Father Dungy Explains How The Bucs Can Win
October 1st, 2016Joe is so damn sick of all this “culture” talk, regarding the Buccaneers’ losing ways.
Dirk Koetter started it last week, but the media — local and national — has taken it to extreme levels.
Everybody is happy to weigh in. That includes Father Dungy, the Hall of Fame coach and Bucs icon who did all he could to get the Bucs to draft Marcus Mariota.
Father Dungy joined WDAE-AM 620 this week and said Koetter was on the money when he said it’s the “culture” that needs to change.
“It was learning how to win and learning how to not just play on Sunday afternoons at 1 o’clock, but how to practice, how to support each other in the locker room, how to support each other in the media, how to be a positive part of the community,” Dungy said. “And I remember Derrick Brooks coming to me after I kind of said that in my first speech to the team and him saying, ‘Hey, tell us how we’re going to win games. All that’s great but how are we going to win?'”
“It took our players a while to learn that’s how you win — by doing all those things the right way and being on top of all the details. It took us 3/4 of a year, actually. And our players got it. My second year you could see the culture changed. It was different.”
What’s most frustrating is teams every year are able to flip their culture in the right direction with new head coaches.
Look at the 2014 head coaching class in the NFL. First-time head coaches Bill O’Brien and Mike Zimmer had fast success without quality starting quarterbacks. But Lovie Smith and Ken Whisenhunt, for example, proved incompetent.
Koetter should able to get the Bucs headed in the right direction without magic beans, especially with a strong offensive line and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. There’s also enough talent around elsewhere to leave Bucs fans upllifted entering the offseason.
No excuses.
You can hear the full audio of Dungy below.

Before I read the article I already know the answer: “If they had MY Defense”

The turn around begins with a shocking win tomorrow! Let’s go!

Giants trying out Donte Whitner. He can’t be any worse than the bums at safety now. At least he’s been to a Pro Bowl. Only way Conte and Tandy see one is on tv or buying a ticket.

I just have to say after looking at this site everyday for a very long time this has to be the most negative site out there. It is always pointing out who we lost, how are coaches suck, calling our stadium names etc… no wonder all the negative nannies comment on every article.

Sorry dungy.
No way bucs win this game any way.
Ndog call us negative all you want and complain but reality is reality and the bucs don’t have the horses to compete with the defending champs.

Tired of hearing about the culture change to. If they can’t show it and stop talking about it because it’s getting nauseating
October 1st, 2016 at 12:47 pm
The “talking” is coming from the media. Koetter made one remark and the media (Roy, Jenna) won’t let it go.

Even Dungy’s version of Tampa 2 wouldn’t work in today’s NFL because the rules have been modified to favor the passing game and the big hits over the middle have been outlawed. John Lynch would be reviled like Vontaze Burfict.
In this era, any halfway decent NFL QB can pick apart a zone defense when given 3 to 5 seconds because the defenders are handcuffed. When QBs get longer than that, like they did in Lovie’s pass-rushless version of the Tampa 2, any NFL QB could light up the scoreboard like the 4th of July.

I can say something positive about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and that is that they are an NFL franchise in Tampa and there are numerous cities that can’t claim that. There, that is a positive statement. I will avoid commenting on talent, coaching, execution and the final scores so as to avoid the negativity. I mean, I would much rather be positive about this team than negative but for crying out loud, the team just does not provide results to be proud of or positive about. This site is not so negative as it is realistic. If the “Bucs can do no wrong crowd” does not like it, then simply do not come to JBF for you Bucs news and talk.

Can’t believe we are STILL talking about the culture in Tampa. Maybe some of the players are just happy to be getting a paycheck and don’t care about winning, but some DO want to win. We just need to STOP turning the ball over as much as we are and we will start to win, simple. We CANNOT keep giving the other teams points EVERY week and expect to win. The defense is NOT as bad as they have looked the past 2 weeks, they have just been on the field for too much time. They have gotten stops when we needed them to in the Atlanta and LA games. Just stop spotting the other team 7 (or more) points EVERY week and watch what happens. Things WILL get better. If Jameis can keep more of these drives alive by hitting wide open players (when he has the chance) the defense will have more of a chance to rest. Go BUCS!

You change the culture by winning. You do that by winning on offense, defense and special teams. We are missing a pass rush and missed xp and fg which leave points off the board.
October 1st, 2016 at 1:44 pm
I’m positive if we show up half ass on defense like we have the last two games we’ll get beat up and get our lunch money taken. This is a team that out physicaled Carolina, who’s spanked us the last several years. They took Cams heart in that Super Bowl
October 1st, 2016 at 1:51 pm
For those of you complaining about my comment what does Blount, Steve Young, Michanel Bennett, and Raheem along with all the other past players and coaches have to do with THIS team? Talk and complain about this players and coaches all you want but this former players and coaches have nothing to do with this team.
October 1st, 2016 at 1:51 pm
@ America’s Commenter: With the pass rush we had back then NO Qb had time to “pick the D apart” With 3 to 5 seconds as you say even I could pick apart a defense. Smh
October 1st, 2016 at 1:55 pm
Yeah SB, how much was it Dungys system or the HOF players playing it. Get tired of the system talk with Ronde. He was such a cerebral player, I think he would have been great in anyone’s defense.

Koetter should able to get the Bucs headed in the right direction without magic beans, especially with a strong offensive line and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.- says Joe
JW needs to be on top of his game though. Knowing where the line of scrimmage is at the end of the game and trying to win the game is leadership. Is not about talking to his teammates rather the action on the field will win their approval and games.
JW’s mistake was as bad as David’s deflating ego after the first defensive penalty on the first game of the season last year. Smh

As long as we stop turning the ball over. An tipping it to the defenses. ( Sims ) already did that twice this year. Once against the cards, and rams.
October 1st, 2016 at 3:16 pm
No way that I could Possibly disagree with you Chris
October 1st, 2016 at 3:22 pm
When I originally said “My Defense” I was talking about the players not the system. Although Wyche drafted some of them.
October 1st, 2016 at 3:43 pm
Lets see year Andy, Denver’s got a 6th rd QB who is playing L9ights out ball. Kingfish..But we’s Bucs got a No 1 pick who throws touchdowns yet leads the league in turnovers. And you guys wonder why Denver invested so heavy in Defense? And now..KC’s hits from the 60’s..Rick Nelson on the turntable with his floating hit…….Dream.
October 1st, 2016 at 4:10 pm
This is so stupid….It’s not a culture change. The culture has already changed. These guys want it!
The defense is the single thing holding this team back. The talent is there the coaching is not.
I love the Dirk Koetter hire, and I don’t want him to go anywhere, however it’s on HIS shoulders to get Mike Smith in line. If not I know Licht will cut the cord sooner than later. I have said many times on here our next DC is already on staff.
When you watch our Db’s…everyone is always confused. Nobody knows when to break or let coverage roll to the safeties because OC’s in todays football know how to pick it apart. There is always a spot between the corners and the safeties.
I would think an Offensive Coordinator would have GREAT insight as to what woks well on defense. Looks he doesn’t like to see as a play caller. I refuse to believe Koetter cannot fix this. I believe he is hesitant on going into Smith’s office and being real with his ass.
I know if the defense doesn’t get fixed it will RUIN the culture and optimism within the team. It’s lost hope at that point when you know every single week your going to give up 28 plus points.
October 1st, 2016 at 5:25 pm
The culture has not changed there sir. Only winning consistently changes a..losing culture. You can tell yourself we have changed alls you like. The win column says different.
October 1st, 2016 at 5:35 pm
What’s with the Father Dungy crap? Informed and long-suffering fans would like to know, Joe. Go Tampa Bay Tomorrow!!
October 1st, 2016 at 9:32 pm
The great words of wisdom from Father Dungy. The man who couldn’t get to the Super Bowl when he was here.
October 1st, 2016 at 9:36 pm
I concur with the diagnosis offered by Chris. Ronde Barber saw many coaches/systems come and go, and even as he aged and his skills declined, everyone could see that he gave more effort than any other player out there on the field. To take the discussion in a different direction: Does Barber and/or John Lynch have any ambitions to have any role running a team? There might be an opening with the Bucs’ front office, if things keep going the way they are. I’m not advocating that they be hired as a GM tomorrow, but they are relatively young and could work their way up as a front office executive. The Bucs could do/have done worse!

What changes a losing culture is winning. You have to execute and believe. No turnovers and stupid penalties and things will turnaround. When is the last time we lost a game and did not have multiple turnovers and a high amount of penalties?
October 2nd, 2016 at 11:42 am
Tampa Bay fans never gave Dungy credit for being their best overall coach. Yes, Gruden won a Superbowl. But the Culture change. The actual impedance for establishing a tough winning team started with Tony. The owners could have let him stay and just brought in another O coordinator. But for some reason, They did not want to wait on Dungy. after all he did. Karma is a mother. Dungy went on to win his Superbowl You can’t deny fate. Joe makes light of Dungy calling him Father Dungy. Well, he is that to the Bucs. We were the laughing stock of the NFl prior to him coming here. With the exception of that one yr following his departure, we have not been right since. Its like we are the kids of Isreal. Destined to search in the desert for..40 yrs. Search on Bucs..Search on!
