The Bucs And Daniel Lasco
April 12th, 2016Everyone can agree that former Bucs running back Bobby Rainey was versatile.
He was almost an average return man, and he could run inside and outside the tackles and catch the football.
The guy put up multiple 100-yard rushing games in a Bucs uniform.
Rainey, 28, just signed by the New York Giants, represented quality depth with low mileage on his legs. Rainey is a good guy, too, committed to the game year-round. (Excellent Giants video here.)
So where do the Bucs turn to replace Rainey?
First, Joe is a huge Mike James fan, and maybe, now in his contract year, James will get a real shot to shine in preseason. But more likely, since James was drafted by the Dominik-Schiano regime, the Bucs will look to get a promising rookie in the house.
Joe can’t see Jason Licht investing much, so that’s why Joe has is eye on “Cal” running back Daniel Lasco, who often is projected as a fifth-round pick. Remember, Joe shared 1-on-1 time with Lasco at the NFL Scouting Combine. Lasco said he had two or three discussions with the Bucs, and that was back in February.
One meeting with a Bucs representative is not noteworthy. More than one is.
A hip injury forced Lasco to miss the first half of last season. In 2014, he was a menace to Pac-12 defenses with 1,115 yards on just 210 carries. He had 12 touchdowns on the ground and two through the air, among 33 receptions.
The 6-0, 210-pounder earned a workout warrior label at the Combine, but more important, he played on his share of coverage teams in college. NFL teams need their No. 3 or N0. 4 running backs to be able to play special teams.
Joe would keep an eye on Lasco if he’s available in the sixth round.

I think it will be a fullback who can also catch, keep Mike James unless some UDFA blows up like Dontae Dye or Adam Humphries

My fingers are cross for a defensive dominant draft but I really wouldn’t mind seeing us draft this kid.

Would rather have cj Prosise to groom to replace Martin and Sims after 2017, he’s got the skills to be a 3 down back plus he was a former WR in college, his limited usage in college can be a bonus, no wear on his body, with Martin n Sims the next 2 years gives him time to grow, 6′ 220 with great hands and 4.4 wheels, he reminds me of David Johnson, if he’s there in the 4th which he should be hope we jump on him, check out his highlights on YouTube he’s electric

Why not go outside the box? Now that we have Miko welcome OBJ’s cousin RB Terron Beckham (5-11 225).
40-Yard Dash: 4.47
3-Cone Drill: 6.80 seconds
Vertical Jump: 44.5 inches
Broad Jump: 11-feet
Bench Press: 36 reps (225 pounds)
His 40 would have tied him for fifth at the Combine, the broad jump would have been second, (Daniel Lasco had 11-3), while his vertical jump, bench press, and 3-cone drill would have been far and away the top performances among running backs. The 23 year old running back could be a late round pick or a UDFA. We need a replacement for Bobby Rainey. The question is not to ask why, the question needs to be why not? He looks like Odell on steroids. Give him a chance based on his athleticism alone.

@godzilla – nice research, but idk if we would use a draft pick on him. Having never played football before is a big drawback. If the Bucs can bring him in as a UDFA then lets give it a shot and worst case scenario maybe they can get him to work with the team as a physical trainer.

Too funny – I live in Tampa and was talking about Daniel this morning in the car taking my son and his buddy to school. Daniel is the buddy’s cousin – and we went threw his combine video and stats. Hope he’s a late round Buc!
