Eyeing An O-Line Trade
April 25th, 2016The Buccaneers have one of the deepest offensive lines in the NFL while plenty of teams are aching for help at the position.
That’s an indisputable fact, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out Jason Licht might be getting his share of phone calls late Friday or on Saturday from those in search of help.
Add to the mix that the Bucs have drafted four offensive linemen in two years under Licht — a former Nebraska offensive lineman himself — and have successfully developed three of them. There’s a real O-line incubator in place, led by George Warhop, who deserved the award for assistant coach of the year in 2015.
It wouldn’t shock Joe for a second if the Bucs traded, say, center/guard Evan Smith for a fifth-round pick. Smith isn’t part of Tampa Bay’s future, and Joe could see Licht grabbing a college center on Day 3 and letting him develop.
Smith turns 30 in July and revived his career last year while filling in when Ali Marpet was lost with an ankle injury for 3 1/2 games. He’s under contract through 2017, and there very well could be a team aching for and Band-Aid player like Smith.
Again, the Bucs have too much depth on the O-line to not entertain phone calls.

Agree completely Joe. EDS is the odd man out for all the reasons you’ve just posted.
Licht is a smart dude. For all we know he may pull off a large package deal…MG8 and EDS…who knows maybe even a draft pick if he wants to move up.
I gotta say if we somehow got Ramsey and Spence I’d be excited! Ramsey may getting close to reaching if we sweeten the pot with EDS and MG8.

Joe,
I think we would probably let Smith go for a 7th, so I like your thinking.
I like the thought of us getting extra picks especially if we have to give up a 3rd to move up to get Ramsey(he’s 100% worth it).
On a different note Panthers must have some real concern about us based on a tweet Josh Norman sent out about our “Twin Towers” today.

What did he say? I follow Josh but my timeline got filled up with all the Tom Brady stuff…

Could all this warhop should have been asst coach of the year and EDS had a rejuvenation of his career coincide with the competent OC now HC Koetter?

I do not think the Bucs could trade for a conditional 7th round compensatory pick for EDS62!!!! He will be 30 for the 2016 season and has 2 years of very bad tape!!!

I know cleveland needs O-line help bad. We should trade Evan and try and grab Nick Martin from Notre Dame.

He said he wished the Panthers well but also good luck in dealing with those twin towers down in Tampa.

Wow Wausa..thanks!! Nice to hear that from Josh!!! That should have motivated our boys to do even better!!

Completely agree with the article. I find it very funny that one year ago today everyone was talking about how the OLine was the biggest concern for the Bucs, now we have a surplus. Funny how that worked out.
Also I’m not sure that I am over EDSmith not being fully onboard with Jameis from the beginning last year.

GM Joe thinks that the Bucs could fetch a 5th round pick for a 30 year old center who was benched for a guy who was cut by the Falcons last season and has never proven to be more than mediocre-at-best in the past 3 years.
Yup, that makes total sense. What do you think we could get for Gosder Cherilus GM Joe? By that logic, the 31 year old former first round pick who started for us last year should be worth at least a 3rd round pick! LOL
April 25th, 2016 at 1:31 pm
Potential extra picks keep rolling in. A 5th for the turd in the punch bowl known as E “Don’t Call Me D” S…along with the 2nd rounder Glennon was gonna fetch ( or was it a 1st…so much data out there )…it’s a bounty of picks starting this Thursday! Gilkey may draw some serious interest too!

I remain unconvinced that we have any championship quality starters. Maybe Marpet will be one day, but that’s it. Too early to tell for Smith.
April 25th, 2016 at 1:44 pm
I say the Bucs need to do whatever they can to grab extra picks – trade down if we can still land the player we want unless somebody is falling into our laps at 9. Trade Smith for a 5th and Glennon for a 3rd/4th or part of a package to move up.
People have linked us to the Titans so a trade down with them could give us the 15th pick, and the first pick in rd 3 and 5.
The Cardinals have a need at center so lets say we could grab their 5th rd pick #167.
Then we convince the Broncos to trade their 1st rd for Glennon and our 2nd rd pick. With the 15th and 31st picks the Bucs could go DE/DT and CB. Then they could trade all over the place with the remaining picks being valued at 689.5 points.

@JonBuc LOL well done, sir. Well done.
April 25th, 2016 at 2:43 pm
he’s a replacement level player who was way overvalued by basement scout lovie smith. getting anything for him would be nice and clears the way for a developmental player in the OL group. as a veteran at a position where experience makes a difference, he ought to have value in trade despite not doing anything remarkable since leaving Aaron Rodgers’ team

What? One of the deepest lines in the league? Joe Hawley missed a combined 22 games in 2015 and 2013. You need Smith around. Hawley is injury prone. That leaves you with a backup right tackle with experience.
?? Hawley wasn’t hurt last season. And Pamphile has shown versatility. –Joe
April 25th, 2016 at 6:03 pm
He sounds like a decent backup. I’m not trading him. Guys get hurt he could give you a couple games. Also, I’m not convinced our o-line will perform as well this years. Anyways who cares about a 6-7 rd pick. Their garbage. It’s like winning the lottery if you find a player that late. Rds is better than a late pick.
April 25th, 2016 at 6:06 pm
You guys who care about 6-7 rd picks are some kinda weird. Rds is way better than that garbage. Get out of the bottle and sober up.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:11 pm
Joe Hawley started 14 games for the Bucs last year, and he did great. I really do not understand why you people think we need a center in the draft!
April 25th, 2016 at 8:13 pm
Joe Hawley is only 27. He WASN’T injured last year.
Lee, get your fact’s straight.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:14 pm
And kindly notice…the Bucs got him off the street. We can do it again IF we need to.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:16 pm
Oh…and Ali Marpet can play center too.
April 26th, 2016 at 4:56 am
The OL looked better because they had a competent QB running the show. I don’t think we suddenly have talent to lose, but should embrace the fact that we have strength at a position of significance. So F it, what’s wrong with having the deepest OL in the league?….Nothing. Lets not avoid our advantages.
April 26th, 2016 at 9:13 am
There no way we get any thing close to a 5th rndr for a guy who can’t even snap the ball right to his QB half the time. Cmon Joe. You can add him to the list of FA bust as well. I don’t get it, this guy was a decent guard before coming here.
You know all the blame shouldn’t fall on Licht when these players that he signs in FA don’t pan out. These guys were successful players before coming here and fitted the Bucs needs. He can’t go out and play for them too. That falls on the player not the GM.
