“You’d Rather Have To Reel A Guy In”

JameisASJBrowns

Quite a defense emerged today for the struggles of Jameis Winston.

Man, offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Todd Monken came to the One Buc Palace podium this morning fully armed and ready to defend America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Monken quoted touchdown-interception ratios of legendary quarterbacks during their first four NFL seasons, from John Elway and more. He had the same data ready for Cam Newton, Matt Ryan and Drew Brees — Ryan and Newton had strong numbers, Brees’ was bad.

The point was Jameis is a work in progress like many young QBs have been. But nobody should be down on Jameis.

Monken firmly stated his deep love for Jameis — “I love that kid.” — and said, “You’d rather have to reel a guy in,” rather than deal with a player who lacked the competitive fire Jameis plays with on every down.

Three of Jameis’ eight interceptions this season were either not Jameis’ fault, Monken said, or came on a meaningless play (final throw against Arizona).

It was pump up Jameis day! “Even the toughest need to be reassured that he’s our guy,” Monken said of Jameis.

Yes, it was acknowledged that Jameis isn’t playing his best football. But while Dirk Koetter was “very concerned” about Jameis’ performance days ago. Now Koetter’s right hand man is going the other direction.

How fitting that we’re in the heart of a political season! Joe’s half kidding there. The team is 100 percent behind Jameis, as it should be, and as the fans should be.

If I am Head Coach Koetter, I am using this as a coachable moment!!! I am telling my team that this is a “Simulated Playoff Run”!!!!! The Goal is 3 to 4 wins against the top teams in the NFL!!!!! I am telling them that 2 more quarters of good football in these games and 2 more plays in these games and that is the goal!!!!

Can’t wait to watch this team regroup after the bye-week!!! There are 12 more games to play to show resiliency and growth!!!!! This team is still learning the systems and will be getting some players back!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I think the smart fans are 100% behind #3.

Perspective and the long term view are not all that common in any sports discussion. I’m not surprised by what I’ve been reading here over the past few weeks. The team has not played it’s best against a killer schedule that included three division leaders in the first four games.

I agree with Moncken that you’d rather have to reel him in…but at some point…not this instant…but by the end of this season hopefully…#3 himself will realize when to rip it and when to grip it and simply eat it.

    Atlanta Falcons (1991)

Favre was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round, 33rd overall in the 1991 NFL Draft. On July 19, 1991, Favre agreed to a three-year, US$1.4 million contract with a reported signing bonus of $350,000. Atlanta coach Jerry Glanville did not approve of the drafting of Favre, saying it would take a plane crash for him to put Favre into the game. Favre’s first pass in an NFL regular season game resulted in an interception returned for a touchdown. He only attempted four passes in his career at Atlanta, was intercepted twice, and completed none of them. Favre took one other snap, which resulted in a sack for an eleven-yard loss.

The decision to punt in the Denver game was a teachable moment for Koetter…..I believe that he was sending a message to Jameis that was important. He took away the one thing Jameis wants desperately…..an opportunity to make a big play…..why, because Jameis hadn’t earned that opportunity.
I may be one of the few….but I support Koetter’s decision to punt in that situation because I think it will serve a greater purpose….the development of Winston. He is our guy and we need to make all the investments necessary for him to succeed.

  5. Buc1987 Says:

Frustrated, angry, and patient. A little impatience too. Mostly angry though.

That’s what I’ve read on these pages since last Sunday.

    Which one are you?

    I’m the patient one.

Did you guys even see Jameis’s jersey on Sunday? Shhh, it was black.

These 2 INTs are completely on JW but the other 8 can be argued.
    ———————————
I’m missing my calling. Hire DB55 now and start winning games.

  7. Newbucsfan2 Says:

Coach should have kept the “concerned” comment to himself! Just called the piranhas out on Jameis by doing that. Hanging him out there on the field and off the field. Not cool! Jameis would never do that to him!

Good for Monken. At least someone around there is looking out for JW!

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @87

Count me patient with both Koetter & Winston…….let’s stick with these guys for as long as we can.

As for Koetter saying he was concerned about Winston’s Ints…..I think that could very well work with Jameis……Jameis has a great deal of respect for Koetter an wants to please him desperately.

  9. Patrick in VA Says:

I agree, we should all be 100% behind him and his development. I’m frustrated. Not so much with Jameis, but the team as a whole.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

It’s amusing that everyone … players and media alike … applauded Dirk Koetter for his openness and honesty when he was first hired. Guy “wears his emotions on his sleeve” as they say. What a breath of fresh air from previous HCs everyone said. But as soon as his ‘brutal honesty’ is uncomplimentary, all of a sudden it’s ‘Whoa, Coach, you can’t be saying that’. Sorry folks, but you can’t have it both ways … Dirk Koetter is who he is (although our rookie HC might be wise to tone it down a tad when addressing the Tampa Bay sharks, I mean media).

  11. Tampa Tony Says:

I’m behind Winston but it’s only natural to be a little uneasy about him with the 7 consecutive games with at least one turnover

    He’s a turnover machine until he isn’t

  12. DB55 Says:

Defense rules. Thank you. Same could be said about a winning roster, you can’t have it both ways.

  13. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Agree with TBBF about the punt…sometimes you need to send a lesson.

Agree with 87…I join him in exhibiting some patience

And as is usual I agree with DRules. He’s spot on about trying to have it both ways. You can’t applaud Koetter’s brutal honesty when you like it and then go nucking futs when he’s honest about a touchy subject.

Along this having it both ways line of thinking.

I was sick with Lovies prevent defense. We wanted more aggression and more chances with our D. We have that now but it has resulted in some giant gash plays against us. Combine that with 14-17 points of turnovers and our D has looked are worse than it actually is.

Our D is currently ranked 15th despite the turnovers and gash plays and recently two weeks of moronic penalties on the back end that converted 3rd and 17 for our opponents who were actually stopped by our D.

Fundamentally what I’ve read the past few weeks is a loud clarion call to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

  14. BoJim Says:

I feel great about Jameis and Koetter.

  15. Danthebucfan Says:

JW is 7 -13 as a starter. Remind me again why MG is so bad?

  16. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Dan

If we have to remind you it’s probably futile. If your own eyes haven’t told you what can we say?

How about the fact tht no other team despite some in desperate need of a QB never made move to get him?

Do you suppose you or any of us here know more about QB play than Koetter?
    Really?

  17. Defense Rules Says:

DB55 … Winning cures all. Or at least it shuts up the critics.

  18. celly Says:

    @Dan…

    MG is 5-13 as a starter….

Jameis has more wins in 1 year than Glennon had his entire Bucs career. He’s not playing, nor has another team blown us away with a trade offer, for a reason.

    Get over it.

  19. unbelievable Says:

    Boom! Roasted!

  20. Negative Jeff Says:

None of this is Winston’s fault. Winston only has one quality NFL caliber receiver. He has no quality running back that is healthy and contributing with Martin missing 5-7 weeks. And he never gets the benefit of a short field becasue the defense is pure crap. So he has to come from behind every week with no weapons and an average at best o-line. And that is why Winston is struggling.

  21. BigStinky Says:

I don’t know what to think about Jameis. We are stuck with him so I do want him to succeed. The last thing I want is to have to start ALL over again with another QB. I still think we should have traded the #1 pick to someone else for more draft picks last year (and this year). This team STILL needs other players at almost EVERY position. Glennon would have been great with DK as his OC last year. I guarantee you we would have finished better than 6-10. Somehow I feel like the Jameis pick is going to set us back another 5 years (or more). I sure hope I am wrong but Jameis is just NOT that accurate and I don’t know if that is EVER going to change. Can’t wait until the turnovers stop so we have a chance to win some of these games. Comparing JW to Elway or Favre OR even Brees is ridiculous. What has he done that would make any of you think he could EVER be as good as any of the QB’s Monken named? It’s not going to happen unless he starts throwing shorter passes. You are either accurate or you are NOT and JW doesn’t throw 60% complete UNLESS he is throwing short passes. He has had two games (this year) where he has thrown for 52% or less. Like I said, I hope I am wrong but I don’t think so. Glennon put up BETTER numbers than Winston in 18 1/2 games and he did it with 2 QB coaches calling plays as OC’s. Still can’t wait until next year to see MG8 play again. I know we are stuck with Jameis and that is why I hope I am wrong, because I am tired of rooting for a losing team EVERY year. Go BUCS!

  22. Waterboy Says:

    @Dan
Because Glennon was a check down Charlie that was way too content with 3 and outs and punts. 1 penalty on a series and you’re almost guaranteed to have to punt it away with Glennon. Winston may force some throws on 3rd downs but you always have a fighting chance with him.

  23. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Uh before we get off ripping the defense and blaming them for our offensive woes.

Defense ranked 15th overall Offense ranked 22 Our kicking is 5th. Anger has at least been the real deal.

Bottom line…it’s been a perfect storm…bad bounces..bad decisions…poor play at inopportune times against a schedule that included 3 Division leaders in the first four games with a combined record of 11-5. Injuries have been very costly.

Each of these taken individually might just seem like excuses…but add them all up and there is no reason to panic yet. And there is no reason to start looking for scapegoats from DK to #3 to the OL the DB’s..GMC..Conte…pick your scapegoat.

It’s been a team effort no need to single out individual scapegoats. Let’s see how they do after the bye against a manageable schedule with hopefully some more players healthy.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

@realist…dirk needs a coaching 101 moment…don’t abandon the run in the first quarter…don’t quit on your team….manage the clock…

@stpete….this defense is worse than the so called prevent defense under the previous staff….this defense gives up big play after big play and cant get any pressure on the qb….with all the lack of talent the last staff had they still managed to finish #10 overall…..

funny how some fans want to be patient with dirk and he’s had half the mess to clean up with double the talent to work with but some how the team has regressed….GO BUCS!!!!

  25. Stpetebucsfan Says:

What has he done that would make any of you think he could EVER be as good as any of the QB’s Monken named?

Well let’s see…he won a Heisman Trophy? Chump award?

He’s a winner…a National Title in his Freshman year. Just luck?

All Pro his rookie year in the NFL…again luck?

That’s how we could “EVER” think he might be as good as the QB’s Monken named. BTW Monken used stats from these players to compare #3 to these QB’s as well.

  26. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Bucboi

The team has certainly NOT regressed. Let’s just start with opening day.

Last year we were HUMILIATED by a rookie QB on a rotten team in OUR house.
It was the worst coaching performance I can recall seeing.

This year we won on the road against a team that is currently 3-1 leading our division.

Our record this season is exactly the same as it was last year at this time..1-3.
Except this year we’ve played three division leaders with a combined 11-5 record. Last year we played only one good team in the first four…Carolina and one decent team Houston…Tenn and N.O. were both losing teams.

It’s a long season. I keep warning you guys to stop making such emphatic conclusions after just four contests.

Remember last year…very up and down…but here is how it goes…it’s where and how you record your W’s and L’s.

The fact that the Bucs couldn’t win a single game in that final four contests against three teams that finished a combined 20-28 if you do not take the Panthers. We lost two of those games at home!!!

Koetter could lose every game until the final four contests and if he runs the table he’ll be hailed as turning it around. It’s when you lose that counts.

If Lovie had won just ONE of those final four he’d still be here.

Please stop with the silly comparisons we are definitely better than last year.

  27. BigStinky Says:

    @SPBF

Didn’t Testeverde win a Heisman, or no? He was a #1 pick too and NEVER did anything but throw INT’S while he was in Tampa. I’m sure his numbers were like at least one of those QB’s Monken mentioned. Anyway, like I said, I hope I am wrong about Winston because I am tired of losing. I want him to succeed so I can keep rooting for the Bucs, been a fan for way too long.

  28. 813bucboi Says:

@stpete….your right we got embarrassed in week 1 last year but we bounced back week2….this year we came out strong in week1 but got embarrassed in week2….

if dirk was to lose every game from now until the end of November he wont make it to see December he will be canned and I can guarantee you that…

last year was very up and down….this year started good but it has been down hill ever since…..as you stated we are in terms of w’s and l’s the same so how are we better than last year….how is a 1-3 record under dirk better than a 1-3 record under lovie?….GO BUCS!!!

  29. 813bucboi Says:

@stpete….jameis was never named to an ALL PRO team….

pretty easy in college to get those awards when you play on a team that has the #1 recruiting class….19 of the 22 starters were 5* recruits….the statement was made about joey bosa….everyone on defense for OSU were 5* recruits including noah spence….notice how both players production dipped once they were separated….GO BUCS!!!

  30. Trubucfan22 Says:

1987, I’m all 4 options. I am fully committed to Jameis and know that he is young and learning still. But I am frustrated with the team and their effort. I am Angry with the coaching staff for not getting our players better prepared for these last games, and for not putting them in the best position to win games. I am impatient with waiting for a winning season. I had a lot of optimism going into this season. I thought Mike Smith could put coach Lovie Smith. Apparently I was wrong. Our defense is giving up more points than Lovies did. Patient, frustrated, angry, and impatient. Why not have it all! 🙂

  31. satchseven Says:

some of you folks clearly did not see john elways first couple of years he was brutal

  32. Waterboy Says:

I don’t even have time to look up the stats right now but I’m pretty certain Testaverde didn’t account for 28 TD’s running and passing his rookie season.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

    Shut em up Jameis!

  34. Danthebucfan Says:

Here’s my point, we are not giving the QB enough time to develop. Whether it is MG in 18 games or JW in 20. Do I think JW has a higher ceiling? Yes! Do I think he will struggle? Yes! Will he be an elite QB? Maybe. Will he be above average? Probably.
Also, Great teams are not QB centered. Patriots and Broncos are great teams even without a QB.
Where would we be right now if we focused on getting talent all over the field? Instead we invested heavily in a QB.

  35. Trubucfan22 Says:

I don’t think we “invested heavily” in a QB. We happened to have the first pick in the draft and took a QB with that 1 draft pick. Whether we took him in the 1st round or 7th we only used 1 pick to get him. Sure a first overall pick is a critical pick with a lot of value. But look at what some teams are giving up for a chance to draft a rookie QB. 3 first round picks? Insanity. The bucs did it right and picked their guy with the pick they were given.

They did invest a good deal on offensive lineman. But regardless of who the QB is, we needed to upgrade our o line. I’m not sure why you would say we invested heavily in a QB. He doesn’t even get paid much, compared to other QBs.
