Joe is in disbelief over what was uttered by veteran Bucs beat writer Rick Stroud this morning on WDAE-AM 620.
Joe even stormed out of JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters and onto the sidewalk to wave an American Flag for all to see.
Stroud had a take on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, that really sent Joe’s head spinning. During a discussion about sophomore slumps and quarterbacks, Stroud said fear of a second-year slide surely applies across Tampa Bay fandom.
“You’d naturally be concerned as a Bucs fan,” Stroud said, before clarifying that he’s a writer not a Bucs fan.
Man, Joe’s not sure who Stroud mingles with among the real people, but Joe doesn’t know any fans worried about Jameis regressing in his second season. That line of thinking is way off Joe’s radar. And yes, Joe is a Bucs fan.
Earlier this summer, Joe penned a series on the Top-10 Bucs X-factors for 2016. Jameis checked in at No. 7. Truly, Joe has no worries about Jameis taking a half step backwards. Joe’s only question is whether Jameis will progress significantly or only take a baby step.
Stroud later added that the Tampa Bay Times is preparing to release data showing how second-year QBs with eight or more starts under their belts usually progress in Year 2. Cue the PFF Tribe! Joe’s rubber mallet is prepared to hammer his skull repeatedly.

Jameis is the least of bucs worries. Which week McCoy ends up on IR or how many games McDonald and Akeem Spence miss are the biggest concerns.

Cmon Stroud. I get it, you got to be unbiased, yeah we know. But his writing style, its just so dry and just not my taste. I may be walking a razor wire here, but Stroud just comes off like he could care less about the Bucs, despite covering them and this market for years. He’s just so kind of generic.
Now as for the story, I’m not worried about Jameis. He showed that you can not just stack the box against him. And since that dosen’t work, they will almost always have a running game to even things out. I’m more worried about Evans, but I said it before, look at his time at A&M and as a rookie. Drops were NEVER a problem. He will be fine. Jameis, Doug, Evans and the o line lead by Koetter, this offense will be more than okay.

One thing is kind of funny ,Joe has his very own Miko and Joe has to support his right to say it.What s good for Miko is good for Rick Stroud.

Rick Stroud (Captain Obvious) is boring who cares what he says. He never brings anything original to the table. His pieces are predictable and uninspiring. Lets move on.

If Jameis weren’t so hardworking, I’d be worried. He probably can’t do any more than he is doing to work on his game, so why worry? If he has a down year despite the work, so be it… Sh!t happens. We still have our QB for the long haul, and a lot of other good pieces to work with. This is still a developing team, and I’m patient as long as the overall direction is positive.

As for the armstrength,not qualified to judge that.I did wonder if playing both baseball relief pitcher and Qb would take a toll on his arm.

Jameis doesn’t lack physical power in his arms, hips, legs, or any of the areas you need to have good arm strength. In fact, as a pitcher and an outfielder at Florida State, he had one of the strongest arms on the team. The problem is with his mechanics. He drops his too slowly and doesn’t plant his front foot, even when not under pressure. The result of that is that he is using his arm exclusively to deliver the football. These are mechanical holdovers from playing baseball up until the draft in 2015. Anyone but a QB can play both football and baseball, but a QB doesn’t have the time or the ability to switch his mechanics back and forth, to be both a baseball player and a good QB.
I think you’ll see Keotter and the QB quarterback working on these mechanical issues. He has the build and the hand size to be an above average arm if the can right these flaws, so the more he repeats his football mechanics and the farther he gets away from the pitching rotation he had been using, the stronger his delivery will be.
Football outsiders says arm strength is a hard thing to correct, but when due to mechanical issues rather than frame or hand size, it is believed to be one of the easier problems to solve.

@Bob in Valrico If Winston we 5’10” with Alex Smith sized hands, this would be something to be concerned about. Given Winston’s size, hand size, and commitment to fitness this off season, this will probably be an issue pundits wont admit they brought up, by this time next year. It’s fixable in his particular case.
The bigger issue, until Winston gets enough games under his belt, and several years of film study, is his inability to read underneath coverage in a zone or hybrid zone D.

JW3 should improve from year one to year two, but I expect his overall performance to be LESS this year, since the likely level of competition should be much greater.
Last year Jameis and the Bucs played only four games total against defensive teams ranked in the top 12 by overall game stats on NFL.com. Those opponents included two games against the Panthers (ranked 6th overall), and one each against the Titans and Texans. His statistical performance in those games:
Carolina 1st game: 26 of 43 for 287 yds, 2 TDs, and 4 INTs. QBR 57.
Carolina 2nd game: 29 of 47 for 325 yds, 0 TDs, and 2 INTs. QBR 64.6
Tennessee: 16 of 33 for 210 yds, 2 TDs, and 2 INTs. QBR 64.
Houston: 17 of 36 for 261 yds, 1 TD, and 1 INT. QBR 59.3
Totals = 88 of 159 for 1083 yds, 5 TDs, and 9 INTs. In those four games the Bucs offense scored a total of 56 points = 14 ppg, and much of that came during so-called “garbage time”.
I know and fully acknowledge that the rankings change from year to year, but this year’s schedule has 6 games against defenses that were ranked in the top 7 last year, doesn’t include games against most of the terrible defenses like PHA, NYG, WASH, IND, and JAX were this year. Frankly, I would like to know which teams you all think we’re going to beat for those ten wins many of you are predicting.

David Rogers – yeah, I actually responded to that writer in defending his arm strength. The problem is mechanics I agree…..the velocity just isnt where it should be, especially with pressure in his face, he can’t solely rely on arm strength an expect ok results every time. He’ll get better at reading defenses (still misses the open man while forcing one into tight coverage at times), but must learn to get rid of the ball quick ala the greats (Brady, Manning, etc.). Also stop throwing off this back foot and perhaps to learn to hold the ball high near his ear hole to limit/prevent the elongated motion. Sometimes when he steps into throws hell also step sideways. You dont throw an 95 mph fastball or a football over the pike house in tally without some arm strength. Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL network compared his arm strength to Rodgers coming out of college last year…he has worked with george whitfield again this offseason and koetter has enough experience to help in that department. he’s in better shape as well so maybe he’ll be able to get more torque on this throws and be able to quick enough in the pocket now to set-up better mechanically and throw with more precision/accuracy. Getting his full compliment of receivers will also help….

Carr and Bortles progressed in year 2, I see no reason why Jameis won’t as well. I just hope he cuts back on the INTs more than Bortles did.

I agree Joe, starting last season I was sure Winston was a terrible pick. 8 games later I was sold that Winston is the future of Tampa bay and that licht is a genius.

the reason I made the comment about the toll on his arm is that it was reported last year his arm was tired ,believe before training camp
If you were talking about accuracy big hands would certainly help that.and I agree that footwork would also help.I have seen him throw a pass that he wasn’t turned to his receiver.his feet were pretty close to parallel.Just like you I believe he will work his tail off to get better.

Jameis won’t be much better if at all nor will the offense. You guys ever heard the expression if your not getting better your getting worse. Tell me a potential proven difference maker we’ve added?? I don’t wanna hear bell and vitals. Or any other late round picks with no track record.

Atlanta had 4 turnovers in 1st game last year, and 2 in the 2nd, and we scratched out two wins last year. They were 8-8. Are they in decline after 6-1 start?
The Rams have beaten us in the past, including leading 28-6 after three quarters last year with ?Case Keenum at QB. Is Goff worse than him?
Have to admit, we did whomp the Romo-less Cowboys 10-6 this year. They were 12-4 the year before with him though.
Agree that SF is a game we probably could win, though we haven’t done so well historically on west coast trips.
Oakland was 7-9 last year, and seems to be much improved, with Carr and Amari Cooper.
Chicago is another game I have hopes we can win, but last year scored only 21 points, with a fumble recovery on their 4 yard line, and a Hail Mary to ASJ as time ran out. Alshon Jeffery and Martellus Bennett did not play vs. Bucs.
Denver is a home game, against the Super Bowl champion Broncos, who won with a stifling defense, that completely shut down Cam and company.
At first, you say a split with Carolina, but then a sweep to get to 10 wins?? It seems like a long time since we’ve beaten them in even one game let alone two!
Also, it seems you have us at 6-2 at home. When is the last time that has happened?

Rick Stroud has always been a sham. He’s consistently made up his own version of news, claiming secret sources that everyone knows do not exist for him.
And he has also been among the first in the media to stir up trouble for the Bucs by making things up. I’ll be glad when he goes away.

87- I never said JW would take a step back. Let me say it again, when you look at the tape, he is not very accurate. Go watch all 16 games, I did. Many of his stats were racked up in garbage time.

Barring the wrong injuries (#3) or MRSA lol we are going to win 10 games.
Again this is not about the schedule!!! It’s about us! The NFL is built on parity.
It’s not freaking College football where you might have 2-3 really challenging games each year. Who is going to beat Bama, FSU, or OSU…the number of college teams capable of that can fit on a very small sheet of paper…maybe a half dozen or so.
Who can beat the Broncos…or the NE Patriots….ON ANY GIVEN SUNDAY!
AGAIN….Schiano’s Bucs with MG8…who btw is still on the team and an excellent backup…had the Seattle Seahawks whipped until Schiano showed his coaching chops and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
Think about that! In Seattle’s SB year…an excellent team…the Bucs should have won…and should have done it ON THE WEST COAST..against the best team in the league in their house! We have better coaches this year than Schiano!!!!!
