“Uneducated”
July 16th, 2016It isn’t just Joe who sometimes wonders what type of narcotics the PFF tribe inhales.
So too does good guy Gil Arcia of TheBayCave.com.
Recently, the PFF tribe suggested the Bucs have the second-worst defensive front-seven in the NFL. Joe believed the tribe was on to something there, but didn’t think the Bucs earned a No. 31 ranking because Joe firmly disagreed with their assessment of Kwon Alexander. The tribe believes Kwon is somewhat overwhelmed in the NFL.
Instead, Joe thinks Kwon is a legitimate force and was an impact player last year. So too does Arcia. And he lashed out at the spreadsheeters.
[We] don’t say a player heard the wrong call or was out of position because, well, we aren’t the coaches or players on the field or in practice meetings. We may even go as far as saying “perhaps” a player was out of position. Perhaps. Still, it’s nothing like what these keyboard and stat geek warriors continue to do to Buccaneers linebacker Kwon Alexander.
After their stupid and idiotic claim that Alexander was not as good as many thought last season, the glorified keyboard nerds at Pro Football Focus have continued this offseason to pile on his rookie campaign and their latest falls nothing short of that.
Arcia goes on to roast the tribe. It’s an entertaining read.
Arcia makes a great point about NFL analysts who try to judge from afar, not just the PFF tribe, but network analysts all the way down. How do these guys know player assignments unless they are in the huddle or are in position group meetings?
This is nothing less than guesswork, often bad guesswork.
It’s one thing to have a well-placed source you can call or text to find out. Joel Buchsbaum made a career out of this. Joe isn’t so sure the spreadsheeters at PFF have these types of inside sources. Joe would be shocked, for example, if Bill Belicheat fielded calls from them as he did often with Buchsbaum.

Speaking for Pablo
“Kwon passes the eye test for Pablo……that takeaway play from Hulio Hones did it for Pablo…..Kwon gets a free table dance from Pablo”

Speaking for me
GhengisKwon will set the league on fire this year.

Really? I’m moderated for using Kwon’s nickname???

PFF just needs something to write about this time of year. The fact that anybody on the defense last year showed up, given the D-Coord, is amazing in itself. Whats Bruce Carter doing these days? I think this year will be quite eye opening, one way or the other. I hope we do well, then we will get to see all these media studs reverse direction and jump on the bandwagon.

Kwon is the least of the front sevens problems the biggest issue with front seven is the 3 Fragile DTs led by the overrated and always hurt GMC… GMC, McDonald and Akeem Spence all coming off injuries. Same with jac smith at de. In addition to their physical issues front 7 is the mentally weakiest unit on team and that statement is based on LVD own words

I agree with Pablo he passes the eye test for me as well.

The world is infested with idiots. Kwon was outstanding as a rookie could possibly be in a questionable scheme. With better coaching and modern game plans, he will be great. He is an amazing young man. My thanks to anyone who had anything to do with drafting him.

hmmmm, they must take points off for biting hard on play-actions and leaving passing lanes wide open!!!
Sometimes I think we see a rookie make splash plays and we mistake potential for production!!! Do not get me wrong, He made some special elite plays last year, but like any rookie, they were some basic plays and coverages that were missed. And if you grade honestly, the grades do not reflect is someone is a rookie of a 12 year vet!!! We should all be excited because KA58 future is all ahead of him and potential turns into solid production!!!!!!!!!!
Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Realist
That is very true. Good points.
July 16th, 2016 at 11:07 am
Well said Realist. I also believe that Kwon has a bright future, although I’m still not convinced that it’s at MLB. He’s a good fit at MLB for the Tampa 2, but don’t think that Mike Smith will be running that much. Time will tell whether he stays in the middle or moves back outside like he played in college.

You do not know if PFF is wrong unless you understand statistics. You only know that you disagree with PFF’s conclusion, you lack the ability to explain why you disagree.
July 16th, 2016 at 2:37 pm
There are two elements to this PFF debate, if I may call it that. The first being the more contentious issue of grading a player. People disagree on things sometimes and we see this even between the most respected NFL insiders and GM’s. Arcia points out that nobody knows the play calls and apparently thinks that makes player evaluation impossible. If you follow that logic, then how do players get evaluated and by who? Does Licht get a pass when signing a Bengal because he didn’t know the play calls? Do you really think he calls up Marvin Lewis and asks him how much he’ll miss the Ghost before extending an offer? Of course not, that’s crazy. So Licht watches some tape and makes an evaluation ‘despite’, wait for it……Not knowing everything that could be known. Wow.
The second element is more humbling than anything else. People have terrible memory, ask any lawyer about eyewitness testimony and you’ll get some interesting stories. Ask a Bucs fan what were Kwons 5 ‘worst’ plays last year and you’re likely to get a blank stare, because we don’t remember. But, does that stop anybody from saying he’s an above average player? It doesn’t seem to, but it should, right?
I get a kick out of people who say ‘he passes the eye test’, or ‘I watch tape’. They remind me of students who listen to the teacher but don’t take notes, then wonder why they don’t do well.

I miss Joel Buchsbaum. Now there was a stat geek.

PFF the Pure Fiction Faculty
Just when u think these brainless fools couldn’t get any more dumb they suprise u again.
Kwon wasn’t perfect by any means, name a rookie that was those. but to make him out as the worst MLB in the league is mind blowing. The impact he had on this team cannot be shown in the Stat collum. Numbers are misleading and that’s why u use go by the eye test and not adding a bunch of numbers up to label a person. These guys are a joke and the whole league is taking notice of that now.
PFF = the clowns of the NFL.

Arica used to be a guest contributor with PR. Really smart cat, excellent sports writer. I’m not surprised he was annoyed by PFFs sorry excuse for reporting on this team.
July 17th, 2016 at 3:48 pm
No wonder Kwon gets miffed when he hears and reads stories like PFF’s..that’s okay, its adding gasoline to his already lit fire.
