Well, Joe has learned one thing through the past two weeks: Bucs fans should expect rookie defensive end Noah Spence at outside linebacker in a 34 front once in a while.
Joe has two Bucs defenders on record saying Spence has been practicing as an outside linebacker in a 34 front, and Joe has seen Spence standing up in underwear football.
There is a lot going on with Spence, and the soft-spoken rookie took time to chat with Jenna Laine of BSPN to discuss his early days as a Bucs defender.

I noticed in practice Spence lining up as a standup DE in a 4-3 and 4-2 also. Just cause he’s standing up doesn’t automatically make him a linebacker

How in the hell did we snag Jay Hayes?……..Bucs have rarely been successful at taking other teams good coaches…..
Licht must have promised him the DC position if Smith leaves….

Joe,
you might want to draw some stick figure diagrams of other defensive formations to aid Realist’s tampa2 mafia in understanding different looks defensively. It would really assist those stuck in the past and the ones who are convinced a 4-3 is the only defense played in Tampa.

He’s done that too but when (a couple of times) he’s standing up roughly three or four yards away from the line of scrimmage in a very wide split, think it is fair to say he’s at outside linebacker.
Besides, two defenders (including Spence) have said he has played linebacker at times in a 30 front.

just put him in position to win…scouts said he was the best pure pass rusher, so just let him rush the passer….seems like the same strategy used for khail mack…as a rookie he would drop into coverage or be a stand up lb but once they figured out he was a lot more productive as just a rusher off the edge they turned him loose and he produced….hopefully Spence can have the same type of production and disruption as mack….GO BUCS!!!

@TBBF – I have a feeling that the staff sees the writing on the wall with our DC as well. Hayes knows that he can get a bigger check down here and when Smith is lured away by a HC position somewhere else then it’s an easy slide to the DC position here in Tampa.

Is it REALLY a 3-4 look if there is virtually no chance that Spence will drop into coverage? Not really. I am very happy to hear that they have him rushing from different positions like that though.

spence doesn’t seem comfortable at all doing interviews. i hope the team does him the courtesy of just letting him focus on having a great rookie season and sticking a microphone in his face as little as possible in year 1.

I think it is HUGE that he slipped to the 2nd round. I believe he’s first round talent but he does seem like a young man feeling his way into big time football. He squandered his opportunity to that at OSU so now he’s being thrown into it. Slightly less pressure, especially since he was sandwiched between Hargreaves and the most controversial pick in the draft for the Bucs. I’m not saying he’s forgotten by any stretch, just not as much focus. Probably doesn’t hurt.

Spence is not a rah rah kind of guy, he is a soft spoken, quit type of gy who let’s his play do the talking. That doesn’t mean he’s nervous or overwhelmed by the spotlight, that’s just the kind of guy he is.
I love the idea of throwing the 3-4 at a offense once in a while. Howard Jones on one side and Spence on the other?? O ya. I like that idea. Ho Jo in particular is perfect for that role with his speed and athleticism. He’s built for a 3-4 LB more than a 4-3 DE.

#toldja – the defense is in transition. We have and WILL run MORE 3-4 concepts as we add players that fit that defensive front..
One day you will awaken and it will be 1979…but fear not, before Dungy, there was Bass (and the number 1 ranked defense in the NFL).
We were 3-4 before most of you were born.
