ASJ: “I Think That’s Kind Of Held Me Back”
August 9th, 2016Tweety tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins had a lot to say after practice today.
He was pumped up. He was smiling. And he was shedding light on his troubles.
“I think that’s kind of held me back,” Seferian-Jenkins said of his poor attention to detail in the past.
Joe couldn’t help but think of detail nut Greg Schiano upon hearing that. ASJ would not have been a Schiano man.
It’s interesting that the Bucs have had the same tight ends coach since 2014, Jon Embree, who played the position in the NFL. Embree did a great job developing Cameron Brate and reviving Luke Stocker, so it’s not like he’s incapable of developing talent.
“Coach [Koetter] has definitely been harping on me and getting on me, ‘If you want to be a great player, if you want to be what we want you to be, you gotta be detail oriented. You got to be doing all those things,’ ASJ said.
ASJ went on to say he knows he’s talented and he’s been seizing opportunities. Per Roy Cummings of 620wdae.com, ASJ said he used to play primarily with his body but know he’s playing more with his mind.
But it’s that mind that Bucs fans fear most, the mind that got him into this position as a backup tight end, and that led to stupid personal fouls on the field, and that led him to attack fans on Twitter.
Joe really hopes ASJ has seen the light. He’s still just 23 years old. There is hope. But that bulb will grow dim in a hurry if he can’t perform in preseason.
That’s right: preseason. No more time to wait for ASJ, especially against the future baggage handlers and practice squad players he’ll see time against.

We know he has the physical tools.
But can he figure it out mentally? I for one, sure hope so. He’s only 23, most of us were still dumb@sses at that time, but this is getting down to his last chance…

show me asj!!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!
August 9th, 2016 at 3:27 pm
year 3 still widely considered to be the time it most often comes together for receivers entering the league. obviously the player has to do his part, but the history of the league says there’s a decent chance he hasn’t peaked so long as he backs up the talk with effort
August 9th, 2016 at 3:29 pm
as a point of clarification, i’m not banking on it, just saying ASJ is not delusional for believing he can take his career in a very positive direction
August 9th, 2016 at 3:30 pm
Me too unbelievable.. Yesterday coach Koetter said during his presser after practice that”this will be a two tightend 3 WR offense”. I got excited when he said two tightened. That set is very difficult to defend. Everyone in the media is awwwing and oohinng over Bennet joining Gronk in New England. No one is foreseeing the Buccs doing similar things with they’re tightends. We about to surprise some people.

He has to tear it up in the pre season. From blocking to catching to being penalty free to keeping his mind right during the game. He is all 4 of our tight ends all rolled up in one. He has the most talent but the least amount of maturity. He needs to stop believing the hype and get down to business. He has super stud and super dud written all over him. It all depends on what side his maturity meter swings to. It swings left he’s gone it swings right this offense will be bangin! Time to take off them pullups son and put on some boxer briefs! Put on your big black boots and get to stompin!

2nd round pick asj you gotta perform or else
August 9th, 2016 at 4:16 pm
sounds good but a lot of stuff sounds good.
August 9th, 2016 at 4:26 pm
Such natural talent, if he gets his mind right we have a top 5 receiving TE.
August 9th, 2016 at 4:27 pm
He is one articulate SOB.
He will have a job in the TV booth after his career is over.
Just hope it isn’t already over.
Get it together ASJ we can really use you this year.

Some guys just take longer.
Brate’s a Harvard man. He prolly “got it” early on.
Here is what Dr. Licht-enstein should do, create Seferian-Brate:

“[Dirk Koetter] is a detail-oriented guy. If you want to be a great player, if I want to be the great player that I’m capable of being, I can be a really special player, I’ve got to be detail-oriented. And Coach Koetter is not going to let me be below that. He wants me to be a great player and he’s won’t settle for being average, he won’t settle me for being good, and he won’t really settle me for being great. I want to be special and he wants me to be special and I’m working towards that and I respect him to the fullest. I really thank God every single day that he kicked me out of practice, it was really a wake-up call and like I said, I’ve been enjoying every single moment I’ve had. Like I said, I’ve loved it, I love Coach Koetter, I love all our coaches, I love my teammates, I love the competition that we’ve got in the tight end room, I love the competition that the D-ends are bringing. It’s just been great all the way around and I’m really, like I said, seizing the opportunities and I’m loving just being out here and playing football.”
– TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Maybe he’s “getting it…”

As I tell my kids – Attitude and Effort. Study hard, keep your head down, and kick some zzz!
August 9th, 2016 at 4:55 pm
He’s a total bullshipper.
He will screw up again, just a matter of time.
Hopefully we can get some sort of trade value out of him from a needy team.
Bye bye ASJ.
Go Bucs!
August 9th, 2016 at 5:00 pm
kick some zzzz! lol Pretty sure that was supposed to be something else.
August 9th, 2016 at 5:13 pm
I’ll never understand these guys who have all of the talent in the world, have a lottery ticket right in front of them, and they just throw it away. Hopefully he realizes what he has and gets his head out of his azz.
August 9th, 2016 at 5:41 pm
We probably have two of the smartest TEs in the league……
I’m encouraged by his apparent good attitude….and it is only apparent now.
August 9th, 2016 at 5:48 pm
I’ve never stopped holding out hope for this guy. Talent is too great and he doesn’t seem like a bad human being. If this is what it takes to get him to dedicate himself to the game the way he needs then f*ck yea lol
August 9th, 2016 at 6:12 pm
Write this die I say this guy will show up!
August 9th, 2016 at 6:20 pm
Well said Dooshlarue, I am sure you were a model citizen at 23 with your head screwed on right… I must be the biggest homer on this board cos all I ever want is for each and every Buc is to be the best player they can be. Mel Kiper had him going in the 1st round, but a DUI had him drop to the 2nd round where we got him. Lack of maturity seems to be his biggest flaw. If Koetter can give him some tough love and get him to be the best Buc he can be, I hope he can turn it around. The best thing about Koetter is you know where you stand, know sugar coating anything. These guys have cruised most of their lives being told they are the greatest. When they get into the NFL, they are just another face on a roster…

Real talk Wombat.
August 9th, 2016 at 8:20 pm
good post cobra boy
ASJ is saying all .the right things, just a personal take, always felt if you take the time to communicate or even discipline someone properly.that it is a sign they are important to you.Koetter has been clear on what is expected and
ASJ potential.
August 9th, 2016 at 9:18 pm
Guys like that at age 23 will be twice as stupid at 46. I’ve seen it over and over.
August 9th, 2016 at 10:00 pm
Cobraboy, that pic is hilarious..
August 9th, 2016 at 10:26 pm
We shall see if ASJ got his wakup call and is going to be the player we all thought he would be. I love the NFl. There is no hiding or covering mistakes. You are as your play on the field. And your record will indicate where you are ranked. Batter up Mr. ASJ.
August 9th, 2016 at 10:49 pm
So he’s very articulate Dave Pear? Didn’t see you say that about Brate or Koetter. Nice backhanded compliment.
Maybe with the reports of ASJ starting to light it up in practice maybe the fire is lit under the butt cheeks.
August 9th, 2016 at 11:39 pm
ASJ is by far the most talented of the group of TE’s we have, he has great speed, great size, can make incredible catches, I hope he just puts it all together. Brate is a nice story and all, but he’s just an average TE at best with very limited upside based on his physical abilities, ASJ has no such limitations.
August 10th, 2016 at 8:28 am
Love to hear sll the positive news from ASJ. Now it’s one thing to say all the rightnthings, it’s a whole nother thing to do it. He took step 1, now it’s the biggest step in actually following thru, like others have said, I’ve never lost faith in this guy, he’s not a terrible person he’s just young n dumb, we all remember being there, and once he gets it he has the talent and ability to be a savage in this league, that’s why the bucs have not gave up on him, and will continue to try and coach him in the right direction. I have a feeling he’s gonna have his breakout year with the 2 TE formation. Excited to see what this offense can do with a healthy ASJ.

DavidBigBucsFan99,
“Nice backhanded compliment.”
It must really suck to be you.
