Safeties Blew It
September 26th, 2016Why did the Bucs, once again, make the slug known as Case Keenum look like Cam Newton? One analyst said it is simple: Blame the safeties of the Bucs.
Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com believes the first score by the Rams, a 44-yard pass from Keenum to Brian Quick, was squarely due to Bucs safeties possibly staring at the cheerleaders.
Cornerback Alterraun Verner was playing an outside technique, and the Bucs safeties blew the deep inside help letting Quick get open on the post.
Joe understands the safeties are a big irritant with Bucs fans, right along with watching America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, float passes over Vincent Jackson’s head.
Yeah, the Bucs probably do need to upgrade that position, but no more so than getting a wide receiver and a pass rusher.
Ah, nothing like draft talk in September, eh? This is what happens when you have a locker room full of losers.
September 26th, 2016 at 12:43 pm
Blame whoever had them on the roster to begin with.
September 26th, 2016 at 12:44 pm
Joe- Why can’t it be just the simple fact that the safeties blew it in this game they are not ready for Mike Smith’s scheme yet or they are just not good enough and that is the simple explanation of why the Bucs lost to the Rams yesterday. Granted there are bigger issues but the play of the safeties was horrendous and it was obvious from the beginning and throughout the game that the Rams went after Chris Conte and it work virtually every time.

I’ll never give up on my team but man it get’s tough sometimes. Too many soft arse players that can’t close the deal or display the necessary killer instinct. I feel bad for Kwon and Winston…
For the idiots still calling out winston 62% 405 yds 3tds – in one game… Let me remind you that it would have taken a dungy offense 4 games to match those numbers.

NFL Bucs 2017 Draft WR, safety, TE!!!!!
September 26th, 2016 at 12:47 pm
Joe’s favorite GM drafted Tandy. Tandy f’ing sucks too.
September 26th, 2016 at 12:49 pm
why did reggie nelson not get an offer from the bucs???
September 26th, 2016 at 12:50 pm
We are not far enough removed from the Mark Dominic drafts to have enough talent in this roster. Period.
September 26th, 2016 at 1:00 pm
I think Mike Smith called a very good game as a play caller. Every major completion had our defenders beat or not follow their assignment. We did not allow many short-intermediate passes thanks to the play calling, despite the fact that our pass rush was yet again pedestrian despite dialing up some blitzes. Let’s face it, we are still very much needing on talent. I think we have good coaches that are putting players where they need to be. This also applies to offense. Jameis is still developing, but his accuracy needs to be better. WRs need to have sharper cuts.
September 26th, 2016 at 1:00 pm
Richardtyson FTW!!!
This team is obviously not complete. Did anybody believe they were? Or did we hope they have simply improved and show that at least we’re heading in the right direction.
You only get 2-3 draft picks that can make an impact and even that’s a 50-50 crapshoot. You have to count on some 4th rounders and later to help out and make up for the top choices that do not workout.
And so before last year Joe was gripping about how our OL will get #3 killed.
Licht retooled that OL into one of the best in the league but it required 2 top picks.
Our defensive pass rush and DB’s were both suspect heading into this year…so we have two rookies…one..VHG who looks very promising and one Spence who already has one sack but obviously has a way to go.
There are 22 positions to fill. Last year we had to fill about half of those spots maybe more.
So perhaps one of you geniuses can tell me how you draft 11-15 players in one or two years.
Licht has already hit on far more than he’s missed. We’re on the way but the growing pains have been tough. Some of us need to grow a pair…suck it up..and keep the freaking faith. We’re 3 games into the season with a young team that has seen a ton of turnover in the past two seasons.
OK say it with me now…I’m placing my hands on your computers to heal you…say it…c’mon now you can do it….I BELIEVE!!!
September 26th, 2016 at 1:11 pm
Between aguymissico and no pressure up front, safeties having balls thrown over their heads in the immortal words of ASJ the Bucs took a huge S!$@ on us.
September 26th, 2016 at 1:14 pm
According to my sources Gerald McCoy has been moved to strong safety
September 26th, 2016 at 1:17 pm
Conte isn’t an irritant he is incompetent. Maybe he was exposed to to much Lovie “gotta have turnovers” talk. He bites on every underneath route. Palmer moved him anywhere he wanted with his eyes. Conte was responsible for 2 TD passes in that AZ game. The back of the endzone throw he vacated his responsibility. If we had just the most average I’m gonna stay deep and not take any chances safety we probably don’t give up what are we up to now 500 yards in 14 plays. I say let the kid Smith play, he really couldn’t be any worse.
September 26th, 2016 at 1:29 pm
McCoy covering the fastest guy in football is just about the same as those 3 crappy safeties trying, licht is a horrible GM and would have mclown starting on his fantasy team
September 26th, 2016 at 1:44 pm
I would not place the needs of safety, pass rusher, and wide receiver on the same level. It’s safety, period.
Yes, those are the top three needs of this team, but with Ayers hurt and Spence still maturing, I’d like to see the people on the roster develop first (Smith and Gholston chief among them). Wide-out depth is important, too, but that can be attacked in so many different ways.
Safety is, by FAR, the BIGGEST need on this team. We’ve been starting players that are AT BEST suited for special teams work. That position has been ABYSMAL for years. It has to be our number one need.
September 26th, 2016 at 1:56 pm
Along with safety, defensive end and wide receiver, don’t forget kicker might be on that list. Is it too early to start talking about drafting Myles Garrett
September 26th, 2016 at 2:04 pm
Best player available
September 26th, 2016 at 2:08 pm
Maybe we can be the Washington Redskins of 2015 and win the division, which might be shaping up to be the worst this year. If NO wins tonight, it’s like we’re all starting over next week.
Maybe Aguayo can calibrate his kicks a little to the right.
Finally, why are our safeties starting each play so close to the line of scrimmage?! We’re playing a double-under zone with nothing deep. How can corners release if there’s nothing deep?
September 26th, 2016 at 2:13 pm
Let’s not completely forget about Alterraun Verner, He highlighted the need for better Safeties!
September 26th, 2016 at 2:14 pm
They were terrible yesterday. I saw it first hand at the game. We had a chance at Von Bell in the draft but we took Aguayo. I was furious at the time but now I’m irate.
September 26th, 2016 at 2:21 pm
There was 1 player that rams have that can hurt us with explosive plays
Rams can run gurly 100 times and it wouldnt hurt us 1 bit
Have a corner cover travon austin all game long we would win 10 out 0f 10 times
Bad game plan mikey
September 26th, 2016 at 2:27 pm
Mark Barron, where are you when we need you ?
September 26th, 2016 at 2:27 pm
And how many Safeties have Jason Schit drafted?
September 26th, 2016 at 2:36 pm
There’s no question that the safety position could use an upgrade. However, if we ever put pressure on a QB, the need for elite safeties is no longer an issue.
@StPete- You don’t go 2-14 and 6-10 with a talented football team. We still have huge holes to fill and OBVIOUS depth issues. Spot on!
September 26th, 2016 at 2:39 pm
StPete, I can’t help but chuckle every time a Bucs fan (yourself very often) tries to throw reason into the JBF equation. What die-hard Bucs fan didn’t expect a rainbow as soon as Dirk Koetter took over for Lovie? Or maybe I should say when Dirk Koetter and Mike Smith took over for Lovie. We change coaches every 2 yrs, and only 5 current players drafted by the Bucs have been with us for 5 yrs or longer. We’ve got more ex-players drafted by the Bucs starting for other teams than that. Continuity on the Bucs isn’t a luxury, it’s non-existent. Judging from our W-L record these past 10 yrs, the revolving door obviously impacts team chemistry in a negative way. Bucs are a young team and they need to learn how to win. Apparently they also need some better players at a number of positions to make that happen.
September 26th, 2016 at 2:45 pm
i was and still am a 7-9 person but i wanted the 7-9 be on the come not scoring 30 points and losing to case friggin keenum, and blame a big portion on licht and CFL talent at safeties and smitty is a good DC and the players he has and what he is aking some to do either are doing their own thing which is what kwon said last week and/or just terrible
September 26th, 2016 at 2:46 pm
@Desanova … “why are our safeties starting each play so close to the line of scrimmage?!” I thought exactly the same thing at the game yesterday. Conte made 8 tackles altogether, and it seemed like most of them were right near the line of scrimmage. Even though Rams only threw deep 3 times, they hit on all 3, and 2 of those were huge. Safeties were nowhere to be found on those.
September 26th, 2016 at 2:56 pm
Does anybody have Sabby Piscotelli’s phone number?!!!!
September 26th, 2016 at 2:58 pm
Conte was the blame for the first one he was out of the game on tavon Austin’s touchdown. Conte’s play hasn’t pissed me off more than Verner and everyone else.
September 26th, 2016 at 3:07 pm
Sabby the greatest of all time?
I was watching last night and the first thing that went to my mind was the comment by Coach Koetter that Conte covered like a corner. I agree because Conte was just as bad as Verner. It seems to me that or rookie corner may be the best defensive back on the team right now.
September 26th, 2016 at 3:18 pm
Horrible safeties and no pass rush…
#awesome
September 26th, 2016 at 3:19 pm
I thought the Bucs had a defensive lineman chasing a receiver on the long touchdown all out blitz…..then I saw it was 37, omg, I have never seen a pro player run so slow. I think this defense needs speed at safety if they are going to blitz and leave one on one coverage…..wow can you say embarrassing
September 26th, 2016 at 3:59 pm
we need to draft in this order DE,WR,TE,S.. this season is over..
September 26th, 2016 at 4:10 pm
Hey JOE……is this worth a sniff by Jason “Second Round Unprofound” Licht?

September 26th, 2016 at 5:01 pm
CHRIS CONTE DOESN’T FIT IN ANYONE’S SCHEME BECAUSE HE IS HORRIBLE!!!! Lovie trash from Chicago. I would love to see us get Jabrill Peppers in the draft. Eric Berry is a FA after this year. I like Ryan Smith so I wanna see him develop. But this safety BS has got to end!!! Haven’t had a good one since Lynch which is a long freakin time
September 26th, 2016 at 5:40 pm
Single high saftey press coverage. Done with this crap. Verner and grimes will do fine in press and if you dont think throwing the timing off by hitting them on the line doesnt throw off the play, your nuts. They keep trying to do the same thing over and over and over…..that usually doesnt end with different results.
Im so over this crap already
September 26th, 2016 at 5:53 pm
conte, is not to blame——-youre asking him to do the work of safety and corner —-way too much….and with no pass rush forget it.
September 26th, 2016 at 6:33 pm
McDougald is also a FA after this year. So let’s go Jabrill Peppers round 1, WR in 2, TE 3 and sign Eric Berry. Verner, VH3, Jude-Adjei, Berry, Peppers, and possibly Grimes would be a dream. After next year trade GMC for a lot and pick up a dominate DT in round 1. I hate to look so far into the future but this is what I would like.
September 26th, 2016 at 7:31 pm
We’ll be in line for S Jamal Adams or DE Derek Barnett….around 10th or so. But we need a lot of help and wouldnt mind trading down for more picks. JUST AS LONG AS IT ISNT A KICKER!!!!!!
We’ve had some decent luck in the later rounds so trading down would probably work out pretty well for us.
September 26th, 2016 at 11:44 pm
D.Rod I know a safety is suppose to pick up receivers when they break routes and in certain schemes and Conte is always 10 yards behind
September 26th, 2016 at 11:46 pm
I would like to see Banks at S. I think he would be a good fit.
September 27th, 2016 at 8:05 am
#1–Knock off the musical employment chairs for HC/GM for 3 years effective this season.
#2-Earth to Mike Smith: let Johnathan Banks play. So what if you didn’t draft him. What little I saw in preseason was better than Conte is now. What have you got to lose? Kudos to you on the play of GMC, LVD, and Kwon Sunday!! They played SB level lights out.
#3-DK, the Hump is a terrific undrafted signing. Kudos to you and Licht.
#4-NFC South is its usual mess. Go Bucs!! 🙂
