Good Jameis
October 6th, 2016Despite being second in the league in interceptions, there are, believe it or not, bright spots to the game of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
He outgunned two of the premier quarterbacks in the NFL this year against one of the strongest defenses in the NFL.
In a column in which he tries to break down the best and worst traits of each starting quarterback, Dan Graziano gives Jameis props for — at least in one game — being better than Carson Palmer and Russell Wilson.
Winston has more TD passes against the Rams this season (three) than Carson Palmer (one), Blaine Gabbert (one) and Russell Wilson (zero) combined.
Guess that’s one way of looking at it.
To Joe, there is no question Jameis has taken a step back. Joe’s still behind him, but Jameis hasn’t started off the season like a guy that has turned the corner.
Monday night is a big test. Last year the Stinking Panthers worked over Jameis terribly in both games. Let’s see if Jameis has learned from the past Monday night.
October 6th, 2016 at 5:11 am
I I think we will see better team Monday night .Go bucs!
October 6th, 2016 at 5:31 am
Another bright spot is he didnt throw more interceptions than he did
October 6th, 2016 at 5:47 am
We should give ray rice a chance. I mean yea we would probably get bad press from it but look at the positive side. We could have a cheap RB, he is a down hill runner, and would help Doug Martin stay healthy. We already look bad as an organization so at least give Winston some much needed help.
October 6th, 2016 at 6:10 am
If Jameis hasn’t learned from 2 games last year then this franchise is in BIG trouble
October 6th, 2016 at 7:01 am
Too many are down on Jameis right now (mostly because of his INTs), but without a running game and against top defenses and with average (at best) WRs & TEs he’s done about what folks should expect of a 2nd year QB I think. Reluctant to do this, but was comparing Jameis to Marcus Mariota yesterday based on something I read. Through 4 games each:
Jameis: 103-for-177 (58.2%) for 1,108 yds, 8 TDs, 8 INTs. Bucs have scored 77 pts in those 4 games (2 games with only 7 pts each however).
Marcus: 80-for-136 (58.8%) for 925 yds, 4 TDs, 5 INTs. Titans have scored 62 pts in those 4 games (no game over 20 pts or less than 10 pts).
Both the Bucs and Titans have the same 1-3 record, although I think Bucs have played the tougher schedule. Neither team has superb depth and it looks to me like both QBs have achieved similar results thus far this year. It’s not JUST the QB … it’s the TEAM around them that makes the difference. Look at Siemian with the Broncos.

I think Winston’s slump is the most frustrating part of this season. I knew the games would be hard to win and the defense would struggle out of the gate. I just can’t handle Winston missing throws the way he has been.
October 6th, 2016 at 7:08 am
@Skywalker
Ray Rice is probably about 30 now and was starting to decline his last year in Baltimore. I’d rather see them give Karlos Williams a shot. Whatever they do they need to figure something out in that running game and learn to stick with the run instead of throwing it 40 times a game with a 2nd year QB.
October 6th, 2016 at 7:11 am
The list of excuses for Winston is long.
-no running game
-hard schedule
-average receivers
-his defense sucks
-Ray Jay’s turf needs to be cut
-it’s the receivers fault
-Publix ran out of crab legs
You’d think with a supposed “Franchise QB” he’d make those average wrs good. That’s what great players do, they make those around them better. You’d think with a “franchise QB” we’d have a chance to win in every game. So with these excuses you are basically telling me Jameis isn’t a franchise QB
October 6th, 2016 at 7:15 am
@Defense Rules
Not to mention Mariota has Demarco Murray and Henry in the backfield. Also he has Mike Mularkey who was the coach that groomed Matt Ryan his first 3 yrs in the league so he’s used to working with young QB’s.
October 6th, 2016 at 7:25 am
@Tampa Tony
It’s unrealistic to expect a 2nd year QB carry a team like you’re describing, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that done. I’ve seen young QB’s that were on teams with solid defenses or great running games that were allowed to start out as game managers their first couple years and still slide into the playoffs but I’ve never seen one carry an average at best team like you’re expecting.
October 6th, 2016 at 7:40 am
The good thing is that we have seen Jameis flip the switch before, I just hope he doesn’t get gun shy. Koetter needs to play to his strength which could be no huddle
October 6th, 2016 at 7:40 am
The Glazer family was duped on #3 , Lovie set team back years with that pick
The smart teams showed no interest in trading for the #1 #2 pick 2015
If #3 was anything special there would have been action
Teams get the first pick free by being worst in league with worst team and has stupid people running it, There were some great players drafted after the 2 QB busts Winston and Mariota , now Bucs stuck 1-2 more years with QB that was not fast at combine and has slowed since , just look at his face lots of water Glazzer give him huge signing bonus and he has laughed all the way to the bank – bars restaurants, 4.97 40 at combine when best trainers getting you in shape means 5.5 40s after the 24 million, buffet food lines. And all the Buc fans making excuses , Sometimes it best realize mistakes early, problem is no other team would give him 1/4 of his salary Bucs stuck with him.
October 6th, 2016 at 7:56 am
@waterboy
I’m just going by what the media tells us since they are experts, everyone said he’s a franchise QB he has high football IQ that he’s the best college QB since Manning.
With that type of hype and seeing other young QB’s less hyped play better what should we expect from a “franchise QB”? Should we expect a loss every time we play a good d?
The play on the field doesn’t match the pre draft hype
October 6th, 2016 at 8:01 am
This is the type of culture we need to get away from as fans. Everbody down on Winston like Dougie aint out. Everybody down on the defense because they giving up points and acting like the real struggles of the defense isnt all the turnovers the offense is putting out because its become one dimensional and the coach just because were losing. Cmon bucs fans we better than that honestly as fans. Our fan base has high expectations for this team this year but so many tough games this season shouldve had our fan base waiting on a streak after the bye. Im going to shock Bucs nation now we gonna win MNF and by the next months end we will be in playoff contention seriously. The near future is still a disaster. McCoy i think will and should rest along with Martin and return after the bye week along with Sweezy hopefully as well too.
October 6th, 2016 at 8:11 am
Jameis is having trouble timing short slants.His passes have been to far ahead,behind or overthrown.Now we know he can hit stationary targets like Martin, Vjax and Evans but he often throws to taller recievers high leaving them vulnerable.So I’m thinking Jameis strength is throwing to the outside.
Send one receiver short and one long on each side.That is the Koetter offense.
Give him more targets also even if they come from the practice squad.
Lets right this ship before we lose another coaching staff.
October 6th, 2016 at 8:15 am
Jameis hasn’t taken a step back!!! He is still learning
October 6th, 2016 at 8:18 am
@Tampa Tony
It’s still early but I wouldn’t say he’s far off from where Manning was in his 2nd year in the league and let’s not forget that Manning had some guy with the last name Faulk and Edgerrin James in the backfield carrying the ball during his earlier years. They made a living on play-action passes and Manning averaged throwing the ball 33 times a game where as Winston is throwing 40+ with no running game.
October 6th, 2016 at 8:32 am
I don’t think Jameis has taken a step back. He look WAY better than he did over his first 4 games as a rookie. He looks like an above average 2nd year QB to me. Yeah he has thrown picks, but three of them I remember for certain were not on him.
October 6th, 2016 at 8:48 am
@Waterboy
That’s fair. I’m not jumping off the Winston bandwagon I’ve just moved to the back of the wagon.
He needs to string together 2-3 good turnover free games in a row to start to win me back. No one can convince me that he hasn’t regressed
October 6th, 2016 at 8:53 am
Had Jameis made a play at the end of the Rams game…..everybody would be off his case.
I think Jameis has too much confidence in his ability and lacks fear…..that is a very delicate balance to take….”Do I squeeze this pass in or do I throw it away?” It will simply take some time for him to learn his limitations.
I find it extremely disappointing that we didn’t add some speed to our WR corps over the last two years. Now we have lost ASJ, so our TE corps has digressed….and yes our top RB is down. None of that helps Jameis.
October 6th, 2016 at 9:03 am
I still want the same approach and aggressiveness Winston’s had all year because the panthers secondary is horrible. He must attack. But after the bye I want to see him start to protect the football more.
Winston’s multi int games came against the teams with elite secondaries. That’s where our lack of wide receiver threats shown up. F the picks the yardage was more concerning for me even in garbage time of both games.
The Bucs need more weapons and Winston needs realize if it’s not there it’s not there. Check it down and manage the game a little more.
October 6th, 2016 at 9:03 am
Its way too early to throw in the towel on Jameis. Over his short career he has demonstrated big highs and big lows but he is only 22 yrs old. As he continues to learn, the upside should get even better and the downside should decrease. Between the Rams and Broncos we have faced some very good defenses at a time when we have tons of injuries. We also have a brand new coaching staff and a second year QB. It hasn’t been pretty so far, but if the team stays mentally strong, they have an opportunity to recover after the bye week. The team needs to stay positive and keep grinding and the season can still end on a positive note. We know we are not going to the superbowl this year and probably not the playoffs, but who really thought we were going into the season?
October 6th, 2016 at 9:19 am
The good defense excuses are awful when it pertains to the Rams game as the Bucs moved the ball on them. Why must we always expect to lose when we face a decent defense?
October 6th, 2016 at 9:30 am
Tampa tony
Rams is a good defense as a whole but they don’t have “them dawgs” on the back in that can expose the Bucs lack of receiver threats outside of Evans. Carolina doesn’t have them either which why Winston will bounce back again.
October 6th, 2016 at 9:32 am
@Tampa Tony … “Why must we always expect to lose when we face a decent defense?” Personally don’t think anyone expected to lose Tony. Bucs should’ve won the Rams game, but didn’t. Lots of reasons (excuses?) but 37-32 ‘Rams win’ tells the whole story. Jameis shares a lot of the blame for that loss, but he wasn’t the only reason to be sure.
October 6th, 2016 at 9:43 am
Now go back to 2013. Look at the garbage around Glennon. But you expected HIM to carry the team? NO EXCUSES? BS. All you are doing now is making excuses in the same situation for Jameis. Only he has an OC and an O-line except MR. yellow Flag drive killer Dotson is still here. So is Jackson. You did not allow it then so quit trying to use it now. He has had 20 games. And quit with the 400 yards and that crap. What has that gotten? 1-3.
October 6th, 2016 at 10:11 am
Yes they pointed to Glennons bonehead run out of bounds before the first down. What about the final play in the Rams game. Excuses Tony, just excuses for him. It’s this, it’s that. Where’s the genius football IQ? It’s the receivers , the coach , the line. Not saying Glennon was the answer, but right now Winston doesn’t even have a signature win. Hell, he should be held to higher standards than Glennon, but he isn’t, because the sole reason is, he’s a Seminole.
October 6th, 2016 at 10:13 am
Allll you people defending him are full of crap, root for the damn team, not the individual, be pissed at him along with the defense,, Sims, etc
October 6th, 2016 at 10:26 am
It’s funny because Josh Freeman threw for 25 TD’s, 6 INTS during his 2nd season in the NFL. And the Bucs went 10-6,and the Glazers didn’t spend any money on free agents while Rah was the Head Coach.
October 6th, 2016 at 10:38 am
Let’s see if Jameis has learned
Unlike TampaTony and some of the haters most observant fans realize this is the meme for the ENTIRE FREAKING SEASON!
I’m sure that Tony can go back in provide us with all the many examples of young QB’s making the Pro Bowl in their rookie season. Compare some actual stats for us to back up his Jameis hate.
Meanwhile we’re looking at two seasons of major college ball, and 20 NFL games.
I’m expecting #3 to continue to LEARN and improve. That’s what this season is about. Let’s watch his growth, it’s going to be painful at times especially during a four game stretch against three division leaders with a combined 11-5 record.
October 6th, 2016 at 10:45 am
@Lakeland: the game schedule Morris’ 10-6 team had was a cupcake compared to what Bucs have faced in first 4 games this season. I happened to be a Raheem punter back then. I had my doubts about Freeman, too. This team desperately needs coaching staff stability!!!! 5 HCs plus staffs, 2 GMs in less than 10 years???? You have got to be kidding here!!!
October 6th, 2016 at 10:51 am
Geez still excuses for him, cmon, same size sample for Glennon and Winston, you’re holding a # 1 pick, genius QB to a lower standard than a a third round backup .
October 6th, 2016 at 10:53 am
It’s not hating St Pete, it’s facts, this guy is throwing far more ints and losing more games than a backup QB 3rd rounder
October 6th, 2016 at 10:54 am
Josh Freman looked more sensational that second year than Jameis
October 6th, 2016 at 11:01 am
Josh Freeman had a cannon…alas it had the accuracy of a Revolutionary war era cannon. He could heave a perfect pass 50 yards downfield or he could miss it by 20 yards…he could throw a simple swing pass to a back into the dirt.
His second year he was still allowed to run. When genius Schiano made a scatter armed big QB into a pocket passer and took the run away he eliminated one of JFRO’s actual strengths.
JFRO and #3 are two totally different QB’s.
