Aguayo Not Out Of Doghouse

Despite the game-winning field goal last night, it seems Bucs kicker Roberto Aguayo is in Dirk Koetter’s doghouse.
Yes, the Bucs won. All is right with a win, right?
Not always.
Take Bucs kicker Roberto Aguayo. Entering the game last night at Carolina, Aguayo had made one of three field goal attempts. Then, in a tight, hard-fought battle with the offense mostly struggling and points beyond a premium, Aguayo missed two.
Already an unpopular draft pick, the rookie kicker had Bucs fans chewing glass.
So when the Bucs had the ball on what turned out to be the final drive, Bucs fans were freaking out because it seemed Dirk Koetter was pulling a Father Dungy: Setting up for a field goal and not even thinking of taking a shot in the end zone. Setting up for a field goal with a kicker who already gagged twice in the evening.
It was as if Koetter figured Aguayo was the lesser or two evils because of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, struggling with consistency.
Of course, we all know Aguayo made the game-winning kick. Asked after the game if that game-winner erased any sins of the past, Koetter made it clear Aguayo needs to get better, and now.
“I don’t know about that,” Koetter replied when asked if the game-winner eased any concern with his rookie kicker.
“I am happy that he made [the game-winner] and that is awesome that he made it but we can’t miss those field goals. What do you want me to say? We can’t miss those. That could have lost us the game.”
After last night’s win, Aguayo is now kicking at a 50 percent clip. Few, if any, kickers last long in the NFL only converting half of their field goal attempts.

Koetter needs to read Mike Smith’s book regarding how to win in the locker room. Maybe you could get him a copy. Watching him coach, he has control issues. I didn’t see it coming for sure. I was in favor of the Lovie hire and fire. Was really wishy washy on Koetter. I don’t like a bunch of what I see with him for sure. I’m giving Lovie more credit today regarding how he handled Jameis.

The above post may seem off topic, but as we have said, Aguayo isn’t going anywhere for at least two seasons. The above quote isn’t what the kid needs IMO.

Dirk Koetter should be in Jason Licht’s dog house and both Koetter and Licht should be in the Glazers’ dog house.
Dirk Koetter is making the kind of coaching gaffes that I expected someone like Raheem Morris to make. In the 2nd quarter the Bucs went from 3rd and 1 to 3rd and 11 in part due to Koetter’s game managing gaffe’s. People can blame Jameis for the delay of game but last I checked Dirk Koetter can use timeouts too. After the delay of game they still couldn’t get their act together so he decides to waste a timeout there. Did you listen to Gruden there? Basically called out the head coach. Sean McDonough was having a field day talking about Aguayo and all his misses.
I don’t think I need to rehash the cowardly call by Dirk on 3rd and 9 in the 4th quarter. He basically told America that he doesn’t trust America’s Quarterback to make a play.
Aguayo made the kick when it mattered. Great! I’m very happy the Bucs won! It still doesn’t mean it was a good draft pick. Dirk had a good game plan to win this game but my examples above are only two out of many others where the decision making has been suspect at best. There is no excuse for the kinds of mistakes he’s made all year.

If it was any other kicker, on any other team ever, he would be cut today. Period. But because he was drafted in the second round, we now have to keep a player on the roster at a key position who is a liability and makes them a worse team. That’s a terrible way to run a team. It says they care more about saving face than winning. Whatever happened to putting the best players on the field?

If he misses some more, then he goes on IR with an “injury” and the Bucs grab a Kicker off the street.

I love that he puts his kicker on blast. Every makable miss has been a gut punch to the rest of the team.

he should still be in the dog house….dirk is correct…those missed kicks could’ve lost us the game…..
dirk and mike finally had a nice game plan…run the ball and pressure the qb….put jameis and the defense in position to win by pounding the rock which keeps the defense fresh and minimizes jameis’ throws….jameis did a great job of protecting the ball and you could tell by his play that protecting the ball was on his mind the entire game….judging by the call dirk made to play for the fg instead of putting the ball in jameis’ hands, you could tell dirk was thinking about protecting the ball too…..GO BUCS!!!!

aguayo is 50% on the year, our GM jason should be happy. That’s what he was last year in college from 40 yards or more.

they’re not keeping him around to save face. the GM is keeping him around because he still believes Aguayo is a top talent at his position. also, because the best 30 or so kickers in the world are already employed at the moment. yes, this kicker is messing with the very fabric of our season, but he is still probably more likely to nail any given kick than the best kicker on the street at the moment

When they are Free pass Licht picks they can kick at 50% and still be employed.
He may be getting a free pass from the remaining media covering this team but I’m pretty sure that team Glazer is not handing out free passes.

The 3rd and 9 call with 4:21 to go was terrible and inexcusable! The play ended up going -1 yards. The Panthers were ready for it.

Nope. Roberto is still wavy gravy. Like a box of chocolates. You never know what you will get from him. And so is this Bucs team. We showed heart last night. That’s a given. But 2-3 still means you are under 500. And under 500 says..You suck! So Lets not shake our buts and pom poms to hard here cheerleaders. You are what your record says you are. Just sayin…..

Jon Gruden was the guy that took a kicker in the first round with the Raiders. I found what he said to be very interesting.
He said that Janikowski (sp) was horrible in his first year, and that he purposely put him in situations that if he failed Gruden would gain justification to cut him. But Janikowski managed to make kicks in those instances…and then became one of the best kickers in Raiders/NFL history.
So, I’m giving Roberto Aguayo a pass THIS year. All of this year. Hopefully I won’t have to. I’m hoping that as the year goes on, he’ll steadily improve.

I dont get all of this, ” he’ll be on the team because of his draft status talk”. If he misses more kicks he is gone. You read it hear and now. Keeping players like this around get coaches and GMs fired. Read between the lines of what Koetter said in his PC. This guy is history if he has another outing like that. Dont be surprised if they are trying kickers out this week. Im not saying thats a deginite but don’t be surprised. If it was me he would be gone right now. Cut the guy and stop the bleeding. I was at almost half of the practices in TC where the public was allowed….he missed routinely there.

Im not about to blame the rookie kicker. Jameis needs to be more accurate and Koetter needs to step his game up. I hope both improve but we had some open looks that Jameis simply missed.

Free pass Licht is simply not as wise and innovative a draft expert as he and his local sports media entourage would have you believe.
AguaOh,no is a complete disaster and running him out there anymore is utterly unjustifiable. It says to everyone else on the team that you can be terrible at your job if it is in the service of protecting the fragile and fevered ego of incompetent Lovie Smith’s hand picked GM.

As far as the run play on 3rd and 9….doesn’t anyone see they were trying to put the ball on the right hash because our crappy kicker does better from the right? The did the same thing with the play before he kicked the game winner. Even the media keeps saying it was because he had no faith in #3…

Am visiting family in Dallas yesterday and we took the tour of AT&T Stadium. Had fun with my son, they let you go on the field to throw the ball around. The stadium is incredible.
There were a few 25-45 year old guys messing around kicking from the 25 and 35 yard line practising field goals. They were hitting them better than our kicker. Its inexcusable that he is missing 35 yard field goals. These guys were your average fans and they could split the uprights from 35 just walking in from the parking lot.

Just for reference…Bonzai was one of the few who listened to Gruden last night.
Janikowski’s professional career got off to a rough start: in 2000, only 68.8% of his field goal attempts were successful. His accuracy improved dramatically in 2001, when 82.1% of his attempts were successful.

Vinatieri was better but not earth shattering. He made 77% his first year in the NFL then 86% the next year and then dropped back to the 70’s for a few years before finally hitting the 80;s minimum and the 90’s occasionally.

I have been reading JBF for years, but hardly ever post a comment, but some of the comments on here drive me crazy, especially the “fans” who criticize Koetter. It’s game 5…5!! People who don’t know squat about football, criticize someone who has spent his entire adult life, learning and moving up the ranks. These same people will come back and complain that we get rid of coaches too quickly. This is the same crap that got Gruden fired. Give the guy a chance. I thought this was an intelligent game plan. How can I tell? We won! BTW, I agree that GMC is too nice and that attitude has hurt the toughness of this team.

Aguayo’s here whether we like it or not. We have to hope that the struggles don’t continue.
I did not like the play-calling in the 4 and 2 minute drills at all. BUT, we won. I will take the W without too much complaining.
