Marpet: Refs Made Right Call On Wrong Guy
September 14th, 2016Now how will the legions of NFL stat nerds process this inside information?
Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network yesterday, Ali Marpet talked about the first-quarter holding call whistled on him on a 2nd-and-5 play from the Bucs’ 13 yard line.
“I’m saying they got the wrong number. It was Donovan [Smith],” Marpet said. “Watch the play 1,000 times, there’s no way it was holding on me. There was no holding action.”
Donovan Smith was on the airwaves with Marpet and confessed.
“It probably should have been called on me, and I did think it was called on me,” Smith said.
Joe watched the All-22 film of the play and clearly there was no hold on Marpet whatsoever. Smith tackled Falcons veteran defensive lineman Jonathan Babineaux to the ground.
So now the record is straight, but don’t expect it to show up on the Pro Football Focus spreadsheets worshipped by so many. The NFL doesn’t review and change holding calls, to the best of Joe’s knowledge.

Marpet and Smith seem like fun characters. Their chemistry is nice to see.

The O Line is legit. I feel confident declaring that. Last year it was our strength and in Week 1 again the O Line looked great. I think we will see a bit more improvement opening up running lanes but the pass protection was already on point. By the way, it’s one thing to watch these guys on TV but when you see them up close, it’s jaw dropping. I met Donovan Smith after a Lightning playoff game and I wouldn’t be able to get past that guy with an armored truck. Nice as heck dude too.

I listened to that interview. The Bucs uniform numbers are kind of odd shaped. I prefer normal numbers.

@tmax
Of course they have chemistry, just read Joe’s caption!
In all seriousness though, I really do love the chemistry these guys are developing. Last year’s draft class seems to be a really tight knit group, and that will set the tone for this year’s class and all future ones.

Marpet ranked higher then Smith so this just helps the to appear more balanced on their sheets later down the line?

Teacherman
Where do you guys keep getting this crap. The Bucs could not have gotten Lael Collins!!! His agent made that clear. They were not going to sign with any team as a low round pick.
