Press Coverage

August 1st, 2016

Talks cornerbacks.

Joe understands many a good beer was spilled in the greater Tampa Bay area last season from fans winging a cold one against the wall when watching opposing offenses complete undefended slant passes time after time.

It was a crime. It was as if Lovie Smith was saying, “You can have a seven-yard gain but we will have a takeaway.”

Problem for Lovie was, those takeaways — which are little more than flukes and random chances — rarely happened. That led Lovie to cry each week for takeaways like a little boy whining for an ice cream cone. Meanwhile, offenses ran up and down the field virtually at will.

Well, those days are over. After practice today, defensive coordinator Mike Smith talked about utilizing press coverage on receivers and just who will play press coverage for him.

“We feel like we have some guys who can get up and play some man coverage,” Smith said. “I know that [Alterraun Verner is very good at that and so is Brent Grimes. So the two guys we have that have done it in the past will give us an opportunity to play some man coverage.”

There you have it. The days of letting receivers run free as deer in an Iowa cornfield on slant routes is over. Joe has a hunch Smith may actually instruct his corners to make some sort of physical contact with receivers at the line of scrimmage.

Knocking guys off their routes at the line? Imagine that.

Now Bucs fans can save that cherished beer, whether it be the beer of the people, Bud Light, or a snobbish craft brew.

    ——————————-

    you are killing me Joe…

  2. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Me too Tmax! Our prayers are answered.

  3. Tom Edrington Says:

Joe(s) have it wrong, even guys on this site are not stupid enough to waste a good cold beer by throwing it somewhere or at something…..come on Joe!!!

  4. Cannon Says:

How many defensive series did we see last year where the opposing offense would run twice for no gain (or negative yardage), and then complete a 11 yard slant pattern?

  5. Fsuking Says:

Whoa did Joe just praise piss water and hang good beer out to dry? I would expect more out of a website that seems so dedicated to alcohol.

  6. unbelievable Says:

    @Tom,

When we lost to the Giants in the playoffs back in 2007 I threw my beer at the wall right next to my tv. Stupid? Yes. But I had enough control over my anger not to hit the tv screen at least.

    Also, press coverage? F@ckin finally!!!!!

  7. LovieBall Says:

But this is Tampa. Play the corners 10 yards off and give up slant passes all day. It’s what we do.

  8. 813bucboi Says:

I must admit…verner has looked very good thus far during practice…would’ve had a few ints if he would’ve held on to the ball….while at practice I was talking to a guy and he mentioned that the db coach was quoted saying some cbs prefer to play on one side of the field and not shuffle back and forth….provides the cb with a comfort level which can turn into an advantage for the cb….last year we witnessed verner playing on the left, right and slot…so far during the couple of practices I been to verner has only lined up on the right side with grimes only lining up on the left side….

@JOE have you noticed the same thing and/or has mike smith mentioned or indicated anything along those lines?….GO BUCS!!!!

……AND, be willing to do so.

A Bud Light would be more TV bound than a 90 Minute DogFish IPA!

  10. dooshlarue Says:

Bud Light sucks Joe. I know the “stats” say it’s the most popular beer in America, but America is also chock full of morons!

I’ve heard this comment on several occasions: ” I love Bud Light, it doesn’t taste like beer”.

    Drink real beer sheeple.

  11. salish_seamonster Says:

“the beer of the people, Bud Light, or a snobbish craft brew.”

The beer of the people = poor quality corporate produced swillwater that only survives because of mass marketing.

“Snobbish” craft brew = beer produced by people who know what they’re doing and are passionate about doing it well.

2 visions of ‘Murica really. You can have your corporate produced imitation beer product with excessive marketing. A product based on lies. That’s the beer of Trump and ignorance. Not a surprise Joe prefers Bud Light.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I will be great to have some corners who slap opposing team’s WRs instead of their wives!!!

  13. Bucsfanman Says:

Wow salish! I’m a craft beer guy but I don’t know how you make those statements connect!
I just prefer to get to the point quicker…….DRUNK! It takes 3 Buds to 1 IPA to achieve that! Also, I’m lazy. More beer=more trips to the facilities. Zero politics involved!

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Sorry to correct you here Joe. I never have or will thow one of my expensive Sunday ales in Disgust of Buc Play. Libations are precious and expensive. I have thrown towels and flowers though….

  15. salish_seamonster Says:

^^ Well, it was a little bit of a stretch. 🙂

  16. Buc since '74 Says:

Butt Light blows. Try a Stella.

  17. Jeff Says:

Lovie was beyond incopotent, but his worst quality as a head coah was his inability to adapt to a changing game. He’ll never coach in the NFL again. Not even a position coach. Mark the tape.

  18. GhostofSchiano Says:

Knocking guys off their routes at the line? Imagine that.

    Oh my, a physical defense, haven’t seen that since 2003 / 2004?

  19. SOEbuc Says:

Bud Lights a cheap draft at the bar thats not so bad. Im not gonna pay $7 for a bottle of Corona (aka imported mexican piss). If I’m not at the bar I go with a the very classy natty light. I never pass on a Samuel Jackson though. IT’LL GET YA DRUNK!

  20. salish_seamonster Says:

If I’m drinking a light lager, the Mexican beers like Pacifico, Sol, and even Corona taste way better than any of the corporate ‘murican pisswaters.

  21. dooshlarue Says:

I wonder what ever happened to Ice Man malt liquor, made in Tampa I do believe?……..and the best dam .79 cent quart I ever tasted in the mid 80s- 90s.

Talk about getting you stinko………oh man!

  22. Buc4lyfe79 Says:

    @Joe
“Snobbish craft brew”??? WTH Man?! Good Beers GOOD BEER!!!

  23. AC Says:

Doesn’t look like Verner will be going anywhere soon.. unless a trade of some sort. Thought he was a big pick up when we got him from TENN. hopefully he balls out this year

  24. Joe Says:

That’s the beer of Trump and ignorance. Not a surprise Joe prefers Bud Light.

    Trump doesn’t drink.

Joe has yet to have a craft beer where he said to himself, “Damn, there is no way I can drink a Bud Light again.”

And, yes, Joe has drank (and enjoyed) dozens of craft beers. Also drank a lot of swill packaged as craft beer. Just because it has an artsy label and a funky name and is not brewed in Milwaukee, St. Louis or Colorado with an outrageous mark-up doesn’t mean it is good.

  25. Joe Says:

If I’m not at the bar I go with a the very classy natty light.

Joe’s lawyer, who bills at $350 an hour, drinks Natty Light. When he last invited Joe this summer for drinks and dinner, Joe decided to drink his last Natty Light just to hack him off. 🙂

  26. 813bucboi Says:

YUENGLING!!!!!!!!bud light aint bad tho…….GO BUCS!!!!

  27. jb Says:

It’s clear that the Joe’s enjoy looking down their nose at the craft beer drinking, politically left believing hipsters. WTF????

  28. salish_seamonster Says:

Sure Joe, there’s plenty of things labelled “craft” beer that are nothing special. I’m not saying that any of it’s good, just because it’s brewed in small batches and has a fancy label or a clever name. I taste the beer. If you have never tasted a craft beer that didn’t make you want to turn away from Bud Light forever, then you haven’t tasted any good ones, or your taste buds are dead, or you just don’t care how the beer tastes.

  29. Joe Says:

If you have never tasted a craft beer that didn’t make you want to turn away from Bud Light forever, then you haven’t tasted any good ones, or your taste buds are dead, or you just don’t care how the beer tastes.

World of Beer in downtown St. Pete used to be Joe’s hangout. Had many, many different craft beers. Some really, really good. None made Joe swear off Bud Light.

  30. salish_seamonster Says:

    That’s unfortunate, Joe.

  31. America's Commenter Says:

Bud Light tastes like lightly flavored water to me. I’m not all that into craft beers, unless you classify Guiness. Smithwick’s, and Hacker-Pschoor Oktoberfest as craft beers…

  32. canadian bucsfan Says:

    @ joe
Next time your up in Canada I can give you a few beers that just might turn ya off that bud light. We have some good stuff up here.

  33. LargoBuc Says:

    Kona pipeline. Nuff said.
Anyway, the secondary may have been the single biggest point of frustration under Lovie. If it’s 3rd and 2, my goodness will you please play some bump and run! Give our d line a shot at picking up a sack.

  34. phreakybucfan Says:

You’ll never get Joe off of Bud Light. It’s the beer being sloshed around in the freaking logo!

  35. SOEbuc Says:

Trump doesn’t drink? What is it that has killed those trillions of brain cells

  36. Kevin Says:

This is a dream come true for me. Ive been dreaming of seeing a bucs defense jam recievers at the line to disrupt theyre routes. Sure man coverage can be more vulnerable to deep passes, but your.not going to.get picked apart for.four quarters. Im just hoping Smith is as good as everyone says. My only thought from him in atlanta, is why didnt he step in and help with the defense and save his job. That D was just as bad as ours….sometimes worse. Hope he proves me.wrong. I am.geeked to see some press thougj. Spence, mccoy and the rest of the line will benefit from it!

  37. unbelievable Says:

    Pipeline! Good stuff Largo!

  38. salish_seamonster Says:

We have some of the best small breweries out here in the Pacific NW. Drinking fresh local beer on tap… that will put an end to your Bud Light appreciation, Joe.

How’s that Cigar City stuff? I hear great things, but can’t get it out here.

  39. BIG IRISH SECTION 318 Says:

I would never throw my Guinness against the wall.
Maybe the empty pint bottle, but never the beer!
    What a bunch of blarney!!!

  40. Joe Says:

Sorry Monster. May have drank 50 different craft beers (draft). Still loyal and enjoy Bud Light. No apologies.

St. Arnold Summer Pils out of Houston is closest Joe Jos ever came to switching from Bud Light and Joe hates pilsner beer. That’s how good it is.

St. Arnold is Joe’s favorite craft beer joint.

  41. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Doosh

You’d really make fun of me. I’m a beer wimp. I hate full bodied craft beers and mostly drink Mich Ultra. My wife and I like to drink what we call water beer.
I’m no beer connoisseur that’s for sure.

Now Vodka…that’s a different story…and if we have to talk about “buds” I’m not thinking beer if you get my drift.

  42. Joe Says:

I’m a beer wimp. I hate full bodied craft beers and mostly drink Mich Ultra.

Sort of like Joe St. Pete. Joe doesn’t like “heavy” beers. So many craft beers are “heavy,” or too rich.

  43. Owlykat Says:

Smith did an outstanding job as DC in Jax. The reason there are so many interceptions in practice is it is very tough for a QB to figure out the defense before he throws the ball. It is great training for Winston going against our defense.

  44. gilhealy Says:

    Anchor Steam! Darn good brew.
