Gerald McCoy No. 25
June 4th, 2016Yes, it is that time of year again. Joe doesn’t need to look at a calendar. Just judging by all the Top 100 lists out there, Joe knows it is summer (unofficially).
And, yes, Gerald McCoy has already made the 2016 list of the NFL Network’s Top 100 players, voted on by NFL players. He ranked No. 63 this year. However, GMC made another list that may be more illustrious: the Top 100 of prickly Pete Prisco of CBS Sports.
In Prisco’s eyes, GMC is No. 25.
McCoy’s play slipped off some last season from 2014, but he is still one of the better inside players. He had 8.5 sacks last season, but his run play wasn’t as good as in years past. Then again, he didn’t have as much help around him.
Well, a reason GMC’s play may have slipped is he played hurt most of the season. In fact, so too did most of his fellow defensive linemen. The Bucs’ front line was dinged up all up and down the line.
If the Bucs can get some edge rush this year — Joe is guessing they will — then don’t be surprised to see GMC raise his game.

Defense Rules —
No offense, but Yes, you’re missing something. While the sack total increased, much was not because of DEs and there was no consistency in pressure at all.
Smith and spence and ayers on the outside with McCoy and spence and McDonald on the inside…. Plus the fact that Mike smith likes to send Kwon or Lavonte with their speed…. I see them pushing 50. I know it sounds crazy but the league is pass happy. That’s a lot of drop backs. Plus they have an offense to keep them in games or even- gasp- get leads. Then they have DBs that should be able to take away quick slants to make it so the QB can’t get rid of the ball in 2 seconds. Lots of variables and they are right, health is absolute key, but I see this-
Gerald McCoy 10
Akeem Spence 3
Clinton McDonald 1
Robert Ayers 8
Jacques Smith 8
Noah Spence 7
Labonte David 5
Kwon Alexander 5
Howard Jones 3
That’s 50 right there and I think that is very realistic in the new defense that attacks more.
Honestly though, I think McCoy goes off this year and has 12+ which is fantastic for a DT.
I also think the rookie Spence sniffs 10 because he just flat out knows how to get to the QB when you watch him.
I am an optimist though, but I see this defense completely turned around. The talent is there.
June 4th, 2016 at 9:00 am
I’m a McCoy fan, but #25, really? I can think of a lot more than 24 players I’d rather have than McCoy, and that’s just on Offense.
June 4th, 2016 at 9:14 am
@ Dave
Not impossible to reach 50…….you left out Gholston & have no safety sacks….
June 4th, 2016 at 9:28 am
Only 1 team made it to the 50 sack mark last year for the season!! And that was the Denver Broncos with 52. I do not think that 50 is a “realistic” mark!!!!
June 4th, 2016 at 9:37 am
The Realist is like the Hillary Clinton of Bucs fans to the optimistic Bernie Sanders fans “Be realistic…dream smaller….be practical”. Feel the Buc Bern Realist! It’s offseason…we’re the champions of offseason optimism 20 years straight! 60 sacks I say!!
June 4th, 2016 at 9:45 am
Gerald McCoy 10 (Realistic)
Akeem Spence 3 (Unrealistic; not enough playing time)
Clinton McDonald 1 (Unrealistic; he’s coming off IR, but if he plays, he’s good for at least 3-5 sacks)
Robert Ayers 8 (Unrealistic; 6 at best)
Jacques Smith 8 (Unrealiistic; Between William Gholston, Robert Ayers and Noah Spence, Smith will have very little time to get that many sacks)
@Dave
Noah Spence 7 (Realistic)
Lavonte David 5 (Realistic; I could even see him getting 1-2 more sacks than this)
Kwon Alexander 5 (Realistic; I could even see him getting 1-2 more sacks than this)
Howard Jones 3 (Unrealistic; Barring injuries, I just don’t see Jones getting enough playing time, not with so many guys competing on the DL this year)
ADDITION:
William Gholston 2 (Realistic; he won’t be starting this year and in 16 games he was lucky to get 3 sacks last year)
June 4th, 2016 at 9:46 am
“@Dave” was supposed to be at the top…no idea how it moved down, lol.
June 4th, 2016 at 9:47 am
Fifty sacks is not happening. Not this year and not next year.
June 4th, 2016 at 9:49 am
There are 1,696 players in the NFL and the Consensus among THEM is that GMC is one of the best in the world.
Some dimwit wannabes around here thinks he sucks. When did you guys start ‘thinking’ anyways? You should prolly stop
June 4th, 2016 at 9:51 am
Dave Says:
“That’s 50 right there and I think that is very realistic in the new defense that attacks more.”
I actually agree with you on GMC.
However…you are making assumptions about the defense based on what exactly? Even IF they attack more like you say will happen, that doesn’t equate to success.
I mean…I’m really not trying to be a downer…I just think it is unrealistic to expect so much when Spence is a rookie.
Also, you left out George Johnson. I know, I know, we don’t expect him to do much, but the truth is, he did well elsewhere when he had a good line around him. If the line here improves enough, he could find success again.
As a backup.

Can’t see what I did to trip your filter Joe. Should I have spelled it “sux”??
June 4th, 2016 at 10:40 am
Some dimwit wannabes
————
Lmao, sux when the dimwits are right more often than wrong. A jump from 29 to 63 sure inspires confidence. I’m sure if your investment port or your business contracts took a 100%+ decline from last year it wouldn’t bother you at all right?
JJ Watt played with 5 major core muscle tears last yr and still won DPOY. He’s got no help on his Dline yet took his team to the playoffs.
Best DT in the league? Child please, not even best DT in the division.
June 4th, 2016 at 10:50 am
@Dave … “That’s 50 right there and I think that is very realistic in the new defense that attacks more.”
Have to agree with Realist on this one Dave. In the past 5 years, only 10 teams have hit 50 sacks, and they were essentially teams with a history of strong DLine play. I’d say that 50 is ‘feasible’ but it’d be hard to give it a ‘very realistic’ rating. Even when we had Simeon Rice and Warren Sapp (and several other decent sack-masters), we only hit 50 once (55 sacks in 2000) that I could find. And I’d think that it’s harder nowadays with QBs using 3-step drops and quick releases.
Must say though, love the optimism. I’m rooting for 50 sacks or better just like you are.
June 4th, 2016 at 11:17 am
Just to be clear, JJ Watt is a DE, why do people keep comparing him to GMC? Players and coaches around the league say GMC is great, why should we listen to posters who think they know more?
June 4th, 2016 at 12:02 pm
I luv ya DB but you epitomize “dimwittedness” if you think you know more than 1,696 Pro Football players. Just sayin
June 4th, 2016 at 12:37 pm
50 sacks from a team that I’ve been screaming at the TV for the last 10 years that the QB has all the freaking time I the world to throw is not unrealistic.
It’s insanity.
June 4th, 2016 at 12:38 pm
He’s not Sapp and that p!sses off the lunatic fringe. The folks that hate on GMC, that tells Joe they would rather have Da’Quan Bowers.
June 4th, 2016 at 1:01 pm
I compared GMC to Watt bc everyone keeps using his injured shoulder as an excuse for his performance. The point is Watt had more injuries and better performance.
Is that not valid?
He’s not the best DT in the league according to NFL players, he’s not even the best player on our defense according to NFL players. Of course us haters have been saying this all year but what do we know? You should listen so you can learn young grasshopper.
He’s a third overall pick who gets paid extremely well to perform but gets outperformed by others at his position. Should we not hold him accountable?
ME13 is 13th overall pick in his second year and he’s called K-Y hands every time his name is mentioned. That’s completely accurate and rational? Come on it’s like GMC is immune to criticism but only gmc.
June 4th, 2016 at 1:12 pm
He is always hurt, so is JJ Watt. The difference? Watt’s game raises the players around him hurt or not. I am hoping McMoy lives up to the hype. So far, I have not seen his play as being effective in making the team better.
June 4th, 2016 at 1:14 pm
So GMC isn’t J.J. Watt or Warren Sapp. Who the hell is? Does that warrant running him off the team? Please!
Doug Martin isn’t Walter Payton or Barry Sanders either. Should he be cut?
Vincent Jackson isn’t Jerry Rice. He’s a bum, huh?
Lavonte David isn’t Derrick Brooks much less Lawrence Taylor or Jack Ham. Should he be benched?
There is nothing wrong with being good. GMC isn’t great. This just in: No one on the Bucs roster is (yet).
Until or unless the Bucs find a defensive tackle better than GMC — and they are not in the market for one because they have much bigger fish to fry — this is a vapid argument.
June 4th, 2016 at 1:39 pm
Vapid argument? That weird it’s the one topic that generates the most posts and discussions I thought. Never fails to get posters arguing. Can’t say it’s boring or dull imo. Then again I’m not very bright, I don’t even know what vapid means had to look it up. Lol
There’s just so many excuses for him, he’s hurt, he’s got no help, he’s triple teamed every play, blah blah blah.
Just hold him accountable like everyone else ie K-Y hands. Btw McBuc said he was “great”.
June 4th, 2016 at 1:44 pm
McCoy is not great, and he should not be cut, but he should not be paid like he is great, or traded. Please stop talking about your Toyota as if it is a Cadillac. If McCoy produces this year, I will be all happy.
June 4th, 2016 at 2:44 pm
Not to nitpick but Prisco has McCoy at #26, Doug Martin at #96, Mike Evans at the top of just missed and Lavonte in the lower just missed also. That’s some high praise for GMC.

I havent seen anyone try to “run GMC off the team”. This is all made up nonsense. Not everybody are sheep and believe everything told to us because the masses agree. GMC is a good player when completely healthy. Not great. i dont believe he’s the 25th best player in the league. Do I want him gone? Of course not. But more consistent play without all the excuses for him would be nice.
June 4th, 2016 at 5:04 pm
DB55 Says:
“…he’s not even the best player on our defense according to NFL players…”
That’s bullspit.
Name one player on defense that is currently better than Gerald McCoy.
You can’t, because it ain’t true.
David isn’t. Kwon isn’t. Everyone else is unproven.

9.5
8.5
8.5
The last 3 years of sacks for Gerald McCoy. Don’t try to claim he hasn’t produced.
June 4th, 2016 at 5:14 pm
I agree with DB as usual.
June 4th, 2016 at 5:35 pm
Bonzai
Gmc was voted #63 and David was voted #53 on the NFL Top 100 show.
This is my main problem people mistaking their opinions for facts. Like I said according to NFL players he is not the best in the league, in the division or on the team.
I know this makes you butthurt but it’s Facts, look it up.
June 4th, 2016 at 5:52 pm
So funny to hear arm chair pinheads call GMC a Toyota.
Frickin hilarious. At the same time one does this he calls All the Pros idiots. But hey…..if you guys think you know more than the guys who get paid more in One Year than you will your Entire lives then Hey…….More power to ya. Whatevs

June 4th, 2016 at 6:16 pm
I must bein the wrong profession then cuz I was right about Aaron Donald, Lovie Smith, Jameis Winston and Mr. Do no wrong – best in the world Gmc.
Where do I apply?
June 4th, 2016 at 6:24 pm
The ‘profession’ you were supposedly ‘wrong’ in DB is one you could never enter because you, as the rest of us, were not blessed with enough athletic talent to do. The “Players” who “play” against GMC constantly rank him in the top 100 “Players” in the NFL.
You can’t ‘apply’ unless you go to next yrs Bucs’ open tryouts.
June 4th, 2016 at 6:25 pm
OH and you have to make the roster of the Bucs to vote.
June 4th, 2016 at 6:29 pm

June 5th, 2016 at 8:45 am
To get 8.5 sacks with a torn rotater cuff and below average help along the line is pretty impressive if u ask me. I would love to see GMC on the Broncos line or on the Texans line. He would show you what he can really do when the whole o line does that to focus on him and dbl team every play. I’m very excited to see what he’s capable of now that hes finally starting to get us decent players around him. Its gonna be interesting to see what the puthetic haterz say then.
” ppl that hate on GMC tell me that they would rather have Daquan Bowers instead.” -JOE
Well put joe. These ppl don’t recognize a good football player unless he’s a JJ watt or a Warren Sapp. Cause that’s what they expect from him for sum odd reason. I guess he’s gotta get 15 sacks every year while having no one along side of him to please ppl around here.
