Seferian-Jenkins Talks Celebration

September 15th, 2016

seferian-jenkins2The good producers of Captain Morgan won’t be getting any more free advertising from Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

One might have thought the full-throttle, diving touchdown grab by ASJ on Sunday would have elicited quite a celebration by the man who once stood on a football and dropped a Captain Morgan pose after a touchdown catch, and who high-stepped to the end zone on opening day 2015 — with the Bucs trailing by five touchdowns.

No way, said ASJ last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

“I’m kind of done with my celebration days,” the 23-year-old tight end added. “I just wanted to celebrate with my teammates because those are the guys that have my back.

Asked what when through his mind when America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, launched him the bomb against Atlanta.

Simple question.

“No. 3 threw the me ball and I want him to keep throwing the me the ball and I better make this catch. That’s what I consciously thought,” ASJ said.

It was ASJ’s only catch of the game, but Dirk Koetter did trust him on the first possession, targeting him on third down. ASJ drew a pass interference call, but that didn’t satisfy his biggest fan, he said.

ASJ explained his mother greeted him after the game but was on him immediately about the details of that route and how a PI is good but he has to make the catch.

    Ha! Go get ’em, Mom!

Like what I’m seeing from ASJ this far. Keep going, man.

  2. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I like this. ASJ seems like he was a little immature in hte past, but he appears to be growing up.

  3. stpetebucsfan Says:

Americans love stories of redemption…guy screws up…comes back and atones and goes on to be successful.

ASJ appears to finally be headed in the right direction. Good for him!!!

Actually gives me more reason to root for him!

I think this is the year ASJ finally gets it and starts to mature, that’s what a great coaching staff can do for players. And ASJ has already been on record saying how much of a fan he is of Coach K and how he is a father figure to him. I still don’t think ppl realize how much of a weapon this guy can become in this offense. That’s why I never gave up on him, he means to much to this team, weither u see it or not. He has the potential to be Gronk like and become a top 3 TE in this league. Just ask the great HOF Tony Gonzales what he thinks of him. And Il leave it at that.

  5. tmaxcon Says:

maybe this young man finally got it with the extended playing time in Game 4 that was a very direct message sent from Koetter. I was very impressed with his catch obviously but even more impressed with his interview after the game. hopefully he is sincere and learned a tough lesson. only time will tell. good luck to him. i was hard on him for obvious reasons but let’s see what happens. no free passes go out and earn it young man. AZ would be a very good place for a coming out party!

  6. Patrick in VA Says:

I’m not sure about giving this guy a pass. It was just a few weeks ago that he was acting like a complete idiot. He catches a touchdown and he’s suddenly matured? I don’t buy it. I’m all for people turning it around and getting on track, but I need to see sustained maturity and solid play before I pull for him from a human interest standpoint. Obviously, as long as he’s on the team I want him to do well on the field. He’s got a long way to go and a lot to prove before I look at him as anything more than a me-first punk.

  7. K2 Says:

If our TEs and receivers can stay health…we are going to surprise a lot of teams. Go Bucs!

  8. pick6 Says:

i just don’t know….i was listening to ASJ on the radio and i kept thinking about Josh Freeman. The kid is built like he was made to be an elite football player, and he certainly knows how to say the right things, but there’s something a little hollow about the talking points…in the end, other things mattered to josh more than what he asserted on his radio show, even though he talked a good game.

i’m rooting for ASJ because he takes this offense to another level, but i’m not interested in his words at this point. as his QB says, “actions speak so loud you can’t even hear the words.” hoping ASJ acts the part of an elite player on and off the field moving forward

Sometimes putting a little trust in someone, despite recent issues, can do wonders for that person. It’s not like Koetter is asking ASJ to babysit his small children. We’re talking about throwing a football his way. A little trust was shown to him, and he did well with it. Now he’ll get a little more and more until full confidence is restored. That’s how it works.

  10. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

Also – about giving him a pass … hasn’t he already paid some price for the issues earlier in preseason? He got run from practice, and I’d guess he almost certainly got his hand slapped by Koetter/Licht or whoever for the Twitter stuff.

I’m a pretty big believer in, if you mess up, you pay a price, and you move on. I don’t think anyone is “giving him a pass,” I think it’s a case of Bucs fans glad to see he’s meaningfully contributing to the team and hoping for more.

  11. Patrick in VA Says:

@Ben in GA – That’s fine if you’re the coach or his parents. I’m talking about from a fan’s perspective. I’m just not ready to say that he’s reformed until he’s shown a steady pattern of good behavior and good decisions. I agree with Pick6 above, he says the platitudes that everyone is looking for but none of that is reflected in his actions. He got Joe all spun up when he was drafted but he’s delivered on none of that promise. I’m just looking for more than a nice press conference out of him before I say that he’s more than he’s proven himself to be over the course of his time here.

  12. astrobuc Says:

He was on the radio last night. Why they did not name that segment
    A S K, A S J is beyond me.

  13. Pickgrin Says:

A healthy, productive ASJ makes this offense downright dangerous. Lets just hope this guy stays out of the tub and on the path to redemption. The talent is there! We all saw the TD catch. There are not many TEs in this league who make that catch.

  14. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

Fair enough Patrick, and I agree, but that’s not really the point of the post. No one is saying he’s reformed, no one is saying they’re giving him a pass – simply that we hope this trend continues. It’s a step in the right direction for ASJ to stop the celebrations that he, and guys like GMC, get flagged for in the No Fun League.

  15. rrsrq Says:

I hope he keeps a part of that showmanship and edge, it’s called personality, something we haven’t had on this team in a while

  16. Patrick in VA Says:

@Ben – That’s true and, if he is on a better path, this game and his actions since then would be steps in the right direction. I’ll give ya that.

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Patrick

I don’t think anybody can dispute your point. ASJ needs to back this up with CONTINUED good behavior.

BTW My post is not a result of his TD catch although I agree with your fundamental point that some fans would love him no matter his personality as long as he catches TD’s.

As Tmax can attest…he and I have this debate every month or two…I do not like to root for turds no matter how talented. I like to root for good guys.

My post is the result of ASJ’s post game remarks and this post just adds to it.

  18. TheShaz Says:

IMHO he has taken the 1st step on the path of redemption, and the step was in the right direction.

It is a grueling 16 game season, there are 15 more game with the hope of more beyond in the playoffs.

If ASJ stays on this path, he will be redeemed in mine and many other Bucs fans.

That was in John Gruden’s own words “One hell of a catch”

  19. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I like what you said rsq. Pete I’ll say this as long as the turd side doesn’t affect the game ima ride wit you. The minute it does ima curse you thru the screen. Might sound shallow h3ll maybe it is. I think I’d sale my soul right now to see Famous hoist that Lombardi. As youngster we knew Tyson was a knuckle head we loved him tho. He represented champions spit to so many in my community. Now as I grew older and matured in my thinking I honestly wanted Holiyfield to win and he did. I Love Famous but I cannot not love that knuckle head if he happens to be a member of this team.

  20. tnew Says:

heard the interview. His tweets and his interview don’t match up. I would advise him to close his twitter and do more interviews. He was absolutely engaging. One thing is obvious, he has some Iverson in him. He loves to play the game but really doesn’t like practice.

I will also give him huge credit for acknowledging that how Koetter treated him earlier this year made him a better player. Most players wouldn’t do that. Especially this quick. The previous regime really threw him out to the wolves with the injury reports last year.

  21. Bculaw Says:

I listened to quite a bit of his interview last night. He is a likable guy on air, and so much different than I expected him to be based on his prior bone-headed conduct. He was engaging, well-spoken, shared some great personal insight about himself and his teammates, and seemed to be an all-around good guy. If he cleans that stuff up, and continues to make plays, he will not only be a great contributor to the team, but will also be a guy the community could embrace.

  22. tnew Says:

It would be impossible not to like his personality after listening to the segment from this week, btw. He came across as genuine, caring, loves his Mom, loves his team mates, loves his coach. Hard to call any of that a “turd” Its not like he’s been suspended, arrested, suspected of any real malfeasance. He has been unaware of time and place.

He celebrated the first touchdown of his professional career.
Used the ball as a prop.
Got frustrated and went Nolan Ryan over a “bad spot” (this was by far the worst one)
    Acted stupid on social networks.

Count me on the boat of he might just be a player that needed a coach to look him in the eye and tell him like it was. It might not have ever happened.

  23. Dave Says:

If Peterson locks up on Evans all game, I look for VJax, ASJ, and Simms to see a lot of balls
