Bucs Hoping For Ramsey Freefall?
April 25th, 2016In three days, the NFL draft will (finally) be here! NFL Christmas in April! Joe just wonders what Santa will bring.
The Bucs could go all sorts of ways. They could smartly go defensive end. They could go cornerback, which very well could be a need next year. Or, with defensive ends deep in the draft, the Bucs, if they could find a dance partner, could trade down and stock pile an extra pick or two.
What about trading up? Well, Joe doesn’t think that will happen unless one player slips to No. 5, where Jacksonville rests. And that player would be cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
Appearing over the weekend on the “Pat and Aaron Show,” featuring co-hosts Pat Donovan and Aaron Jacobson on WDAE-AM 620, Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com discussed Ramsey and the Bucs.
In short, if Ramsey fell to the Jags, Campbell believes the Bucs have an opening.
“I think if [Ramsey] gets to No. 5 with the Jaguars I think that only moving up four spots that may only cost you a second day pick. Talking to some people at the Jags, aren’t that high on Jalen Ramsey. So I think they would be open to that kind of deal.”
Joe doesn’t know if the Jags are blowing smoke at Campbell, but it just seems the Jags would be all over Ramsey the way they are desperately trying to build up their defense.
Regular readers of Joe know that for the longest time, Joe has stated if Ramsey somehow fell to No. 5, then things could get very interesting around One Buc Palace. The more Joe thinks about this, it isn’t the Jags the Bucs will have to talk turkey with if they want a slipping Ramsey, it would be the Cowboys at No. 4.

I think the cowboys are gona pass on him too. N jax might not wana trade with the bucs after the last time, when they stuck themselves with blackmon. Even tho the bucs passed on keuchly and took barron, sticking themselves too in the process. A few more days and we will find out. Go bucs
April 25th, 2016 at 6:16 am
Don’t get greedy guys. If he falls to 7 or 8 we can be thinking trade up. But right now, we need that third round pick. I love Ramsey (he’s a Nole..done and done he is the greatest. ref: Jameis) but I’m not giving up a safety or wr or NT or RT in the third for the guy. No sir-y Bob.
April 25th, 2016 at 6:19 am
Our GM is well respected. Im sure if he wamted a trade he could gwt one for cheap.
April 25th, 2016 at 6:24 am
I would trade up for him. We would finally have a CB/Safety that could go against Julio Jones and Kelvin Benjamin. Get him!
April 25th, 2016 at 6:38 am
Trade with Cowboys and throw in mike glennon and pick. Let’s face it the Cowboys want Romo to play cause he can ball. But when has Romo finished a season playing all 16 games. Cowboys backups have cost them big time over last few years so this could make sense
April 25th, 2016 at 6:45 am
Glennon and a third rounder to the cowgirls for their fourth pick. Only works if Glennon can agree to terms on a deal before the move.
But do you then still take Ramsey with every single de still on the board???
April 25th, 2016 at 6:46 am
The only way the Bucs can get Ramsey is a trade with the Chargers. Dallas will not take chance with both Elliott and Bosa being picked before the ninth spot.
April 25th, 2016 at 7:29 am
I don’t think the Jags or Cowboys will accept anything less than a second rndr to move up.
Now another scenario would be what do the bugs do if both Ramsey AND Boss are still on the board at 5? Do you trade up for one or do u roll the dice and hope one of them fall to u?
April 25th, 2016 at 7:41 am
I don think Ramsey or Jack fall like some have been saying. I know Jerry has done some crazy stuff but Ramsey, Jack, and Tunsil seem to be the guys with zero question marks so teams would have to be crazy to pass over them
April 25th, 2016 at 7:49 am
Not so sure about the whole Elliot or bosa to Dallas thing. Keep in mind Jerry still has final say but is now being strongly influenced by his son. With Gregory and Lawrence facing suspensions for extra curricular activities do they really wanna touch another football player the following draft known for doing lines??? Not so sure about that.
April 25th, 2016 at 7:56 am
I’m watching NFL network Eric Davis just said get a rusher before you take a corner, and stated this is coming from a corner back. Needless to say I’m in agreement. And a fan of Ramsey’s.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:04 am
I agree with Pete Mitchell.
The only way a trade up with the Cowboys to get Ramsey will occur is if Glennon is part of the deal and a contract extension is part of the equation.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:06 am
For everyone all distraught over Mack Alexander having 0 pick offs in 2 seasons, Jalen Ramsey has 3 in 4 seasons, I think the hype train is a bit outta control over his athleticism more than his tape
April 25th, 2016 at 8:27 am
Jvato – Hype on Ramsey and his tape is somehow a liability vis a vis his athleticism? What tape have you been watching? I’m a Nole, so I know I am biased but Ramsey’s athleticism AND tape are not being overhyped. He is being hyped at the perfect level the kid was a man among boys pretty much his whole college career. The hype is REAL.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:30 am
Jvato https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZyGaZMVqxs check out 1:38 in.. We need THAT.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:43 am
“They could smartly go defensive end. They could go cornerback, which very well could be a need next year.”
Key point.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:43 am
THREE INTERCEPTIONS IN THREE YEARS AND ONLY 22 PASSES DEFENDED !!!!!
NO THANK YOU.
If we go DB, which I hope we don’t, then VH3 has Eons better numbers put up.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:47 am
Chan…………Why the paltry numbers then? I mean looking at his stats you wouldn’t think he even belongs in the discussion.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:53 am
ok i’ll admit I do not know everything about football but I’ve watched and attend A LOT of game(Noles and Bucs)and Ramsey is a BEAST, don’t believe just stats, watch the tape, do the research. if this guy falls anywhere near our pick we should get him, IMHO and that take is bolstered by analysts, other coaches and players(Jameis being one of them). I find it remarkable that people are questioning this kid’s worth but hey, I just admitted I don’t know everything about football and my eyes have been lying again..
April 25th, 2016 at 8:55 am
I see no point in trading up. While there are only something like 19 players this year with a second round grade, none of them are really slam dunks like we see in other years.
I’m for staying pat…or even trading down a couple spots to gain a pick.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:57 am
“SB with Jameis Says:
April 25th, 2016 at 8:47 am
Chan…………Why the paltry numbers then? ”
He only has one full season as a CB, this last one, where QBs were already throwing away from him. He also played Safety, and Star (plus kick returner). I challenge anyone who has actually watched him play his entire career to say he’s overrated. People rely too much on stats when they haven’t see them with their own eyes.
Additionally, he loves football and loves winning and leading his teammates. He’s like a defensive Jameis. Traits lost too often when people simply pull up a stat sheet.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:57 am
Sorry, 19 players with a FIRST round grade.
April 25th, 2016 at 8:57 am
this or bosa would be a dream come true. still cant believe how many sites pick us with a tackle at 9. idk if they watched our defense last year. offense was as solid as the year we went 10-6 however many years ago that was
April 25th, 2016 at 8:58 am
only tackle id take is if laremi fell, but even if he did id do my best to trade out of that
April 25th, 2016 at 9:03 am
Amen Joe, my take for awhile now. Dallas is the only Ramsey option. The jags will not move from 5 without huge compensation. They want to have either jack or Ramsey on their roster at the end of the draft. Leaving 5 for 9 won’t do that. Dallas realizes if they don’t take Bosa at 4 he likely falls to 9 at the bucs. If he doesn’t there are other options that have been well documented. Most likely they could swap picks, still get Bosa, pick up Glennon and swap their 4th for our 3rd.
April 25th, 2016 at 9:09 am
Luv…….even though I am a Gator, my Wife, Brother and best friend are Noles. I have missed very few Noles games in the last decade. I have seen him play and admit he is Great. However I don’t think ANY DB is worth moving UP for in the top ten. Sorry and don’t claim Gator love either cause I want DL in the first.
If a casual observer were to compare tape VH3’s tape and numbers are much better.
April 25th, 2016 at 9:09 am
to finish my thought. They could draft a developmental QB in the second or third or later, put the hat on him and have him be the third option. If Romo goes down, Glennon is their backup plan. They let Glennon lose for what will end up as a 4th round compensatory pick (I know these aren’t guaranteed, just playing percentages)
Granted this is a Dallas dream scenario, but it is for us as well. We would walk out of the draft with Ramsey, not losing our 2nd round pick, losing a third but still having two 4s.
April 25th, 2016 at 9:13 am
let glennon loose not lose (might be a Freudian slip tho)
April 25th, 2016 at 9:16 am
Glennon and a 3rd rounder for the 4th overall pick lololololol hahhahhahhaha. Do you have any idea what the 4th overall puck in the draft is worth? Toss in our 1st and maybe they consider it.
April 25th, 2016 at 9:18 am
@SB
I’m not advocating moving up. I just don’t think he’s overhyped. And, in a conference with quite a few 6’4″+ receivers and tight ends, I will take the guy with better height, speed, measurables, and versatility.
I don’t expect Ramsey to be there. I will be happy with pretty much any position besides QB, TE, or RB, other than grasping for a 3rd or 4th rated DE, when better talent is available at other positions.
April 25th, 2016 at 9:28 am
remember, even daryl revis got exposed here in Tampa, because we have no pass rush.
April 25th, 2016 at 9:34 am
Fair enough Love.
April 25th, 2016 at 10:20 am
Because I live in Florida I saw a few FSU games. Because my son lives in Columbus and is a yyyuuuge OSU fan I watched several of their contests as well.
Whenever I watched the Noles I SAW Ramsey! Whenever I watched the Buckeyes I had to look pretty hard to see Bosa!
But my eyes are not professional and I trust Licht and his staff…they found Marpet and Kwon.
But from my admittedly amateur eyes I like Ramsey waaaay more than Bosa.
April 25th, 2016 at 10:23 am
It’s a simple formula:
22 Starters +No. 9 pick = the No. 1 at something
Do that Licht, and I’m a happy Bucs fan.
April 25th, 2016 at 10:23 am
Rankins at no. 9. Robinson can cover big receivers. Jalen has size too but not enough pass break ups or interceptions to move up for. Don’t let the FSU Lovers try to persuade you otherwise. Rankins is needed as McCoy’s ultimate replacement.
April 25th, 2016 at 10:30 am

Cowboys took Mo’ Claiborne (who hasn’t panned out)
April 25th, 2016 at 10:31 am
Imo it would have to be the Cowboys at #4. I’m sure the Jags would love nothing more than to team up Telvin Smith and Jalen Ramsey again. They’re building a good young nucleus in Jax, no way Ramsey gets past them.
April 25th, 2016 at 10:35 am
I’d only trade-up for Ramsey (he’s the best defensive player entering this draft)…..I wouldn’t take Bosa even if he fell, nor take Hargreaves…I would trade back a few spots, acquire more picks and select “man beast” Emmanuel Ogbah
April 25th, 2016 at 10:37 am

Have you seen the sports science segment on him? The guy already has elite level measurables and he hasn’t even matured yet into an NFL player.

I can see the Chargers taking him at three……hoping he slips, but I agree, he likely doesn’t make it past five either way.
April 25th, 2016 at 10:41 am
That is the problem with the Buccaneers from year-to-year. And it doesn’t matter who the general manager is or who the head coach is. The Buccaneers “hope” to get better. When you read preseason prognostications they are always littered with “if so-and-so stays healthy and so-and-so emerges as a threat, the Buccaneers can be dangerous.”
My advice: quit hoping. Hope is for Obama supporters and look with that got them. Higher insurance premiums and a record number of people out of the workforce. If Jalyn Ramsey is your guy go out and get him. Quit hoping.
April 25th, 2016 at 11:40 am
My dream of dreams is that 3-4-5 go Buckner-Elliot-Jack as so predicted by the NFL talking heads. It would be a perfect scenario for Light & Co, could potentially sit tight and get Bosa, or trade up a couple of spots for Ramsey.
April 25th, 2016 at 12:00 pm
BucTrooper

Stick to sports your political knowledge is obviously incredibly weak. Health care costs overall are going up but at a much lower rate than before ACA…and of course we’ve insured more than 15 million folks who wouldn’t otherwise have insurance. UE has dropped dramatically since Obama has been sworn in and if you want to whine that UE numbers do not reflect people who are out of work but not looking that same situation existed before Obama….Bush..Clinton or any Prez.
April 25th, 2016 at 12:16 pm
draft bosa or vhg at #9…wouldn’t trade up for a cb that will be converted to a safety….grab the best pure pass rusher in the draft or grab the best pure cover cb the draft….GO BUCS!!!
April 25th, 2016 at 1:45 pm
I think the Cowboys would be easier to talk into trading. If Jerry jones is gushing over Elliot, we could work out a trade where we get Ramsey and they get their star running back. This is even if the Chargers go with Tunsil or Buckner. But the Cowboys biggest need isn’t at DB. It’s DE or RB. And that would be our best shot.
April 25th, 2016 at 1:49 pm
Honestly Ramsey wouldn’t like what the Chargers are thinking. Ramsey wants to be a corner and the Chargers need a safety. They will try to transition him like other teams told Derrick brooks they would do before his draft. They wanted him to play safety and he said he was playing LB. then he fell in the draft, hoping that happens to Ramsey so we wouldn’t have to trade up.
April 25th, 2016 at 1:52 pm
Also, I would like to add, anyone that uses Ramsey’s lack of ints to bring him down, is just ignorant to the fact that he wasn’t targeted as much as Hargreaves was. Rarely was he completed against and anyone who has watched his career would see that. He is the real deal.

Dear St Pete Bucs Fan…
These people are on Medicaid! They have insurance because the government (i.e. You and me) are PAYING FOR THEM WITH HIGHER PREMIUMS!
We were promised a savings of $2500 a year for a family of four (well, YOU were promised…. I never bought it because I know math and am a licensed agent)… Over and over again $2500 savings for a family of four.
And your defense is “well it went up, but not as much.” You can’t promise a cut and then call a RISE a success (unless your a math-challenged liberal who is most likely pushing common core math).
With Defense like that, you should change your name to Lovie.
