Swap Boot “Unstoppable”

It seems each team has a signature play.
For example, remember former Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson and his fetish for the Benn’d Around?
Well, Matt Bowen of BSPN believes the Bucs have a new favorite play. And when used properly, it cannot be stopped he believes.
What is this play? Bowen calls it the “swap boot.”
How it works: Boot plays in the deep red zone (plus 10-yard line) are great because the speed of the game increases. And that means defenders are often too quick with their run/pass keys, leading to busts. Here, the Bucs bring 21/Pony personnel onto the field (two tailbacks in the game) and align Charles Sims (F) in a wing alignment. At the snap, quarterback Jameis Winston (Q) and running back Doug Martin (R) show the toss action to pull the linebackers to the open side of the formation. However, this is a boot — or a swap boot — with Sims coming behind the line of scrimmage and the X receiver running a crossing route. With the tight end (Y) blocking down and then releasing, Winston has three immediate targets to hit (Sims is the primary). This is a great call to catch the defense in the red zone.

It’s an interesting formation as it has both Doug Martin (a power runner who can break tackles) and Charles Sims (a dangerous pass-catcher) on the field at the same time.
Talk about a defense not knowing who to cover.

It looks like Jameis would have all kinds of options on a formation like Matt Bowen described Joe. Excluding Jameis and 5 OLinemen, he could have 1 WR, 2 TE & 2 RB to throw to (or run) or 2 WR, 1 TE & 2 RB. That’s a lot of firepower in a compressed area like that. Don’t know whether it’s ‘unstoppable’ or not (suspect that Bowen was exaggerating some), but it sure does provide a lot of flexibility having Martin & Sims on the field at the same time with 3 more potential receivers.
Recently read a 1-year old article titled ‘How the Patriots are toying with the NFL’s rulebook — and winning’ about the Pats capitalizing on the NFL’s receiver eligibility rules. Belicheck sounds like a master of ‘trick plays’ and using the NFL rules to create deception in play design. Interestingly, the play Bowen detailed sounds like the perfect place to take a trick from the Pats’ playbook.

yeah,that link was a road to nowhere.Not sure if its Matt Bowens’ play or the bucs play.Now the bucs did use something similar with the TD to Sims.Not sure if it was a Jameis improv or if martin was in the game on the play.

When was the last time anyone EVER said anything about the Bucs offense having an unstoppable play? It’s never happened! Can’t wait to see “swap boot” on Sunday!! Go Bucs!!!

Really like what I’ve seen from Koetters offense this preseason. Jameis rolling and throwing. Combined that with fake pitch or playaction. Such a great combination with the multitude of weapons the Bucs have. No unstoppable plays but this is a good one with their personnel and scheme.

Thank God we drafted Jaboo last year.
next years college qbs is total trash…I also think Groff and wentz is 2 years away from even being somewhat productive…still big IF they are starter qbs
*We lucked out. I think Tenn did also because Mariota is also a very good player …if he can stay healthy

Man……..It looks as if the state of Florida is going to have another kicker in a few years that gets drafted in the second round. The new kicker for the Gators, Eddie Pinero, kicked his first field goals Ever in a game and he Nailed all three from 40, 48, and 49 yards like they were chip shots. The whole team was crowded around him in practice trying to heckle him and he Still hit a 77 yard field goal!!!!!!!!

Could you do me a favor, and put the “not real diagram of the play” at the beginning of the article? I’m a dumba$$ and I spent the whole article glancing back at the diagram trying to figure out the play. I get to the end and it’s like “Ha Ha, not the real play dumba$$!”

Thanks for the laugh, Joe. I remember back then it would seem that anytime Benn made any kind of muscle movement before the snap I’d say, “Here we go again” and then guess how many yards the Bucs would lose.
