Struggling Jameis

Ugly numbers.
Yes, Joe understands Bucs coach Dirk Koetter went on the offensive recently defending America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
But the numbers are still ugly.
The Bucs are 2-3 barely escaping Charlotte last week with a win. Frankly, for a team that forced four turnovers,barely eeking out a win against a decimated team without its starting quarterback. starting left tackle and starting running back, and a team that boasts a terrible secondary, is borderline shameful.
In other words, to use a popular NFL phrase, it was truly “stealing a win.”
Part of the reason why the Bucs looked so ragged is the offense is struggling terribly. And through five games, Jameis is frankly looking worse than he did last year as a rookie. Consider the numbers Sheil Kapadia of BSPN dug up.
5.65: Jameis Winston’s average yards per dropback. That ranks 27th in the NFL. He’s 25th in completion percentage (58.5), 26th in yards per attempt (6.41) and 27th in passer rating (75.9). The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired Lovie Smith and hired Dirk Koetter, in part, to help develop Winston. But through five weeks, they have the 29th-ranked offense in the league.
That’s simply brutal. As Kapadia noted, Koetter was hired largely if not solely because of his development of Jameis. Koetter’s Bucs days are directly tied to Jameis.
Right now, Goal No. 1 for Koetter is to fix Jameis. If he doesn’t, there is really no one else to point the finger at.

Agreed. This finger currently resides on Winston himself. Koetter can’t hold his hand. He’s starting to go Jekyll and Hyde on us and it’s eerily familiar…

So Joe, how many articles are gonna get written about how bad Jameis is playing this week? 4 top 5 defenses from a year ago & it’s only his 21st game. He’s not Tom Brady in 1 year, he’s only 23yrs old, he’ll be fine b/c he’s shown that he can turn it around. The sky isn’t falling so quit acting like it is.

Its hard to coach and improve someone if the talent is not there. However you can manage the talent with having plays that have safer throws.

All these jumbo sets Winston has to throw out of will be tough for anyone. We actually have passing and running formations in 2016 smh. Cmon guys here I know we’re the Bucs but why do we have to accept this??
We actually rotate players in for running and passing that’s ridiculous. Spread the field got damn. Run some pick plays and rub routes. See if shep can do something in space. See if can do something after the catch. I know it was only the preseason but the catch and run vs the eagles wasn’t lost on me. Hump is make plays after the catch. Feature more of that.
No wonder Mike Evans has so many targets it’s because he’s the only receiver on the field half the got damn time.

The simple truth is that VJ83 has played one year too long. and with no reall threats from the TE no running game ( till vs the panthers) and no real other WR that get open…
Until a little more fire power in the skill positions I will withhold judgement!!!!!!

I say the blame is on both Jameis and Koetter. Put the QB in position to be successful with good play-calling and run the ball. Jameis needs to find the open receivers. They’re out there. He’s missing them.
Could we use another play-maker? Sure, but it won’t do any good if JW doesn’t start reading defenses better. He’s young! There WILL be growing pains, still.

blame it on the organization for going all in on too many fragile players at key positions. Jameis needs help. He is pressing and trying to do to much bucs have 1 wr and that is it. Resigning Martin without an adequate backup knowing full well he would miss games after getting paid and counting on a washed up vjax was stupid….

Maybe if Winston on his longer to mid range passes pretended the receivers feet are the targets, maybe he won’t keep over throwing his receivers so bad.just an idea meant in jest.

Jameis may be a lot of things good and bad – but what he isn’t is a franchise QB. Sorry, but franchise QB’s don’t play the way he’s been playing over long stretches. Through 21 games, Jameis, Freeman and Glennon have very comparable numbers.
You folks on the website and spill the ‘if Jameis only had this or that’, but any true franchise QB works with what he has and does his best with it. And he doesn’t wait years before he starts showing those skills. We’re in year 2 now, and Jameis looks like hot garbage most of the time. So unless I’m wrong, we’ve got a game manager on our hands. A game manager who can’t control his own emotions enough to keep it from affecting how he plays.
It absolutely sucks.

And stop blaming the talent level. Jameis has good enough WR’s and TE’s to be competitive. They get open, he misses them half the time. When they’re covered, he forces it. That’s just Josh Freeman and Trent Dilfer and so many others – both of whom worked with far less talent.

People call it like they see it, me included. I’ve been through 4 supposed franchise QB’s in my time as a Bucs fan. None of them worked out. Jameis shows identical traits to those guys in a lot of way.
A true fan supports their team, even when they know they’re garbage. Here we all are.

And about that Atlanta game. To compare – Josh Freeman went through a 6 game stretch in 2012 where he threw 13 TD’s, 1 INT and had a QB rating well above 100 in each one. After that he fell apart completely because all of his bad habits returned. It’s the body of work that gets judged, not an individual game.

@Louis Friend do you only come out of the wood works when there is bad news and something to beat JW5 with? You remind me of the Liam Nielsen character in Airplane 1, Andrew Luck has been Indy four years and they are still comparing rookies out of college to Andrew Luck as the bench mark for talent coming out of college, remind me what has he done in the 4 years he has been in the league? apart from regressing, but it’s a word you will never find associated with Andrew Lock 1st ballot hall fame. JW has been in the league just shy of two years and we are to take the words of fair weather fans like yours seriously???? GTFOH

Its funny when Jamis has a good game all you experts on this board are nowhere to be found. But when he has not even a bad game,just average the experts come out. My take is relax experts Winston has played 21 games in the nfl. He is going to make mistakes. His defense needs to make plays to give him more short fields to work with, not having to drive75 yards every time makes a difference. Lastly Winston is going to be fine, all he needs is more talent around him, and the time to make plays, give the guy a break already.

@chipbuc- The one “good” game there was nothing to critique. I look at it differently. Certain players are criticized over and over for their imperfections even when a story isn’t about them. Why isn’t Jameis fair game? We’re quick to defend ‘ol Jameis but god forbid GMC or Conte slip up, ooooooooh-wee!
Nobody here is saying to get rid of him. I would say that most of the posts I’ve read allude to the fact that he is a young player that has a lot to learn as you point to, in your expert opinion! He’ll be fine, hopefully. He is no where near a finished product.

Louis you will not win an argument with Seminole fans, no matter how logical you may be. Sad fact was, I was U fan, saw the Testeverde vs Penn State game when he had no clue on how to beat a zone. Knew the Bucs would take him, despite that game. Whelp, than came up with everything in the world about Vinny, he was color blind , etc. He had a long career, but was never a franchise QB . I think the same will be true of JE. I think he could be a good game manager , with flashes, but not franchise.

You’re definitely right about the Nole fan bias. It’s going to take a while for them to see the light, and then they’ll be silent as hell.
Nobody is pulling to be wrong more than me. But the more I see of Jameis, the more I see a guy who isn’t elite, and is really far from it. If he can at least be a good game manager and they can build around that it’d be more than enough to satisfy me.
@OnlyGoodNoles – I haven’t come out of the woodwork. But I’ve seen enough to finally have an opinion based on both the stats comparing Jameis to other former Buc franchise QB’s and outside the team as well. How big of a statistical sample is needed to say a guy has issues? If he’s an ex-nole apparently quite a few more. Jameis issues have nothing to do with the talent around him. But watch the games over, and watch him. You’ll see a guy who isn’t doing the things that the great ones do. Like set his feet properly, or throw with a major league wind up on a lot of passes. But he does consistently display inaccuracy through either overthrows or failing to hit receivers in stride. Those things go back to his mechanics, and are very difficult to fix.
He’s going to have great games (Freeman had a lot of them, so did Dilfer), but that doesn’t make him a franchise QB. Because he isn’t one.

All im saying is give the guy some slack, he is learning on the fly, he is 21 years old with many great years ahead of him. Nip picking him to death serves no purpose. By the way ive been a season ticket holder since Testeverde first year. Its been a tradition for every QB we have had, to over analyze his every move. Lets not ruin another one before hes had a chance to develop.

Give the kid a chance before will ya! he is only half way through his 2 year for crying out loud. Matt Ryan, Mathew Stafford have all been in the league how many years now?
