Toes On The Cones!
July 28th, 2016When the Bucs were led by former commander Greg Schiano, the current defensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes was a stickler for details.
His famous line was was hollering at the team during stretching exercises during one of his first practices, “Toes on the line!”
It seems the Bucs, or at least wide receiver Louis Murphy, is turning back the clock to the Schiano era.
After Schiano was run (Joe still wants to know who was that colossal jackass of a radio executive responsible for those shameful billboards around town. Joe hopes the SOB is selling used cars in Columbus, Ga.), the Bucs brought in Lovie Smith, who was supposed to be easy going with the players and a professional. My, how the penalty flags flew.
Well, it seems Murphy has had enough of the nonsense and he has personally seen to it that the Bucs start tightening their belts and using their heads, so fellow receiver Mike Evans said yesterday when asked about cutting down on the flags.
“In training camp we’ll have to do more things discipline-wise,” Evans said. “But Louis Murphy always, we gotta stay behind cones, he’s always getting on us about staying behind cones. After a dropped pass or something or a fumble, we do push-ups. Doing the little things like that will help I think.”
Now Joe is starting to see why America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, a Seminole, and Murphy, a Gator, are so tight. Though college enemies, their heads are wired the same.
Last year, Logan Mankins noted that whenever the offensive line jumped offsides in practice, all of the offensive linemen had to run laps. Jameis jumped in on the first day and said, “No, we’re a team!” and trudged along with the linemen. Soon, without anyone saying a word, the rest of the offense joined in as well.
Now Murphy has receivers doing push-ups when they screw up. Joe loves this!
Schiano may be gone, but for Murphy, it’s time to get the toes on the cones.

Evans wasn’t clear on who enforced the push-ups…I believe from the soundbite it is of the coaches choosing….Joe. Evans didn’t really elaborate on what staying behind the cones meant, other than to be conscious of doing so in practice.
Les Steckel would be proud…..

Just finished watching the interviews on Buccaneers.com. So excited! The off season is finally over! Hope to see Murphy out on the field soon, sounds like a leader our WRs need.
July 28th, 2016 at 6:09 am
If only he can play all year.
July 28th, 2016 at 7:14 am
good luck to all those bucs hopefully we stay Healthy throughout camp and preseason
July 28th, 2016 at 7:43 am
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah………just score one more point than your opponent and you will have an awesome season…..!!
July 28th, 2016 at 8:12 am
lmao les steckel, the offensive saviour cordinator from Tennessee that was going to take us higher with erik zier lmao hahahahaha dungy sucked
July 28th, 2016 at 9:51 am
Okay…I really had not been caring less about Louis Murphy until hearing this. He’s an average WR at best.
But if he is buying in and stepping up as a leader, maybe he’ll play better too.
(and just because he can get 500 yards receiving doesn’t make him a great #3)

@chromolly
Dungy did not suck. He just to be hands off the offense, just like Gruden should have kept his hands off the defense. With a good OC and a good QB, Dungy would have gotten a SB here too.
Even so, Les Steckel DID break the record for most points scored in a single season in Tampa the one year he was here.
July 28th, 2016 at 9:56 am
Murphy can not play…. simple as that. Sounds like his future is coaching or as Jameis’s personal assistant. If Murphy is anything mire than the 5th receiver bucs are screwed.

Dung

@chromolly
Oh, and by the way…Tony Dungy won more games in Tampa than any coach in their history, including Jon Gruden.

Dungy is the most overrated head coach of all time… he had 4 good years in tampa thats it. He failed simple as that. Malcom Glazer purchasing the team was the reason for turn around not dungy. Malcom Glazer set the standards and dungy was unable to reach those standards and was rightfully canned. Dungy is a media darling. Dungy’s legend is far greater than his actual accomplishments and its a disgrace he is entering the hall of fame before Tom Flores and Jimmy Johnson. Like the pro bowl the hall of fame is just a popularity contest for media darlings like dungy. The hall used to be for the best of the best not average head coaches who were one dimensional. Dungy’s career under .500 playoff record is disgraceful and hardly worthy of hall of fame consideration much less enshrinement. Dont even get me started on his pathetic coaching tree. Tomlin was not a dungy guy no matter how you cut it. Tomlin was with dungy 1 year.

Once again you are wrong
Gruden 57 wins Do know wrong dungy 54
July 28th, 2016 at 10:13 am
Yeah, who did put the ditch Schiano billboards up? I’m already on the record as supporting Schiano, give him Lovie’s two years and the Bucs would undeniably be a better team today, hands down imo. I know, in that scenario Winston may not have landed here. I have to believe Schiano’s play until the clock reads zero with the late rushes on opponents kneel down plays prompted the billboards. Dirty rotten scoundrels.
July 28th, 2016 at 10:19 am
@tmaxcon….they have the same amount of rings so who cares…they both got canned by the bucs….GO BUCS!!!!
July 28th, 2016 at 10:25 am
Being the first Black Head Coach to win the SB, he gets in maybe for that reason alone, I’m fine with it because he deserves it! Simple as that!
July 28th, 2016 at 11:11 am
What Bonzai meant to say was that Dungy has the highest winning % of any Bucs head coach.
And btw, That superbowl is not possible w/o the contributions of both Dungy and Gruden.
July 28th, 2016 at 11:18 am
Largo
Dungy was coaching the colts defense the year bucs won the superbowl. Dungy had zero to do with bucs suerbowl just another example of the legend of dungy being greater than reality…. by your logic sam wyche was responsible for bucs superbowl also…

And another thing the Ravens coaching staff won a superbowl with dilfer. Yet Dungy failed with dilfer. Ravens team had a similar team make up and defense first philosophy obviously ravens had a better head coach.
July 28th, 2016 at 12:17 pm
@tmax…wrong….dilfer just figured out how NOT to lose a game with the ravens…..either way gruden and dungy both got canned with the bucs and both have a ring so whats your point….maybe your mad because gruden will never be a HOF coach like dungy….GO BUCS!!!!
July 28th, 2016 at 12:29 pm
For the record, I was fully supporting the billboards to fire Schiano.

You are right i am mad that a underserving and unqualified coach dungy gets in the hall of fame for reasons other than his actual accomplishments. Popularity, skin color and media bias have no place in the discussion when choosing hall of fame members. Your entitled to your opinion but the bottom line is ravens won with dilfer and dungy failed…. this is not about gruden its about the hall of fame lowering its standards

Tom Flores is the first minority to win a superbowl not dungy. Next i bet you are going to try and explain why one minority is different from another.
July 28th, 2016 at 2:37 pm
Dungy did have a lot to do with the roster of the Super bowl team. He and Rich McKay built most of that roster. Dungy did have a problem with offense, clearly. I’ll also go on record as thinking that Dungy is not quite hall worthy. On Flores, underrated coach, two rings. Maybe, probably deserves HOF. I don’t really consider Hispanics minorities since most are technically caucausian. That’s not supposed to matter anyway.

Let me step in here! This league was started in 1920, with the first black head coach being Fritz Pollard of the Akron Pros while playing running back at the SAME time! 68 years go by before another black head coach is hired (Art Shell), 68 f$&?king long years, no matter what stat-sheet you look at, feast your eyes on that stat, this is more than enough to give the first black head coach to win the SB an invite thru the Hall of Fame doors, this is not about being liked by no media, and Tmaxcon this just might be about the color of his skin…….but skin color didn’t keep out all the white Hall of Famers!
