Little Rotation
September 12th, 2016Much was made about how the Bucs under new defensive line coach Jay Hayes would be running an eight-man rotation of linemen firing away.
Hayes mastered that for 13 years in Cincinnati, but that didn’t really happen yesterday.
The Bucs went with their big veteran guns against the Falcons.
Bucs beat writer Jenna Laine of ESPN shared the D-line’s snap counts on Twitter.
Gerald McCoy 59 91%
Robert Ayers 58 89%
Clinton McDonald 54 83%
William Gholston 40 62%
Noah Spence 35 54%
Akeem Spence 9 14%
Jacquies Smith 1 2%
Howard Jones 2 3%
A few things of note here. First, Smith hurt his knee early on special teams, so he was out of the mix. Second, McCoy, Ayers and McDonald likely played so much, in part, because the Bucs defense did a great job getting off the field.
Still McCoy, Ayers and McDonald carried a huge load.
If there was any question of how confident Bucs coaches are in those guys, it was answered yesterday.

@Joe
Re: Smith. Are they doing an MRI today? Any other news on him? Sorry if I missed it.

hope Jac Smith recovers fully. I’d really like Howard Jones. Like to see him get some more snaps.

Based on yesterday’s game, Spence will take a while to flourish.
It is only one game, but I never felt Koetter had a moment or a play that he was out coached by Quinn. In fact, just the opposite with the way he took advantage of ASJ and Evans on ATL’s rookie CBs and linebackers.
Nice change from the last 4 or more years of Lovie, Shiano or Morris where they left you scratching your head!

I agree on Howard Jones

So Cincinnati gave up 7 sacks on Ginger last night. I wonder if they miss Jay Hayes.

Scratch that. Jay Hayes is Dline duh. Monday morning linear thinking cranial flatulation kinda thing.

Happy with the win… but it felt too much like Washington last year minus the LOSS (I get that this is way better). However, The game felt stressful after a couple 3 & outs and 10 points scored by the dirty turds… I was flippn the F*#% out while we let them back into the game. Ugh, just put the nail in coffin next time when u have the chance.

@ SB with Jameis…
It’s okay.
Perhaps Hayes used to help teach the o-Line about the opposing teams d-line also….
I wouldn’t be surprised if he, indirectly, used to help the o-line also…
Go Bucs!

I’m really hoping J. Smith can recover. That look on his face being carted off was not promising, though.

@ARGH
Get used to it bro it’s the NFL and they’re all going to be close.
Look at KC’s win over San Diego..that’s a freaking comeback…
Cowboys and Giants…Saints Raiders…Panthers Broncos…
Most games in the NFL come down to the wire because both teams…even the poor ones are loaded with amazing athletes that can make plays.
Gotta have some luck. We did for sure. Julio spraining his ankle in that comeback was a first break of the year. A few more and we’ll be in the playoffs.

So dumb to have Smith out on special teams when he WAS perhaps our best pass rusher.
