Winning on third down.
What a difference a year makes.
It seemed the only thing Lovie Smith gave a damn about was takeaways. He didn’t care if offenses ran up and down the field on his defenses, wearing the players down, keeping his offense off the field, so long as he got his coveted takeaways.
Get off the field on third down? Eh, whatever.
To highlight how moronic this philosophy was, you had a franchise quarterback, a No. 1 overall draft pick, and he sat on the sidelines chewing his fingernails while opposing offenses manhandled the Bucs defense.
No longer.
Last night, the Bucs held the Browns to 13 first downs. While that doesn’t seem very good on the surface, the Browns converted just 6-of-17 third down tries. That’s great work by Mike Smith’s defense. One of those first downs the Browns earned was via a penalty.
By getting off the field on third downs, it got the ball back in the hands of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. And look what happened.

What a night!
The bucs dominated EVERY facet of the game last night. Besides the one td from rg3 to Gordon, our guys looked elite. Hopefully we can carry that momentum into the regular season.
Speaking of the rg3 td, have you seen the headlines on NFL.com?!? That’s their main story line. How rg3 and Gordon dominated the long ball last night.. no mention of rg3’s fumble or 5 sacks or Winston and Evans connection… what do the bucs have to do to get some credit?!
Its like a slap in the face to every Tampa Bay fan. Just goes to show that the nfl.com media heads can spin a story better than Charlotte can spin her web.. maybe one day we will be relevant to talk about nationally.. I’m just appreciative to have Joe on our side bringing us the real news quality stories.
Anywho, it’s a good day to be a Bucs fan can’t wait to see what we do this season!

Yea that Soft A** punter was on the field a lot last night. But it was the Browns we are talking about. I am looking foward to Atlanta to really see where we are

I noticed that too Bucboi. I saw that artical and just shook my head in disbelief. How could you watch that game and come away with that story.
There is another story on there that talked about how bad the Browns played but not much love for the Bucs in either artical.

Same with ESPN, headline of Josh Gordon dominate. What ??? I think they’re still sore over their guy Lovie being fired, they do not want to report the positives with this team. But ohh boy, Aguayo misses kicks and every media outlet covers it.

Grimes actually played well except that one long pass. The TD was a push off on great position for a pick. Watch Gordon left hand and see the push off.

What a difference a year makes? Or do you mean what a difference a defensive draft and the addition of some talented defensive free agents make! When talented ball players buy into a scheme (any scheme) it makes coaches look good! simple as that!

I think we won’t see a young or third string quarterback play against us and have record setting day like we saw every time against lovie defensive philosophy.
No more car salesman getting signed a week before they play bucs and go 23 for 26 4 td 360 yards. 10 for 12 3rd down conversion rate
Funny saw article of lovie coaching his college team preaching turnovers and spending hours on it.

I enjoyed the game, no power restored 20 minutes before kickoff. The Bucs looked big, better. badass and beautiful. The crowd looked sparse, this Bucs team should fill the seats coming up.

Wow, What an exciting team to watch again!!!!! Seeing the defense adapting to what is happening in a game is something we have not seen in years!!! As soon as the defense had them guessing is when they poured it on!!! almost like they could smell the blood in the water!!! ( that is another thing we have not seen in years!!!)
Was this against probably the worst team in the NFL? Do the Bucs still need some pieces to compete against the big boys!!!! we all know the answer to this!!! But for once they dished it out in their house!!! For once they were disciplined!!!! For once they looked like they were having fun for the first time in years!!!!

My biggest concern for this team going forward is run defense. We haven’t looked good in this area all preseason. Bad gap control. Bad outside contain. It will be issue.

Agree completely with all the enthusiasm and forward looking promise but please, put some perspective in the picture. We are talking Browns here. Bucs v Dawgs in their pound. Don’t go overboard too fast.

I will give Aguayo credit. He came out and nailed that 48 yrder, with ease . It helped set the tone of the game. Coming away with points from no gimme field goal, from the most struggling Buc of the past week. Just like a miss could have set a bad tone for the game. The make started things rolling.

Their play in all three categories last night was awesome for their only meaningful Preseason Game! But there’s something I believe that was way more impressive than their play, it was the penalties. To have only 3 for an entire game (not 3 a drive) means this coaching staff is making a huge impact and finally the players a listening to it. Discipline football is what we’ve been waiting on, for a long time. GO BUCS

turnovers aren’t predictable either…..sure, you can be in good position, teach fundamentals to knock the ball away, etc….but that doesn’t guarantee a recovery or INT. Luck is involved on tips and bounces….
Glad we just have the mindset of everyone flying to the ball (“all about the ball”) .instead of playing off not to get burned deep, and getting off the field regardless. Turnovers will come just be the sheer will of wanting to get off the field…..

Chris maybe BSPN was highlighting how much strength and ability Josh Gordon has for pushing CBs in the back at the goal line. That or they’re even more stoned than Gordon (if thats possible).
