Jameis Helped Aguayo

Had pep talk with his kicker.

Naturally, being the leader of the Bucs, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, couldn’t just stand by while his friend and teammate Roberto Aguayo mentally melted down over his recent kicking woes.

Last night Aguayo was a perfect 6-for-6 with three field goals and three extra-points. Perhaps it was Jameis’ chat with Aguayo that did the trick? After the game, Jameis discussed reaching out to his former Florida State teammate in recent days.

“Yeah, I’ve talked to him,” Jameis said. “I think just as a friend and a teammate I went to him. But you know, he’s a good guy himself. He’s never too down on himself, but he’s a perfectionist. He wants to do [well], so it’s hard. Everyone makes mistakes. He was like, ‘I had some misses last week,’ and I said, ‘I had a lot of misses last week.’

“So just to get his emotions up and make him feel good about himself. He went out there and showed out and being in front of the home crowd you have got to love that.”

Maybe that is all it took for Aguayo? A comforting chat with a guy he knows. A guy with whom he has been through a lot. A guy shared quite a bit of his success.

Joe hopes that after last night, Bucs fans can resume being bored with chip shot field goals.

That was a pretty good way for Winston to put it in perspective after he went 0-6 to start the game last week. Glad Roberto was able to work it out!

  2. DB55 Says:

O Ye of little faith. He rose and rebuked the HATERS and there was calm.

Rejoice for the kingdom of Jameis is here!!!!

  3. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Perhaps it was Jameis’ chat with Aguayo that did the trick? ” Roberto just needed to get all the naysayers out of his head that’s all. Jameis, among others I’m sure, helped him do that … friend to friend as he said. Roberto the Perfectionist will gradually give way to Roberto the Realist … no kicker in history has ever made every single kick. Glad that he’s back on-track.

  4. Old Time Buc Says:

It was sure nice to see. Now let’s move on.

So glad the kicker turmoil has been lifted at least for now. Had he kept missing kicks we would never have heard the end of the gnashing woes. What a relief.

  6. Cobraboy Says:

I’m sure keeping his head focused on the ball instead of jerking up helped, as well as a full follow-through.

It’s amazing how proper technique and fundamentals help one’s performance…and attitude.

  7. Buc1987 Says:

As critical as I’ve been on the kid, I knew he was going to nail first kick before he even lined up. He made it and I hollered out BAM Emeril style.

  8. Vegabuc Says:

I’ve been very skeptical of the move to draft a kicker in the second round. Yet last night I was pleasantly surprised to see how Aguayo responded in front of the home crowd. This team needs a consistent kicker badly. I sure hope last night’s game are sings of things to come.

You know, every time this stuff is posted it makes it seem like Winston is trying to get attention for what he does, sort of “Look at me! I did this!”

I don’t sense that he’s like this, but clearly Joe is giving him too much credit here. He was a friend, nothing more. He did what true friends do.

I don’t think he deserves any celebration for doing what he should do as a friend. Winston WAS NOT the reason our kicker made those kicks. Time and practice was.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

Who slept better last night Aguayo or Licht?

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

IF Aguayo continues to kick as good as he did last night, we need a good positive nickname for him.

    Like Martine had “Automatica Grammatica”

Normally nicknames are easy…I’m stumped on this one.

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

Jameis is now the kick whisperer for Roberto the kicker

  13. RTG Bucs Says:

How about Autoguayo. When he earns it though. Its still early.

  14. RTG Bucs Says:

    @ Dewey

Jameis is the whisperer for the team. Dude has what it takes!

  15. Dooshlarue Says:

…….and on the seventh day Lord Jameis said “Let there be Licht”……and so it was done.

  16. Trubucfan22 Says:

Oh my Jameis! You guys are funny.

  17. LakeLandBuc Says:

And Vonn Bell has 17 tackles, 3 tackles for losses and a sack this preseason. smh

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

2 Fl St boyz keepin it real!

  19. BigMacAttack Says:

Aguayo had problem with kick offs, trying to judge distance to avoid touchbacks. He was too focused on it. They told him to just kick the hell out of the ball and do what you do. He kicked it out of the end zone as usual and put his effort back on accuracy for points.

  20. gilhealy Says:

Heck, with a stout defense, kick it out of the endzone every time. 25 yd line? Big deal. Nobody got hurt on the play, and we’ll stop ’em wherever they start. Let our guys do a little sprint to stay loose, make a u-turn, and go back to the sidelines.

  21. feelthepewterpower Says:

Joe, speaking of Win’…..does he get out of that sack last year with him being toned this season and seemingly quicker??

  22. feelthepewterpower Says:

err….on the touchdown pass to Sims…..he was able to scramble enough to buy time when things broke down. I don’t think he makes that play last season….

  23. teacherman777 Says:

The Virgin of Clearwater has blessed him!

She made him miss those kicks,

Now he will go on to have a 100% PAT rate for his career.

The Virgin of Clearwater (reference to the US 19 window miracle)

    will guide his feet!!

    Go Bucs!!

  24. teacherman777 Says:

whybdid she make him have a bad week?

TO SEE THE SNKES AND DEMONS IN THE STANDS!!

    If you’re a hater, you’re a devil!

If you’re a racist, The Virgin of Clearwater will curse you!

    lol
