Costly blunder
The truth has come out on the brainless penalty committed by America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, on Sunday.
For those who blocked out that crime against intelligent football, Jameis was called for a personal foul after arguing the spot of a third-down play in the red zone that left the Bucs in a 4th-and-inches situation in the second quarter.
Jameis lost his head (something he did in Week 2) and found a way to show up an official and draw a flag. It was a selfish act and Joe can’t ignore it just because Joe loves Jameis.
Dirk Koetter addressed the play on the Buccaneers Radio Network this week. Koetter acknowledged that Jameis’ screwup was significant because Koetter was planning to go for it on fourth down. Instead, Roberto Aguayo kicked a field goal.
“We had our mind made up. We were going to go,” Koetter said of the lost 4th-and-inches opportunity. “I mean, we were running the ball well at that point. We were going to go. I talked to Jameis immediately when Jameis came off. Then I went and spoke the official on my side, who wasn’t the one that threw the flag. It was a different one; I went and spoke to that official and then I went and spoke to Jameis again.
“That’s just not an acceptable penalty for Jameis or anybody else. That’s not an acceptable penalty for me. You know, it’s costly. That could have been much more crucial. Luckily, you know, we got the three points.
“It’s one thing to disagree with an official. It happens all the time. But one thing we can’t do is show an official up. The league makes that very clear. And that’s really not Jameis’ personality. Jameis let his emotions get the best of him in that brief moment right there. I know he feels bad about it.
“Hopefully he’ll learn from it and it won’t happen anymore.”
This kind of thing gets lost in a victory, but it can’t be ignored. Jameis doesn’t have a firm handle on his emotions, not enough yet to become an NFL great. Joe hopes that evolves with more experience.

I think that’s reaching a little bit. Not that I agree with yelling at ref but heck Brady was going off on refs in the game vs Denver not even 2 years ago due to a non pi call. Are we saying Brady isn’t in control of his emotions enough to be great?
Brady knows he’s Brady, so he won’t get that flag thrown at him, just like Michael Jordan knew certain calls would never go against him. –Joe

I’ve seen qb’s bit ch and moan much more excessively, even with more aggressive body language. I’d like to know what exactly he said that drew the flag, guessing it was personal.

He deserved it, but I wish it would be called against some of the more whinier qbs over the years. Definitely some double standards.

Good learning experience. And since we won, it’s a freebie. No doubt Jameis will learn from it because he hates to lose.

Not a freebie. Those refs and their crews are vindictive little bastards. Expect 0 leeway from that crew. I honestly think that’s why Evans didn’t get any calls his way last year. He complained too much. Schiano too, especially with his peewee tactics.

America’s QB does not yet have “composed” on the resume but it will get there, I’d rather have a qb that cares too much than the opposite (FREEMAN)

Sorry Tamap Tony, your just going to have to get used to it. Tampa’s career passing leader is Testeverde who threw for 14877 yards and 77 touchdowns in 6 years. Jameis is on pace to blow that away with 25536 yards and 148 touchdowns over a 6 year period, if he simply plays the way he is playing right now. I know its hard for you to accept, but Jameis is already by far the best QB the bucs have ever had.

If Winston felt the result of the play was called wrong, should he have called a time out? What would be the procedure?
What’s being lost in this is the fact that the ref screwed the Bucs over before Winston lost his cool.
Proof once again that the refs try to decide games.

Bucs have been been bottom dwellers more than winners. Refs like winners. They are also getting more incompetent. That’s a big reason why NFL ratings are starting to drop. THAT will get the league’s attention if the decline continues. Moolah$$$$$$$$$$$ walks…..etc.

I have no problem with it because we did get points….I happy someone showed some emotions and was pissed off….the refs never give the bucs a fair chance…glad to see jameis isn’t standing for it anymore…..GO BUCS!!!

What is lost on that play is why the “all pro” receiver ran a three yard pattern when he needed four to secure the first down. Now THAT is unacceptable…

I’m a Jameis fan, but he should’ve kept his cool there. It was a dumb penalty. He won’t be allowed to get away with showing up the officials the way Brady can or Marino could, definitely not at this point in his career and probably never. That said, the dumbest part of it to me is that the spot looked good to my eye. Really nothing to complain about. Save that for when the Bucs truly get jobbed by the refs, because believe me, it’s coming.

It doesn’t matter what he said. The ref pointed at him to return to his huddle but Jameis kept running his mouth. The ref gave him a killer stare and pointed at the huddle. They didn’t show that on the replay when they were supposedly trying to figure the penalty out.

Robotic refs might be the answer. Robotic cars, robotic troops, robotic this that and the other. It may be too exacting though, like calling holding on every play as it is said to exist. A flying flag fest to be sure.

The refs in that game were awful. San Fran was holding on every play – that play in question was a terrible spot – not to mention the fact nothing Jameis did on that play warranted a penalty.
