Worried about Jameis’ turnovers.
Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was visibly peeved during his postgame comments. And his ire was at America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
In Koetter’s eyes, Jameis was responsible for the three turnovers by the Bucs today, which turned a close game into a blowout by the Broncos.
When asked about Jameis’ play, Koetter said he is “very concerned.” Joe had the follow-up question and asked Koetter if Jameis has regressed. Koetter flatly said “No.”
What is worrying Koetter is that Jameis has returned to the turnover machine he displayed early in his rookie year. Until Jameis corrects this, Koetter said, both the quarterback if not the team will struggle.
Koetter also said it is his understanding that on Charles Sims’ fumble, Jameis was screaming for Sims to lateral the ball back to him.

I miss Lovie, at least the team didn’t have a headcoach blaming his star young QB for loses and acted like a professional. Just what we need now, a headcoach trying to cover for his terrible coaching job by blaming the players.

Sorry, but this whole debacle falls on one person – Jason Licht. Some love him so much they will create a beer for him, but most realize that despite a couple good draft picks, he’s awful at free agency and has been complicit in assembling a defense that gets worse every year.

There is no question that the turnovers are killing us…..and we still are committing too many penalties.
The time for making excuses for Winston is over…..he needs to become more accurate…especially early in games.
I support him and I still support Koetter and believe things will eventually improve.
We desperately need some speed at WR….our receivers obviously weren’t getting open.
Lets get Shepard in for some plays instead of Vjax.
And where were the screens to Sims tonight?

Here’s a clue for the dolts out there… the Bucs had turnovers when they moved the ball, then they didn’t move the ball they didn’t have turnovers. You see what that means Jameis was trying to make plays against an elite defense, when you do that you’re going to have turnovers. Dirk’s halftime adjustments were telling Jameis to not throw the ball unless people were open. Well here’s a hint fellas if you watched the game, no one was open. Winston was breaking out of like 2 sacks on everyplay, giving his WRs like 10 seconds to get open, and they still couldn’t and since Dirk told him only to make safe plays he just eventually would take the sacks. This is an elite defense and I wouldn’t actually be worried about this until I hear Dirk throwing Winston under the bus, that’s pretty much the most unprofessional think you can do as a head coach unless it’s truly called for – and it wasn’t.
Pitiful performance by Dirk and while I wasn’t concerned before if Dirk is trying to deflect from his terrible coaching job by blaming Winston then the Bucs should just fire him now since he’s in over his head.

Kind of blame to pass around…for looking like a pee wee team, not losing today! They were never in a million years going to beat the Broncos, they have NOWHERE near enough talent to pull that off! However, the few good players we have need to grow the hell up and realize this ain’t sandlot football, JAMEIS! Regressed is kind and Sims needs to be sat down, can’t run and his hands aren’t good enough to be third down back!

Heck, I noticed Jameis trying to get Sims to toss the ball back to him with quite a bit of beer in me. I was surprised the announcers didn’t say anything about it. I really like Jamie’s as the QB for the Bucs but he needs to get it in his head that this isn’t backyard sandlot ball. That was not smart football at all.

Lost a lot of respect today for Coach Koetter. He quit on his team. He hit the nail on the head when he said he is the one that has to fix the culture. Not the way to fix it, coach. I’m going to try to not quit on you and start thinking about the draft and a new head coach that doesn’t quit on his team and the fans.

RTG – One of the greatest plays in Bucs history was Warrick Dunn pitching the ball to Shaun King in that exact same situation, which lead the Bucs to a victory against the Rams.
I seriously wonder how many of these so called Bucs fan have ever actually watched a game.

To me this kind of thing happens when you basically confine a coaching search to one guy.
I just don’t think a first class organization does that.
And his big alleged saving grace was continuity with Winston. That ain’t working.
Ill conceived hire IMO with predictable results. I just hope he doesn’t ruin Jameis.

Busteis wants to be the hero too much. Forces too many throws, makes too many bad decisions. He needs to learn the 5 yard checkdown can be his friend, especially with his poor accuracy in medium range throws.

cometowin2 – If this is indeed correct, if Dirk really did throw Winston under the bus, then I agree. I don’t agree about culture of any of that nonsense, the team needs talent in the defensive backfield and a 2nd WR, if they had that suddenly the “culture” wouldn’t be an issue.
But man if Dirk really did call out Winston when he’s punting on 4th and 6 at the Broncos 46 down by 3 scores with 6 mins left, then he shouldn’t be headcoach and that mindset is probably why he’s never been a headcoach. You don’t throw your QB under the bus when your playcalling was terrible, your defense was giving up 3rd and longs, you’re racking up over 100 yards in penalties and quitting on your team with nearly 7 mins left in the 4th quarter. I’m really hoping this is typical Joe Bucs Fan reporting and hoping it’s completely inaccurate.

I think this guy is a better offensive coordinator than he is a head coach. The offense has regressed and he has the same quarterback. The decision to start Simms as running back is his decision and I don’t think it’s a good one. Simms is a liability in the backfield on running downs. We can keep blaming players in Tampa while they go to other teams and shine. That is at the core of the losing culture. A leader that blames those under him is not truly a leader. Smith took ownership of the defensive problems we were having which is what Koetter should do.

dusthty – Evans is fantastic, you’re completely wrong on that, he’ll end the year as one of the best WR’s in the NFL. But as far as the rest of the talent you’re right. Brate was a UDFA for a reason, VJAX is doing his best Roddy White impersonation, Humphries is still developing, but is a 3rd down slot guy even at his best (which isn’t a diss). Losing ASJ because he’s a dope really hurts this team more than people think.

This is the reason this coach has lost his team. If he stop hiring his reject buddies to coach and get some coaches,that want to be here. This half of coach need to look in the mirror and quit calling out player’s in the media. If he had won a super bowl,they would respect him. Has anyone asked why he had not been selected as a head coach in the past. This coach has never called out his safety or kicker in the media. Reading through some of the comments, I’m curious … Did we all watch the same ball game? What I saw was an OLine that couldn’t run block OR pass block to save its’ tail end, and that tried their best to get their QB killed. I saw an offense with zero running game, only 2 (undersized) TEs and tall (but slow) WRs who couldn’t get open if the Denver secondary had gone on vacation to Hawaii. I saw a 2nd year QB who still has a tendency to hold the ball too long trying to make things happen and who continues to struggle with accuracy. Also saw a DLine that played its’ heart out against the SB champs even though they were down to only 2 regular starters (McDonald & Gholston) plus 4 back-ups. And oh ya, I saw a secondary that still isn’t getting the job done. That’s not on the coaches … Bucs simply don’t have the horses to compete right now against these better teams. Far too many injuries to key players for one thing, plus they had significant holes to start with (like at safety?). If they can get some key folks healthy, they might (?) be able to break even this year, but that’s a big if.

I understand the point you are making about Winston trying to make a play against a very good defense. However, Winston’s very first pass was intercepted. There was no pressure on him and two guys were actually open. He threw it to neither of them and it went right to Talib. That was 100% on him. There was no pressure and it was his first pass of the game. The second interception Winston had no pressure either and just threw a bad pass. These two mistakes early in the game lead to 14 points for the world champion Denver Broncos. If we were to ask any NFL fan, head coach or player what would be the worst case nightmare scenario you could face when playing Denver’s Super Bowl caliber defense? What Jamie’s did today by spotting them 14 points at the beginning of the game would be an obvious answer.

The interceptions were not because of great defense, they were both horribly inaccurate and forced throws. Punting is ok sometimes if the alternative is an almost certain turnover.

I didn’t expect to win the game against the Broncos but I did expect that kind of performance from Winston. The pressure he got in the Arizona game was NOTHING compared to Denver’s pressure. His inaccuracy should be a sign to DK that he should call more screens and short passes with Jameis. Would love to see where we would be right now if we would have traded the #1 pick last year to get more picks, this team needed it after Lovie gutted the team. I think Glennon should have gotten the job with the numbers he put up. They weren’t great but they showed he could protect the ball at least. Can’t wait until JW gets more time under his belt to see if he was worth the pick, so far I say NO. We sure could have used extra picks at this point.

Pittsburgh pretty much always confines their coaching search to 1 guy… seems to work out for them.
Anyone who thought the Bucs were going to compete with Denver, really needs to get off the meds.
This team is a season away from competing and all the vitriol from the fans is understandable considering the recent past.
The coaching carousel is not the answer. As much as it socks, we need to have some patience to see if this crew can get it done.

I for one am not dismissing Winston yet. I completely understand that he has just finished his 20Th game in the NFL. My only point is regarding this particular game. It was already going to be extremely difficult for this offense to score points against Denver’s defense. To open the game with two horrible passes that lead to 14 points for Denver was absolutely the worst nightmare scenario you could imagine. Also… Denver’s defense early in the game did nothing to cause those horrible passes. Those were 100% on Winston.
Everything after that made perfect sense with how Denver’s defense took over. That’s exactly what they are designed you to do as a defense. They try to put you in a position where you have to pass the football in order to catch up and then they feast with their pass rush. Winstons early turnovers just made it that much easier on them. He did this at FSU. The Seminoles were good enough to come back in the second half on the teams they played. He learned today that the last defence on this planet you can do that too and get away with it is the Denver Broncos defense. In short, Winston made an already difficult task for his offensive line impossible to accomplish especially considering that Doug Martin did not even play and Charles Sims cannot be a featured running back.

I’m not at all ready to throw the towel in on Koetter. In fact, I think he’s actually going to be very successful. I hope that is with us. JW has siply been reckless. He has taken very few sacks which has the look of a dominant O Line. That hasn’t been the case. The O Line has been decent. Nothing more. The fact is JW is forcing passes and making terrible decisions. He’s missing plays right before his eyes by keying on Evans. Evans is definitely our guy to go to but if the defense takes him away, then you have to go to the mismatches and there were several today. Hump should have had a big day and he had times that he was wide open. JW needs to sometimes accept a sack or throw the ball away and not give the opposition a short field on a pick. It’s his second year but JW doesn’t seem to be progressing as we all had hoped. Not giving up on him either but I expect much more out of him protecting the ball and recklessness is unacceptable.

I could copy and paste every one of your comments into each and every season since Gruden was dumped and you’d never be able to distinguish any season from any other based on fan comments. This is has become an annual ritual for Bucs fans. Offseason hope followed by anger, disappointment, despair and hopelessness. Every. single. year.
I still maintain that the Glazer boys are doing things behind the scenes in their basements to bring a curse on this franchise. Nothing else except a curse at the very top can explain this. After today I will not post on this site again. It just angers me every time I read stupidity. I mean I can’t believe there posters on this site still saying we should have stuck with Mike Glennon. Like come on bro really Mike stinking Glennon he sucks get that through your head!!! Secondly people acting like before the season we didn’t know what the problems of the buccaneers would be. And a lot of them were major if’s going into to the season.
Would Doug Martin do what he did last year and stay healthy? Answer:NO
Would our safeties be our downfall of the team? Answer:Yes
Would not drafting a wide receiver hurt Jameis and this offense? Answer: Yes
Would Gerald McCoy finally stay healthy for 16 games? Answer:NO
Would are offense of line be better? Answer: NO
And these are just some of the question the bucs had coming into the season and so far into the season and they’ve all have been answered and not the answers we wanted in the season.
And I truly believe Jameis Winston is trying to do to much with the football. I’m not making excuses for the kid it is what it is. Jameis has to score every single time time he gets the ball because the defense is that bad. And to be honest with you the bucs kinda looking like the colts where if Andrew Luck or Jameis don’t throw the ball 40 to 60 times a game their team is going to lose. Because neither have a running game or a defense that can stop teams from scoring more than 28 to 35 points a game.

Back to yesterday’s game plan for offense. Just terrible,awful offensive play calling. And once again koetter is setting up Jameis Winston to fail. Can anybody tell me on this site why the bucs play calling was so predictable yesterday. I mean I’m 19 and even knew when the bucs was going to pass or throw the ball. Then it seemed like almost every play was slow developing routes being ran the WR’s when we all know in order to beat a defense like Denver you need quick timing plays then when their not expecting it hit em over the top for a big game mixed in with a run hear or there.

The turnovers are resulting from him trying to press to make big plays. With the lack of running in this offense her doesn’t have much choice. We can’t just go 3 and out and let the defense get the ball back. Notice none of the turnovers have come while we are leading in a game except the rams fumble. I’ll live with three picks as long as he keeps moving the ball down field.

#3 just played horribly. There is no way to sugar coat. It’s not saying he’s going to suck as a QB…it’s simply stating the fact. NO team in the NFL is good enough to spot the defending SB champs two TD’s on two horrible turnovers.
Until he learns to protect the ball better #3 will not be judged as a good much less great QB. He’s motivated, he’s smart, and he’ll eventually get it. In the meantime he’s going to have some real growing PAINS which will effect us all.
TBBF mentioned penalties and they simply MUST stop for us to have a chance at winning a game, especially against quality teams like Denver. For the second week in a row we gave up a 3rd and forever because of a moronic penalty at the back end of our defense.
Is Jonathan Banks that horrible of an athlete. I’m ready to see him get a shot at safety. He won’t bring the lumber like Dashon Goldson or Kam Chancellor but his CB skills mean he can at least cover on the back end. Perhaps he could also come up and fill the middle.
As Buc fans are we simply cursed to watch teams…rookie QB’s and all..simply play pitch and catch over the middle. For heaven’s sake…just put a freaking blocking sled out on the field in the middle…that would at least take up some space…our defense in the middle of the field is literally invisible.

agree with Defense rules
lack of a running game hurt the offense.
not switching to Rodgers was puzzling as was the Sims play to get a first down.
think Qb sneak had a better chance of getting the yard or Rodgers.
Now the regression of the offensive line is puzzling,Both Sims and Martin were
only getting 3.4 yards a carry before Martin’s injury.They seem happy with Pamphile,but the only other change Dotson who has had his share of penalties.
Was the good running game a product of the extra blocking that Pamphile provided?Sweezy starting the year out on rehab has also hurt,how could this happen?
I thought Denver also took Humphries out of the game plan pretty much but we were still in the game and defense was giving us a chance early.After the second pic the game changed ,no running game and Winston forced to pass.
at times there were open receivers but Jameis was too busy trying to avoid
rush to see them.He has to stop putting us in a hole early to stay within the gameplan.
Whats alarming to me is how many players we need to make this a competitive team.One or two drafts will not fill all the holes on this team.
We need free agents that are on the field day one.Safeties,corners, running backs,wide receiver,D-line help are just some of the needs.

I was at game , to see Broncos did not know much about Bucs , Asked guy next to me who Bucs had for 2nd QB , I said #3 is not fast and arm is less than great.
Guy said he the Bucs Franchise Lovie Smith made him first pick in NFL 2015
I was shaking my head rest of game. Broncos showed rest of league how to stop him, I sure he will bust and take team down 2 years before they get rid of him.

Koetter is the play caller, he need to design and call plays that gets his WRs open. The passing tree is bare in Tampa. We run a few routes and hope our WRs can beat one on one or double coverage. We don’t confuse defenses or try to catch them off guard. We call a pass play and hope that our WR can beat the coverage. If he can’t Jameis is stuck having to make a difficult decision. Should he take the sack, or force it into a tight window. I’m ok with Jameis trying to make a play. My biggest criticism of Glennon was that he looked like he was scared. He constantly fell over at the slightlest pass rush. And never took chances. I love that Winston has the balls to throw into any coverage. No it doesn’t work out all the time, but sooner or later he will know what he can and can’t get away with in the NFL.
It doesn’t help that our play caller calls vanilla pass plays, asking the WRs to constantly beat their man in one on one situations. Evans is 50% at beating his one on one match up, and VJ is maybe 20%. Our guys are not fast or quick, they are big and slow. Give them some route combinations to help them get open. There are only so many curls, posts, and out routes a WR can run before the defense knows exactly what you are doing. Dirk, you need to do a better job. As well as everyone on offense. They all need to do more. Get open more, be more accurate with the football, sustain your blocks longer.
This is a very tough stretch hopefully our boys can rebound.
