Jeremiah George And Major Wright Are Cut
August 28th, 2016Training camp started off crappy for veteran safety Major Wright, and now he’s gone.
Returning special teams ace linebacker Jeremiah George also has left the building in the latest round of Bucs cuts.
Today, the Bucs dumped defensive tackle Travis Britz, cornerback Daniel Davie, wide receiver Andre Davis, offensive lineman Taylor Fallin, defensive end Martin Ifedi, running back Storm Johnson, as Joe noted earlier, defensive tackle Ishmaa’ily Kitchen, safety Kimario McFadden, punter Jacob Schum and tight end Tevin Westbrook.
Schum, last year’s punter, who got considerable work Friday, lost his battle to free agent Bryan Anger.
Wright, who arrived with Lovie Smith, will be best known in Bucs lore for the opening snap of 2015. That’s still a head-shaker for Joe every time he thinks about it.
August 28th, 2016 at 2:33 pm
I knew Major Wright would be cut. Glad they made a decision at punter so Aguayo and Anger can now concentrate on getting their timing down together on field goals.
August 28th, 2016 at 2:33 pm
A LovieTime remnant sent packing….making Conte the last Lovie defensive backfield retread disasters remaining. Conte has played decently at times…yet seems to get hit a lot harder than hits he dishes out. No bueno for a safety.
August 28th, 2016 at 2:37 pm
@JonBuc
I am not crazy about Conte either, I will be very surprised if he is on this team next year!! He is very inconsistent with pass defense!!!
August 28th, 2016 at 2:37 pm
Can’t risk Major getting a personal foul in game one and killing the team’s energy again.
August 28th, 2016 at 2:37 pm
Why would they cut George?? He provides quality plays on special teams. CUT KENNY BELL INSTEAD!!
August 28th, 2016 at 2:38 pm
Tough call on George…he played well on special teams, and sprung the block for Hump last night.
August 28th, 2016 at 2:50 pm
Jeremiah’s cut surprised many of us..no doubt some team will pick him up..

Y do u have us in a 34 front? They have said multiple times that we are a 43 front with SOME 34 looks
August 28th, 2016 at 3:14 pm
LUVMYBUCS, with both Ayers and Gholston playing inside as well as outside, I’m not so sure Brown or Francis are in the mix. That’s 10 DL, possibly one too many.
But this is, no doubt, the deepest Bucs team I can remember in many years…
August 28th, 2016 at 3:14 pm
Even though he’s has a rough start to his – short career.
If I was Licht – I would call up Cleveland and trade for CB Justin Gilbert
August 28th, 2016 at 3:15 pm
HIRE JIMBO
Remember its a Hybrid Defense. So you gotta have the bodies
August 28th, 2016 at 3:18 pm
Isiah Johnson has been making plays at the SS position. He is def one to keep an eye on.
August 28th, 2016 at 3:19 pm
sad to see George go… really great kid! his dad coached my son in little league & i’ve watched George grow into the wonderful young man he is today… hopefully he’ll get picked up somewhere else or brought back here… my guess is his size & speed with what Smith wants… heard he wants larger guys in front 7
August 28th, 2016 at 3:19 pm

I hear U – But we another solid nose for runsupport.
An Brown has progressed very well this offseason.
I just can’t see them giving a prospect of that caliber up
August 28th, 2016 at 3:21 pm

With that rotation you can run mulitiple fronts – and have the bodies to do it.

They are definitely not giving up on Benenoch without seeing him play at all, your crazy. They said one more year in college and the kid would have been a late 1st or 2nd round pick. Hes not Goin anywhere.
August 28th, 2016 at 3:54 pm

Major wrong.
Ooohhh! Rimshot!
August 28th, 2016 at 3:56 pm
I DO think they might sign a veteran WR after the season starts though. And if anyone is moved to IR, it would cause a spot to open.
Louis Murphy might start on PUP, along with Sweezy, which would free up two spots for a little while.
August 28th, 2016 at 4:00 pm
Of course, I’m only guessing.
August 28th, 2016 at 4:02 pm
Really no surprises. Most of these guys were buried so far down the depth chart it was only a matter of when, not if they were cut. I do think it speaks to the quality of coaching, personnel moves, and overall talent level that so many of Lovie’s guys are being passed on the depth chart or let go. Happy with the direction this new regime is moving in.
August 28th, 2016 at 4:10 pm
I don’t think Bell makes the active roster. 1 catch and mediocre at best special teams play so far. Shep and Hump make it, then I think it’s Dye, with Murphy waiting to get healthy. KB probably going to practice squad.
August 28th, 2016 at 4:12 pm
Bonzai,
I know your feelings on this but in reality, this team is not going to keep 5 TE’s and I don’t see where Kenny Bell has done anything to warrant a roster spot. Full Disclosure: I am a Kenny Bell fan.
August 28th, 2016 at 4:23 pm
@luvmybucs
Yes, we are a hybrid/multiple front defense and yes we do need the bodies for that, but HIRE JIMBO is still correct. Not sure why you have our depth chart listed as a 3-4 front/team. Our depth chart is listed as a 4-3 team on the official site, the people in the know and coaches have REPEATEDLY said we are a 4-3 team. So therefore your depth chart is incorrect and HIRE JIMBO is correct in stating and asking why you list the alternative.
You may be very much correct on the bodies we keep for our front 7 though, and I would be very happy if those are the guys we keep for it.
But again, 4-3, not 3-4 when referring to or listing our depth chart!
August 28th, 2016 at 4:30 pm
I mostly agree Bonzai with a few variations.
The major oversight you made is that they will keep 3 QBs to protect Ryan Griffen from going somewhere else.
I doubt that 4 RBs will be kept. I see Peyton Barber headed to our practice squad this year.
I think it is likely that Caleb Benenoch will not be exposed to waivers so they will find a roster spot for him.
Brandon Myers is likely the odd man out unless they decide to only keep 5 receivers which would probably mean that Kenny Bell is headed to the practice squad (IF he clears waivers).
I think they will only keep 3 DTs and that they will keep 6 DEs including Kournei Brown. Ayers and Gholson will both play inside when needed or when its advantageous.
The decisions do not appear to be that difficult save for a handful.
I believe the final 2 or 3 roster spots and decisions that will be difficult is who to keep between, Kenny Bell, Brandon Myers, Koutnei Brown, A.J. Francis, Luke Rhodes and Josh Allen. 3 of those 6 will make it, the other 3 will not. My guess is that Kenny Bell, Kourtnei Brown and Luke Rhodes will be kept and Myers, Francis and Josh Allen will not. Allen and Francis are practice squad eligible if they clear waivers.
August 28th, 2016 at 4:37 pm
And regarding both Luv and Bonzai’s depth chart – Daryl Smith is the primary back up at all LB spots. If either L. David or K. Alexander cannot play – Daryl Smith will be the next man up at both Will and Middle LB.
August 28th, 2016 at 4:37 pm
Shum didn’t get any work Friday, he didn’t even see the field. Anger held every kick and made every punt. Check your facts joe.
August 28th, 2016 at 4:37 pm
LUVMYBUCS, like the defensive roster, except for the 10 DLinemen. With the Bucs flexibility with Ayers and Gholston, just can’t see them keeping more than 9. Especially since they’re pretty much committed to keeping 3 QBs and will likely keep 6 CBs, at least to start the season. 53 slots doesn’t allow for too many ‘luxuries’. My guess is that Brown won’t make the cut.
August 28th, 2016 at 4:40 pm
-JGhoti86
-HIRE JIMBO
Brothas of course – I know we’re listed as a 4-3/Multiple Front Defense.
Several teams in the NFL run a base 4-3 Over/Under front — w/ 3-4 personnel.
The reason I listed the depth chart this way -Is to show some…
WHY we would possibly keep that extra DE/LB Like..
-Kourtnei Brown

Not that it makes any difference, but Schum did play Friday night.
August 28th, 2016 at 5:25 pm
LUVMYBUCS … If it wasn’t for having to keep 3 QBs I’d agree 100% on the even split. But on the offensive side we’ll need 3 QB, 4 RB, 10 TE/WR, 9 OL … 26 bodies. Only leaves 24 for the defense. Tend to think we’ll keep 5 TE & 5 WR, but Coach K might opt to go 4 TE & 6 WR (less likely I think). Who they keep on the OLine will be interesting. At this point I think it’ll be D. Smith, E. Smith, Hawley, Cherilus, Dotson, Pamphile, Marpet, Allen and Benenoch. What happens when Sweezy returns is anyone’s guess at this point. Gut feel right now is that both James and Barber will make the 53 cut.
August 28th, 2016 at 5:40 pm
Major shocker!
August 28th, 2016 at 5:45 pm
Cut Kourtni Brown, he’s garbage. 2 sacks in the 4th qrt of a PS game against the Browns does not earn you a spot.
August 28th, 2016 at 5:46 pm
They will keep three QBs in case they get a trade offer for Glennon…that’s why they kept three last year
August 28th, 2016 at 5:47 pm
DeAndre Hopkins just broke Mike Jenkins. Prob just put a final nail in his coffin. Hopkins is a bad bad man.

August 28th, 2016 at 6:18 pm
LUVMYBUCS we’re 100% in agreement … almost. Really doubt that Hansbrough beats out Mike James, and also doubt at this point that they’ll cut Vitale. He’s an interesting prospect with some unique skills, but still very raw. They might try to slip him onto the PS, but just as likely I think that they’ll carry him as the 26th offensive player and sit him inactive each week.
August 28th, 2016 at 6:27 pm
@Vitale
I don’t think they will cut Vitale because even if they wanted to sign him to the practice squad, there is no way he’ll clear waivers. There was just too much interest in him when he was picked. A team will give him a shot.
I also don’t think Evan Smith will start at center. Joe Hawley has done a great job there, and they need Smith to bounce around because he is more versatile.
August 28th, 2016 at 6:27 pm
That was @Defense Rules
lol
August 28th, 2016 at 6:27 pm
Howard Jones easily makes the final 53. The question for the Dline is, do they keep 3 DTs (McCoy, A. Spence, Mcdonald) and 6 DE’s (including Kourney Brown) or 4 DTs (A.J. Francis) and 5 DEs (Ayers, N. Spence, J. Smith, Gholson and HoJo).
I think it will be the former because of Ayers and Gholson’s ability to play inside.
August 28th, 2016 at 6:28 pm
It’s fun to make these guesses. Curious as to how many I get right.
August 28th, 2016 at 6:29 pm
CBs by Ints last 3 years
Grimes 13
Verner 8
Banks 7
Robinson 3
Hargraves 2
Jude 0
August 28th, 2016 at 6:29 pm
Luv..I was the one who had asked Auman about Kourtnei..I don’t think they will cut him after the way he’s been playing this preseason..Bucs can carry 6 DE’s to be on the safe side..
August 28th, 2016 at 6:29 pm
I think they’ll keep 3 RB’s—Martin, Sims & James—with Vitale playing TE/FB double-duty, and Hansbrough on PS.
I would not be surprised if Myers is the odd man out.
Decent depth is such a luxury.
I also think the Bell experiment is over unless he just explodes Thursday night.
August 28th, 2016 at 6:32 pm
I agree with Pickgrin: Ayers & Gholston flexibility inside may mean only 3DT’s are kept with Brown possibly making the roster.
August 28th, 2016 at 6:35 pm
All I know is I’ve been watching all the so called teams that matter and the supposed up and coming teams. No team looks out right better than Buccs. The new media darlings like the jags and raiders are not on our level. We will lead the league in sacks and ints en route to our first Famous lead championship.
August 28th, 2016 at 6:39 pm
Game balls should be given to coach Warhop and coach Hayes right now. For those think pre season doesn’t matter I disagree. It gives you a barometer for what your team will be come the regular season. 14 sacks in the pre saeson would’ve been more had Gus Bradley not ask coach K to tell his dawgs to be easy in Jville. I firmly believe this because reports all week were our d line was whipping they o line @$$.
August 28th, 2016 at 6:42 pm
probably a guy Jameis don’t want on the team too.
August 28th, 2016 at 6:43 pm
Defense Rules
Lol – that was my CANE basis (at Mike James). But serious Hansbrough has potential
as a 3rd down back, KR/Special Teams ace. So I wouldn’t be shocked
Now for Vitale. Sorry brotha – don’t get me wrong. I see him make a nice block here & there. But he’s tripping over his on feet – running routes. He looks & plays like practice squad guy right now (In time who knows?). But every darn time I see the team run max protection on sweeps – I see #82. Same of screens.
He’s a functional part of the offense
August 28th, 2016 at 6:44 pm
I think some of you are missing the cross-training aspect. The Bucs have been cross training several guys to play various positions. I think that is how they plan to address depth this year.
Plug and play style on defense.
They’ve been using Cliff Matthews to back up GMC, and he can play DE. Ryan Smith at Safety, but he can also play CB.
Hawley, Smith and Allen all play center, but Smith and Allen play guard as well. Kevin Pamphile can play guard or tackle (in a pinch). Ali Marpet can play Guard, Tackle AND Center. Dan Vitale can play FB and TE. Charles Sims can play RB or WR.
There is quality cross training all over the place, as we saw against the Browns. The Bucs can afford to keep just 5 DEs and 5 CBs, because one of their safeties also plays CB.
August 28th, 2016 at 6:47 pm
Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun.
Screw a game ball brotha – I banged on that dude hard after his 1st season.

Str8 up LUV..
August 28th, 2016 at 6:55 pm
We tend to judge Banks as an all around corner and that would be important if he was going to start on our team, but he isn’t. What he is is a quality role player who brings a big physical presence and he’s the only corner like that on our team, I wouldn’t want to give that up. I can tell you that banks is not a man to man specialist. We need to play him to his stregths, just look how good he looked in Greg Schianos zone heavy scheme. Banks didn’t work with Lovie because he was unwilling to adjust his scheme to fit the style of his players.
August 28th, 2016 at 6:57 pm
Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun.
Well hell gotta do it now – done deal
August 28th, 2016 at 6:58 pm
I agree with the cross training point. There are a lot of guys capable of playing multiple positions. Wouldn’t be wound up in the DE/DT split so much as how many defensive lineman are kept. Same for OL, plus a lot of them are dinged up. Also the ability to play special teams is also going to be huge in determining the bottom of the roster.
August 28th, 2016 at 7:00 pm
Gotta take my young lion to the park – before it gets to late.
Later Brothas
August 28th, 2016 at 7:07 pm
Seems funny that starting off with 90 players, it really only comes down to a handful of them making or not making the 53-man cut depending on which direction Licht and Koetter want to go. Agree Bonzai that the Bucs are in a good situation in terms of cross-training and flexibility. DT is interesting to me because of the injury history of GMC, Akeem and Clinton. Granted Ayers and Gholstpn can play inside, but situationally, not every down. Gut feel is that Smitty will talk them into keeping Francis or possibly Matthews, plus 5 DEs.
August 28th, 2016 at 7:25 pm
@luvmybucs
I gotcha, my misunderstanding, my b
@preseason haters
For those who think preseason doesn’t matter, we would’ve lost our 1st game this season with that special teams play the first “preseason” game or would be 1st regular season game against Philly?!?
August 28th, 2016 at 7:42 pm
Lakeland’s own ” Adarius Glanton ” will not be cut by the Bucs. Mock my words
August 28th, 2016 at 7:44 pm
He’s the best LB since Ray Lewis to come out of Lakeland
August 28th, 2016 at 9:08 pm
Bonzai….
You think Bell will be ahead of Shepard…and Returning
Did you watch Bell in any game…
He can’t catch or hold onto a ball
Dye will return
Bell is gone maybe PS
August 28th, 2016 at 9:19 pm
Some of these cut will be safe on the practice squad…..it wouldn’t be a big gamble to only keep 3 RBs……and to place two like Barber & Hansborough on the PS…..
Some players who hit the practice squad may be gobbled up….and if that happens, it means our team has greatly improved.
I think Bell could last on the PS….perhaps even Vitale…
August 28th, 2016 at 9:25 pm
We’re laughing once again Bonzai.
August 28th, 2016 at 9:49 pm
After reading all these comments on a Sunday night I Must say that being a Bucs fan is about to get REALLY Exciting!!!! Albeit Cleveland but we looked crisp in almost every phase of Football for the first 30 minutes the other night. THAT is all This Bucs fan can realistically ask for. And I got it in spades.
August 28th, 2016 at 10:13 pm
LUV I figured that with a broken leg that Benenoch is already gonna be on IR. I think I heard Koetter say he’s done for the year the day after he went down.
August 28th, 2016 at 10:28 pm
pickgrin says: I believe the final 2 or 3 roster spots and decisions that will be difficult is who to keep between, Kenny Bell, Brandon Myers, Koutnei Brown, A.J.
————————————————————-
first-off, good luck to the cuts…I hope they land somewhere else.
secondly, I think Allen has impressed enough he might stick, especially with the uncertainty of Sweezy and Benenoch. I agree, and think he winds up on IR like Bell was last year…”redshirted”.
I realize Bell hasn’t produced. How do you gauage him with the poor play of Glennon and Griffin.
Rhodes is just consistent…..he’s currently our back-up mlb, and don’t see him getting cut. Not in Kuechly’s class as far as athleticism…but you can see his instincts on display.
Speaking of which, no one mentioned Griffin. I assume we’re keeping three….but most teams don’t keep three qbs. I would not be shocked if Glennon gets cut. I felt ok with Mike as our back-up until the preseason games started. He just hasn’t progressed at all. Griffin looked terrible at times, but with him you see a glimmer or talent. Just needs to not force things and make better decisions.
I can see us keep Brown. That’s a tough call. With the injuries on the DL, and if opposing teams want to try and run us, having Francis around might not be a bad idea at all. We have plenty of DE it seems…though with this team maybe there can never be a enough. Hayes keeps the rotation fresh though and that will help out…with hopefully fresher legs so we can get off the field more and be all about flying to the ball on D’!!!!
August 28th, 2016 at 11:10 pm
They are making roster room for reuben randle right?
August 29th, 2016 at 1:57 am
Hey Joe,
Why doesn’t Bucs wear the red jerseys at home until what seems like late October, every year? It’s not like we’ve taken advantage of the so called heat difference?
Off topic I know but real curious….
Tampe raised living in Houston.
August 29th, 2016 at 2:14 am
That’s why they do it. Been that way since (at least) Sam Wyche days. First four home games (at least) Bucs wear white.
August 29th, 2016 at 6:20 am
Thanks, Joe!!!
August 29th, 2016 at 8:25 am
Hope they keep Banks. TbBucs3 said why better than I could. Barber will get grabbed by another team if cut or put on practice squad. Bell stinks, why keep him?
