George:
Until recently when the Rays and the Bolts flipped-flopped in their respective team’s fortunes, the Bolts average game attendance was often better than the Rays.
The Bolts also still hold the record for the largest NHL playoff game attendance.

Is that Carter Ashton, son of Brent? Either I’m getting really old or these players are looking really young, like high school yearbook photo young.

Mike:
You are correct in both accounts. The kid is a babyface. Joe’s met him. He looks 15.

Was the record set at Game 7 of the Cup when the Bolts beat the Flames? Best sporting event I have ever been to in my life.

I doubt it BigMacAttack, it was probably in 1996 when we played the Flyers in the old Thunderdome, now Tropicana Field. That place could hold almost 30K for hockey games.

Thanks for the background. From what I’ve read the hockey team’s ownership situation has been rather rocky. What gives w/ that? Or is the NHL just screwed up in general?

Our ownership is screwed up, but it should be settled soon. The NHL is giving Len Barrie to opportunity first to buy out Oren Koules, and the deadline is very soon. If he can’t come up with the $$$, Koules can buy out Barrie. The one thing they did right this offseason was give GM Brian Lawton the authority to make deals and signings without inteference from the 2 disputing owners. Last year was a revolving door of coaches and players, like they were running a fantasy hockey team. This year it’s much more settled down. If goalie Smith can stay healthy, we have improved the D and signed a top 6 forward in Alex Tanguay who will help Vinny 4 immensely.

Mike:
Len Barrie will not be the Bolts owner. In light of his shady financial past (which the NHL never did its homework on him) the league would never approve him as an owner.
