New Bucs wide receiver Jonathan Krause had a breakthrough season as a No. 2 receiver behind stud Jordan Matthews at Vanderbilt in 2013.
Now, with a Super Bowl ring in his pocket, Krause is busting out on the stage of Buccaneers training camp.
A cynical cat might say 24-year-old Krause has it easy. Fighting for a gig with the likes of Kenny Bell, Donteea Dye, Evan Spencer and Russell Shepard isn’t the toughest task across NFL rosters. But it would be more accurate to say Krause has made an early name for himself in Bucs camp because he’s making special catches and has top NFL speed.
And for a guy who landed in Tampa eight days ago, Krause is having little trouble adapting.
On Sunday, before Krause’s diving grab Monday that Dirk Koetter was happy to discuss, Joe talked to Krause 1-on-1. When the Bucs claimed him on waivers after his release from the Eagles, Krause knew nobody with Tampa and had no connection to the team, he said. It was all about jumping in head first to an opportunity that seemed very real.
Krause told Joe he was elated to learn Koetter’s offense has many similarities to what he ran in college at Vanderbilt — and that America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, accepted him right away and is in charge.
“A strong quarterback means everything,” Krause said. “I’m real grateful to have an opportunity with Jameis.”
After life with the Browns (2014), Patriots (2014 & 2015) and Eagles (2015 & 2016), Krause should have master’s degree on quarterback impact (and lack thereof).
Speaking on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday after Monday’s practice, Koetter praised the Bucs’ scouting staff for identifying Krause.
“He’s been a real pleasant surprise. He’s got some quickness. The guy’s got a Super Bowl ring, if I’m not mistaken,” Koetter said. “I mean, this guy’s got some confidence about him. Vanderbilt kid. He’s doing well. It’ll be interesting to see how the preseason goes with him.”

I hope this guy puts the pressure on the contenders for that position. Vandy is dandy but liquor is quicker.

“It’ll be interesting to see how the preseason goes” with the entire WR group.
Evans, VJax and Humphries are locks. Russell Shepard is highly likely to claim a spot because his special teams play is so consistently outstanding and his receiving ability continues to improve. That leaves only 1 or 2 WR roster spots open and there are at least 7 talented receivers trying to make the cut.
Murphy, Bell, Dye, Spencer, Reedy, Davis and now Krause. That’s a lot of (mostly young and still developing) talent to pick your 5th and possibly 6th receiver from. Special teams rolls will play a big part in the decision and that gives Kenny Bell an edge IMO.
It certainly will be interesting to see how it plays out.
A # of these WRs who get cut will get snatched up by other teams I betcha.

After VJax went down last year we had limited contributions from back-ups. Having capable WR depth is even more important as Jameis develops. I’m happy to see others stepping up.

I wanted to get the safety from duke in the draft. I dont know what round he went. Might of been the 3rd?? Not quite sure. But we traded up into the 2nd for a kicker (bad move IMO J.Licht)

Depth at WR was a concern coming into this camp, but it appears we have quite a few dark horses with a shot. All of a sudden Kenny Bell is a bubble player and Shepard is proving himself. Humphries has put the pressure on Murphy and Krause provides even more depth and competition. Donte Dye seems like an afterthought. I now have confidence in the coaching staff to evaluate the competition and build a quality, versatile stable of receivers. Even if they are a bunch of no namers.

Evans problem in catching the ball is he is closing his eyes when it is about there. He needs to see a shrink to figure out why he is doing that when he was not doing that his rookie year. If that doesn’t work have a hypnotist to teach him to keep his eyes open and track the ball into his hands.

Again…..I think with VJax and Murphy to an extent as the vet presence…you let the young guys earn experience….and take the spot as opposed to a roddy white, cotchery, etc.

Goal is to draft/scout young talent, and resign them to their primes…and not have to be on the waiver wire as we were the last few years.

All this talk about him having a ring is silly. He was by no means an integral part of the Patriots offense when they won it all. I’m rooting for him but who cares about the ring?

I think when the Joes mention that a player has a ring, it’s to show that he’s seen what it takes to get a Super Bowl. Even if he didn’t play much or at all, he still has the experience. I don’t know how much that means, but I guess it can’t hurt.
