

So.. if we trade for Jeffery since he is a franchised player, wouldn’t that make him a FA again a the end of this season? So.. if he works out you re-sign him and extend? If there is any chance the Bears consider trading Jeffery, Jason Licht should do what it takes to sign him, including giving up a high round draft pick and a player if necessary. A player of Jeffery’s caliper, who is willing to play in Tampa, don’t come around every day. At 6-3 218 and only 26 years old, he could be a huge addition next to Evans for years to come. The Bucs also have more cap space available next year tan any other NFL team. Here are some FA WR who could be available next year. Terrance Williams Cowboys, DeSean Jackson Redskins, Michael Floyd Cardinals, Emmanual Sanders Broncos.
