In the world of NFL media coverage, a healthy percentage of the old-school, mainstream bunch is out of touch for a variety of reasons.
It’s why many of those outfits are failing and declining, despite far greater resources than their independent counterparts. Joe could write a thesis on the topic.
The brings Joe to what likely is the second best team-specific site on the Internet, BlackandBlueReview.com, which covers the Carolina Panthers. Joe’s friend Bill Voth runs the site and lives and breathes Panthers football 24/7. He transitioned out of network television and is the ultimate Panthers guru. One might even call Voth “Joe of the Carolinas.”
Voth penned this concise piece on why 28-year-old star cornerback Josh Norman is no longer wearing Panthers colors. Joe suggests you read it thoroughly.
For all the haters running around screaming and asking, ‘The Panthers didn’t want Norman so why should the Bucs?’ Joe points out that Voth writes, “They would’ve done $11-$12 million,” referring to what the Panthers were prepared to pay Norman annually on a long term contract.
Hall of Fame voter and former Panthers beat writer Darin Gantt joined PFT Live this morning on NBC Sports Radio and also expressed that the Panthers were prepared to ink Norman to a big contract at $11 million per season.
So please stop telling Joe that Norman was unwanted in Carolina. It’s just a lie.
Gantt noted Panthers GM Dave Gettleman is a hardball kind of personality and likely simply reached a point where the roughly $4 million or $5 million gap in negotiations drove him to shut down and move on.
In fact, Gettleman did Norman a huge favor by cutting ties now, freeing him up to find a team before the draft locks many teams into firm directions. Does the GM do that if he hates Norman?
Yes, Joe will continue to write about Norman as long as the Bucs remain in the hunt for this superstar.

49ers have tons of cap space but why pay state tax and play for chip jelly when you can come here w no tax, play with Americas quarterback and play the panthers twice a year. We don’t need to cut anyone and im sure we could getaybe Vincent Jackson to restructure to bring him here or trim elsewhere

Maybe VJax will restructure his contract, along with cutting Johnson, and at least one of our four QB will give us the room to grab Norman and our draft picks.

damn…12 mil a year on a young winning team with a franchise is a lot to turn down…that front 7 isn’t going anywhere any time soon…he may get what he’s asking for but it wont be with a contender…winning and getting paid sounds better than losing and getting paid….GO BUCS!!!

i don’t buy this logic, sorry.
every team would love to keep players for a bargain. the question is whether they are worth the price they are asking, and in this case the panthers said no.
also, its a bit naive to think they released him as a favor to him and to drive the price up.

Can’t blame him for not taking it. He deserves Sherman/Peterson money, and they’re making $14 a year…over say, 4 years, that ends up being a $12 million difference.

Joe, Gettleman did himself a favor because if Norman signs with another team before May 12th, Carolina gets a 3rd round compensatory pick in 2017. At least as of this moment.

Well, for those who say he’s not worth it, watch the two games against our beloved Bucs. In one of those games he changed the complexion with his mouth. Incidentally we lost both.
His value is what the market says it is. Most likely, he’ll get somewhere near what he’s asking. Do the Bucs value him that high? That’s the question.

nawl he aint worth it….in 2013 the panthers went 12-4…their starting cb’s were captin munnerlyn and drayton Florence….norman is purely a system cb….if he doesn’t have safety help over the top and lb’s covering the flats he’s in trouble…GO BUCS!!!

i know some of you are desperate for wins but truly, this guy isn’t worth the money- he has been in the division for 5 years and just now you heard of him. Vjax had his number, mike Williams had his number, Evans had his number- he just had one good year!!! He is no different than what we already have, and cheaper!- there is no need to cut any of our guys for him, you would just be paying more for the same, if not inferior product.

The Bucs have a bunch of FA’s next year. Does it make sense to put themselves in the position to have to manipulate the cap to take care of current players?
Isn’t that how the team got into Cap Hell a few years ago in the first place?
I’m not so sure selling the future for Josh Norman now is a wise long-term move on a team trying to put pieces together through the draft.

I actually wanted the Bucs to draft Norman a couple years ago. I went on this whole rant about. How we need to, start back scouting HSBC’s like we use too, etc.
I’ve watched the kid progress – he’s real good corner.
I would love to see him on our roster matched up with Grimes.

Can we at least put a clause in his contract that if he injures #3 in practice he loses a boatload of money? I do not need to see our own players taking cheap shots at #3 or fighting with him.
Remember when Clint Longley got in a locker room brawl with Roger Staubach and sucker punched him..Longley was gone in a heartbeat. You simply do not attempt to hurt or fight with your QB!!!

I gotta say when news first released I was caught up in the hype about getting Norman. That said I am now on the fence a bit. Looking at our contracts, talent, and the new hopefully way better and more competent coaches, are we not better just keeping what we have and building our own guy from the draft?
It’s a tough call on this one so I will just have to say that the front office will do what’s best for the team and for now I have no reason to not have faith in that or them. Seeing what he’s asking for has me a bit concerned. When it was without the news of what was offered to him I was obviously all over it.

Did the panthers have the cap room to keep him this year at the franchise tag price? Perhaps that is the biggest reason he was let go rather than retained for even the 1 yr franchise tag. They simply could not afford him, and were not willing to cut other people to make room to keep him for a 1 yr rental.

If they couldn’t afford the franchise tag, they wouldn’t of put it on him. Its crystal clear that he was becoming a distraction, he already skipped OTAs cuz he wasnt happy with the 14Million Carolina was going to give him…. Thats a red flag if there ever was one. Mark my words, he’s going to sign a huge contract with a bad team and never be heard from again.
