Dropping A Deuce For Noah Spence
April 17th, 2016So what about Eastern Kentucky and booted-from-Ohio-State defensive end Noah Spence?
Spence’s drug problems (Ecstasy) are so far in his past he won’t enter the NFL in the league drug program like some draft picks will, per a quality ESPN.com feature. Also, the piece contained a unique nugget from Spence, claiming he wasn’t playing just to win during his senior year at Eastern Kentucky.
Another part of his pitch is what he put on film at EKU. Knowing his pure athletic ability likely would allow him to beat Ohio Valley Conference tackles simply by running around them, Spence endeavored to incorporate three pass-rush moves per week so that the film would show that he had them. He knew scouts would view any numbers he put up in the OVC with some skepticism, so he had to offer something that would impress. He continues to work on technique.
“I want to get my spin down,” he said. “I’ve been watching Dwight Freeney’s spin move. It’s beautiful. But I get in a game and I’m kind of still raw to it. I want to put that in my game. Other than that, I’m good with my hands. I’ve got a lot better this year watching Justin Houston. Watching his film, I feel like I’ve gotten a lot better with my hands.”
A smaller defensive end at 6-2, 252 pounds, Spence has limited versatility but is a talented force off the edge. Largely viewed as a first-round talent, his history, including a bottle-throwing event last year, makes him a draft wild card in a big way.
Joe never saw Spence as a potential first-round pick of Tampa Bay, but he could be there for the Bucs early in the second round.
Joe already can hear the chorus of boos from Bucs fans, but that won’t deter Jason Licht. If he believes Spence is a great value in a deep class of ends, Licht will act. Licht’s already said — and proven with America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston — he has no problem drafting a guy with maturity issues, as long as the player is devoted to football and a good person.
April 17th, 2016 at 9:40 am
get this guy. i like him better than any of the others outside of the bosa
April 17th, 2016 at 9:42 am
Sheldon Rankins wit the first pick, Spence wit the second pick…
YO JOE!
GO BUCS!!!
April 17th, 2016 at 9:59 am
If we can trade back, say to 15th, land ogbah, move back into the first for nkimdiche, and a 2nd on Spence. Well that would be one heck of a D line haul. Yes, it’s doable!
April 17th, 2016 at 10:00 am
I doubt he will be there for us in 2nd
April 17th, 2016 at 10:32 am
Spence will be picked somewhere in the 20s for his pass rush abilities. Almost certainly wont be there at 39.
April 17th, 2016 at 10:43 am
I would like to see if we could drop to maybe 20, get ogbah, and if we were to acquire maybe a second rounder and maybe a couple later rounders and we could use those to trade up a little bit in the second round and snag Karl Joseph to solidify the safety position. It seems doable and it covers some needs without giving away what we have now. Let me know what you guys think
April 17th, 2016 at 10:52 am
With the 9th pick in the 2016 NFL draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Moah Spence, DE from E. Ky
Welcome to Tampa, Noah!
April 17th, 2016 at 10:53 am
He won’t be there, unless we trade up to get him at the end of the first round.
How’d you like Sheldon Rankins AND Noah Spence? Think that’d upgrade our defensive line?
April 17th, 2016 at 10:55 am
I just can’t see us taking him @ #9 like some are suggesting. Terrible value pick at #9, a terrific value pick at #26.
April 17th, 2016 at 11:00 am
But if we go WR, can you not see Jerry Rice potential in Josh Doctson? Same body too….
April 17th, 2016 at 11:07 am
I dunno. He was billed as the next Mack, but lacks elite explosion that Mack has. I would lean more towards Leonard Floyd if we were going for an undersized speed guy. He is 6’6″ and can easily put 25 more lbs on his Fran without losing any explosion. Looking at Spence, he seems pretty maxed out size wise, built more for 3-4 olb.
April 17th, 2016 at 11:19 am
A’Shawn robinson. He would bring a toughness to our defense. We need our d line to bully the opposition. Esp playing Cam twice a year. His pressence would let everyone, including GMC, more chances to get after the qb.
April 17th, 2016 at 11:30 am
Love it if MadMax is right!
If doable – another sensational draft!!!
April 17th, 2016 at 11:33 am
The 2nd and 3rd round will be full of d-line talent, Spence possibly being one of them. Take the best playmaker on the board at #9 and then load up on defense with the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round.
April 17th, 2016 at 11:42 am
One can rag on Licht all they want for his FA debacles, he appears to be a true Genius in the Draft. For Once in a LOng time I trust our GM to hit a homerun in the draft.
April 17th, 2016 at 11:44 am
Stay away from Clemson DEs please!
April 17th, 2016 at 11:50 am
Pete, remember the trade up for Julio Jones with Atlanta? Smith and Koetter (and Licht) could be seriously thinking about another weapon to send this offense over the top. All D after that one pick. But then I see the D line and how its been neglected the past 3 drafts and think going that way might be better. Im torn between the two. So I guess I’ll be good with either position. But Im pretty sure we wont be picking top 10 for a while and just dont see top 10 pass rush talent that can help us like a WR can.
April 17th, 2016 at 11:57 am
Can we add some LB depth? When Darrly Smith needs a rest I don’t want to see Josh Keyes out there. Depth at DE is already solid with Jac Smtih, Howard Jones and George Johnson who was good as a rotation player in Detroit. I’m looking forward to see our players improve without being coached by college coach Lovie.
April 17th, 2016 at 11:57 am
My bad Pete, you were referring to my D picks I think…..sorry but Im going all over the place with so many scenarios….but all D in the top 3 picks is that one.
April 17th, 2016 at 12:00 pm
I agree with Joe, I was initially beating the Spence drum at #9 early in the draft process but when comparing him to the top edge rushers in the past 4 years or so he doesn’t seem like an elite level talent. I think he definitely has a lot of potential but when you add in his past drug problems and the bottle throwing incident last year I wouldn’t roll the dice on him at #9. If he’s still there at #39 I think that’s worth the risk but at #9 I’d rather go with a safer pick like Rankins, Bosa if he falls to 9, or possibly one of the top OT’s. I know taking an OT wouldn’t be a popular decision but if you want to draft guys that can stick around on the roster and play for many years you can’t just draft based on need and take a guy that may be the best at a position in the current draft but would be a much lower pick when compared to other guys that were drafted for the same position in previous drafts. At the NFL level you want the best of the best and not someone who is just good.
April 17th, 2016 at 12:04 pm
Madmax, I do think they will upgrade the wr position, but hopefully only with coleman, shepherd or maybe Pharaoh Cooper. I think that’s what will truly be an immediate upgrade (elite slot guy) as opposed to a replacement for v jax. I think the o is 1 piece away from perfect, but that piece has to be a guy that can make people miss in short areas, stretch the field type guy. No need for another top possession receiver.
April 17th, 2016 at 12:22 pm
Yeah I feel you Moji….and Cooper would be a serious asset. Im a Gamecock from SC and have watched him closely.
April 17th, 2016 at 12:43 pm
I too covet a 4.4 speed in space WR that can get us those 15 YAC’s. I’m holding out for Bell unlike some of you. he does look skinny though, so idk. I hope they find JW more weapons that’s for sure. Then again I want DL SL DL and I ain’t kidding. 1, 2, 3.
It’s just so hard to cover all the bases in one off-season though. Especially in this draft alone. I see picks 3d round or lower as developmental players most of the time anyways. So we can’t expect immediate impact from any of those rookies right away imo.
If Licht has another draft like last season, then we’re good to go. Not counting on it though. I’m just watching the first 3 picks.
April 17th, 2016 at 12:43 pm
DL DL DL*
Sorry it’s dark in my office…
April 17th, 2016 at 12:57 pm
Max…I keep thinking about trading back in this draft what with it being chock full of DL…
Trade down pick up another 2nd rounder and get us 2 studs on the DL then go WR with the next pick.
April 17th, 2016 at 12:57 pm
Shaq Lawson
If Spenser is there in Rd 2… Go for it.
For those afraid of Clemson DEs, get a grip. It isn’t the program, it was the players
April 17th, 2016 at 1:06 pm
Yeah 87, Im just future forecasting a little too much. We’re not picking top 10 for probably the next 5 years….and we wont have such an opportunity to trade back like we possibly could with the Titans, this year, for a while. So I see many possibilities. But with our now mediocre WR core, Vjax aging and coming back from a serious injury, Shepard coming back from serious injury, Evans dropsies, I just magnify the need more than most I guess. But D line is GLARING with need more than anything.
April 17th, 2016 at 1:09 pm
Folks, teams like Tennessee and the Saints are looking at the same set of players we are. They too want Ogbah or Spence &c.
Indeed, it is odd how little the Titans trade shuffled the draft. I had always presumed (and hoped) that two qbs would go in the top 8. Now that seems certain. And the Titans are still looking line — mainly o-line — in round 1. They are hoping for talent to fall to Round 2. As are all the other teams.
Our best scenario is for Tennessee to fall in love with a lineman — they think they are fixed at left tackle and their press is talking up a RT in Round 1. A trade giving Tampa an extra 2nd rounder would make this draft rock.
April 17th, 2016 at 1:13 pm
1st. Defense
2nd. Defense
3rd. Defense
4th Boehringer
April 17th, 2016 at 1:20 pm
If Licht is thinking 3 years out as he stated.shel idon rankins is a
possibility since McCoy and Macdonald will be entering their 9 th
Season.
April 17th, 2016 at 1:27 pm
I think Rankins is the pick. He’s clean, he’s low risk, and he’s high upside. Unless Buckner magically falls, Rankins makes the most sense in terms of value and need. Yeah, they need DE, but let’s not get tunnel vision – the desired outcome is greater pressure on the QB. If the Bucs are lethal on the inside, the need for a speed guy on the outside is lessened.
April 17th, 2016 at 1:37 pm
Too many good players out there to take a guy with past drug issues at 9.
April 17th, 2016 at 1:49 pm
I drop prune dueces all day errday
April 17th, 2016 at 1:53 pm
Draft Noah Spence. No one else in this draft bends the edge, like this kid. All of these scouts and GMs are full of it, when they say he’s off their first round draft board. Everyone saw the super bowl. Could you imagine if Seattle took this kid, and paired him with Michael Bennett?!!! How about Dan Quinn taking him, and using him with Beasley? Bucs have no one who’s considered a threat on the edge…NO ONE! NFL tackles are more than comfortable going one on one, with the current Bucs DEs. How many of us wanted the bucs to move up and take Khalil Mack? They need an edge rusher…no more excuses.
April 17th, 2016 at 2:04 pm
Rankins.
Strength up the middle of O & D lines comes first.
A guy with Rankins skills frees McCoy a great deal.
You anchor & get push up the middle and the edge needs are reduced…and some currently rostered DE’s perform better…
April 17th, 2016 at 2:11 pm
Besides bosa, no one else is better at DE in this draft.
Take Noah Spence at #9 because he’s better than anyone else you could take.
April 17th, 2016 at 2:18 pm
What Cobra just said. We trade down and take Rankins. Extreme pressure in the middle flushes the QB to one side or the other. Speedy edge rushers are less necessary and the ones we currently have on the roster suddenly look like stars. Not saying Rice wasn’t Elite but Booger and Sapp pushed that middle pretty damn hard.
April 17th, 2016 at 2:39 pm
Look what Carolina did with short and star. Great interior pressure, get the qb off his throwing point.
April 17th, 2016 at 2:53 pm
Noah Spence is my favorite player in this draft, bar none. That is after watching a ton of film. But no way can we take him at #9. Drafting for value is what makes franchises great. There is no way to guarantee any player and to draft for value. Being said, if we can trade back a few picks and try to get Rankins or another few for Apple, then come back into the first late to pick up Spence, Ogbah, Dodd or Lawson. That would make me happy.
Don’t know what Joe knows that I don’t regarding Spence, but when you hear Kirwan talk about the guy, after spending time with him at the Senior Bowl the picture is painted with a different palette of colors.
April 17th, 2016 at 2:59 pm
SB with Jameis Says:
As did Culpepper & Darby. Much of the pass rush success came from a lot of pressure up the middle.
Look at the Rams D with the front anchored by two Bad Ass DT’s, Donald & Brockers. They tore the Bucs OL a new one in ’15. Brockers made Donald an even better DT because it’s nearly impossible to double both DT’s, making the job of the DE’s that much more doable…and both were first round picks.
IMO, drafting specialty edge rush DE’s is a crapshoot. Drafting serious DT’s isn’t.
April 17th, 2016 at 3:00 pm
IMO Spence was too stupid to realize what he had when he was at OSU. Then wasn’t good enough to completely dominate in the Ohio Valley Conference. Combine the two and there is NO WAY he is a first round talent.
However my profession is building homes not judging football talent so ………………
April 17th, 2016 at 3:02 pm
What about that Texas dt then? He is supposed to be extremely talented, and available through the 4th.
April 17th, 2016 at 3:03 pm
No probs Cobra. We are on the Exact same page. Though Leonard Floyd does intrigue me.
April 17th, 2016 at 3:03 pm
Trade up for Jalen Ramsey. Knowing that we only have to move up to 3 makes drafting the freak worth it. He is the only true athletic freak in the draft.
April 17th, 2016 at 3:04 pm
I would love to see mr.buc gm pull off getting bosa and Spence.it might cost all of our other pics but it would be worth it.Tampaaaa
April 17th, 2016 at 3:05 pm
Why would anybody boo drafting Spence? Everybody agrees we need help at DE and most feel Spence is the best pure pass rusher in the draft.
April 17th, 2016 at 3:17 pm
Jameisbuc………you must be a Nole fan. The only reason Ramsey is so coveted is that he can play Safety and CB. His highlights tape is not all that. He is a great athlete no doubt but he is in NO means worth trading up for.
April 17th, 2016 at 3:19 pm
Couch……….Too stupid to take advantage at OSU and not gifted enough to completely Dominate the Ohio Valley Conference. This is why to me anyways
April 17th, 2016 at 3:31 pm
I guess I can understand that. I look at it differently, if Licht thinks he’s the best pick for us then I’ll accept that, he’s earned that much. I personally dont like any of the DE options at 9 except for Bosa. I’d rather go with a DT, OT or WR. I also wouldn’t mind trading down and getting Hunter Henry.
April 17th, 2016 at 3:38 pm
Spence is great and could be s trade up in the bottom of round 1, but I doubt it.
I see Lawson at 9.
He does it all and is relentless.
Bosa- good at run not a great sack guy.
Spence – great at sacks not good against run
Dodd has the potential to be the best all around to me but he doesn’t have the value until Rd 2
April 17th, 2016 at 3:40 pm
@Couch……..O I definitely will welcome him with open arms if Licht drafts him. I am Completely ok with whatever Licht does after the last two drafts. I just think he has to many ?s to go in the first.
April 17th, 2016 at 3:41 pm
Carl Nassib in 2nd
April 17th, 2016 at 3:42 pm
Everything out there has been saying VH for the last month or so.
I don’t see it unless they really think they are going to get DE in Rd 2&3 possibly. The DE depth is there. Just retried about a run on DE if the go CB first.
IMHO they neeeed a pass rush more than anything else. Between Ayers and a rookie and Akeem and McCoy and David and Kwon …. The entire secondary just got a lot better if they have to cover for a second or two less.
April 17th, 2016 at 3:43 pm
Anyways the Rainbows are spawning and I need to pluck a few out of the river before the Lightning game in 3 hrs.
Peace out fellow Bucs’ fans!
April 17th, 2016 at 4:40 pm
Ultimately, Jason Licht and his staff will have to determine if Spence has what it takes above the neck. To me, the red flags of the past drug abuse and the fact that he interviewed poorly are too much to say I’m confident that picking Spence at #9 is a good idea. If they guy is a headcase, that’s a big bust waiting to happen. It’s impossible for us to know what the truth is about the guy, but I’m confident Jason Licht has a good idea. If they pass on him, it will be because the character questions were not sufficiently answered.
April 17th, 2016 at 5:04 pm
Jalen Ramsey is a shut down corner with the same work ethic and desire of Jameis Winston.
We need more JW’s.
April 17th, 2016 at 5:29 pm
If Jalen somehow falls to 5 and we can trade up to get him without giving up our 2nd we should do it.
A long shot may be a trade with Dallas to swap picks and they get Glennon.
April 17th, 2016 at 5:40 pm
@gotbucs is right. There is depth in the 2nd and 3rd for D Line. Not so much in the 1st round. Spence would be an ok pick in the 2nd. I wouldn’t touch him at #9. There is only 1 DE I would even remotely consider at #9, and that’s Emmanuel Ogbah. No one else, and he would still be a bit of a reach. To pass on a talent like Stanley, VH3, Jack, or even Conklin (if Stanley is gone), would be foolish. I personally am not too big on Spence. He may not be in the drug program (don’t understand how he isn’t), but the league will have him under a microscope. Ogbah has the size, speed, and strength to handle OT’s in the NFL. Not sure Spence can. Also, I don’t think Bosa can either. And obviously, Buckner is a DT in a 4-3.
I also like Rankins, but drafting a DT at #9, with so many holes, would be too much of a luxury pick. Something we can’t afford. Just my thoughts on all that.
April 17th, 2016 at 5:43 pm
See I disagree with that. I think if you put another talented DT next to McCoy, and those 2 blow up the middle consistently, thats just as good as 2 good DE crashing the outsides. Thats what we are looking for. Guys who can distrupt plays consistently. Who cares what position along the D-Line they play.
April 17th, 2016 at 5:45 pm
And no, we have nobody else in the middle, besides McCoy that is a pass rusher. McDonald, Spence, not that.
April 17th, 2016 at 5:48 pm
Take Carolina for instance, they got 2 studs in the middle of their line. They DE’s arent great but the sum of the parts equals a very good whole..
April 17th, 2016 at 6:14 pm
I decided to do a wishlist after all.
Still working on it, but here are some names on it 😉
DeForest Buckner – Defensive End (well yeah…if he falls to us! Duh)
Joey Bosa – Defensive End (well yeah…if he falls to us! Duh)
Jack Conklin – Offensive Tackle
Kevin Dodd – Defensive End
Noah Spence – Defensive End
Corey Coleman – Wide Reciever
Deon Jones – OLB (convert to Safety)
Braxton Miller – Wide Receiver/Hybrid Quarterback
Darian Thompson – Safety
Deiondre’ Hall – Cornerback
Thomas Duarte – Tight End/Wide Receiver
Roberto Aguayo – Kicker
These are just names I would love to get on our team in the draft…any of these guys.
April 17th, 2016 at 6:16 pm
You know…we could use Glennon+our #2 to get back into the first round.
April 17th, 2016 at 6:17 pm
Heck, for that matter…we could give the Browns our 1st rounder and Glennon to get their 2nd overall. It’s only 8 spots, right? Throw in a 6th if needed.
April 17th, 2016 at 6:18 pm
As far as I’m concerned, there is only one QB in this draft that is a valid 1st rounder, and he’ll go #1.
April 17th, 2016 at 6:48 pm
Spence Rd 2? Lol you guys are hilarious. At one point he was pegged to go 6th to Baltimore. Don’t let these mock drafts fool you. He is a top 15 talent. If you like he at 9, you take him period.
April 17th, 2016 at 7:11 pm
GO LIGHTNING!!!
April 17th, 2016 at 8:01 pm
If your not gonna trade up then rankins is the guy at #9. I could see a potential trade back scenario to #15 with the Titans and still get him along with one of their newly acquired 2nd round picks. Then grab Karl Joseph to sure up safety. I like the idea of grabbing jaylon smith and stashing him away for 2017. You’d potentially have one of the best Linebacking crews in the nfl. Miles killebrew is also a guy I’d look at in the 3rd with his john lynch type hits out of the SS position. Think of him as a kam chancellor projection.
April 17th, 2016 at 8:48 pm

“Spence Rd 2? Lol you guys are hilarious. At one point he was pegged to go 6th to Baltimore. Don’t let these mock drafts fool you.”
Ahhh…but you said he was “pegged” to go at 6th overall? Wasn’t that source a mock?
He won’t go 6th. Maybe 14th if we don’t take him. Frankly, I wanted to take him at 9…but then I looked into Kevin Dodd. He a beast. Too bad we can’t get both.
April 17th, 2016 at 10:05 pm
Spence certainly sounds like a better prospect than our last 2 DEs we drafted. Player coming out of college with degenerative knee problems and limited use of one of his shoulders is not very thoughtful drafting. It is amazing the quality DEs that came out of that draft, and we picked the 2 bad ones.
Jj watt
Robert Quinn
Ryan Kerrigan
Corey luiget
Cameron Jordan
Cameron Heyward
Even the late round picks ended up better than the 2 we picked. It is entirely possible we picked the 2 worst pass rushing DEs in that 2011 draft…
April 17th, 2016 at 10:30 pm
He will be gone in thw 2nd round. Trade back and take him later in the first
April 17th, 2016 at 11:03 pm
About time Joe… Anyway if this kid falls to the second I would be a bit surprised. If they drop down and get him or can climb up a bit in the second and grab him I will be a happy camper. I have my list of people I would love to have and honestly I will be super excited if we can nab 2 of them. That said I will have faith in the front office to not screw this up. Maybe not have the same luck with 3rd and 4th as we have but 1st and 2nd rounders in this deep of a draft should be at the very least solid effective starters.
April 17th, 2016 at 11:34 pm

Love the Joes for their terrific product. I’m just btching and moaning a little cuz I want to stay up late and don’t want to hit the grind tomorrow.

Why do you want to trade up and get rid of picks?????
Too many holes to fill plus no one on this draft is worthy of losing picks over. DE and DB are loaded. If anything, they need to trade glennon for another 3rd and possibly even trade down a little to get a DE (DODD?) and another pick.
Like I said, I don’t see any player in this draft worthy of trading away picks for to move up from 9. Ramsey?? Bosa?? No thanks. I like Ramsey, but not that much. Bosa is not all that imho.

I’m on the Sheldon Rankin bandwagon. G-MAC isn’t getting any younger going into his 9th season already (wow, time flys). All the productive years that we wasted away from GMC by not acquiring him any help is sad to think about.
Just like in Carolina, they have two talented 1st rnders collapsing the pocket and that’s why their so disruptive. They really don’t have a premiere edge rusher, most of the pressure comes from the middle.
And if you haven’t noticed we haven’t signed anyone to replace Melton and McDaniel wich were released. And it doesn’t hurt that Licht was a DT in college and believes in pressure up the middle. That was evident from him signing Melton, McDaniel and McDonald. He tryed that technique last year but it didn’t work out that we’ll with McDonald being out for the year and Melton underperforming. Spence is decent and so is McDonald but you still need couple more guys to rotate, especially in the FLA heat.
So if it isn’t Rankins, I’m almost all but convinced the Bucs will take a DT somewhere in the draft. There’s just too many of them to pass on when your taking the BPA approach.
GMC is gonna need a replacement here soon and who better than Rankins?
April 18th, 2016 at 8:27 am
Dave Says:
“Why do you want to trade up and get rid of picks?????”
I didn’t say that I would be in favor of it. I was just saying it was a possibility.
And giving our first plus Glennon is not giving away picks. If we included a 6th it would be…but that was an after thought. A 6th doesn’t usually amount to much the majority of the time anyway. Rounds 6-7 are often used to trade up.
Although…what if doing this landed the Bucs DeForest Buckner…the best DE in the class? Would that make it worth it? I would certainly think its possible.
April 18th, 2016 at 8:32 am
I personally believe the more likely scenario is that a possible deal is in place with the Broncos for their first rounder.
If a certain player that Licht wants is still on the board when the Broncos pick, he’ll probably give our 2nd rounder plus Glennon to get that pick. The Broncos get their QB and an extra second. It makes Glennon a starter on a good team with a great offensive line.
The Bucs would get their guy too.
The Broncos have the last pick in the first round…this really isn’t much better than a second rounder…sort of the first pick of the second round. We would be giving up next to nothing to move up the nine spots.

I think McDonald will be the starter, but Spence will overtake the role. He was demoted because of his suspension. IF he learned his lesson, then there is no reason he cannot become great. He is a solid run blocker, and when he started out he showed some pass rush ability.
Keep in mind, that position was fill by guys like Booger McFarlane in the past. It doesn’t have to be a sack master…just disruptive enough to draw attention and Spence can do that.
IF he has learned his lesson and stepped up his game. And that’s a big IF.
So far as depth…as you pointed out, Licht knows DTs. He doesn’t have to take one in the 1st to get a solid starter. He could probably find a couple from the undrafted rookies.

DEs we should take over Noah Spence:
Joey Bosa
Shaw Lawson
Emmanuel Ogbah
Kevin Dodd.
If Noah Spence goes in the first round good for him, if he is there in the second it will be solid value.

Spoiler alert….there is zero chance that Spence gets past all the smart teams at the end of the 1st round.
