PFF Hammers GMC

Just days after seemingly defending Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, the PFF tribe had an about-face and took the hammer to GMC this morning.
In short, the PFF tribe believes GMC has one of the worst contracts in the NFL and is taking Team Glazer to the cleaners, so types Eric Eager.
2. Gerald McCoy, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Years remaining on current deal: Six
Average remaining cap hit: $12.99 million
Year he can realistically be cut: 2018
The Buccaneers rewarded McCoy with a seven-year, $95.2 million contract extension midway through the 2014 campaign, and for good reason—he finished second, first, and second among defensive tackles in cumulative grades during his 2012–2014 campaigns. His pass-rushing productivity of 11.1 in 2013 and 9.4 in 2014 finished first and fifth, respectively, among defensive tackles. However, 2015 was a different story for the former top-three pick; he finished 65th among interior defenders in total grading (73.0), and was especially poor against the run (46.6).There’s always a risk to signing a player to the type of deal McCoy received, and there have been some reports that his work ethic left something to be desired last year (he’s denied said reports). Unfortunately, if the trend continues with McCoy, Tampa Bay has little in the way of flexibility regarding his contract until 2018; if they cut McCoy at any point before then, they are on the hook for at least $13.74 million in dead money. The new coaching staff in Tampa Bay will therefore need to work to get McCoy back to 2012–2014 levels in order to come close to receiving the top-three value his contract represents moving forward.
Couple of things jump out at Joe about this screed. First, zero mention of GMC playing hurt most of the year and missing games. No mention at all (then again, injuries cannot be found on spreadsheets, can they?). Second, this Eager character sure was eager to imply GMC is a loafer based on the outrageous allegation of Vaughn McClure of BSPN.com from an unidentified source. (Since Joe is typing this from Sin City, Joe is willing to lay cash the rumor came from an agent of a certain B1G coach in the Illinois cornfields).
As always, Joe believes GMC is a good player. He is not Warren Sapp. He may not be Aaron Donald. So what? There is no shame in that. Guess what, Lavonte David isn’t Lawrence Taylor or Derrick Brooks. Doug Martin isn’t Gayle Sayers or Warrick Dunn. Big deal.
When someone offers Joe a tried and true formula that details X-amount of dollars spent = Y-wins/losses, then Joe will pay attention to salary cap issues. This just in: No such formula exists because if there was one, every NFL team would use it.

The stats also don’t take into account almost ZERO behind or next to him in the way of run/pass support, especially pass support. I’m not sure the players he’s compared to would have the same statistics without some support.

Said it before and will say it again. Use your eyes watch the games and then tell me this guy is a difference maker. Forget money, draft position, talk, top 100 rankings forget it all. Just watch week in and week out and you will notice a startling amount of silence espically when it matters the most that’s all I care about.

First of its all i don’t hate GMC.I don’t like his play. He’s hurt all the time and rarely if ever makes a play when it matters all the nice guy crap is great and I personally respect that but he’s paid to make impact plays not host movie night.

@tmax- Your statement should read, “most un-supported Buc…” Other than Michael Bennett, who has GMC ever played with that’s worth mentioning? When the guy is healthy (I know, don’t say it) he’s a force to be reckoned with.

If he was Aaron Donald, this post would not have to be written.
There is a book called Grit. Very good book, but it illustrates what I think GMC lacks. The big aha in the book has to do with the relationship between talent, effort, skill and achievement. The authors premise is that effort counts twice. To be elite, one must possess amazing talent (GMC has loads) and amazing effort. I think GMC has good effort. Really good effort. We as fans believe he has elite talent. We just ache for his effort to match his talent. While GMC works hard, most every nfl player does, his apparent effort just doesn’t match his obvious talent. I think that GMC is a really good player. I just hope every year he becomes elite. Probably not fair.
As far as giving him more of a reason for his drop off in play due to injury, I believed that for the entire season, up until the end. Somehow, he felt healthy enough to participate in the pro bowl.
Some will say I’m just hating, some will say defending.

Joe, I never know whether you’re really defending GMC or using trolls like PFF to get ‘stuff started’. Personally don’t care if Gerald is Aaron Donald or anyone else. Just want him to be the absolute best that he can be on the field as a member of the Bucs. The amount of money he gets paid doesn’t interest me in the slightest … that was between him and the Bucs owners & management.
GMC has been in the league 6 years, but was hurt a good chunk of the first 2 years. Look at the last 4 years:
o Started 60 games … 15 games per year average.
o Has 31.5 sacks … 8 sacks per year average.
o Has 149 tackles & assists … over 37 per year average.
o All-Pro all 4 years and team captain all 4 years.
Compare him with Ndamukong Suh and you’ll find that GMC’s performance stacks up very well (GMC has more sacks in those 4 yrs actually). Aaron Donald’s only played for 2 years, plays on a better defense and is used somewhat differently in that defense … unfair comparison.
More reason I don’t pay attention to what PFF says.

GMC is part of the solution not part of the problem. Why don’t we pick on a guy like Verner? Dude drops three gimme picks last year and was left out to dry on coverage…….The guy was asked to do a job and let us down…….How about Jack Smith who was sucking wind after two plays……..How about Danny Lannsahan running into his own players………How about Chris Conte who lines up over center when his responsibility was on the sidelines, twice I one game!!!
Your harping on one of the few guys who is actually doing his job here and doing it quite well I may add………shoot even Levonta David dropped an int and seemingly forgot how to tackle in the first few games last year……..Gerald is a fine player and was surrounded see by a pile of bums last year. When other players around him step up, like Kwon did last year, this defense looks a lot more able. Want somebody to blame your barking up the wrong tree.

Oh my bad you don’t watch the games. What you’ll see is Hightower walking into the EZ through GMCs gap while he’s being blocked 1 on 1. Didn’t even try to make the tackle. Next you see Cullen chewing him a new @hole on the sidelines, McDonald has to step in and break it up. Hard worker? Absolutely works hard waxing his Rolls Royce. Charmin Charmin Charmin Charmin.

nice try GMC is barely the third best run stopper on the bucs dline. He is a good player that is hurt all the time and has screwed up priorities. you can’t give the guy credit and defend him for supposedly playing hurt all last year yet the fool shows up and plays in the meaningless dog and pony show the pro bowl.

I duno what games you guys watch but I’ve seen many plays from GMC over the years that I had to rewind because they were so ridiculous. Splitting double teams and destroying the RB or throwing an o-lineman down with 1 freaking hand. Insane explosion and timing sometimes off the snap that is just incredible.
Even Von Miller has looked like a ghost in lots of games and a beast in others and he’s about to get some insane QB money. The only defensive player who you can usually visibly see effecting almost every play is JJ Watt and his stat line is pretty weak in various games too.
The contract we gave to GMC was masterful in my opinion. We locked him up before the DT market exploded with Suh’s contract. He’s been as good as Suh and costs like 6-7 mill less per year which is absolutely insane. He’s more accomplished by far than Fletcher Cox who makes like 17 mill per year.
This is one of the dumbest things PFF has ever put out and that says a lot

Yeah DB55, McCoy missed a play. Hell miss plenty other too. I just question why you brought up that we lost by 7. GMC was not our problem that game. Our secondary was awful. How do you let three third and very longs get completed like that?

The bottom line on GMC is I will be the happiest guy in the world if the bucs win 10 games and gmc has double digit sacks including a few critical 3rd down stops or a game ender…. the better he plays the better chance the bucs have at a playoff shot but the reality is he will probably get hurt and hit IR by week 7. there are no more excuses. he is no longer the face of the franchise. he has been replaced as the leader of the team. More importantly, he has proven help all around him. he can’t go crying to glazers about coaches anymore either. shciano was too mean so they gave him mr softee how did that work out. good coach smith is proven you dont win multiple coach of the year because you have one good season… loveie was a joke and a media creation that had one lucky year in chicago.

Then you better worry about most of our skill players on offense. Getting injuries is part of the game. Good teams better get real lucky or they better have solid depth pieces.
Injury excuses are usually a cop out excuse for fans that don’t realize their team wasn’t as good as they thought. Each player is important on a team including the guy behind Kwon and the guy behind McCoy.

Buc1987, tmaxcon and DB55 … Lots of players who I don’t care for also, but at least give GMC credit for what he has done. I keep seeing the same comments (injuries, soft, not worth the money, etc) popping up over and over. None of you seem to ever give him credit for things like him starting almost 95% of Bucs games in last 4 years, leading the Bucs in sacks over that period … as an interior DLineman. Soft? I don’t think so. Injured a bunch? No more than any other in-the-trenches DT. Makes too much money? I’d much rather pay his salary than Suh’s, and besides, who cares? Fans who worry about perceived bad contracts should be looking at management, not the players.

Fans questioned Revis’ pay too. 16 million freed up gets you a lot of players. It’s just that we had the wrong guy doing the shopping. So I DO wonder sometimes what players the Bucs could get by unloading McCoy’s salary.
That really is just it for me, because hell we did have a “ghost” at DE who robbed the Glazers for a helluva lot more than McCoy has robbed them.
It’s not my money, but I’d like to watch them spend it.

Do I blame McCoy for the losses? No I don’t. I blame Raheem (not really his fault), I blame Schiano and I blame Lovie.
I never put too much fault on GM’s. As most of them are doing the shopping at the recommendation of their coaches these days. At least that’s what I believe anyways.

Buc1987 … Didn’t mean to imply that you were a GMC ‘hater’ and I have no doubt that you’re not. It’s just that it’s so easy for us fans to focus on a player’s ‘negatives’ and disregard the good things he brings to the table. To me, all great defenses have at least one ‘anchor’ on their DLine. Sapp was that anchor during his day, but he certainly didn’t do it alone; Bucs had lots of other solid talent surrounding him back in our SB heyday. Did #99 lift them up (so to speak) and get them to play better? I think he did, and I believe that’s something GMC needs to focus on more (DLineman, like OLinemen, are a breed unto their own from what I’ve seen, and need someone within their own ‘clan’ to keep pushing them).

3/4 of the guys in the NFL are playing hurt on a weekly basis. That’s a BS crutch to lean on constantly for this guy.
Decent player, not a difference maker. Aaron Donald took over our game against the Rams, GMC has never had a game that even closely resembled that.
I’ve said it before, this team will start consistently winning as soon as he’s gone.
Maybe a move out to 5-tech when we go into subpackages will help, who knows.

So the previous 2 years he was among the best DTs in the entire league. He has one injury plagued year and now it is the worst contract in the league?
Give me a break. We all know GMC was hurt last year, it was obvious to anyone watching. His play was impacted by the injury. He could have and maybe should have took more games off or even went on IR to rest up, but he battled through it.
When GMC has multiple bad years, I will get skeptical, but 1 down year is not going to change my opinion of him.
If we are going to use run defense against GMC. Let’s look at the stats. The Bucs ranked second in the entire league for yards per attempt. Apparently that terrible run defense effort that GMC had didn’t hurt his team too much. Possibly if GMC wasn’t such a freaking loaf then we could have had the best run defense. DAMN YOU GERALD!

I think that GMC will do good with some humbling. He had a bad year and the media is chewing him up for it. He will be back strong IMO. He has an ego and his manhood is being questioned. He will respond. I also think he will help lead the defense the right way. He has seen how it is supposed to be done, and now he can just reiterate and reinforce what Jameis is doing. If you guys haven’t noticed, top end DTs are getting paid huge contracts. Whether you are a fan or not, GMC is one of the better DTs in this league. Sure he is soft, and not as good Donald, or sapp, or whoever you want to compare him to. But it doesn’t change the fact he has performed at an Elite level as a DT for multiple years.
