Adam Humphries Named No. 3 Receiver
August 1st, 2016Dirk Koetter spoke to Joe and assembled media this morning and decided to grab a proverbial trumpet.
Koetter, after five training camp practices, named Adam Humphries the Buccaneers’ No. 3 wide receiver. In fact, Koetter hinted he should have told everyone yesterday.
Joe hates to ruin lunch for the Kenny Bell Mob, but it’s not about them today. It’s all about Humphries, the 5-11 tryout receiver from Clemson tho made the Bucs’ 53-man roster last year but was later cut in October, and then he returned to have a sound season.
Simply stated: Humphries caught what was thrown his way 27 balls out of 40 targeted in his direction.
“Good football players come in all shapes and sizes,” Koetter said.
Joe asked America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, about the news.
“I’m not surprised by that at all,” Jameis said. “Adam is a great player for us. He’s a third-down machine for us. He’s had a great camp, and last year he was one of my best targets. You think about the first play of the year (an interception against Tennessee thrown in Humphries direction), me and that guy bounced back from that quickly and had a great season together.”
Mike Evans was all smiles.
“He knows how to get open. We call him first-down Hump,” Evans said, noting how hard Humphries works behind the scenes.
Rudy!

Yes, Rudy played for Clemson. Corrected, thanks.

No nonsense from Dirk. Love it. Lovie it.
August 1st, 2016 at 11:45 am
If we are making ourselves in the image of the Patriots – that’s not a bad thing.
August 1st, 2016 at 11:46 am
Great decision by the coaching staff to give this guy an opportunity. Great job by this guy to reward the decision makers.
August 1st, 2016 at 11:48 am
Any news on how Andre Davis is performing at camp? Love to see the local talent from USF make the roster.
August 1st, 2016 at 11:48 am
What a confidence booster for #11. He could team up with Jameis for the next 3-10 years. best of luck to you young man!
August 1st, 2016 at 11:51 am
Sorry, but Bell’s got to earn it first. This seems like a no-brainer. We’ll see. Good job Hump!
August 1st, 2016 at 11:53 am
Humphries, Pow… to the moon.
August 1st, 2016 at 11:53 am
I’m a Packer fan but got a lot of respect for the Buccaneers been watching football since 1980 and Doug Williams was the first black QB I had seen, and you guys did it when it wasn’t cool to have one. Glad you guys got a team that looks like it’s going to do somethings best of luck my friends.
August 1st, 2016 at 11:55 am
Said it last year , Guy is a baller , Congrats
August 1st, 2016 at 11:57 am
Love dirk’s decisiveness. No dragging crap out and turning non stories into stories. Bucs need help at wr simple as that.
August 1st, 2016 at 12:00 pm
DON’T LET GO ADAM!!!!
August 1st, 2016 at 12:04 pm
I can tell you first hand at yesterdays practice that Humphries caught everything his way…the connection between he and jameis is evident….on one play jameis threaded the needle between LVD, Jude and the safety and hump made a great catch….on that particular play the defenders were in great position but jameis put the ball where only hump could catch it…I believe jameis was 4 for 4 throwing to hump yesterday….he and vjax were the most consistent wr’s yesterday….humps routes were crisps which allowed him to gain separation in and out of his breaks from the defender….and he looks to be our best option at punt return…he caught every punt yesterday while reedy or dye(15 or 17 I could see the exact number) dropped one….happy for BIG HUMP….he busted his a$$, worked hard and is now being rewarded….GO BUCS!!!!
August 1st, 2016 at 12:04 pm
Good job Hump! We can use a undersized go-getter!
August 1st, 2016 at 12:05 pm
Rudy is a decent receiver but lacks the skillset to be a adaquit slot receiver
out of the 27 catches when did he ever break out of the intial contact and run after catch for 15 plus yards. catsh and drop…just like all our other recievers except chuck sims
he doesnt have the quick twitch shake, stop and go explosion nor the physical stiff arm to break tacklers
***dropoff Rudy, Dye, Bell and a 5th round pick to Jacksonville during joint practice and bring back Rashad Greene to Tampa
August 1st, 2016 at 12:08 pm
Just rewards for the little engine that could. Keep it up Humphries.
August 1st, 2016 at 12:11 pm
Love it! This kid has got it. Way to go Hump!!!
August 1st, 2016 at 12:18 pm
@Kobe- Keep in mind he was an undrafted rookie FA last year. I would assume that he was working on the things you mentioned in the off-season. Truth is, he just has to make it to the sticks.
August 1st, 2016 at 12:19 pm
Kobe, as of right now you are all alone in this room. hlad your not calling the shots. Hump is the man!!!
August 1st, 2016 at 12:20 pm
3rd & Hump?
August 1st, 2016 at 12:25 pm
@dick….dre is a good friend of mine….yesterday at practice he was running with the two’s right behind vjax…he lined up on the left side of the field all day…don’t remember glennon or griffin throwing his way but he took every rep serious and didn’t have to be told where to line up….I think the staff likes his ability to run block because they ran to his side a bunch of times with payton baber making a few nice runs(10+yards)…during the period when special teams were on the main field right in front of the fans wr’s and db’s were on the second field working together…I could see dre beat josh robinson on what looked to be a skinny post route….all in all he look good but its telling that dirk has named hump as the #3 wr….I like this approach because its putting players on notice….a job can be won or lost week to week….looks like dirk wants his wr core set some jameis can build that chemistry between them all….I think it will come down to his preseason performance and if he can contribute on special teams because Russell shepard looks like he will have a bigger role on offense this year…GO BUCS!!!!
August 1st, 2016 at 12:30 pm
@Kobe….have you been to a practice?….I can tell you that it is obvious that hump has been working on his explosiveness and quickness this offseason…he still may lack top end speed but he did look a step quicker in and out of his breaks….hump will surprise you this season….GO BUCS!!!!
August 1st, 2016 at 12:40 pm
Catch the ball. Period.
The big guys will get him one on ones inside, just run sharp routes and Winston will get him the ball.
August 1st, 2016 at 12:40 pm
@LuvmyBucs
3rd and Hump That’s great!
August 1st, 2016 at 12:44 pm
A yo appreciate that David. Its a shame a fan from another team can see clearer than some that have been fans forever bro. We coming man.
August 1st, 2016 at 12:53 pm
Think about lasting impact of this move. Competition should only increase. All players on this squad understand they can make the the team and play if they give it their all, or at least that’s what Humphries did. However his crowning will only inspire the others, hell that’s all proof they need that they can do it too … Time to get to work @asj @kennybell @danvitale
August 1st, 2016 at 12:57 pm
I hope so because Defenses have 1 year of tape on Jameis now
Defenses will not sit back like the Philly game and play zone and wait for Jameis to make a mistake . He has proven he can hit small windows down the field and score without pressure
Jameis, in 2016 will be the most blitzed QB
MANKINS WILL BE MISSED!
Defenses is going to be stacking the box with 9 players and run blitz every hole
Tampa/Jameis is going to have to show they can consistently move down the field by the short passing / 2 second ball is out attack to loosen up the stacked line
Our receivers will have to consistently beat the press because they will not give us 4/5 second jameis 2 Evans deep route completions freely
August 1st, 2016 at 12:59 pm
I like Humphries and don’t question Koetter’s judgement…..but I’m curious about the timing…..he’s not only sending a message to Humphries and the fans…..but a message to all the other receivers in camp.
We now have Vjax, ME13 & Humphries…..and very likely Shepard (yes, I think he’s close to a lock)
So that means we have 2 slots left (I believe we will carry 6 receivers especially if one is a KR/PR……
August 1st, 2016 at 1:02 pm
Kobe Faker there aren’t that many slot WRs that do whatever you’re takin about lol. If anything it’s teams 1/2s lining up in the slot and being playmakers like Odell Beckam / Anotonio Brown.
Hell Randall Cobb is thought to be one of the best slot guys and he was their #1 last year and struggled hard with any sort of YAC.
Welker/ Edelman never made/make tons of YAC plays unless you count 5 yards after the catch as a big play. They were good at getting open in short field and catching balls in traffic and maneuvurin get for a few extra yards but typically not big plays.
Hump has very similar athleticism and size as Edelman. Not as athletic but not too far off
August 1st, 2016 at 1:16 pm
Thank you David King..all welcomed here!
August 1st, 2016 at 1:52 pm
Now if only ASJ could play with the heart and determination Humphries displays….
August 1st, 2016 at 1:57 pm
He moves so much like Julian Edelamn..same jump quickness..even body size..
Still want Andre Davis to make the team though…
August 1st, 2016 at 1:57 pm
Good analysis here by Bucs fans. Great read all the way down.
August 1st, 2016 at 2:03 pm
He caught 27 of 40. Nice! One of those missed would have been Jameis’ rookie touchdown record of 6 in one game. But I digress…
August 1st, 2016 at 2:04 pm
Both Adam Humpheries and Cameron Brate steped up for us last year when we needed them. They brought alot of heart. Congrats to Humpheries. I hope he holds on to that spot, pun intended.
August 1st, 2016 at 2:21 pm
Brate and Humphries..so happy they have proved their worth..I am one happy woman today…
GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!
August 1st, 2016 at 2:52 pm
I pointed out Hump last year before he played in the regular season. Naturally I compare him Wes Welker because they both are white and have small statures but also because they are the willing recipients of passes after going over the middle or whatever it takes to get a first down. i’m a little surprised that Hump was named the 3rd WR so early. It lends us some insight on how Bell is performing which seems to be inconsistent. Louis Murphy is on the outside looking in and I think it is between he and Bell on who snatches the last WR spot.
August 1st, 2016 at 3:03 pm
Do the Humpty hump, do the Humpty hump!!
August 1st, 2016 at 4:11 pm
Bell Brigade reporting for duty, Sir!!!!!! Not really news with Murphy coming off injured reserve, Bell missing a year, and Hump having the experience from last year at that spot. Will he hold onto the spot by season’s end is the real question…
August 1st, 2016 at 4:23 pm
Exactly! Not sure why so many folks think he should be gifted a job when lesser known receivers are making plays (in pads).
August 1st, 2016 at 4:30 pm
Not on IR. Murph is on the PUP list.
August 1st, 2016 at 5:05 pm
But in all honesty this isn’t very surprising, Kenny Bell is a year behind Humphries after all. this spells death for dye moreso than bell tho
August 1st, 2016 at 5:15 pm
His stature, style, and demeanor remind us all of Wes Welker. Let’s hope he has a similar career with the Bucs!
August 1st, 2016 at 5:47 pm
Bell seems more likely to be considered a backup on the outside. reports of good start-stop quickness might translate well into the slot but if he’s supposed to be a big play threat they should be developing him to line up opposite a big flanker in certain packages
August 1st, 2016 at 5:48 pm
in other words, Humphries may be the bucs starting slot reciever and thus their “number three wideout”, but i think if VJax or Evans were to miss any time they’d want somebody else to line up outside rather than just plugging humphries in as the #2
August 1st, 2016 at 6:01 pm
Shades of Wes Welker!
August 1st, 2016 at 7:01 pm
I love my Hump, My Hump
August 1st, 2016 at 7:04 pm
My lovely Rudy Hump
August 1st, 2016 at 7:19 pm
Another Wes Welker and possibly could turn out to be even better.
August 1st, 2016 at 9:51 pm
PRB…you can do better than that.
Nice job Humphries.
August 1st, 2016 at 10:25 pm
Perhaps he needs to trim down that Afro Thunder a little bit huh?

As a SCAR fan, I hate Clemson, but I’m happy for Humphries. I do worry about what this says about the rest of our receivers though.
August 2nd, 2016 at 7:30 am
Tampa Bays version of Julian Edellman. Every team can use a guy like Adam. Congrats. But I think it was gifted to hi because Murphy is on the pup list. IDK if that would of happened had Louis been healthy. Either way I’m happy for him and you know your gonna get a 100% from Adam every play.
August 2nd, 2016 at 8:04 am
Congrats to Hump. He proved himself last season and the injury to our veteran #3 WR created the opportunity for Hump to showcase his talent.
Potential (Bell) is great for post-draft, pre-season and TC press hype. However, as it’s been said: Football is played on the field, not in the training room.
At this point I sincerely hope that Bell will be able to rise to this challenge. The coach he’s got to impress first is the new “no-nonsense” WR coach, not Koetter.
Hump has also won the respect of his QB who was a big Bell fan in TC.
Let’s hope that we are able to develop WR’s that can perform under pressure and contribute during RS games, when it counts.
August 2nd, 2016 at 5:31 pm
lol Nah, that’s as creative as it gets
You know you liked it
