Koetter Reaches Back (Again), Signs RB

October 17th, 2016
Familiar face signed.

Familiar face signed.

Curious signing by the Bucs this morning.

On the same day Joe reported no sign of Doug Martin at practice , the Bucs signed running back Antone Smith to the roster. Smith had played for five seasons in Atlanta, three of which were under Dirk Koetter when the Bucs coach was the offensive coordinator of the Dixie Chicks.

Smith has been, at best, a marginal player with limited touches. Joe isn’t sure what this means. Not sure if this means Martin is still in doubt for the near future, or if Koetter is just turning to a guy he is familiar with in case of an emergency. Or perhaps Koetter was troubled by the poor debut of rookie Peyton Barber on Monday Night Football.

As Pat Kirwan of SiriusXM NFL Radio fame said last week, nobody on the street right now is going to help a team. It’s more for development than anything. If nothing else, the timing of this signing raises an eyebrow with Joe.

    Dude is a BURNER!!!!!

  2. BucFan20 Says:

With Sims gone they had to sign someone. Nobody else has shown anything that could replace him.

  3. tmaxcon Says:

never thought I’d miss Bobby Rainey

  4. AC Says:

Fumblin’ Bumblin’ Bobby Rainey? Never really did much for us and neither will this guy but he does have something we desperately need… SPEED!!

  5. tmaxcon Says:

    AC

i was being sarcastic obviously. resigning martin without a legit backup was as stupid as keeping VJAX without bringing in a vet to help Jameis and Evans

  6. DB55 Says:

Does this mean Karlos Williams can’t run the ball anymore? We need a bruiser more than a speedy rb that hardly plays.

  7. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    He’s temporary depth at best.

  8. Louis Friend Says:

So a 31 year old running back with 1 carry in 2 years is the best they could do? Agree that Karlos Williams would’ve been a far better choice.

  9. SOEbuc Says:

Peyton Barber hasn’t shown anything. Maybe Dirk is just bringing in his former players and seeing if they can perform like Quizz Rogers last week, which I believe wasn’t just a one and done type performance by Rogers. If that were the case and Doug returns at some point, we would have a nice ass RB core.

  10. tmaxcon Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai

The entire roster is temporary depth at best besides winston, kwon, marpet, vh3 and evans.

  11. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

anthone smith is a stud, and will run it up in the middle, he is built like rodgers and fast from chasing rabbits down in the muck, dougie must be banged up bad

  12. LakeLandBuc Says:

Antone Smith will get 1-2 touches a game (max) , nothing to get excited about. I do like the signing of Safety Trae Elston to the practice squad, I thought he was a Top-5 safety in college last season.

  13. Joe Says:

    anthone smith is a stud

Maybe Joe’s definition of “a stud” is a bit different — Zeke Elliot springs to mind — there is nothing in Smith’s resume to suggest he is a difference maker in any way.

Lazy, banned-substance user Karlos Williams was signed by the Steelers last week.

  14. Kobe Faker Says:

The ineptitude of this first year of Koetter the clown trying to pose as a Head coach is hindering the development of our franchise QB jameis Winston

Natural transistion from offensive coodinator to Head coach position? absolutely not. Jameis misses the support and structure of lovie smith. Ive read repeatedly last year that lovie and jameis had continuous daily private talks. ala father figure, support system, etc

Koetter the clown is over his head. the playcalling of last year is drastically different than last year.

**repeatedly this clown states “oh , jameis knows what to do”

**asked if it was it was good idea to to keep jameis out their to get beatup at end of game ” ask, ask jameis, he wanted to stay in”

***etc etc examples of foot-in-mouthitis and hypocritical 2 face actions that is bringing an inconsistent nonstructural unaccountable culture

Over and over again , koetter the clown is juggling our football team and turning 1 buc place to a circus

  15. LakeLandBuc Says:

Being Kwon Alexander close friend and high school teammate, should help Trae to get this defense down. I like Trae and i’m pulling for him to make it to the active roster.

  16. tmaxcon Says:

    Joe

I know this is your party and it’s rude to piss in someone’s wheaties at thier own party but man how can you call out Dusty Rhoades stud comment when you just had this to say about a complete washed out bum….

Is Murphy an All Pro receiver? No, but he had great success with Dirk Koetter last year

I think you both have some homework to do… DR needs to look up the definition of stud and you Joe needs to learn what Great Success is…. Julio Jones 300 yard day is great success a washed up bum catching 10 passes when defenses were focusing on actual football players hardly constitutes great success… remember folks the goal is to win not stick with the same old failed players we have already lost with.

  17. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

I was being a little facetious with the stud comment, if he was a stud pretty sure he wouldnt be on the sidelines week 5 of the NFL season, but he did rush for 100 against the bucs one game so he is a backup buc killer just what the doctor ordered for chip kelley

“They” said the same thing about Lagarret Blount. How many rings he got now? How many teams did he help get to the playoffs? Well at least we have hard-working and sober Antoine Smith to be a goal line and short yardage threat. I wonder if he prays too? Fit right in.

  19. Dave Says:

My guess is depth with a guy who knows most the system. I’d like barber to grab some more touches if Martin isn’t going though.

  20. Supersam Says:

Dude actually has talent, look up his highlights. He burned us a lot

  21. R.O. Says:

Seriously.. You’re going to judge PB’s whole NFL career on 3 carries!!?? Holy $hit…..

  22. 813bucboi Says:

man this sucks….I hope doug didn’t have any setbacks…..this aint good….GO BUCS!!!

  23. BucTrooper Says:

I think it’s more important to note that this means that Doug Martin’s injury is that much more serious. I made a prediction when he first got hurt on September 21… here’s what I posted:

    “3 weeks means 5.

Martin continues his streak of on year/off year.

I’m going to make a couple of predictions:

Martin will be back in 5 weeks.
He will play 3 more games and get injured.
Then he will be done for the season.
I’m predicting the Bucs will have him for 6-7 total games.”

  24. Chris Says:

DB, Karlos Williams will fill in, rush for a buc fifty. It’s what Pittsburgh does , it’s what we don’t do.

  25. DB55 Says:

    Chris

My thought exactly. If he would have passed fifth grade bible study we’re talking a whole different scenario. #choirboys #weedkills

  26. Kobe Faker Says:

the nfl is all about motivation ($$$)

sims need 1 more payday contract after this present 1

“Come on guys. i cant put my body into 110% of abuse, last year was a biatch! Im resting this year like my boy Sweezy and we b ready for next year for sho to get the benjamins the following year. you dig”

    doug martin

    “Seige the day! LOL”

    JR Sweezy

“Kobe STFU!, your such a troll” doug martin

  27. SOEbuc Says:

@LakelandBuc I was just watching Elston’s Ole Miss highlights and reading his stats.

“Elston was one of just three defenders in the country to notch at least 70 tackles, four picks and 18 passes defensed in 2016. He piled up at least 60 tackles in each of his four college seasons. As a senior, he was named to the All-America second team by the Associated Press; All-America third team by Athlon and Phil Steele; All-SEC first team by the coaches, ESPN, Athlon and Phil Steele.”

I would love for this kid to become Licht’s next diamond in the rough.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    tmaxcon Says
“Is Murphy an All Pro receiver? No, but he had great success with Dirk Koetter last year.”

Murphy can catch…but he really isn’t a difference maker. Our current WRs haven’t been doing too badly…when our QB actually gets them the ball.

Winston and the offensive line are the big issue on offense. Both are repairable, but the question is how quickly they can be fixed.

I think we’ll draft WR next year, but until then, we’re stuck with who we have.

  29. PRBucFan Says:

3rd down back, Martin isn’t ready.

  30. PRBucFan Says:

And Murphy has missed more games to injury for us than he’s played in lol.

Dude simply isn’t at all reliable.

  31. Chris Says:

PR, but we love injured guys who show flashes, we’ll sign him to a contract extension next

  32. ElioT Says:

Check out some of Smith’s highlight videos… He’s got more explosive plays than anyone else on this roster right now.

He may be 31 but he’s got low mileage. Certainly a better option than Barber.

Thinking they’re being extra careful with Doug and my guess is he doesn’t make the trip to San Fran along with McCoy, Ayers, Shorts & Murphy.

    Go Sucs!

  33. Issic Haggins Says:

Joe, if Smith is worth picking up and better than Mike James then why was he not in camp? This makes no sense at all ? Mike James does everything well and when given the opportunity was damn near great!! I really lose faith in scouts and GM S when coaches start pulling in ex players. Hell I’ll assure you we could use Roddy White !! I was done with the Mike James thing but it is beyond puzzling how bad the talent evaluation in the NFL can be !!! I mean it is a first class joke how many great performances are put out by players lucking into a chance that were left for dead or run out of the league because they weren’t someone’s idea or project . What a Joke !!!
Btw way I think it was R Jean France’s for the skins that fought through a tough double team to secure the win yesterday !!! Note to Gerald McCoy please watch this play because it is everything your NOT !!!! You are a far superior talent but that play is a play you quit on every time !!!

  34. Kobe Faker Says:

    Its very simple

teams with the most talent on their roster goes to the playoffs

    its that simple

always occurred and will always happen evry year since the beginning and who knows the end of future

we have the top 5 worst talent in our roster in the nfl

there is only 1 man to blame, hold accountable, and only 1 position to correct out problem here in tampa

coaches only can coach who they have in our roster

players can play with only those in our roster

only 1 position can change this roster. absolutely no one else

he moved up and gave us a bad kicker in the 2nd round

    i believe in 1 + 1 = 2. Do you guys?

Gump even said it for heavens sake- “Stupid is as Stupid does”

  35. SOEbuc Says:

OMG!!! The one reason I want this season to be over right now is so I can stop listening to this Roddy White BS!!

  36. CloGreen Says:

Can’t we just call ray rice? He would immediately bolster our offense

  37. Issic Haggins Says:

I agree on the Roddy White but after a game or two it was also clear he would be an upgrade on some third down sets !! Just like Bolden is in Detroit

  38. PRBucFan Says:

top 5 worst talent lol, funny

  39. BucTrooper Says:

Let’s just sign Roddy White, Greg Hardy, and Ray Rice. Because WHY NOT??? Doing it the conventional method hasn’t worked in a freaking decade.
