Involuntary early day off from practice.
Folks, when a talented second round draft pick is not considered a first-string player after two years in the NFL, it is either because he is playing behind an All-Pro or there is something else brewing.
Well, that brewing came to a head today for third-string tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Better known for his Capt. Morgan preening and fastballing a football out of the end zone when tackled short of the goal line than any play he made on the field, ASJ was run off the OTA practice field today at One Buc Palace per the fingertips of long-time Bucs beat writer Woody Cummings.

This is just unbelievable to Joe. Look, someone really, really, really has to have their head up their rear end to get run off of an OTA practice field and told to hit the showers. Joe can’t remember this ever happening in an OTA practice much less a real practice. Unreal!
Joe almost wonders if ASJ is now in danger of being sent home permanently by the Bucs. The only legitimate NFLer Joe can recall getting cut in OTAs is leaky, sleepy Josh Freeman by the Giants in 2014.
It seems ASJ’s head is wherever Freeman’s head is.

You would hope this would serve as a wake up call for ASJ but clearly he doesn’t seem to get what it is to be a professional. From his antics on Twitter to his complete and utter lack of production on the field he seems to be his on worst enemy. I’d hate to lose someone with as much potential as he appears to have but if he isnt making the team better and isn’t putting in the work, how can you justify keeping him?

Joe we would all like to know what these pre draft sources were…. Or at least what the concerns were… I don’t remember any of that pre-draft.
This is really disappointing though. We had lot’s of talk about his injuries and mental attitude (he’s only 23, right?) last week…
I can forgive the injuries, after all it’s not like he’s trying to stay injured, and Lovie didn’t help him out with the fanbase by saying he was almost ready every single week.
But you’re in the NFL now son, we’ll give you a season or 2 to grow up. But now it’s time to act like a man. If Koetter kicked him off the field, than this kid has attitude problems far worse than many of us thought. It’s too bad, he could be a monster on the field….

He’s now on his third year of making numbskull mistakes. Not sure that is going to change. Question is, how much more patience do the Bucs have? Guessing — just a guess — he gets this season to get his head screwed on straight but after today, who knows? He may not make it to his third season with the Bucs.

Maybe a sit-down Come to Jeebuz meeting with Winston and some others are in order. The guy has way too much talent & physical skilz to pi$$ away…for his own sake if nothing else.

This guy is a bigger bust than Dolly Parton’s chest. Run the bum out of town!!! Vitale, Brate and even Stocker are all better than ASJ anyways. He is to the TE position what Freeman was to the QB position except Freeman did not live in the trainers room and at least wore a helmet on game days instead of a floppy hat and flip flops.

I’d love to see ASJ get his head together, but honestly I think shipping him out for a bag of football’s might send the message to the team that coach won’t stand for this kind of player. Of we do cut bait I think Stocker, Brate, and Vitale are a good group of team first guys.

ASJ did not know what he is doing because he was probably arguing with fans on social media when he should have been studying his playbook. The guy really upsets me because he has the physical tools to be a great TE but you can’t compensate for a lack of common sense, durability and heart. That pretty much summarizes ASJ.

You sound like Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket. Hopefully you are aware that this kind of treatment may work well on young soldiers in boot camp that need discipline, but it’s the exact opposite way you treat hard-working NFL players.
If you need to say that kind of stuff to an NFL player, he really doesn’t belong on your team, or anyone else’s.

As I’ve said before, ASJ will be on a short lease this season. Its produce or go fishing. Same with Bell. If a player cannot stay healthy in the NFl his durability/suitability are all in question. The best ability in this league is..Availability..and production.

That draft guru Licht’s 2014 class is looking less and less impressive. Better hope Mike Clayton Evans sprouts some hands with a grip. Maybe now some of you will slow down and gain some healthy skepticism of our GM. This guy is hardly proven. Your chances of drafting well go up when the stars of incompetence line up to give you the first overall pick at a time when shamefully Trash McCown is your current starter and Winston is available.

Seriously, we traded Tim Wright twice. Other teams will take a flyer on an obviously talented physically guy. I’d imagine a conditional 6th rd pick could easily be had, but if the guy is a football cancer I’d bee happy to trade him for a Nacho vender.

Get it together ASJ. Hopefully this incident is just a blip on the radar and the guy will take it to heart and get “serious” about football. Bad sign to start year 3 though considering that he’s only been available for less than half the games played over his 2 years in the league. He’s had plenty of “extra” time to study his playbook considering it was handed to him about 16 months ago.

Now that 13 has a proven WR coach and not an unqualified personal assistant I am hopeful that coupled with the incompetent and ignorant lovie smith gone 13 will improve.

I have hopes that ASJ will turn things around, and maybe Koetter doing this to him will open his eyes. ASJ is on his last opportunity with this team. I would think he’d be doing his very best.
Makes me wonder if something else is going on with him that we don’t know about.
On the other hand…Koetter is REALLY impressing me. Him doing this at this point in the off season sets an example. He wants the best from his players. He wants them prepared.

I’m willing to give Licht a pass on that draft class for one reason, when he was hired he used Dominick’s staff because there wasn’t time to hire and then scout before the draft. Perhaps he was working of the same Intel the “rock star” used. Could explain the failures of many picks from the previous years as well.

Bold move by Koetter and it’s about time. Jenkins had no business on the field on that final game last year, yet he was out there and showed why he didn’t deserve to be. I keep hearing the word accountability in this thread and there has been none on this team for a while now.
Koetter still has much to prove but demanding accountability is a great place to start especially with ASJ.
Yet some of y’all need to calm down about wanting to cut or trade ASJ. If he can’t man up and act like a pro then yes. Cutting him now would send a bad message and vibe to the rest of team.
A HC should set a tone that players are expected to learn the system and give full effort. And they should also set a tone that they will support each player. Cutting a player after one mistake(under his watch) would just make Dirk look like a b**ch to the rest of the team.
Hopefully Koetter is sitting at his desk later waiting with some great advice for Jenkins and hoping that ASJ takes it upon himself to seek out his coach.

I’ve stuck up for Lovie Smith a few times because there are a lot of inaccurate critisims flying around about him.
This is a situation here, however, that highlights a major reason why he deserved to get spit canned. He let ASJ bring nonsense onto the field on Sunday’s. Lovie never benched him which was well overdo. ASJ is a perfect sample of Lovies lack of accountability but the torrent amount of mistakes show that the lack of accountability stemmed much further then just Jenkins.
I’ve got a wait see attitude about Dirk. This is one of the first real things us fans can look at to judge Dirks style and demeanor and I freaking love it……..I’m so sick and tired of seeing garbage, lack of fundamental, football only to see it go unaccounted for and only repeat itself. I trust that if any one player is sending us to the medicine cabinet for the pepto on Sunday’s……that the problem will be corrected or the player benched and we won’t have to suffer through the broken record like has been for years now.

Trading him over one mistake is going to upset some of the players on the team. It would send a message that Dirk doesn’t know how to handle problems. Any player or any employee in this would wants to feel like their boss has their back. Dirk needs to support ASJ and all his players here……..not just get to scalping them after a single error.

@buccaneers…I think lovie holding asj out of the line up for weeks after he was medically cleared falls under the bench category…the only thing lovie would say is that he’s not ready or he’s getting there….he wasn’t ready mentally…that’s why he was held out for so long…and when he returned, he show he potential but still acted like a child…as he is now…
lovie is not the type to throw a player, especially a young player under the bus….for all we know lovie could’ve chewed him out behind closed doors….GO BUCS!!!!

Bucboi-Go back and watch the last five games from last year…..Wheter or not ASJ started is invalid. In each of those games Jenkins gave great reason to not be given a snap in the next. Yet, he was on the field in the Chicago game,for example, only to dance like a fool for a meaningless losing touchdown with 11 seconds left……….in front of an embarrassed dejected home crowd none the less.
This continued game after game with no relent and, seemingly, no care from the HC. He had no business on the field for any of those games unless his antics were a thing of the past. The antics continued and personally I didn’t care to root for him. The HC is responsible to present a product to himself, the owners and the fans that we can……at the very least……not be disgusted by.

That’s because Dirks discipline of ASJ shows a major difference between himself and our former HC. It kinda brings some light to some of the differences we can expect to see on this team from what they have been in the past year.

lovie tried banks, verner, moore, Jennings, Jenkins and jude….there was no one else to play that would’ve gotten better production….that why we signed 2 FA’s cb’s, drafted the best pure cover cb and signed a bunch of UDFA’s….obviously licht saw it was the talent level that needed to to addressed….who was playing so good that you would’ve left in?….our best cb last year was sterling moore…beside him everyone else was trash and it wasn’t because of the system….GO BUCS!!!!

Bucboi-ASJ disgraced himself and the team week after week to finish out last year. Lovie made the decision to keep letting Jenkins trot onto the field and embarrass himself and fans…….IMO it was a mistake and Lovie should have kept him off the field as discipline. I don’t care about the weeks he was inactive. The lack of disciple towards Jenkins antics on the field is a completely different scenario then when he was an inactive after his injury. Lovie did not hold him accountable for his foolishness on the field, it’s basically a fact.
There’s plenty of coaches in the NFL that would not have allowed ASJ to continue with the arctics he displayed week in and week out at the end of last season.

benching is when a player is completely healthy and the coach decides not to allow the player to touch the field whether its for improper behavior or the game plan….just because lovie didn’t walk up to asj while he was sitting on the bench and tell him to hit the shower on national tv during a game doesn’t mean he didn’t get benched….the man didn’t see the field and everyone wanted to know why….
it funny because people like @realist had their panties in a bunch and calling lovie incompetent for not playing him after he was healthy….now we see why…lovie isn’t as incompetent as some make him out to be…GO BUCS!!!

I’m not sure which part bothers me the most. The fact that ASJ hasn’t locked down the #1 TE position easily or the fact that the media got a hold of the fact that ASJ was run off for “not knowing what he was doing”. Koetter clearly sees a problem between ASJ’s ears. Quite frankly, I’m not surprised. We are that much closer to being able to officially label ASJ a bust. I question a few things with ASJ including his passion for football. He doesn’t seem to be committed. I won’t blame injuries on the guy. Sure, if he isn’t committed to conditioning, that could assist in leading to injury but it’s a stretch to blame injuries on ASJ. That’s the only free pass he gets. It’s also extremely interesting that Koetter would be so blunt as to say he’s getting run off the field for being in la la land. Koetter might be saying not to read too much into this but I am choosing to read too much into this. Rarely will a guy that is supposed to be a starter get run off the field in OTA’s; much less a coach just flat out saying the reason is the guy is clueless. Koetter could have chosen to play it politically correct by giving a vague reason but he chose to be concise and to the point.

Lot of bad info going around here.
1. Lovie should have placed ASJ on IR. Dude was not completely healthy for 4 weeks while not getting played. After the season reports came out that his shoulder was much worse than Lovie ever alluded to. It was a joke that he was week-to-week with the injury he had. And we all bashed him for being soft. There is no evidence Lovie benched ASJ for attitude. If anything he hurt his reputation with how he handled his injury because everyone thought he’d be back any week.
2. Someone said something like the 2014 draft was the worst ever? Lmfao.
Mike Evans, despite some drops in a few games, had a great year still. He’s the most talented WR the Bucs have ever had in my opinion. Could definitely be one of the top 5-10 guys in the league for a long ass time.

Charles Sims was one of the best #2 RBs in the league last year and a huge pass catching weapon. Not bad for a 3rd rounder at all. That’s a hit.
Kevin Pamphile, 5th round, is a successful rotational Offensive lineman that could start at a variety of positions and likely a cornerstone of our O-line for years to come.
They say 3 starters from a draft is a very solid draft. If ASJ turns it around we basically got 4. Even if he ends up a bust ME/Charles Sims/Pamphile make that draft average at worst.
Look around the league. Most teams don’t get 3-4 starters out of every draft. Your standards are not realistic.

The one thing I don’t understand is how, after a season in this offense, he doesn’t know what he’s doing. This sounds like more than just not knowing all of the plays. Maybe I’m missing something.

I definitely agree with you so I don’t want my retort to be taken the wrong way but…. several team don’t need to get 3-4 starters and instead are providing depth. Some of the depth on several teams in several different years was better than our starters. In all honestly, as you said, we can’t truly judge the 2014 class yet. ME looks absolutely legit and seems to have that desire that seems to elude ASJ in my opinion. I think Pamphile was a great pick and I also agree with you on Sims. The question mark is ASJ. Let’s hope that he proves me wrong and he gets fired up by Koetter sending him home today etc. My brain keeps telling me he’s a lazy bust.

Sims is not a starter neither is pamphlet or asj for that matter. I’m a licht fan but that was a 1 starter draft. It’s a reach to list those backups as starters. Valuable role players yes starters no. Sims was picked to high for the teams situation at the time period.

I defended Schiano his entire second season. When he got fired I dropped it cold. Not this guy BigHog though. Lovie means more to him than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So there HAS to be some other reason why. Is he family? Probbalu not.
So I have to be the one to come out and say it….seeing how he pulls his race card out every now and then for no good reason.

Hell even 3 significant role players that sign 2nd deals is a decent draft. Pamphile is likely a starter tho eventually. Sims plays enough snaps to basically be the equivalent of a WR3 / slot WR which ppl consider a starter.

We’re not even in TRaining Camp yet. Football hungry fans have a story here to really go off on. At the end of the day we are making a mountain out of a molehill. Jenkins will have plenty of chances to let his game define him, not this type of garbage. And I trust our Coaching staff wil give him the chances to rise above this, along with any needed guidance.
Yet though, ASJ has been nothing short of a complete disappointment here in Tampa. I would love nothing more to see the next ASJ story to be the coaches or players praising him for working so hard, or making great plays on the field…..or a story about Joe telling us how determined and furious he appears.
The fact is that ASJ has a huge body and it’s beautiful to see him dominate the seam and carry the Bucs down the field. This offense has great potential with him. The potential is so much greater with ASJ(at full potential) then without him. It is just so disappointing to not have him on board with the Same mindset as, say, Winston.
I’ve seen all I can stomachs of the “bad side” of Jenkins. It’s high time to see the good side!!! It has to be right NOW though!!! Make or break year for Jenkins!!!

Sorry man, my drawers have been in a wad for 3 weeks now. 2-3 hours of sleep a night for the past 3 weeks starts to wear on you. Got some Ambien coming my way tonight. Crossing my fingers.

87, LOL! The Lovie thing just isn’t going to die for a while. The way I look at it, the free-agents we brought in (not all) were a lot of Bears and Cowboys. That sounds like Lovie. We drafted all Offensive players. That sounds like Licht. That’s where I’m at right now.

@lord….what serious injury did he have?….it didn’t require surgery….it wasn’t a torn cuff like gmc…..he had a bruised should that healed…that’s why he didn’t go on ir….he wasn’t seriously injured….lovie kept him out for a reason….his attitude….lovie benched him for weeks because he still displayed a me first attitude…..GO BUCS!!!!

you are so far off the mark!!! He was injured and could not lift his injured arm over his head!!! Kinda makes it hard to catch wouldn’t you say!!!! But he elected not to have the surgery that basically wraps torn muscles together!!! In those weeks he could run routes in practice to stay in shape. That is how he “practice” but was scratched during games, in hopes that other teams would prepare for him!!!!
Much like when Joey Galloway had a broken bone in his foot and could only run in a straight line, but the story was that Coach Gruden did not know how to get Galloway and Bryant on the field at the same time!!!!!!
