Drop Watch: Season Total Rises To Six

The NFL does NOT provide official stats on drops. Unreliable stat-geek outfits do, but Joe doesn’t trust their data.
And after the seemingly countless drops by Mike Evans last year, Joe entered 2016 determined to chronicle drops and avoid confusion.
WEEK 3 vs. Los Angeles – 2 drops plus 1 “bonus screwup”
Extraordinarily costly drops in this game, led by Charles Sims’ juggle with 2:32 remaining in the first half. Sims couldn’t squeeze the short throw out of the backfield to the left, and then he got drilled, leading to a Mark Barron interception.
Vincent Jackson gets the next one, his third of the year. V-Jax was alone at the 10 yard line with :54 remaining the game. He was square to the ball as the high throw hit both his hands. V-Jax didn’t even have to jump.
**Bonehead bonus play goes to tight end Brandon Myers, who forgot where he was on a short second-half throw to the right sideline. He floated out of bounds and caught the ball.
WEEK 2 vs. Arizona; 3 drops plus 1 “maybe.”
Charles Sims gets the first drop, with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter. Yes, the short pass to Sims was tipped a the line of scrimmage, but Sims got two paws on the ball and was looking right at it. He couldn’t squeeze it and re-tipped, which led to an interception.
Vincent Jackson returns for his second drop of the season with 2:12 remaining in the third quarterback. V-Jax went up for a 20-yard throw over the middle at the 4 yard line. He got two hands on it, squeezed it and didn’t hold on.
Mike Evans is issued a drop for his two hands on a well-thrown ball from America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, with 7:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. No question here after the film is studied. Evans is hit in stride on the right flank. The defender did not break up that pass.
**Possible drop goes to Evans with 2:16 remaining in the third quarter. It’s a slant pass. Video, including the All-22 coach’s film, is inconclusive.
WEEK 1 vs. Falcons – Joe assigned the first drop of the year to Vincent Jackson, and only one drop for the game.
It came with 59 seconds remaining in the first half. The Bucs were on the Falcons’ 41-yard line, and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, dropped back to pass with no rush. Jackson, on the right flank, broke inside and then took his route outside to the sideline. Jameis put the ball on the money at the 25-yard line. The ball entered Jackson’s gut and he couldn’t squeeze it.
After the play, the TV cameras caught V-Jax giving sort of an “it’s-on-me” wave back toward the huddle.
Bad drop, for sure.
It surely wasn’t a great game for V-Jax. Receivers coach/offensive coordinator Todd Monken said V-Jax was at fault on the miscommunication that led to Jameis’ interception.

I’d love to see a hit list. Track how many times Jaboo gets hit in the pocket. If this guy ever gets 4 seconds to throw, its over. He throws 3 TDs with “the best 3tech in the league” draped all over him just imagine if his jersey was kept clean all game. Imagine that….

Every Wide/Out in this league drops passes, it’s a part of the game! I don’t care, if they catch every pass and lose please tell me what difference does it make? You sound like the Realist talking about not getting blowed out but still losing the game! 13 games to play with 8 more games to win to show improvement ove the last REGIME!!

This kind of crap doesn’tdo anyone any good. We couldalso pot to over throwing a wider open Jackson with about 20 seconds to go. Doesn’t do anyone any good. They lost. Move on. AsBelichekdsays, “it’s on to Denver.”
What crap? Drops are always on the minds of fans at different points during a season. They want to know who has what. And that cuts both ways. Around Thanksgiving, people could be moaning about a guy with 8 drops, but in reality he’s got 5. At least fans will now have a frame of reference. –Joe

The overthrow to Vincent Jackson with 20 secs left hurt but after looking back at the game the VJax drop on the 10 yd line with 52 secs left in the game also hurt. That was the play prior to the Sims run where he didn’t get out of bounds.

The drops have NOTHING to do with us losing 2 games, turnovers are what cost us those wins. If we were NOT constantly giving the other teams points we would be 2-1 right now. Even without the turnovers in the Arizona game we probably would have lost that game due to Winston’s inaccuracy. He was all over the place with the football that day. We are just not getting bounces to go our way the last 2 games. Once we stop turning the ball over we will start to win these close games because of DK and the offense. This is going to be a long season though until Jameis gets more accurate with the football. Drives are ending when we should have had a first down, but JW overthrows a wide open player 5 yards from the LOS. It’s getting hard to watch IMO.

@DB55- never said he sucks, just pointing out the over throwing of open receivers is a pretty consistent thing just like the drops.

Agreed, I too would like to know how many passes have been overthrown in the first 3 games. Seems like it has been a lot of them though. Every week I keep saying he needs to throw short passes to get into a rhythm, like in the Atlanta game. It gets easier for him to hit longer passes once he completes a few short ones. The shorter passes are the ONLY reason he is 60% for the year, otherwise he would ONLY be about 52% (give or take). I hate the fact that I don’t think we will beat the Broncos OR Panthers because after how he looked in the Atlanta game I thought we could beat anyone. Go BUCS!

The drops do have an impact on the game and I am glad Joe is taking the time to chronicle drops and avoid confusion like there was last year. Whatever Mike Evans is doing is paying off. All they have to do is not turn the ball over and control penalties and we will start to win some games.

Did the pass rush effect the throw causing the QB to make a bad throw?
Bucs fans clearly do not watch the games joe, they need your professional wisdom and stat report to tell if winston sucks or no.

This article is about as dumb as it gets!! If you actually watch the game you will know who the “real players” are, you won’t need a tabulation of bad plays. I will never click on one of these “Drop Watch” articles again, it’s not worth my time.

I think Evans deserves a little more credit for getting rid of the KY on his hands Joe. U ragged on Mikey all of last year, and deservingly so. But this year he looks like a total diffrent guy out there, (the guy most of us knew he had in him) I think him and Humphries have been one 9f the few bright spots so far this season, and look to be having career years for the both of them. I love the development of Adam this year, he has exceeded expectations so far.

whats clear to me,under threat of pressure Jameis hasn’t been as confident or precise on his throws.Trent dilfer said there was 15 off target passes in Arizona,Bucs said there were 6 in Rams gam,so that’s 21, more than three times the drops.
Koetter and staff need to devise a gameplan to make their young QB more comfortable in the pocket.Since we have only one all round tight end Koetter
should consider the use of a max protect alignment.

Jameis should just stop throwing to vjax. I KNOW that can’t happen but it seems like every time he throws to Vincent 9 times out of 10 something bad happens. Either a misthrow, dropped pass, or interception.

thinking about Kurt Warners advice to Jameis and some of the passes that were dropped .Wonder if if he put a little touch on some of passes ,his recievers might have a better chance to catch it.High and hard works in
baseball but a little air underneath some of his passes would help his receivers get underneath them.

VJAX has always had Jameis’s back, a good captain and friend would not desert his teammate when things are not going that well,especially when Jameis should have completed the pass at goal line.

Sims needs to hold onto the ball. Dude is responsible for two INTs in two weeks. Although I did hear Dilfer say Winston shouldn’t have thrown that pick 6 pass against that defense. Either way, hold onto the ball!
