“The Biggest Sore Thumb I See”

Former Bucs great Booger McFarland calls his Bucs key

Former Bucs great Booger McFarland calls his Bucs key and talks about an “armed robbery guy.”

Leave it to a Super Bowl champion to zero in on the core of what matter most.

A Super Bowl ring-wearer for the Bucs and Colts, former defensive tackle Booger McFarland served up his two cents on the Buccaneers’ 2016 hopes yesterday on WDAE-AM 620.

It’s all about America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, Booger says, as well as injuries across the roster. For now, Booger is most concerned about what he considers the keys for Jameis’ success.

“The key to this team is obviously going to be injuries,” Booger said. “I’m not sure what the hell is going on with [J.R.] Sweezy. Right now, he’s like the biggest armed robbery guy in the world. He got so much money and he ain’t played a lick. They have to get the offensive line healthy, Sweezy, Ali Marpet. If those guys aren’t healthy, it really doesn’t matter what Jameis does. And if Jason [Licht] is listening out there. Hopefully, they did their diligence on Sweezy and everything. Right now, that’s the biggest sore thumb I see is the offensive line. Anytime you give a guy that much money and he hasn’t practiced one time? I’m really, really concerned, not only for the Bucs, but I’m just concerned for Jameis. Because you got to get two guards that can block and be stout.

“Because he’s a pocket quarterback, … pocket quarterbacks want to step up. Well, if the guards are in their lap they can’t step up.”

Joe agrees with Booger. Excellent point about him being a pocket passer at his core and needing confidence in the pocket, but Joe is confident in Kevin Pamphile at left guard. Regular readers here know Joe wrote off Sweezy long ago for the 2016 season. The guy hasn’t practice since signing in March. Enough said.

Marpet did practice Monday, his first time since getting the dreaded boot on his right foot after a mysterious injury following a late-August practice.

Will Marpet be in full pads today for the real practice of game week? That will be key.

Joe you read my mind. We are only replacing one player on a successful OL from last year and that is of course Logan Mankins. He was an excellent signing and played well but he’s getting a little long of tooth.

Like you I felt Pamphile would take that spot. When we signed Sweezy I felt it was for a combo of depth and pushing Pamphile. Yeah I know you don’t pay that amount of money to a guy to sit the bench but the money has a way of working itself out. It’s the way of the league..Sweezy will be overpaid and Pamphile will be underpaid until he gets to cash in like Sweezy.

I take Boogers fundamental point that it’s all going to start with the OL…duh…but I disagree that is our major concern in terms of talent and depth

  2. Brian Says:

Have to wonder if this guy never plays a down for the Bucs if there is any way to recover some money? Not ONE practice with the team since signing. STOP THIEF!

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

Booger is complaining about someone getting a big contract and being injured????

  4. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

We may have a bunch of guys back from last year, but not one of them are good enough to be starters on a championship level team. This is an ok line at best. Marpet might, MIGHT, be good enough one day but we don’t know.

  5. Biff Barker Says:

Realist with a Zing. Booger missed the playoffs our SB season.

Booger is complaining about someone getting a big contract and being injured????

very nice. i was thinking the same thing realist. a pot calling the kettle black moment.

  7. Bucfan76 Says:

Fans keep acting as if Sweezy faked being healthy to get a big payday without playing. I think he probably would like to be able to play…..most players do. I think he may not be getting a fair shake until all the facts are in.

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

JR Sweezy is Keyshawn Johnson with alot of skin lightener

“Im not a smart man, but i know what…what?…Im not a smart man”

  9. Tampa Tony Says:

@bucrealist you read my mind. Some times these analyst have selective memories. Booger wasn’t even on the field for the Bucs super bowl and was traded because of his play didn’t meet his pay.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

It was supposed to be a sore thumb last season and they were fine. Least of my worries right now.

    @kobe-

What do you have against licht? Did he take your girl or something? He is head and shoulders a much better overall gm than we have had in a long time. Yeah he has made some misses, but has much more hits than misses. And show me a gm that doesn’t have any misses, that’s all part of the game. The goal is to win more (7 starters and a franchise qb in the last 2 drafts) than you lose (3 or so free agent signings that haven’t panned out YET).

    @Kobe

What was your posting name before this most recent one?

  13. Dave Pear Says:

Let TBBF out of the cooler.
    He has served his sentence.

  14. HIRE JIMBO Says:

    @ Jack Burton
Please reference Denver Broncos championship O Line and get back to me. Dotson (when healthy) is one of the best RT in the game. Every1 hates on Donavan Smith, but how many sacks did he give up last year? The number is 5 and that is darn good for a ROOKIE. And I won’t even start on Marpet. We have a good O line, not great but good. And denver AND Carolina prove to us that you can get far without a great O Line.

  15. LakeLandBuc Says:

People need to be honest and just accept the fact that Jason Licht isn’t good at signing free agents. We have spent more dead money on BUMS than any team in the NFL, during the last 3 years. Our best signings has been UDFA’s, and they make 1/10 of what these Bums are making.

  16. Kevin Says:

This line needs some premium talent added on top on smith and marpet…not enough there I agree

  17. Kobe Faker Says:

    Websters Dictionary

    Sweezy-

    1. to cheat (a person, business, etc.) out of money or other assets.
    2. to obtain by fraud or deceit.

“You trying to Sweezy me out of the child support!”

He did 10 years for Sweezying the credit cards.

The wife caught him Sweezying the next door neighbor in bed. He is Sweezied.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

    Good one Kobe. lol

  19. LakeLandBuc Says:

lol that’s funny kobe faker….Sweezy been hangin with Jeezy

  20. Bucfan76 Says:

    Thanks 87 & Dave Pear

  21. LakeLandBuc Says:

Anthony Collins, Michael Johnson, Bruce Carter, George Johnson, Tim Jennings, Mike Jenkins, Henry Melton, Tony McDaniel, Sterling Moore, Isiah Frey, Major Wright, Josh McCown, Bobby Rainey, Garrett Gilkey, Dane Fletcher these are the ex bums..Alterraun Verner, Brandon Myers, EDS are the underperforming current bums.

  22. D-Rome Says:

Booger is complaining about someone getting a big contract and being injured????

The criticism against Booger was fair back then. Now that he is a member of the media his criticism of the J.R. Sweezy debacle is also fair.

  23. HIRE JIMBO Says:

    @Lakeland
I take exemption to Sterling Moore, Bobby Rainey, Henry Melton, and Tony McDaniel. Those people were not signed to be THE GUY. They were supposed to be role players and they player their roles. Can’t be mad @ them for that.

  24. Cover Deuce Says:

The problem is after pamphile there isn’t a ton of depth. They’ve got Smith who they can kick around inside, and Cherilus, who is a liability in passing sets.

  25. Stpetebucsfan Says:

TBBF has been sent to the penalty box? Really? Hard to imagine TBBF doing anything that off kilter.

@Kobe Why not get a life. Do you really enjoy being an ignorant troll? MOst people look at your stuff and think what a freaking ignoramus.

I look at it and think…how sad…somebody with a life so deprived that they need to come trolling for attention on the internet.

Is there anything positive in your life? Is there any team or GM you respect?
If there is why not blog over there so you could be positive. It’s literally not good for your health to be so negative.

  26. D-Rome Says:

TBBF has been sent to the penalty box? Really? Hard to imagine TBBF doing anything that off kilter.

Never cross Joe when it comes to the integrity of the work he does for JoeBucsFan.com.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Instead of insulting Booger, maybe you people should weigh his words.

Booger has been accurately addressing Bucs topics for years now. He’s fair, balanced and knowledgeable.

    And he is right.

Consider this. If Kevin P ends up sucking while filling in for Sweezy, what are we left with?

    Nothing. That’s what.

And even if Sweezy comes back…what are we left with? Sweezy is even more of a question mark than Kevin P is.

Left guard is still a position of need. Licht should be looking for depth at the position.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Stpetebucsfan

I know this is the horse calling the kettle black, but don’t stoop to his level. I’ve seen too many trolls screw up the attitudes of good posters, and I enjoy your posts a lot. Don’t let him get to you.

  29. BigHogHaynes Says:

What the hell, the haters are out, Booger played good ball here in Tampa, getting paid then being hit by an injury is a hell of a lot different than the Sweezy Situation, yall can put them pots and kettles back under the sink!

  30. Pickgrin Says:

Free TBBF. (who speaks for Pablo)

Joe went all Roger Godell on him.

The good news is that Pamphile and Evans are both capable guards if Marpet and Sweezy continue to have injury problems. Not great, but capable. It sure is good to have some depth up front for a change.

  31. "That guy" Says:

The biggest sore thumb I see is up ASJ’s ass.

  32. Bob in Valrico Says:

I went back and read TBBF’s post and it its unclear to me what was so offensive. Free TBBF your readers are speaking.

  33. LakeLandBuc Says:

Sweezy did “sweeze” the Bucs for $32 million then they turn around and throw peanuts at Big Dot.

  34. Bucfan76 Says:

    @ Bob in Valrico

From what I can see…..TBBF suggested that Joe sensationalizes like many in the media do…..like putting a car wreck at the top of the news. Joe took offense which is his prerogative.

  35. Bucfan76 Says:

took offence….(so used to saying offense)

  36. orlbucfan Says:

What exactly did TBBF do to the Joes? Razz them? Plus, I think TBBF is a “she.” She made a remark in a comment indicating it. So, the Joes BETTER NOT push the sexism; I am a proud “she,” too. 🙂 I’m not as worried about OL depth as I am the DL.

Go MIGHTY BUCS On Sunday, 9/11!!!!!!!

  37. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @ORLBUC
Believe Life of a Buc was asking if she was the only Lady on this site, just
    the other day.

  38. 813bucboi Says:

why did we cut josh allen?…he was pretty good vs Cleveland in the run game and pass pro….the oline depth has me a little worried….one injury to a guard or tackle and we may be in trouble….e.smith is inconsistent…GO BUCS!!!!

  39. Pickgrin Says:

Josh Allen is on the Bucs practice squad 813. He can be brought up to the active roster at any time if needed.

  40. Capt.Tim Says:

    Its unfortunate that Sweezybis injured.
But injuries are an every day part of life in the NFL
If he cant play by next year, we cut him- and count our loses.

But if he plays, this year or next
You have a young, powerful guard- who has played on championship teams
And is one of the most aggressive Olinemen in the league. This guy plays angry.
Much like our own Donavan Smith- who overpowers people, with Attitude!
We will have another young aggresive linemen- that we can Pair with Marpet, and Smith for years to come

Next year, we draft a Right Tackle and and Center- and we are good to go

Although if Sweezy is Healthy- Pamphile would be starting at Right Tackle, in my opinion.

  41. K2 Says:

Having trouble remembering all the big plays the Booger made in the Bucs Super Bowl win…maybe the floppy hat slowed him down.

  42. Buc15 Says:

I really like our line and feel we have one of the deepest, most solid lines. The Sweezy deal sucks for now but hopefully he comes back to provide even more depth. We have the pieces in place to have a great oline for the next decade.
