Is Ronde Barber a trusted member of general manager Jason Licht’s personnel team?
Speaking on WDAE-AM 620 today, the Bucs’ iconic cornerback explained he was provided a list of players on Tampa Bay’s 2016 draft board and secured film on the guys.
And he served up his evaluation.
“I do the Bucs preseason [broadcasts] and was over there and got kind of a list of a bunch of guys that they were thinking about drafting,” Barber said. “Obviously, [Vernon Hargreaves] was one. They really liked him. Noah Spence is another one I spent a lot of time looking at.
“What I love about Vernon is that physical nature. He’s like me, though, when I look at him on film. He looks really small in the huddle. (laughs). That being said, what he gets out of himself is amazing. You know, he plays hard, he plays fast, he’s a technician to a degree. … He cares about his craft. That’s something I didn’t develop until like my third year in the league.
“You can see it him already. You talk to Jason [Licht] and those guys, the scouts, whatever, they talk about his physical nature. Again, I don’t know how big he is, I have not stood next to him. They tell me he’s really thick and he enjoys the physical aspect of the game. So I don’t see any reason at all why he couldn’t be that kind of presence as an inside player to start off here in Tampa. I think that’s where they want to play him.”
Wow. So there’s Barber, scooping up lists of players the Bucs are interested in drafting and watching their film, and chatting it up with scouts and assorted personnel types.
That’s very cool, and it represents an awful lot of trust in Barber, considering he has an impressive media career.
Barber was the ultimate film junkie as a player, and a student of so many aspects of the game. Joe’s glad to hear Licht is embracing him.

Never will I forget and always will be greatfull for his pick 6 of mcnabb/eagles trying to come back to beat us, that play sent us to the superbowl.. And that was the last game played in that eagles stadium.. Sweet

That means CB1 – Grimes, CB2 – Verner, CB3 – Hargreaves, with coaches probably planning on swapping Verner and VHIII at some point this year or next.
Even if our safeties have the same mediocre play as last year we’ll take that. A much improved CB stable coupled with some key additions to the pass rush and this Def could turn the corner this year.

Ok, I’ll ask then…. What the deuce is the story behind the “h” in the misspelled Rhonde’s name? Always drives me nuts to see it, but if there’s a “Mark Alstott” story behind it, I’d love to hear it

Brooks and Barber are my two all time favorite Bucs. Did Ronde have a nice second contract with the Bucs? Remember him saying at a PC every year they try to replace me. His last and only year he was asked to play as a Safety:

For the life of me I cant understand all the his size talk. Aneius Williams 5/11 200lbs,Darrelle Revis 5/11 204 lbs,VH3 5/10 205lbs. Seems to me he is ideal cb size. And for the record(since so mamy here love traveling down memory lane)I recall the Barber brothers time at Virginia. VH3 is so much further along in his game than what Ronde was at this time in his career it aint even funny.

Aeneas Williams? There’s a blast from the past. Great corner in his time, and the receivers weren’t any shorter when he was playing either. Makes me wonder, how tall was Darrell Green? I hate the Redskins but he was awesome.

Just looked it up about Darrell Green. Dude is 5’8″!! He played corner most of his career and played like a champ. No reason VH3 can’t make his mark like the other great shorter corners have

The reason I say Cleveland for Johnthan Banks – is because their looking to get younger. Words is Tramon Williams (33) might is on the move.
Trade straight up Johnthan Banks for Tramon Williams.
Covert $3.8 MM of Williams contract this year into a signing bonus.
Essentially giving him guaranteed money next year.
Would make for a competitive battle at corner.
Plus give us a great contingency plan – just in case anyone should miss some time.

Gruden got ATrain’s name wrong in his first presser as HC for the Bucs
The ‘h’ thing came as national media kept spelling it wrong then a local beat writer got it wrong and was blasted. You can always tell a fake fan if they spell his name with an h is what I have lived by.

Banks was developing faster than Ronde Barber did before he was benched. The kid will be a good CB so long as he gets good coaching and enough playing time.
How about trading away players we don’t actually need? Like Glennon and James. (That’s right, I said James).
If you think the CB we drafted is replacing Banks, don’t count on it. He’s being converted to safety.

Why in the world would we get rid of Banks? In a year or 2 our no. 1 corner will be retired and Verner will more than likely be gone as well. So where would that leave us? You take those 2 guys away and banks is our most experienced CB. And it wouldn’t hurt to keep at least one guy with size. and Before Lovie came around Banks was developing quit well. And I think he will get back on that track now that coach “my way or the highway” is gone. NO CB was gonna succeed in that scheme. Not when u give the receiver 10 yards before you even snap the ball. And u ppl wonder why we couldn’t stop a slant pass. Banks is a young and promising CB that is part of the future. Besides VH3 ofcourse, he would be the last guy u would want to get rid of.
