Saturday Training Camp Notes & Nuggets

August 13th, 2016

Ayers

Training camp forges ahead and Joe was here at sunny One Buc Palace taking notes. Here are your highlights:

*Russell Shepard with a diving catch off the left sideline from America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. For the “Jameis is inaccurate” crowd, Jameis was spot-throwing. He released the ball well before Shepard broke for the ball. If there is one offensive player who has really jumped up depth chart in training camp, it is Shepard. He has gone from being a virtual invisible special teams player to a legit receiver.

*Vincent Jackson in back of the end zone from Jameis, just getting toes down while falling out of bounds. Think of the TD those two hooked up for in New Orleans last year. Virtual carbon copy.

*Lotta AC/DC this morning. Gotta keep the boss (Jason Licht) happy.

*Plenty of special teams work, but Joe learned this was pre-planned, not a result of the mess seen on Thursday night.

*Floppy hat duty for Vernon Hargreaves (see home page story), and guard J.R. Sweezy is back from California and back on floppy hat patrol. Still no word when he’ll practice for the first time as a Buccaneer.

*Doug Martin put the ball on the ground. (Joe’s waving at you, Phil Mushnick.)

*Guys are making some sick grabs today. Cameron Brate highlight show surely coming to Buccaneers.com.

*Defensive tackle A.J. Francis (who Miko Grimes likes) picks up a fumble, perhaps after the whistle, and styles Deion-like down field about 20 yards to the delight of fans. The people love to see a big man rumble down field. After practice, speaking to someone who would know, Joe was told the play of the veteran Francis has brought a smile to the faces of the right people in the organization. Francis was the catalyst for the Bucs’ interception on Thursday night. And he’s showed up steadily in Joe’s practice notes, particularly last week.

*Just saw a dude with a creamsicle Josh Freeman jersey. Can’t someone help the guy get an upgrade?*

*Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold” fills the air. If the defense plays this season like it did Thursday night, might this be the defense’s theme song?

*In red zone, Jameis seems to aim for crossbar to allow someone to go up and get it. No one did.

*Mike Glennon drops back… looking… looking… looking. Rolls left…. looking… looking… looking and dumps short four-yard pass to the Stampeder

*VJax showing why he’s a stud today. All kinds of fine catches.

*Jameis to Brate over the middle. Somewhere, ASJ stares into space with his arms folded.

*Jameis rifles a pass about 20 yards to the Stampeder who was surrounding by defenders. Inaccurate? Joe’s rear end!

*Bucs go topless in a walkthrough drill to end practice.

I’d like to see Francis play more next week he stood out to me on Thursday. Did ASJ play on Thursday? I’m sure he did but didn’t see him make any plays. All in all I like what I saw on Thursday. Hopefully JW can be as accurate on the deep ball along the sideline as he is with the post up the middle. Brate’s catch a perfect example, it’s not easy to turn your whole body in the air as you catch a ball thrown behind you, just saying.

    Awesome notes Joe.

Jameis will take chances with the football, won’t always be pretty.

He’s a gunslinger and it must be fun to watch him work in practice.

Please do us a favor and stop waving the Bell Flag..He is not Good period…Let him go on and start a career else where

  4. scott Says:

    @DB55

ASJ…..played and made a couple of grabs…..one one behind the line of scrimmage he broke at least two tackles and got a small gain instead of a sure loss…..Looked like he was motivated.

  6. Pickgrin Says:

    Thanks Joe.

Dline gotta eat. Every snap its gonna be – “Here I come again now – baby – Like a dog in heat…”

  7. BucinJAX Says:

Thanks for the notes, Joe. I love keeping up with all this.

Joe- thanks for the update. As to JW being inaccurate, news flash, he is! Sorry that you guys won’t acknowledge the obvious. Your post on overthrows was totally BOGUS. Everyone else on that list had TONS more attempts than JW! Keep spinning the homers on this site will totally agree with you. REAL fans will understand that JW is VERY talented and a work in progress. I love him BUT he is not a franchise QB yet!

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

Nice recap, fine tuning the engine, working out the kinks and getting ready to make some Bucs history. It’s all good.

Joe’s surely you are not arguing who is the better QB??? It’s obviously MM. The Bucs are game planning around JW and doing all they can to keep him from making the BONE head plays he is prone to. The Bucs coaching staff does not trust JW.

I’ve been saying this all along. We should have drafted Mariota. But that is in the past. Turns out that some of us”haters” who dared to question drafting JW may have been right all along. Joe’s, what happened to “pro ready” and comparing him to Andrew Luck. Not so much! This is going to set the franchise back another 5 years. This is Freeman, the sequel.

Many of us who were skeptical about drafting him were called haters and not real Bucs fans. Most of us were concerned this his game would not transfer to the NFL. Soon we’ll be calling him “Canadas QB” because that is where he will be playing.

  12. Buccaneers Says:

Jameis Winston screwed all of us Freeman jersey owners by not keeping his college number. I had the duct tape out and ready to relabel that puppy, in true redneck fashion.

  13. Joe Says:

Thanks for the notes, Joe. I love keeping up with all this.

You are welcome. Joe is glad to help.

  14. SOFIERCE Says:

    Pickgrin 4 da WIN blhahaha

JW is the player and true leader we so desperately need on this team. He is giving this team an identity, a brand we can get behind of, and soon in one voice a mentality of Winning!

As any QB entering their year 2 he will face certain obstacles, however the kid is truely 100% committed @ 100% of the time and has the God given tools to work with.

I’m a fan of this man’s body of work and in turn look towards myself to be half as effective in my endeavors.

    Go Bucs!

  15. gulfcoast Says:

PICKGRIN! Lol point em out point em out! Go Bucs! F Mumbles Mariota. We did the right thing…

  16. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Pickgrin, WOW! That was an epic takedown! You can’t say you love Winston after calling him a CFL QB that will set the Bucs back 5 years. All I say is we should enjoy the ride, wherever that takes us. Winston’s one of us now. Be happy.

  17. Owlykat Says:

Every QB has to adjust to getting hit again after being safe in camp. JW will be great when the season opens. Just wait for it. Mariota didn’t even play all season last year and was not great on long passes either his first year.
